Publisher’s Note WHAT HELD HIM THERE?

By: His servant, Connie Kramer May 18, 1997

He hung on that Cross; so bleak and bare, As He suffered; “What held Him there?” Was it nails they drove in His Hands? Or was it great love, for all lands? He could have called legions of angels, To take Him down, and His agony quell. Huge rusty nails in His hands and feet, Did not hold Him there; ‘twas LOVE so sweet! Great wondrous love, given for me and you, Love bound Him secure; vast love and true! He bought our souls with His precious Blood, Relieved God’s wrath with that crimson Flood! Those nails did not hold Him to that tree, “What held Him there?” love for you and me! Love so very willing and so true, Deep heart-felt love, we can’t construe! ************************ During this time be sure to remember the sacrifice of Christ and the love of your mother. Be Happy by Davy Jones Around twenty years ago I was living in Seattle and going through hard times. I could not find satisfying work and I found this especially difficult as I had a lot of experience and a Master’s degree. To my shame I was driving a school bus to make ends meet and living with friends. I had lost my apartment. I had been through five interviews with a company and one day between bus runs they called to say I did not get the job. I went to the bus barn like a zombie of disappointment. Later that afternoon, while doing my rounds through a quiet suburban neighborhood I had an inner wave - like a primal scream - arise from deep inside me and I thought “Why has my life become so hard?” “Give me a sign, I asked... a physical sign - not some inner voice type of thing.” Immediately after this internal scream I pulled the bus over to drop off a little girl and as she passed she handed me an earring saying I should keep it in case somebody claimed it. The earring was stamped metal, painted black and said ‘BE HAPPY’. At first I got angry - yeah, yeah, I thought. Then it hit me. I had been putting all of my energies into what was wrong with my life rather than what was right! I decided then and there to make a list of 50 things I was grateful for. At first it was hard, then it got easier. One day I decided to up it to 75. That night there was a phone call for me at my friend’s house from a lady who was a manager at a large hospital. About a year earlier I had submitted a syllabus to a community college to teach a course on stress management. (Yup, you heard me. ;-)

She asked me if I would do a one-day seminar for 200 hospital workers. I said yes and got the job. My day with the hospital workers went very well. I got a standing ovation and many more days of work. To this day I KNOW that it was because I changed my attitude to gratitude. Incidentally, the day after I found the earring the girl asked me if anyone had claimed it. I told her no and she said “I guess it was meant for you then.” I spent the next year conducting training workshops all around the Seattle area and then decided to risk everything and go back to Scotland where I had lived previously. I closed my one man business, bought a plane ticket and got a six month visa from immigration. One month later I met my wonderful English wife and best friend of 15 years now. We live in a small beautiful cottage, two miles from a paved road in the highlands of Scotland. ‘THE ONLY ATTITUDE IS GRATITUDE’ has been my motto for years now and yes, it completely changed my life.

Simple Fitness Tips for Busy Women by Dr. Samantha V. Evans Busy women don’t always have time to eat healthy so we end up grabbing a meal that may not provide us with the nutrients needed to sustain us. Too add, we may not have time to work out or visit the gym to work off those un-wanted calories, so to help busy women lose weight and stay fit, I recommend the following: • Prepare light meals that you can eat at intervals during the day such as fruits salads or sliced fruit or meals you can just pop into the microwave when you get hungry. • Schedule your meals. Many women do not eat breakfast due to the fast pace of their lives but breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day. Studies show that eating a healthy breakfast (as opposed to the kind containing doughnuts) can help give you: A more nutritionally complete diet, higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals Improved concentration and performance in the classroom or the boardroom More strength and endurance to engage in physical activity Lower cholesterol levels It will also help control your weight.

can help the busy woman immensely to reduce tummy fat and extra pounds. • Stay away from carbonated drinks such as sodas because the sodium in them potentially increases weight. • Work out. Purchase some light weights so that you can develop muscle mass. The muscles will increase your metabolism and help you lose fat. • Keep nutritional snacks handy. Snacks such as nuts and fruits will help to cut your cravings. Therefore, preventing you from overeating and putting on weight. To gain more nutrition add fiber filled foods such as leafy foods. • You really don’t need to spend hours planning what healthy foods to eat. The easier way is to just remove the unhealthy foods from your cupboards and fridge. Additionally, when you go grocery shopping again, simply select foods that are healthier for you and aide weight lose regardless of your busy schedule. Finally, it is a proven fact that women who eat healthy and make good choices regarding exercising live longer and healthier.

