Mia’s Story

February is Heart Month. It is the time of the year that we focus on the fact that heart disease is the number one killer in New Orleans. While heart disease is often thought of as a man’s disease, we know that is not the case. Not only is heart disease the leading killer of women, but it is also the leading birth defect in babies. In February, we highlight the strength and the fight of these little hearts with Congenital Heart Defect Week, February 7-14. The word “congenital” means existing at birth. Congenital heart defects are structural problems with the heart present at birth. They result when a mishap occurs during heart development soon after conception and often before the mother is aware that she is pregnant. Defects range in severity from simple problems, such as “holes” between chambers of the heart, to very severe malformations, such as complete absence of one or more chambers or valves. This is the case with Mia Portera. At twoyears-old, Mia is full of energy as she mimics everything her brother does. She looks at him with admiration as she follows him around the room. To the eye, she looks like a normal toddler exploring the world with her brother by her side and her bright red glasses. But Mia’s little body has been through quite a bit. Her torso is covered with scars. Those scars are lifelines that tell the story of Mia’s fight for life and to defy the odds. Mia was diagnosed with Shone’s Complex, a rare congenital heart disease in which four or more defects affect the flow of blood into and out of the left ventricle. In her short life, she has had to undergo countless medical procedures. Three of them being major open heart surgeries. And, Mia’s battle isn’t over.
She will require more procedures, plus a lifetime of monitoring. After spending any time with Mia, you can tell that she will not let that define her. She has spunk and spirit that radiate from her that will take her far in life beyond her diagnosis. And that is why Mia embodies the American Heart Association’s mission. A diagnosis of Shone’s Complex, in the past would have been a death sentence. But through research conducted by the American Heart Association, more is known about the disease and how to treat it. Doctors are better prepared to diagnose and operate on Mia to change that diagnosis from a death sentence to something the she can overcome. Although the rate of Congenital Heart Defects has not decreased over time, more infants with heart defects are surviving to adulthood because of advancements made through research. The American Heart Association is working hard each and every day to fund research right here in New Orleans, that helps to save lives through advanced systems of care, medicines, treatment and prevention.
