Healthy Hornet Wellness At Emporia State, we strive to provide our students with the resources they need to be balanced and successful. Wellness is a self-directed and ever-evolving process that is a result of a balanced lifestyle best accomplished when you maintain the seven dimensions of wellness below. Because we believe wellness is so important, we’ve designated the associated elements on every page.

Granting Proxy Access
There is no deadline — we will process your FAFSA at any time during the academic year, but submitting your FAFSA early is best!
Due to privacy laws, our office cannot share your FAFSA information without your permission. If you wish for your parent(s) or guardian(s) to have access to your financial aid records, you must give us permission to release the information. If you would like to grant access, please review and complete the steps below. Parental or guardian access can be canceled at any time. § Go to Hornet365.com § Click ‘Students’ § Click ‘Proxy Access’ (located a little more than halfway down the page) § Click ‘Proxy Management’ § Click ‘Add Proxy’ § Add the name and email address, click ‘Add Proxy’ and then click expand and complete the rest of the fields, including a passphrase. § Click on the authorization tab to select areas for which you wish to grant permission. If “Financial Aid Status” is not checked and a passphrase is not provided, we will be unable to discuss your financial aid information with your parent or guardian.
Sometimes additional documentation is required in order to complete processing of your FAFSA. Timely responses to documentation requests from the Financial Aid Office can help avoid processing delays and enable our office to put together a financial aid offer for you. If you need assistance completing your FAFSA, or would like to set up an appointment with our staff for questions regarding requests for documentation, please feel free to contact us. Appointments can be held in person, over the phone, or by video chat. Remember that the FAFSA must be completed every year at studentaid.gov. When our office receives your FAFSA, we will send a postcard in the mail with instructions about how to access and accept your financial aid offer or a letter requesting additional documentation.
Federal Direct Loans For dependent undergraduate students, annual loan limits are as follows: § $5,500 Freshman (0-29 credit hours) § $6,500 Sophomore (30-59 credit hours) § $7,500 Junior/Senior (60+ credit hours) Loans can be accepted at any time during the semester. The first time a direct loan is accepted, students must complete loan entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note, which is the student’s promise to pay back the loan. Federal direct loan borrowers will also be required to complete an annual confirmation which will be communicated through Hornet365. Our office cannot process your loan until those steps have been completed. Students who have questions about loans are welcome to contact the Financial Aid Office for guidance.

Honors College
Application and Enrollment
Enhanced Curriculum
Eligible students should complete the online, emporia.edu/ honors-college, application form as soon as possible. The preferred application date is May 8, 2020.
A unique curriculum has been designed that further distinguishes the Honors College. Traditional honors courses lay a foundation for the curriculum, while honors contract courses expand and enhance offerings which allow students flexibility in their choices. Through an agreement with professors, Honors College students can transform traditional courses into honors contract courses. The combination of traditional honors courses and honors contract courses provides students with an enriched and broadened educational experience.
During Hornet Connection, students should enroll in CW 111 for Fall 2020. Students should consider applying for residence on the Scholars Floor in Schallenkamp Hall.
Leadership Training Honors College students receive intensive training in adaptive leadership, a leadership style developed at Harvard University and the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita. This training is provided by both Honors College students and faculty members who have mastered this cutting-edge approach to mobilize people in order to make progress on difficult issues our society faces.

The Honors College strives to be a significant catalyst for improvement of communities in Kansas and beyond. Honors College students are given multiple opportunities to use their knowledge and skill to provide service to others through group and individual service projects.
Relationship Building Honors is about connecting with people and developing strong relationships. Honors College students are provided many opportunities to work with fellow students, faculty and staff, as well as people from all over the world on projects of shared interest. Becoming an agent of change for the common good is the mission of the Honors College.

Honors College students have access to the Honors College Engagement Center, a technologically enhanced space. First-year students also have the opportunity to live on the Scholar’s Floor in the Residence Halls, where they form a unique and supportive learning community.