Motherhood

We are sitting at lunch when she casually mentions that she and her husband are thinking of “starting a family”. “We’re taking a survey,” she says, half joking. “Do you think I should have a baby?” “It will change your life,” I say carefully, keeping my tone neutral. “I know,” she says, “no more sleeping in on the weekend, no more spontaneous vacations...” But that is not what I meant at all. I look at my friend, trying to decide what to tell her. I want her to know what she will never learn in childbirth classes. I want to tell her that the physical wounds of child bearing heal, but that becoming a mother will leave her with an emotional wound so raw that she will be forever vulnerable. I consider warning her that she will never read a newspaper again without asking “What if that had been MY child?” That every plane crash, every fire will haunt her. That when she sees pictures of starving children, she will wonder if anything could be worse than watching your child die.

I look at her carefully manicured nails and stylish suit and think that no matter how sophisticated she is, becoming a mother will reduce her to the primitive level of a bear protecting her cub. That an urgent call of “Mom!” will cause her to drop a soufflé or her best crystal without a moment’s hesitation. I feel I should warn her that no matter how many years she has invested in

her career, she will be professionally derailed by motherhood. She might arrange for child care, but one day she will be going into an important business meeting and she will think about her baby’s sweet smell. She will have to use every ounce of her discipline to keep from running home, just to make sure her baby is all right. I want my friend to know that everyday decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy’s desire to go to the men’s room rather than the women’s at McDonalds will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom. However decisive she may be at the office, she will second-guess herself constantly as a mother. Looking at my attractive friend, I want to assure her that eventually she will shed the pounds of pregnancy, but she will never feel the same about herself. That her life, now so important, will be of less value to her once she has a child. That she would give it up in a moment to save her offspring, but will also begin to hope for more years - not to accomplish her own dreams, but to watch her children accomplish theirs. I want her to know that a cesarean scar or shiny stretch marks will become badges of honor.

My friend’s relationship with her husband will change, but not in the ways she thinks. I wish she could understand how much more you can love a man who is always careful to powder the baby or never hesitates to play with his child. I think she should know that she will fall in love with him again for reasons she would now find very unromantic. I wish my friend could sense the bond she’ll feel with women throughout history who have tried desperately to stop war and prejudice and drunk driving. I hope she will understand why I can think rationally about most issues, but become temporarily insane when I discuss the threat of nuclear war to my children’s future.

I want to describe to my friend the exhilaration of seeing your child learn to ride a bike. I want to capture for her the belly laugh of a baby who is touching the soft fur of a dog or cat for the first time. I want her to taste the joy that is so real, it actually hurts. My friend’s quizzical look makes me realize that tears have formed in my eyes. “You’ll never regret it,” I say finally. Then I reach across the table, squeeze my friend’s hand, and offer a silent prayer for her, and for me, and for all of the mere mortal women who stumble their way into this most wonderful of callings. The blessed gift of God and that of being a Mother.

Have You Tasted My Jesus? At the University of Chicago Divinity School each year they have what is called “Baptist Day”. It is a day when all the Baptists in the area are invited to the school because they want the Baptist dollars to keep coming in. On this day each one is to bring a lunch to be eaten outdoors in a grassy picnic area. Every “Baptist Day” the school would invite one of the greatest minds to lecture in the theological education enter. One year they invited Dr. Paul Tillich. Dr. Tillich spoke for 2 ½ hours proving that the resurrection of Jesus was false. He quoted scholar after scholar and book after book. He concluded that since there was no such thing as the historical resurrection the religious tradition of the church was groundless, emotional mumbo-jumbo, because it was based on a relationship with a risen Jesus, who in fact, never rose from the dead in any literal sense. He then asked if there were any questions. After about 30 seconds, an old, dark skinned preacher with a head of short-cropped, woolly white hair stood up in the back of the auditorium. Docta Tillich, I got one question, he said as all eyes turned toward him. He reached into his sack lunch and pulled out an apple and began eating it. “Docta Tillich (CRUNCH, MUNCH), my question is a simple question (CRUNCH, MUNCH). Now, I ain’t never read them books you read (CRUNCH, MUNCH)

and I can’t recite the Scriptures in the original Greek (CRUNCH, MUNCH). I don’t know nothin’ about Niebuhr and Heidegger (CRUNCH, MUNCH)…” He finished the apple. “All I wanna know is: This apple I just ate, was it bitter or sweet?” Dr. Tillich paused for a moment and answered in exemplary scholarly fashion: I cannot possibly answer that question, for I haven’t tasted your apple. The white-haired preacher dropped the core of his apple into his crumpled paper bag, looked up at Dr. Tillich and said calmly, “Neither have you tasted my Jesus.” The 1000 plus in attendance could not contain themselves. The auditorium erupted with applause and cheers. Dr. Tillich thanked his audience and promptly left the platform. Have you tasted Jesus? Please pass this on Saints! God has risen, and he’s coming back one day! Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. If you have, rejoice in the hope of the resurrection that your faith in Him brings. Psalm 34:8 Submitted by Richard
