What’s My Style? By Jennifer Hurd, ED.D.
Getting students to be actively engaged in the learning process is key to their success. One important aspect of getting students engaged is to know their learning preferences. We all have learning preferences or styles. These are the ways that we process information. We tend to have a preferred learning style, but we have some of every style. Let’s begin by identifying the learning styles or preferences. There are four key learning styles. I use questions to help people understand their styles. Let’s pretend to divide a piece of paper into four equal parts or quadrants. Each quadrant will represent one style. Typically, we have one or two styles that will be dominant. That means we prefer to use the strategies for that style to learn best. No one style is better than the others, but our preferred style will dictate how we respond to the others. The first quadrant will be in the upper right-hand corner. The question for this quadrant is Why? A person with this style asks many questions before making a decision or starting a project. This style likes to play “devil’s advocate” in discussions with others. The second quadrant is in the lower right-hand corner. A person with this learning style would ask the question What? People in this quadrant will research information about a topic or decision before beginning the project. For example, if a person in the What? quadrant was purchasing a car, he/she would look up Consumer Reports magazines on cars before looking for a car. Really people in this quadrant just want the facts about a topic before making any judgments. The third quadrant is in the lower left-hand corner of the page. The question for this quadrant is How? A person in this quadrant wants to know how everything works. If a person in this quadrant bought a swing set, he/she would just start putting the swing set together without referring to the instructions that came in the box. If this person purchased a lawn mower, he/she would take it apart and
put it back together so it would run better. There might also be parts left over, but these are obviously not needed. Tim, the Tool man, from Home Improvement would be in this quadrant. The fourth quadrant is in the upper left-hand corner and the question for this one is What if? People in this quadrant want to just get things done. They detest long meetings with endless discussion. Just give them a list of what you want done, and let them do it. They like to be the leader. If they were purchasing a car, they would look at cars in a parking lot or on the road, pick out one they like that will make them look good. Then they would go to the dealership and purchase the car. No kicking the tires or checking under the hood for them. They don’t even care if they test drive it before purchasing. Why is it important to know your style? As I stated in the beginning, your dominant learning style will explain how you process information most efficiently and how you interact with others. For example, if you set up your paper in the four quadrants as I explained, then you can quickly see which groups you complement and which groups get on your last nerve the quickest. The Why? Group is complementary to the What If? Group and the What? Group. This means these groups work well together. If people in these groups are assigned to a project, they will be able to finish it without much dissent. However, the Why? Group and the How? Group are complete opposites. People in these two groups get on each other’s nerves in meetings or when working together. They do not view the world in the same way. People tend to marry someone from their opposite quadrant. People are attracted to people opposite them because the opposite quadrant completes them. The What If? Group is complementary to the Why? Group and the How? Group, but the What If? Group is opposite the What? Group. Finally, remember we all have some of each group in our make-up, but one or two quadrants tend to be dominant. A dominant quadrant will be the way you prefer to process information. Can you change your dominant quadrant? That does not usually happen, but you can improve your other quadrants by intentionally using them more. You can consider the key question for each quadrant when you approach something new. If you want to have a great discussion with a group, just make sure to have at least one of each quadrant represented.
So what is your style? What is your child’s preferred style of learning? At FasTracKids we have a FasTrack Potential Learning Assessment to help determine dominant style. This assessment takes about 15 minutes to administer. Children will be shown several different pictures. Each time the child will select the picture they would prefer to be doing. The results are immediate and interpreted for the parents. If you are interested in having us assess your child, contact Dr. Jennifer Hurd at 979-485-9695 or at the FasTracKids website: Fastrackids.com/collegestation.