Be open to considering new majors and career paths based on your interests. Career Services provides highly qualified career counselors to assist you in exploring majors and career paths that best fit you. Career Outcomes Emporia State graduates have a strong record of finding success after graduation. In fact, 96% of the 2017-2018 graduating class found employment or were accepted to graduate school 6 months following graduation. Student Wellness Center The Student Wellness Center is conveniently located at 250 SE Morse Hall and includes both Health Services and Counseling Services. The mission of the Student Wellness Center is to enhance the academic success of all ESU students, with an emphasis on wellness and personal growth. In other words, we believe that if you are physically and mentally healthy, you will be better equipped to do well in your classes and activities. You can also send/retrieve secure messages with your Health and Counseling providers through the Student Patient Portal.
Counseling Services Staff includes Licensed Mental Health Providers who provide: § Counseling: Individual, couples, and groups for issues ranging from learning coping skills, improving relationships, to mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, etc. § Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP): Includes substance abuse counseling, evaluation, screening, education, and presentations promoting the responsible use of alcohol and ways to stay safe § Biofeedback: Provides students skills to learn intentional relaxation to relieve test anxiety, enhance performance, and manage stress § The Healthy Relationship and Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) is a student-led program that is committed to creating and promoting a safe environment for the Emporia State University community through educational initiatives and outreach that reduce sexual violence and empower individuals to engage in healthy relationships. THRIVE, in accordance with Emporia State University’s policies and procedures, prohibits all forms of discrimination, including all types of harassment and all other types of violence. Staff includes a physician, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses who provide: § Diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injury § Physical exams § Management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, asthma, etc. § Immunizations and TB tests § Male and female sexual health exams § Laboratory services, including lab orders from your family physician § Medications ordered by our providers, including antibiotics, birth control pills, inhalers § Procedures such as colposcopy, insertion of contraceptive devices § Minor surgical procedures such as mole removal § Presentations and health promotion events Claims will be filed for all students with private health insurance; students must provide their insurance card at the time of service. We will bill your insurance first, then bill your student account for any remainder after we are reimbursed by insurance. § Hornets Nest is our residential dining hall, which offers a wide “all-you-care-to-eat” selection of cuisine. § Hornet Express offers Sub Connection, Tres Habaneros (Mexican), and The Grill (burgers, chicken fingers, fries, breakfast, etc.), as well as a variety of grab-and-go snacks, and beverages. § Starbucks is a fully licensed store offering a full menu of coffee, specialty beverages, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. § Slice of Life offers pizza, sub sandwiches, salad, bread sticks, and fountain beverages. § Buzzcotti C-Store is the union’s convenience store offering a wide variety of food, snacks, and basic essentials, including a smoothie bar.
Residential Meal Plans All students living in the residence halls must have one of our three meal plans. Meal plans are selected at the time the student completes a housing contract. Students may change to a higher tier meal plan at any time, and may only change to a lower tier meal plan, up until the second Friday of classes each semester. § All Access Plan: This meal plan allows you unlimited access to the Hornets Nest. You may enter the Hornets Nest as frequently as you wish, with no restrictions on the number of personal meals you may eat per day or per week. This plan includes $125 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life, Buzzcotti C-Store, and Starbucks. § Block 185 Meal Plan with $225 Dining Dollars: This plan allows you 185 meals per semester in the Hornets Nest. There are no restrictions on the number of meals you may eat per day. All 185 meals must be used in the Hornets Nest. This plan includes $225 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life, Buzzcotti C-Store, and Starbucks. § Block 100 Meal Plan with $450 Dining Dollars: This plan allows you 100 meals per semester in the Hornets Nest. There are no restrictions on the number of meals you may eat per day. All 100 meals must be used in the Hornets Nest. This plan includes $450 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life, Buzzcotti C-Store, and Starbucks. Textbook Rentals
§ Can I highlight or write in a rented textbook? Yes! Normal use of highlighting and writing is permitted. § How can I pay for my rentals? Any method of payment accepted by the bookstore may be used to pay your rental fees. § Why do you need my credit card if I paid another way? Like when you rent a car, we keep your card on file just in case the book is not returned or damaged. § When do I return my rented textbooks? Rentals need to be turned in by the last day of finals. We will send you reminders through email. § What if I drop a class? The return policy for drop/add is the same for rented and purchased textbooks. § Can I decide to keep my book? Yes! You can convert your rental to a purchase within the first two weeks. § How can I order/reserve my textbooks? Just visit our website, emporia.bncollege.com, and use your course schedule to search for textbooks and materials.

§ A full refund is available, if returned within the first week of the semester, in your original form of payment with a receipt. § With a proof of schedule change, a full refund will be given in your original form of payment with a receipt during the first 30 days of classes. § No refunds given on textbooks without a receipt. § Textbooks are given in the same condition as when they were purchased. § All textbook sales are final after the first 30 days of classes.

All students work with an academic advisor to help them navigate college and learn about resources available on campus.
There are various tutoring services and student success programs throughout campus to help with your academic success and transition to college. One of the primary resources for academic success is ACES.
Student Advising Center Students and families should visit the Student Advising Center with questions and/or concerns. Advisors assist with: § Answering general questions about ESU, policies and procedures § Transitioning to college § Helping identify talents and interests § Selecting appropriate classes each semester § Guiding students to campus resources § Creating a well-rounded experience both in and out of the classroom When students have met specific requirements, they will be assigned an academic advisor in their major.

TRIO Student Support Services Community of Excellence
TRIO Student Support Services is committed to the success of each program participant. The staff creates a climate of support specifically designed to facilitate student learning and development, enabling the student to access, persist and graduate from college. SSS at Emporia State University is one of a group of federallyfunded programs known as TRIO.
Who Can Participate?

