Wellness is self-directed and an ever-evolving process that is a result of a balanced life-style. Wellness is best accomplished when you maintain all seven elements together.

Physical Wellness is maintained by good nutrition, regular exercise, making informed & responsible decisions about health, avoiding harmful habits, and seeking medical assistance when necessary.

Emotional Wellness is having the ability to be aware of & accept your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, having an optimistic approach to life, and enjoying life despite occasional disappointments & frustrations. Occupational Wellness involves enrichment through work in which your career ambitions, professional satisfaction and job performance are all important. Intellectual Wellness is engage in creative & stimulating activities that allow you to & expand your knowledge.

Financial Wellness is discovering and using the tools and information available to you in order to make smart & informed decisions while you are in school and after you graduate. Spiritual Wellness involves personal values & beliefs that provide purpose in our elements of wellness can be the most personal piece of the puzzle when trying to place all seven dimensions together. Social Wellness refers to your ability to interact with people, respect yourself & others, develop meaningful relationships, contribute to oneâ€™s community, & develop quality communication skills. Our tobacco free campus policy is intended to support the goal of creating a safe, healthy, respectful learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and guests. Prohibited items include cigarettes (cloves, bidis, kreteks), chewing tobacco (spit, spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff, and snus), cigars and cigarillos, hookah and hookah smoked products, pipes, blunts, smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes. This policy also prohibits the use of any product simulating the previously mentioned products.

Student Accessibility and Support Services

Academic Center for Excellence and Success (ACES) Throughout campus there are various tutoring services and student success programs to help with your academic success and transition to college. One of the primary resources for academic success is ACES.

ACES is designed to offer an array of FREE dynamic services to boost all ESU students’ ability to complete their undergraduate degree.

Honors College §§ Leadership Training:

Honors College students receive intensive training in adaptive leadership, a leadership style developed at Harvard University and the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita. This training is provided by both Honors College students and faculty members who have mastered this cutting-edge approach to mobilize people in order to make progress on difficult issues our society faces.

§§ Community Engagement:

The Honors College strives to be recognized as a significant catalyst for improvement of communities in Kansas and beyond. Honors College students are given multiple opportunities to use their knowledge and skill to provide service to others through group and individual service projects.

§§ Relationship Building

Honors is about connecting with people and developing strong relationships with them. Honors College students are provided many opportunities to work with fellow students, faculty and staff, as well as people from all over the world on projects of shared interest. Becoming an agent of change for the common good is the mission of the Honors College.

§§ Mentoring:

Faculty and community mentors work one-on-one with Honor College students as students explore new ideas, develop new skills, and tackle leadership challenges. Mentored experiences provide the support and guidance necessary for students to achieve their goals and reach their potential.

§§ Living and Learning Spaces:

Honors College students have access to the Honors College Engagement Center, a technologically enhanced space. First-year students also have the opportunity to live on the Scholar’s Floor in the Residence Halls, where they form a unique and supportive learning community.

§§ Scholarships:

Honors College students who make adequate progress are eligible for annual renewable scholarships. These scholarships are a testament to Emporia State’s commitment to support Honors College students who maintain high academic, leadership, and service standards.

§§ Enhanced Curriculum:

A unique curriculum has been designed that further distinguishes the Honors College. Traditional honors courses lay a foundation for the curriculum, while honors contract courses expand and enhance offerings which allow students flexibility in their choices. Through an agreement with professors, Honors College students can transform traditional courses into honors contract courses. The combination of traditional honors courses and honors contract courses provides students with an enriched and broadened educational experience.

Center for Student Involvement The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is your go-to place for involvement opportunities on campus. We provide numerous ways to be involved at Emporia State, from the many social, cultural, and educational events we host to over 100 student organizations you can join. The Center for Student Involvement is comprised of the Offices of Diversity Student Programming, Student Activities and Community Service, Campus Engagement and Transition Programs, and Fraternity and Sorority Life. Union Activities Council and Associated Student Government are also housed in the center.

The Center for Student Involvement utilizes three core learning goals to enhance the impact of all our programming and services.

