HOME

Quick Ways to Freshen Up Your Home for Fall As fall weather sets in, many homeowners take advantage of cooler days to spruce up their living spaces since they’re confined indoors. However, fitting all that work into a busy season filled with school, sports and other family demands isn’t always easy.

Control the clutter. Even the cleanest homes still look messy when they’re disorganized, but it’s an uphill battle for many to keep clutter from accumulating. Tackle the house room-by-room. Divide clutter into three piles: keep, donate and discard. Give floors a facelift. After months spent outside, it’s inevitable that you’ve tracked some of the great outdoors back inside with you. Get your floors back in their best condition with a simple carpet washing innovation like Hoover’s Smartwash Automatic Carpet Cleaner. An auto-mix feature precisely mixes and dispenses solution for optimal cleaning, and operation is as easy as it comes: push forward to wash, pull back to dry. Let the powerful brushes do all the work to gently remove embedded dirt and debris. Add some cheery light. If you’re like many homeowners, light fixtures aren’t high on your list for everyday cleaning. However, over time dust and debris build up, which can impact the quality of light. Take time to wipe down fixtures for a cleaner, brighter ambiance in minutes. Swap out bedding. Updating the textiles in a room is an easy way to instantly transform a space. Bedding for cooler seasons tends to be heavier and darker, so it’s the perfect time to make a switch to sheets and comforters that are not only practical but look cozy and inviting for the cold nights ahead. Similarly, you can swap out airy drapes and window treatments for more robust versions that reflect the season while helping keep drafts at bay. Make DIY cleaning supplies. Some of the most effective cleaning agents can be made at home, so you never have to worry about running out. Make your own all-purpose spray cleaner by combining a quart of water with four tablespoons of baking soda. For extra cleaning power, you can mix vinegar with water and add a few drops of essential oils for an appealing scent. Another quick fix: Run citrus peels through the garbage disposal for an easy clean and fresh smelling kitchen.

Ways to Find Great Deals on Used Cars The history of the vehicle is important, so be sure to get the vehicle history report. Remember to have the vehicle inspected before you buy it. Having the vehicle history and inspection reports will provide information on major damage and maintenance work that the vehicle has had.

Best Time to Buy a Car Time of day: You will notice that a lot of dealers seem to be more willing to negotiate later in the evening. That’s because most sales professionals want to go home and relax. Even if you get a good deal, remember that you don’t have to make the decision right there. Time of month: Most dealerships have monthly quotas that are set every month. If you wait until close to the end of the month, there is a chance that dealers will work very hard to negotiate lower prices. Time of year: It may sound strange but even the time of year can affect how dealers negotiate pricing. It is said that the best time of year is early fall. Check the Car’s History The history of the vehicle is important, so be sure to get the vehicle history report. Remember to have the vehicle inspected before you buy it. Sometimes there are unseen damages that might have occurred. Having the vehicle history and inspection reports will provide information on major damage and maintenance work that the vehicle has had. Don’t Bring Up Your Trade-in Remember you do not have to have a trade-in to get the best deal on a vehicle purchase. It is best to not discuss putting down any money or your trade-in until a final price of your new vehicle has been settled on. Tell the Dealership You’re Shopping Around Be sure that the salesperson understands that you are comparing prices with other dealerships. The sales people will try to convince you that they have the lower price. If you come in with a list of quotes, spreadsheets, or even checklists, the dealership may be willing to make a deal at a lower price instead of risking that you may take your business somewhere else. Take Your Time Remember that you are in control; not the dealership. Most sales people are there to help you and take your needs into consideration. Do not be pushed or pressured into something you cannot afford. Remember to stick to your budget.

How to Build the Perfect Playlist Music can set the mood, no matter the occasion. Whether you’re playing jazz classics to give your dinner party a sophisticated ambience or blasting the latest dance-pop tracks for motivation on the treadmill, music is able toprovide the soundtrack to different aspects of peoples’ lives. Tailor the Playlist to Your Audience Crafting your playlist based on who you’re playing it for, like guests at a house party or family barbecue, can help you select the proper vibe, tempo, length and theme. The goal should always be to include songs the majority of your guests will enjoy. Just keep in mind that if you’re relying on a single playlist for an occasion, you’ll want to ensure that it’s long enough to last until the end of the party. A good rule of thumb is at least 30-40 tracks. Make it Personal Because different genres and styles of music are available in abundance, your songs and playlists can reflect who you are and the way you feel. A music streaming service like Spotify allows listeners to build personal playlists as well as listen to expert-curated playlists on-demand using its free mobile app. Mix it Up Keep people interested with a wide variety of slow and fast, new and classic, and various musical styles. Don’t be afraid to combine genres or decades. This ensures you strike chords among listeners of various ages and backgrounds. When in doubt, add classic crowd-pleasers and chart-topping hits of today. Update Often f you’re creating a playlist that you plan to keep going back to, like a workout playlist, keep in mind you can update it whenever you like to keep it fresh. Switching out songs from time to time can make the listening experience more enjoyable. Collaborate With Others Allowing friends or guests to have access to your playlist and make their own additions ensures that everyone’s music tastes are represented. Another plus: it’s a fun way to discover hot new tracks and artists your friends and family are listening to. Music is both universal and personal, so let your playlists tell a story about you. If you’ll use the list for entertaining, sprinkle in some extra flavor with tracks that appeal to the broader group or specific guests, and just like that, you have a winning playlist for your next party.