What Services are Offered?
§ Tutoring: Free one-on-one scheduled tutoring is provided in a range of general education and upper-level courses. The SSS tutoring program is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association. The tutoring lab in Morse Hall is fully accessible. § Academic Advising: Program staff are the academic advisors to first- and second-year program participants. Advising and resources are available for participants who are uncertain about major and/or careers. § Mentoring/Coaching: Each participant is assigned a mentor or academic coach. The mentor or coach stays in contact with participants and can answer questions and concerns or refer participants to the appropriate resource for help. Mentors/ Coaches call, write and/or meet regularly with their participants. § Courses: Courses are designed to meet the needs of participants throughout their college career. § Financial: Assistance in understanding the full range of federal student financial aid programs and its benefits is provided. Services are designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of our participants. Participants are notified of potential scholarship opportunities. § Computer Use: The SSS Study Lounge is furnished with computer stations and a study area open to participants on weekdays. § TRIO Honor Society: Chi Alpha Epsilon is our National Honor Society open to all participants who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher for two consecutive semesters. Members of XAE pledge to continue to excel academically, promote academic excellence in others and help those who genuinely aspire to the same goal. Center for Student Involvement The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is your go-to place for involvement opportunities on campus. We provide numerous ways to be involved at Emporia State, from the many social, cultural, and educational events we host to over 100 student organizations you can join. The Center for Student Involvement is comprised of the Offices of Diversity Student Programming, Student Activities and Community Service, Campus Engagement and Transition Programs, and Fraternity and Sorority Life. Union Activities Council and Associated Student Government are also housed in the center.

First Year Mentoring Program
How2ESU is Emporia State University’s package of transition programs. The mission of How2ESU is to welcome you to our campus community, to help make Emporia State your home away from home, and to provide you with the skills and resources to effectively engage in the academic and social life of the campus. The First Year Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for individual and personalized guidance as you navigate your first year at Emporia State. Students who register for the mentoring program will be paired in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a peer mentor. Your mentor will provide valuable advice and support and serve as a resource as you begin your journey at Emporia State. To participate in the mentoring program, register on the How2ESU website. Once a match has been made, your mentor will contact you over the phone.
The E-Experience: New Student Summer Camp
TradPlus & Veteran Student Services
The E-Experience is a two day, overnight event that takes place on the Emporia State University campus. Students who attend The E-Experience feel much more prepared and excited to start school in the fall. Through activities, discussions, and unique experiences led by the E-TEAM, you will learn tips and tricks to navigate your college experience and make the most of your time at Emporia State. The E-Experience is open to all new students, including students who plan to live on or off campus. It is FREE to attend, but space is limited so register soon! We will be offering three sessions of The E-Experience in summer 2020. Sessions begin around 2:00pm on day one and end around 2:00pm on day two. Session 1: June 27- 28 � Session 2: July 7-8 � Session 3: July 10-11
Hornet Orientation Hornet Orientation includes events, sessions, and activities happening just before the fall semester begins to welcome you to Emporia State, help you connect with your peers, and provide you with important resources for your success. From helping you meet new friends to learning your way around campus, we are here to make your transition to Emporia State as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
As a TradPlus (non-traditional) or veteran student, we know you may have challenges and needs distinct from students who fit the traditional college student profile. Maybe you are married and/ or a parent, perhaps you served in the armed forces or you are an active reservist, or you might be returning to school for the first time since high school. While your journey may be different than the traditional high-school-to-college path, you bring valuable perspectives and experiences that will enrich campus life inside and outside of the classroom. TradPlus and Veteran Student Support programs assist with your transition to Emporia State and can provide guidance and resources on your path to graduation. We provide a Veterans Lounge, a Single Parents Scholarship, assistance finding daycare, and general support and encouragement for our TradPlus and veteran students. Go to Hornet365.com and find the First Time User link in the lefthand menu. Follow the directions to setup your account and new password. The default password sent to you is only valid for the first login. You must change your password the first time, and before enrolling or filling out your housing application.

The brand and model of computer you get are not as important as it used to be. Most brands are pretty much the same. You don’t even really need to worry whether you get a Mac or PC. Either will work for you and we support both. § Use strong passwords. Passwords should be at least 10 characters or more, containing three out of the following four character categories: § Lowercase letters § Uppercase letters § Numbers § Special characters § Passwords cannot contain part of your name or username § Avoid using repeating or consecutive numbers or letters for example, 111, 123, aaa, or abc § TIP: An easy way to make up a long password is using a pass phrase and changing some of the letters to numbers or special characters. For example, ilikemondaym0rn!ngs! § Do not share your password with ANYONE. No one from IT, or ESU, will ever ask you to confirm or supply your password. If you need assistance, the IT Help Desk can change your password for a one- time-only login without being able to view your current password. § Safeguard your ESU ID at all times § Sign up for ESU Campus Alerts to receive emergency communications and other important information via text message
Email Services All students receive an ESU email account upon admittance to the university. This is your official ESU email account where you will receive information for Financial Aid, Admissions and Registration, as well as email from ESU faculty. Student email is hosted by Google and is accessible from Hornet365.com or from google.com. From Hornet365.com, click on the Student tile, then click Gmail. Log in with your complete email address (username@g.emporia.edu) and university password.
Residence Halls Each room in the residence halls is equipped with individual access points for wireless connections. Each unit has ethernet ports for gaming consoles or other devices that might require an ethernet port. Routers and hubs are not permitted on the Residence Hall networks.
