What a market! This is a statement I have been making on various phone calls, texts, and posts throughout this last year. Yes, the signs of low supply were there and known, but the variable that is almost impossible to predict — demand — has been off the charts!
The war waged on beef over the last three decades has come to an end, and now beef sits at the very top of the food pyramid. GLP1’s have driven protein demand to levels never seen before, and the whole food movement is alive and well, and will probably stay that way for a generation or two.
You would think with these high prices, we would get more people that want to be cowboys! Well, we haven’t seen that yet. The cow herd is not forecasted to see any kind of meaningful expansion until 2028. Everybody still wants to be a farmer, even though the market is clearly pointing towards planting marginal acres back to grassland.
Things that have changed a lot, even over the course of this past year, is the dominance of the F1 — beef on dairy — on the grid. The prime/choice spread has compressed significantly — currently sitting around $17, down from nearly $26 a year ago, and well below the elevated levels we saw in 2024 and 2025. The choice/ select spread has essentially evaporated — averaging less than $4 over the past 90 days, with nearly 15% of trading days printing negative, meaning select beef has actually been trading above choice. Compare that to a 2025 average of over $16, and the trend is hard to ignore.
Compounding this further is the trend toward longer days on feed. As the cow herd remains historically small — not expected to return to 2022 levels until 2032 at the earliest, if ever — feeders are running cattle longer to hit target weights. Days on feed and age are the two most important variables in grade, and more days means more choice and prime cattle hitting the grid, further pressuring those premiums. What this market actually needs are cattle that can handle those extra days and still grade with a yield of 3 or better — not 4’s and 5’s that discount the whole load. That is exactly why structure matters so much to us. A bull with good feet, legs, and frame can make a 1,550+ pound fat steer not only feasible, but profitable. At today’s target finish weights, structure is the difference between a feeder maintaining equity and giving it back at the packer.
The industry has spent the last decade chasing marbling and index scores, and while those are interesting data points, their direct relevance to sustainable profit is questionable at best. The unintended consequences of breeding solely for these traits are real — look, fleshing ability, and maternal function quietly disappear from the cattle, often not showing up until a generation or two down the road, and taking double or triple that time to recover. Some in the seedstock business have been slow to recognize what actually moves the needle for the rancher, the backgrounder, and the feedlot operator. We respect the data — we just refuse to be ruled by it. The volume of data points available today is akin to a restaurant with too many choices on the menu. The complexity of today’s systems has left us chasing simplicity. Back in the early 2000’s, when the decision was made to start selling bulls, Phil George wrote a letter to my Dad, wishing him good luck and offering encouragement. One line in that letter always stuck with me. That line was, “stay the course.”
We are establishing our course now, and its foundation will be simply good cattle. The traits we will focus on going forward are the same ones we have always focused on — low PAP, high growth, phenotypically pleasing cattle, and respectable calving ease. Our menu may be smaller, and there may be less variety, but when you come to our bull sale you will know exactly what to expect, and what’s on the menu will be the best we can offer. That consistency, rooted in honest cattle and honest values, is what we are building this program on.
Our faith in God, love of family, friends, loyal customers, and good health are what matter most. Good looking cattle and pretty horses don’t hurt either. Everything else is just window dressing

TERMS & CONDITIONS Terms of the sale are cash or check. All cattle must be settled for at the conclusion of the auction. Cattle will not be released from the sale premise until payment is received in full. Bulls that are not settled for info within seven days of the auction are not eligible for free delivery.
HERD HEALTH All bulls will be accompanied by proper health certificates for shipment.
GUARANTEE The sale offering is guaranteed to be fertile and reproductively sound in accordance with the terms and conditions as recommended by the American Angus Association. This guarantee does not cover injury or death. In the event of a problem, the buyer is responsible to return the animal to Queen Ann Cattle Company, and if it does not respond as a satisfactory breeder will have the option to select a suitable replacement if available or take a sale credit. Any potential claim needs to be made by September 1 of the year of purchase.

Every bull in this sale has been tested on the Angus GS 50K panel — over 50,000 genetic markers analyzed from a tissue sample. It gives you an accurate prediction of a bull’s genetics and what he will pass to his calves, without waiting years for progeny data.