Fall Into a Fitness Routine Fall is notorious for comfort foods like pumpkin spice lattes and game day nachos. Combine these tempting seasonal staples with darker, shorter days and it can be hard to maintain an active mindset. Despite the enticement to indulge, you can keep your active lifestyle going or even kick off a new fitness regime. This year, take advantage of the winds of change when the seasons switch and commit to smart habits for a healthy fall. Dress for success. As the temperatures drop, you may be tempted to bundle up before heading outdoors to exercise, and for your warm-up and cool-down period, that’s not a bad idea. However, while you’re in the midst of your workout, it’s easy to get overheated. Wear layers that you can shed as you begin to sweat and consider moisture-wicking materials that can prevent sweaty clothes from getting cold in the breeze. Stay hydrated. You may not feel as thirsty when you exercise in cooler weather, but it’s just as important to keep your body well hydrated. When you sweat, you lose more than just water. An option like Propel Electrolyte Water helps you replace what’s lost in sweat through its key electrolyte – sodium – and supports hydration by stimulating thirst and aiding in fluid balance. With the same level of electrolytes as Gatorade, zero calories and no sugar, it can be a perfect choice to support your active lifestyle. Learn more at propelwater.com . Opt for early workouts. When dark comes early, it can trick your mind into thinking it’s time to wind down for the night. Avoid that motivation pitfall by planning your workout earlier in the day, such as first thing in the morning or during your lunch break. If early mornings are daunting, remember that it won’t take long to shift your sleep schedule and early exercise is a caffeine-free way to put some energy into your day. Find exercises you enjoy. Forcing yourself through exercises you despise will only backfire in the long run. If you’re not a runner, look for other ways to get your cardio pumping. Interval walking with varied paces and elevation can be an effective alternative or look at ideas like kickboxing or aerobics that you can have fun with while working up a sweat. Indulge in moderation. Virtually every expert agrees that an occasional indulgence is perfectly acceptable, but use caution when the fall goodies start tempting. Those warm, rich desserts and drinks are filled with empty calories that can make all your hard work go to waste. Set realistic goals. Having a long-term goal is a good idea, but be sure to set attainable expectations for yourself, including some milestones you can celebrate along the way to keep your motivation strong. Be realistic about how much time you can dedicate to fitness with your other life demands so you can set your goals accordingly.

How to Make Smart Decisions During Benefits Enrollment Season Every fall, millions of American workers spend time making financial decisions that will affect them for the entire upcoming year. Benefits enrollment season is a critical time for choosing coverages that protect the health and financial stability of individuals and families. Despite the importance of these decisions, nearly half (49 percent) of people spend less than 30 minutes reviewing their options before making selections, according to research from Unum, a leader in employee benefits. Personal finance expert Laura Adams said not carefully reviewing all your employee benefits options can mean leaving money on the table or serious gaps in your financial safety net. “Employers are increasingly offering consumerdirected health plans, which typically charge lower premiums but higher deductibles and other out-ofpocket costs,” Adams said. “Because of these additional financial burdens, I always recommend taking advantage of your employer’s health savings account (HSA).”

● Disability insurance can help replace a portion of your paycheck should you get sick or injured and can’t work – you can think of it as income protection. Most plans will pay up to 60 percent of your salary if you’re unable to work due to a covered illness or injury. ● Term life insurance provides affordable protection for a specific period. Most people buy it during their working years so their death benefit can help loved ones manage their financial needs. ● Accident insurance can pay you directly for costs associated with urgent care and emergency room visits, ambulance transportation and follow-up care. ● Dental insurance is typically affordable and usually covers preventative cleanings, xrays, exams and standard procedures. Fillings, crowns and other procedures are also generally included at a reduced rate to the policyholder. ● Vision insurance is another low-cost voluntary benefit that covers routine eye exams, lenses, frames and, often, discounts on vision correction surgery.