Civic leaders and team players are relationship builders who invest time and energy to enhance the community. These individuals collaborate effectively to serve the common good.

How2ESU is Emporia State Universityâ€™s package of transition programs. The mission of How2ESU is to welcome you to our campus community, to help make Emporia State your home away from home, and to provide you with the skills and resources to effectively engage in the academic and social life of the campus. The E-Experience: New Student Summer Camp

The E-Experience is a two day, overnight event that takes place on the Emporia State University campus. Students who attend The E-Experience feel much more prepared and excited to start school in the fall. Through activities, discussions, and unique experiences led by the E-TEAM, you will learn tips and tricks to navigate your college experience and make the most of your time at Emporia State. The E-Experience is open to all new students, including students who plan to live both on and off campus. It is FREE to attend, but space is limited so register soon! We will be offering three sessions of The E-Experience in summer 2019. Sessions begin around 2:00PM on day one and end around 2:00PM on day two. Session 1: June 27- 28

Hornet Orientation

Hornet Orientation includes events, sessions, and activities happening just before the fall semester begins to welcome you to Emporia State, help you connect with your peers, and provide you with important resources for your success. From helping you meet new friends to learning your way around campus, we are here to help make your transition to Emporia State as smooth and enjoyable as possible. All new students are highly encouraged to participate in Hornet Orientation events, whether you will be living on or off campus. Fall 2019 Hornet Orientation will take place August 16-17.

First Year Mentoring Program

The First Year Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for individual and personalized guidance as you navigate your first year at Emporia State. Students who register for the mentoring program will be paired in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a peer mentor. Your mentor will provide valuable advice and support and serve as a resource for you as you begin your journey at Emporia State. To participate in the mentoring program, register on the How2ESU website. Once a match has been made, your mentor will contact you over the phone and make plans to meet in person once you arrive on campus.

TradPlus & Veteran Student Services

As a TradPlus (non-traditional) or veteran student, we know that you may have challenges and needs distinct from students who fit the traditional college student profile. Maybe you are married and/ or a parent, perhaps you served in the armed forces or you are an active reservist, or you might be returning to school for the first time since high school. While your journey may be different than the traditional high-school-to-college path, you bring valuable perspectives and experiences that will enrich campus life inside and outside of the classroom. TradPlus and Veteran Student Support Programs assist with your transition to Emporia State and can provide guidance and resources on your path to graduation. We provide a Veterans Lounge, a Single Parents with Children Scholarship, assistance finding daycare, and general support and encouragement for our TradPlus and veteran students. Dining Services Emporia State University offers three dining and retail food locations in the Memorial Union: The Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, and Buzzcotti. The Hornets Nest is our residential dining hall, which offers a wide “all-you-care-to-eat” selection of cuisine. The Hornet Express offers Sub Connection, Wholly Habaneros, and Grill@Emporia State University, as well as a variety of grab-and-go snacks and beverages. Buzzcotti proudly serves Starbucks drinks to students and staff on campus. Stop by for a delicious pastry or beverage between classes!

Residential Meal Plans

All students living in the residence halls must have one of our three meal plans. Meal plans are selected at the time the student completes a housing contract. Students may change to a higher tier meal plan at any time, and may only change to a lower tier meal plan, up until the second Friday of classes each semester.

§§ All Access Plan

This meal plan allows you unlimited access to the Hornets Nest. You may enter the Hornets Nest as frequently as you wish, with no restrictions on the number of personal meals you may eat per day or per week. This plan includes $125 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, and Buzzcotti.

§§ Block 185 Meal Plan with $225 Dining Dollars

This plan allows you 185 meals per semester in the Hornets Nest. There are no restrictions on the number of meals you may eat per day. All 185 meals must be used in the Hornets Nest. This plan includes $225 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life and Starbucks.

§§ Block 100 Meal Plan with $450 Dining Dollars

This plan allows you 100 meals per semester in the Hornets Nest. There are no restrictions on the number of meals you may eat per day. All 100 meals must be used in the Hornets Nest. This plan includes $450 in Dining Dollars that can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life and Starbucks.

