Clinical History

39 year old pregnant woman with left chest pain after a bout of severe coughing and sneezing.

Diagnosis: Subacute Rib Fracture with Callus Formation

Ultrasound can be used to evaluate for fractures, seen as focal disruption of osseous cortex.

Though radiographs are often used to identify rib fractures, sonography has been shown to be more sensitive

Additionally, ultrasound does not carry ionizing radiation, which should be avoided in the pregnant patient.
