Research Funding
Despite the adverse environment and the task of funding the building of the new Hope Cancer Trials Centre at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Hope has recently announced and confirmed more vital funding to help our partners continue to provide life-saving research and care for local cancer patients.
£40,000 will be committed this year once again in support of the work of the Hope Nurse at the new Centre. Our Hope Nurse provides extra care and support to cancer trials patients passing through the new Centre on their treatment journey.
Sheila Willson from Oadby was the first patient to access the expanded and refurbished Centre. Sheila, who is receiving treatment for myeloma, has been visiting the Hope Cancer Trials Centre since June 2017. She receives weekly treatment over a five week cycle, which has continued throughout the whole pandemic. She said: “Hope’s expansion is lovely; it has more room, is very spacious and looks really nice. The Centre means a lot to me. I feel very comfortable there, and everyone is so nice and helpful.”
Funding support of £15,000 per year for three years (total of £45,000) was also announced to part-fund a Hope PhD Studentship. The College of Life Sciences at the University had offered to fund two thirds of a PhD Studentship if our Centre partners were able to match fund with £15,000. With the aspirations of becoming a cancer theme in the BRC as mentioned in the CEO’s introduction, Hope is extremely keen to help the Centre expand critical basic research mass wherever possible. Matched funding is a great way of deploying our donations as it means other funding avenues are opened up by our initial investment.
Now onto even better news… The Hope Cancer Trials Centre has reopened at Leicester’s Hospitals, following a circa £1.5 million expansion. As you may know, this facility gives patients opportunities to trial new medicines to treat a range of cancers.
This means more cancer trials can take place in Leicester and even more patients can benefit from access to potential treatments not currently available on the NHS.
The expansion will mean that ‘early phase’ cancer trials can go from strength to strength in Leicester. Cancer treatments are rapidly changing, and the Centre is currently focused on developing research using ‘bio-specifics’, a new generation of treatments that – unlike traditional chemotherapy - target cancer while leaving other cells in the body with little or no damage.
couldn’t have been done without our fabulous Hope Supporters, who have helped
raise these crucial funds over the past year. So, for that, we thank each and every one of you! You can read more on our website!

Reboot, reset, renew - Hope for the future
As we put 2020 behind us, many charities large and small are feeling the negative effects of the pandemic. Although it has been an unbelievably challenging time, our charity is delighted that we have been able to raise the funds needed to complete our Hope for Life Appeal and contribute to an amazing transformation of new facilities within our local hospital. The Hope family of supporters, including institutions, local businesses and loyal individual donors have been fantastic in rising to the challenge of getting this done. In such unprecedented times, our focus now needs to be on continuing fundraising to ensure we are able to support ongoing research locally, that will help the new Hope Cancer Trials Centre to uncover potential new drugs and treatments.
Charities like Hope, with urgent missions can never stand still and so to the future we look. We need to continue to contribute funding to our partners’ research aspirations over the next two years The Leicester Centre is in the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR)/CRUK Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre network. Despite the Covid pandemic and the fact that many researchers are undertaking clinical work and in some parts of the UK being redeployed, excellent progress continues to be made against objectives.
Leicester also hosts an NIHR Biomedical Research Centre which currently has themes in Diabetes and Lifestyle, Cardiovascular Medicine and Respiratory Medicine. Later this year the renewal process will start for the national Biomedical Research Centres (BRC) network. There is an opportunity to develop new themes for existing networks. A cancer precision medicine theme is being developed which would become part of the Leicester BRC case. Currently there are only six cancer themes in existing BRCs with the largest being held at the Royal Marsden in Greater London. This is clearly an extremely competitive area but if successful, the funding associated with it would be transformational for the delivery of cancer research in Leicester. Once again, Hope will step in, as always, to support this aspiration and hopefully help draw in larger national research investment into Leicester.

Farewell to Tracey
Some Hope for Life key donors and partners.
This past year has been incredibly difficult, and our appeal has benefited tremendously from the generosity of key institutions, businesses and individuals and we list some below. If it were not for your donations, we might not be where we are now, so we wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
We are sad to announce that after almost four years, Tracey, our Corporate and Events Fundraiser will be leaving us to take up an exciting opportunity in the commercial auto-trade sector within her family’s business.
In her time here, Tracey has done fantastically well for us at Hope. Professional and committed, through some major and key events, she has helped build lasting and fruitful relationships with the local business community in a variety of ways. We will miss her!
However, to help ensure a smooth handover to her successor and a transition from Hope, she will be with us for a little while yet we are pleased to say, on a part-time basis. Thanks for all your hard work Tracey and good luck from Team Hope!!

Greetham Village Christmas Dinner
peeling sprouts for 100 people?!
For several years in Greetham village community centre, Sally Cluley, on the last Sunday in November, has cooked a Christmas dinner for over 100 villagers with the hall and tables beautifully decorated. Can you imagine peeling sprouts for 100 people?! It was always the complete meal with all the trimmings, followed by Christmas pudding, tea/coffee and her delicious home-made mince pies. The neighbour’s daughters, Lucy and Catherine provided pavlovas as an extra pudding. She was very ably helped by husband, Graham and friends Jane, Lorraine and Pam. The monies made from these meals and from a raffle have always been given to Hope.
Sadly, because of the pandemic, last year’s event had to be cancelled. Instead, Sally and members of the church held an outside Christmas bazaar and fortunately it was a dry day. The proceeds were to be shared equally between Hope and the church.
As usual, Sally was given many cash donations and her final amount raised for Hope was £855
Greetham Village Christmas Raffle
At the same event, Jenny Smith, a Hope volunteer since 2002, organised a raffle for a Christmas hamper full of donated seasonal goodies.
It made £850!
The total raised by Greetham Village came to £1,705.

In Memoriam
In memory of a remarkable woman...
Bogumila (Bohdanka, Danni) Madylus (née Domaradz)
12th October 1954 - Górowo Iławeckie, Poland - 7th January 2021, Leicestershire
Words seem utterly inadequate to say something which honours enough the incredible person that was my mother. She overcame many adversities throughout her lifetime and was always so courageous in the face of adversity, strong and graceful with an unparalleled zest for life. The very personification of joie de vivre.
On New Year’s Eve of 2011, my mother was involved in a horrendous car accident. She passed out whilst driving due to pneumonia and crashed into the back of a bus. Incredibly, nobody was seriously injured. She sustained some deep bruising to the left side of her chest where, a year later, she developed breast cancer. We witnessed my mother experience eight years of intermittent hospital appointments, biopsies, surgery and treatment. She very rarely complained of the pain and discomfort and whenever one type of treatment ceased to be effective, she would always ask, “OK, what next?” At times, it was a very difficult journey both physically and emotionally, but we shall be forever grateful for the pioneering treatment made available to her. As one professor told us, it is becoming more and more possible to live with certain cancers, as long as the growth can be contained. This is, of course, thanks to all the vital ongoing research and trials.
One of the many things my mother taught me is that life
is incredibly precious, and we should never, ever give up hope, no matter how many curve balls the universe decides to throw our way. She leaves behind family and friends who will forever cherish the unconditional love and warmth which she embraced us in everyday of our lives. We will
miss her more than can ever be expressed. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and boss.