§§ Optional Dining Dollars

After you complete your housing contract, or up until the meal plan change deadline, you may choose to add $260 Dining Dollars to your meal plan ($130 per semester), which can be used at any dining location in the Memorial Union, including the Hornets Nest, Hornet Express, Slice of Life, and Starbucks.

Student Wellness Center The Student Wellness Center is conveniently located at 250 SE Morse Hall and includes both Health Services and Counseling Services. The mission of the Student Wellness Center is to enhance the academic success of all ESU students with an emphasis on wellness and personal growth. In other words, we believe that if you are physically and mentally healthy, you will be better equipped to do well in your classes and activities. Counseling Services

Staff includes Licensed Mental Health Providers who provide:

Individual, Couples, and Groups for issues ranging from learning coping skills, improving relationships, to mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, etc.

§§ Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP)

Includes substance abuse counseling, evaluation, screening, education, and presentations promoting the responsible use of alcohol and ways to stay safe.

§§ Biofeedback

Provides students skills to learn intentional relaxation to relieve test anxiety, enhance performance, and manage stress.

§§ The Healthy Relationship & Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) is a student-led program that is

committed to creating and promoting a safe environment for the Emporia State University community through educational initiatives and outreach. THRIVE seeks to reduce sexual violence and empower individuals to engage in healthy relationships. THRIVE, in accordance with Emporia State University’s policies and procedures, prohibits all forms of discrimination, including all types of harassment and all other types of violence. This includes-but is not limited to-domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, rape, acquaintance rape, and stalking.

There are no fees for services in Counseling Services. Go to www.emporia.edu/student-wellness/counseling for more information.

Health Services

Staff includes a physician, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses who provide: §§ Diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injury §§ Physical exams §§ Management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, asthma, etc. §§ Immunizations and TB tests §§ Male and female sexual health exams §§ Laboratory services, including lab orders from your family physician §§ Medications ordered by our providers, including antibiotics, birth control pills, inhalers §§ Procedures such as colposcopy, insertion of contraceptive devices §§ Minor surgical procedures such as mole removal §§ Presentations and Health Promotion events Claims will be filed for all students with private health insurance; students must provide their insurance card at the time of service. We will bill your insurance first, and then bill your student account for any remainder after we are reimbursed by insurance. However, if you have paid campus privilege fees, you will only pay $5.00 per office visit (not including labs).

Mandated Tuberculosis Screening

§§ ALL new students must complete this brief risk questionnaire §§ Students who do not complete this mandate will not be allowed to enroll next semester. §§ Complete the screening questionnaire through our student web portal at: emporia.edu/shc using your emporia.edu login §§ For more information: emporia.edu/student-wellness/healthservices/tuberculosis-policy.html §§ Students who screen at HIGH RISK must complete TB testing.

Required Alcohol Education

Violence Against Women’s Act (VAWA) Educational Program

§§ ALL incoming students must complete this program. §§ The link will be emailed to your campus email in the summer before the Fall semester. §§ Student Success (Not Any More) is an online, interactive prevention program designed to educated students how to properly identify sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking and domestic violence. Students will also learn how to report incidences of sexual violence to the appropriate school and . law enforcement authorities. Prevention, bystander intervention, and identifying rights and available options for survivors will be emphasized and discussed.

There is an insurance plan available for purchase for eligible Kansas Board of Regents students. For more information please go to their website at www.uhcsr.com.

Financial Aid Special Circumstances

§§ Contact the Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Veterans Services Office if you have had a change in your family situation - loss or reduction in employment, excessive out-of-pocket medical expenses, or loss of benefits.

Satisfactory Academic Progress

§§ Know the academic conditions of retaining federal, state, and institutional financial aid. §§ In a nutshell, a student must attain a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average; complete a minimum of 67% of all attempted hours (yes, grades of F and W do count as completed hours); and complete a degree in a timely manner.

