HOO’S N HU GRY Irish heritage extends to the kitchen, too Although not necessarily known for its cuisine, Ireland does boast many delicious dishes that have withstood the test of time. Sampling some of these hearty and delicious dishes may not require a trip overseas, especially for people who live in communities with a heavy Irish influence. Many eateries and chefs are rediscovering Ireland's culinary heritage. Here's what you might find on the menu.
· Irish stew: Irish stew is the ultimate in one-pot cooking. Traditionally made with mutton, Irish stew is stewed for hours until tender. Potatoes, onions and carrots may be added to the pot. Today, you may find Irish stew made with lamb, stock and herbs to give it an intense flavor profile. · Bacon and cabbage: This tasty dish consists of unsliced back bacon boiled with cabbage and potatoes, and sometimes turnips and carrots are added. The bacon used may vary, but the bacon is usually cured using brine. Corned beef and cabbage was born in the late 19th century when Irish immigrants living in the United States began substituting corned beef for the bacon because corned beef was more readily available. · Coddle: This is the ultimate way to use leftovers come the end of the week. The name comes from the coddling of ingredients in a one-pot stew. Boiled bacon, potatoes and onions can be paired with slices of pork sausage and left to simmer. · Dublin Lawyer: Shellfish is a popular dish in Irish coastal cities. In fact, St. Patrick himself was not Irish, having been born in an area of Great Britain then referred to as Roman Britain because it was still governed by the Roman Empire. St. Patrick's birthplace is not the only interesting fact surrounding St. Patrick's Day that might surprise even the most devoted of Patty's Day revelers.
· · Arguably the most famous St. Patrick's Day parade in the world, the New York City parade is more than 250 years old. The Big Apple's first St. Patrick's Day parade took place on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the British military marched through the city. · · While New York and Boston host the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the United States, more than 100 parades are held in honor of St. Patrick throughout the country each year. · · The United States is not the only place to enjoy a spirited celebration of St. Patrick. Montreal, Canada, whose city flag includes a shamrock, has held an annual St. Patrick's Day parade since 1824. Elsewhere in Canada, Toronto hosts an annual St. Patrick's Day parade that typically attracts more than 100,000 spectators. · · Irish ranks among the top five ancestries in nearly every state in the United States. The lone exceptions are New Mexico and Hawaii. Important Decisions Regarding Your Life Insurance Few people want to face their own mortality when they are in the prime of their lives. However, thinking ahead and making advanced plans can save family members considerable heartache. Life insurance policies can help men and women make things easier for their spouses, children or siblings.
Determine the amount of insurance you will need. Make a list of expected expenses after you pass away. These may include any residual mortgage payments, school tuitions, automotive payments, or funeral expenses. In addition, approximate how much your family will need to live comfortably in your absence.
Decide on the type of policy. Life insurance policies come in two broad categories: term and whole life. Term life insurance may be less expensive upfront, as it only provides coverage for a set number of years. It will only pay out if the policy holder dies during this "term." Whole life insurance, also called "cash value," usually costs more, but accumulates a cash value that can be borrowed against, and it pays out whenever a person passes away. Choose among reputable companies. You want to ensure the life insurance company you pick will be around for years and has a strong reputation, so give ample consideration to each company you explore before making a final decision. ·Know the waiting period. Many policies establish a period of time on policies wherein there is very little cash-out value and the company will not pay out the full death benefit.