When we set out to build the foundation of Queen Ann Cattle Company’s breeding program, we weren’t looking for a trend. We were looking for the real thing. We found it in SAV Arithmetic 3204 — a bull that doesn’t just check boxes on paper, but demands attention the moment you walk into the pen.
Born From the Best
Arithmetic comes from one of the most elite cow families in the Angus breed, raised by one of the finest seedstock operations in the world — Schaff Angus Valley of Saint Anthony, North Dakota. SAV has spent decades building cattle that are structurally correct, phenotypically superior, and genetically proven. Their commitment to producing functional, high-performing cattle is unmatched in the industry, and Arithmetic is a product of that relentless standard.
A Record That Speaks For Itself
In 2024, SAV Arithmetic 3204 made history. As a calf, he posted the heaviest weaning weight of his entire class in SAV history — an extraordinary achievement at an operation that has produced thousands of elite calves over decades. That record has since been broken, but Arithmetic still stands in the top three all-time at SAV. When you are talking about the best weaning weight calves ever produced by one of the world’s premier Angus operations, top three is not a footnote — it is a legacy.

A Note on PAP — And Why It Doesn’t Change Anything
We believe in being straight with you. Arithmetic carries a positive PAP EPD — and we won’t shy away from saying it. Some of his SAV brothers are superior in that single trait. Bulls like SAV Adrenaline 4138, whose sons will appear in our 2027 Queen Ann Spring Sale, carry negative PAP EPDs that give them a measurable edge for high-altitude operations.
But here is what we also know: PAP is one trait. Arithmetic excels in every other trait we care about — growth, structure, muscle expression, phenotype, and female quality. That combination is rare. It is why he became the foundation of this program, and it is why his actual PAP scores on his calves have been solid. We manage PAP through sire selection across our entire program. Arithmetic’s job is to build the cattle. He does it better than almost anyone.

Horses got me into cattle. I was 12 years old when I figured out that if you wanted to be a cowboy, you needed a good horse under you. That hasn’t changed. What has changed is twenty-plus years of learning exactly what it takes to build one.
We breed for size, speed, and quick feet — but what separates a good ranch horse from a great one is the mind and the stamina. These horses go all day, every day, in rough country. They have to. The sagebrush, rocks, and uneven ground of the high desert don’t care how pretty your horse is. Ours know where to put their feet, and they’re quiet enough to learn whatever you ask of them.
Four Gin Hancock — The Ranch Foundation
The foundation of our ranch program runs through Four Gin Hancock — a son of Four Six Hancock out of Four Gin West. The Hancock blood is legendary for a reason. These horses are built for the long haul. They are tough, big-boned, and sensible, and Four Gin has given us exactly that, year after year. He has been at the ranch for over a decade and is still producing. He was purchased out of the Haythorn Sale and has been one of the best investments this program has ever made.
Twice Over Whiskey — The Performance Prospect
In Twice Over Whiskey we have something special on the performance side. A grandson of Once In A Blu Boon through his sire Irish Blu, Whiskey carries elite rope horse genetics from top to bottom. He is paid into the Riata Buckle, eligible for Royal Crown Roping, ARHFA futurities, and the NRCHA Stallion Stakes. The athleticism and cow sense in that pedigree comes through in every foal he produces. His dam, Miss Low Blaze, by Double My Whiskey, adds another layer of proven performance lineage.
Together, these two studs give our cavvy something you don’t find very often — the ranch toughness and sure-footedness of deep Hancock breeding, paired with the athleticism, speed, and cow sense of elite cutting and roping genetics. The result is a horse that can do it all, and do it every day.
Solid ranch horse and head horse, a good looking horse that is easy to be around, gentle enough for about anyone. He has been hauled a little on the head side and is making a solid rope horse. T-Grey is just a no-nonsense horse, saddle him up and go to work on the ranch or in the arena.
This is a solid and seasoned heel horse that has been hauled extensively. He’s quiet in the box, runs, rates, and stops big. He is as easy of a horse to heel on as you will find. Gentle horse that’s easy to be around with plenty of ranch use and outside riding as well.