Granting Proxy Access

In order for your parent(s) or guardian(s) to have access to your financial aid records, you have to provide consent. Textbook Rentals

Like when you rent a car, we keep your card on file just in case the book is not returned or damaged. §§ When do I return my rented textbooks? Need to be turned in by the last day of finals. We will send you reminders through email to help you remember! §§ What if I drop a class? The return policy for drop/add is the same for rented and pur chased textbooks. §§ Can I decide to keep my book? Yes! You can convert your rental to a purchase within the first two weeks.

Returns

§§ Full refund, if returned within the first week of the semester, in your original form of payment with a receipt. §§ With a proof of schedule change, a full refund will be given in your original form of payment with a receipt during the first 30 days of classes. §§ No refunds given on textbooks without a receipt. §§ Textbooks must be in the same condition as when they were purchased. §§ All textbook sales are final after the first 30 days of classes.

Who Can Participate?

What Services are Offered?

§§ Tutoring Free one-on-one scheduled tutoring is provided in a range of general education and upper-level courses. The SSS tutoring program is certified through the College Reading and Learning Association. The tutoring lab in Morse Hall is fully accessible.

§§ Academic Advising Staff members serve as the academic advisors to first- and secondyear program participants. Advising and resources are also available for participants who are uncertain about major and/or career selection. §§ Mentoring Each participant is assigned a mentor. The mentor is a staff member who stays in contact with assigned participants and can answer questions and concerns or refer participants to the appropriate resource for help. Mentors call, write and/or meet regularly with their participants. §§ Courses Courses are designed to meet the needs of participants throughout their college career. §§ Financial Assistance in understanding the full range of federal student financial aid programs and its benefits is provided. Services are designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of our participants. Participants are notified of potential scholarship opportunities. §§ Computer Use The SSS Study Lounge is furnished with computer stations and a study area open to participants on weekdays. §§ TRIO Honor Society Chi Alpha Epsilon - Epsilon Epsilon Chapter is our National Honor Society open to all participants who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher for two consecutive semesters. IT provides students access to many cloud-based Microsoft services, which allows you to work from anywhere on most internet connected devices. All students receive an ESU email account upon admittance to the university. This is your official ESU email account and is where you will receive information for Financial Aid, Admissions and Registration, as well as email from your ESU faculty. Student email is hosted by Google and is accessible from hornet.emporia.edu or from google.com. From hornet.emporia.edu, click on the Student tile, then click Gmail. DMCA and Peer to Peer File Sharing

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) states it is against the law to share copyrighted music, movies, games or books WITHOUT the permission of the copyright owner. The ESU DMCA Policy states you cannot download movies, music, games or books without purchasing them.

What you should know:

Q: Where should I not download from? A: Programs such as Frostwire, Utorrent, BearShare, Gnutella and services such as Usenet and Bittorent are NOT allowed. Q: What could happen if I do violate the DMCA Policy? A: This could lead to loss of network access. Q: Where can I get movies, music, books and games? A: Examples include Amazon.com, Apple iTunes Store, Pandora, Google Play, Microsoft Live Store, Netflix, Hulu

Safe and Secure

ESU offers free Anti-virus software for all students. Contact the IT Help Desk for assistance with downloading the latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection and free virus and spyware removal services. §§ Use strong passwords. Passwords should be at least 10 characters or more, containing three out of the following four character categories: §§ Lowercase letters §§ Uppercase letters §§ Numbers §§ Special characters §§ Passwords cannot contain part of your name or username §§ Avoid using repeating or consecutive numbers or letters for example, 111, 123, aaa, or abc §§ TIP: An easy way to make up a long password is using a pass phrase and changing some of the letters to numbers or special characters. For example, ilikemondaym0rn!ngs! §§ Do not share your password with ANYONE. No one from IT, or ESU, will ever ask you to confirm or supply your password. If you need assistance, the IT Help Desk can change your password for a one- time-only login without being able to view your current password. §§ Safeguard your ESU ID at all times §§ Sign up for ESU Campus Alerts to receive emergency communications and other important information via text message.

§§ If you would like to have more than one Ethernet connection in your residence hall room, use a network switch, not a router or hub.
