Headlines By James Saunders
Last week we celebrated the end of formal learning for our cohort 11 learners. This week they have already had several exams. I have had the pleasure of talking to a few of them about how things are going and I am pleased to report that they are coping well. It is very easy for us to put all our attention onto this year group at this time of year. However, GCSE exams are just the final part of this journey; they are not the destination and they are not the whole journey. I have never wanted Honywood to be one of those schools where we throw everything at year 11 to catch up for things missed earlier on in the curriculum. My vision for Honywood encompasses all years as each is as important as the other, and if we are to achieve excellence at the end of year 11 we must strive for it throughout. Last Sunday I had the pleasure of visiting our Feel Good Fair in the community building. If you have not yet been I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It was great to see Honywood being able to support the community and raise the profile of ethical trade. I will most definitely be returning next month. As I look towards the second half of the term my sights are firmly aimed at September. Two things that we will be planning for involve the quality of teaching and learning and our expectations. I will be focusing a great deal of our efforts on the classroom so that teaching and learning is always excellent. Just this week I have started to introduce our staff to the Chartered College of Teaching and an evidence-based approach to our development. We are going to become quite outward facing and will be embracing collaboration to enhance our own learning. I will be investing in our staff to develop their own Professional Capital so that they are able to have the maximum impact on our children’s outcomes. The best resource I can provide and highest impact I can have on the outcomes of our learners is through providing each and every learner with an excellent teacher and supporting that teacher to deliver the learning.
As a result of the feedback I received from parents, learners and staff there will be a renewed focus on some of our basic expectations. Over the next few weeks we shall be sharing with you our approach to the dress code for September. This approach has been developed to take into account the feedback you all gave and to ensure consistency across the whole school. I shall provide you with more comprehensive details next week. Learning begins with curiosity; with inquisitiveness; a desire to know more. This week it was great to see that our preschool were igniting learning with their little ones. They had several new arrivals in the form of newly hatched ducklings. Freshly dried off from the incubator, the children had an opportunity to explore these fragile new-born’s. Bringing the world to life is what we are all about at Honywood; it is in such experiences that we will deepen our knowledge understanding of the world in an authentic way. Cohort 11 Leaving Day On Friday the 11th of May, Cohort 11 celebrated their last official day of school before the Exams. Their day ran as normal for the first two learning sessions with learners continuing their revision for their upcoming exams that started on the 14th of May. During Learning Session 3 the learners returned to their Learning Group bases and celebrated as a group giving the Learning Group Leaders an opportunity to say their goodbyes and give final messages. During the lunchtime the learners enjoyed time together as a cohort signing each other’s shirts before the leavers assembly commenced and collecting any pre-ordered hoodies and leavers books. During the assembly, it was the learner’s opportunity to say goodbye to their Learning Group Leaders, presenting to each of them in turn. The learners behaved impeccably throughout the day and presented very well throughout the assembly. It was a memorable experience which I hope they will look back on with fond memories in years to come. Mr Scott Cohort 11 Leader
Congratulations Congratulations to Alice Forster 9KBr who took part in the half Moonwalk on Saturday in aid of breast cancer awareness. She walked the 15.1 miles through the streets of London during the night, accompanied by family and friends to raise money for Breast Cancer. This is a fantastic achievement! Well done Alice. "On Friday 11th May, 8AIs, 8PBl and 8KGu took part in the second installment of the Inter-Learning group challenge. Overall, all Learning Groups played fantastically well however 8KGu won the group with the most supporters and best banners therefore heading into the semi-finals with 8KAr next Friday 25th May. 8AIs came in as the runners-up and 8PBl in third. Well done to everyone who took part last week, it was an exciting game with incredibly close scores. The Netball tournament continues with 8CRs, 8EPe and 8HGi where they will play to win a spot in the semifinals next week. One again the teams worked so well and collaboratively together but 8KGU came out with the win, well done 8KGU! Celebration of Learning Each month, learners who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to learning in and out of school are recognised through the Celebration of Learning Awards. Nominations can be made for circumstances where learners have demonstrated commitment to learning beyond expectation, exceptional progress in the development of one or more of their My Learning Attributes, represented the school or an outside organisation in a regional or national event, or completed a challenge. Congratulations to the learners who have received a Celebration of Learning award in April.

C7 District Football Cohort 7 – District Final Notley 1 Honywood 0 Team: Harri Arkle, Alex Banyard, Louis Byrnes, Josh Farrow, Brodie HenriciFernandez, Luke Holland, Taylor Hughes, Luke Holland,Hadley Quadricci, Ethan Skubich, Alfie Spurgeon, Kieran Wilding. Notley started the game on the attack and goalkeeper Luke Holland had to make a good save to keep the score at 0-0. Honywood then looked the more dangerous with Alex Banyard and Harri Arkle causing the Notley defence problems. The remainder of the first half saw both sides working hard to score the opening goal, but the half ended scoreless. Honywood dominated the second half with the midfield of Ethan Skubich, Hadley Brodie, Henrici Fernandez and Hadley Quadricci creating chances for strikers Alex Banyard and Kieran Widing. There were many attempts to score but the Notley goalkeeper had an excellent game and prevented all Honywoods attempts. Honywood defence, led by man of the match Alfie Spurgeon, blunted the Notley attack, but in the last minute of the game, against the run of play, Notley won through an own goal from a wayward back pass. This was an excellent performance and the Cohort 7 team should be proud to reach the final and should look forward to a successful season next year.
Feel Good Fair Last Sundays Feel Good Fair was another absolute success in bringing people together and focusing on environmental issues. The theme was Give and Take; this is a recycling event where people bring in items from home that they are no longer using and exchange them for something more suitable. For example, I personally bought in some new boots that I had ordered and were too small, baby jigsaws and some jewellery. I took home some Disney jigsaws and Peppa Pig dominoes which my daughter and I have already played with a number of times. I think it is important to see that there are alternatives to sending items to landfill, and often our friends, family and community members can find treasures from our unwanted items. Spirit of Honywood ran the coffee and tea shop this month. We offered teas provided by The Colne Valley Tea Company which is based in Coggeshall and we were able to raise extra funds for the Honywood learners this way. I saw even more Honywood families this month. Thank you to all of you who came along. The more these type of events are supported by our families, the more money we can generate for the learners. Next month is a family fun day. The plan is to have inflatables, virtual reality suites, soft play and plenty for the children. My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to C7 learners that would like help developing their ‘Guide to being a successful Entrepreneur’ magazine. Sessions will also be available for C8s that would like to develop their understanding of multinationals and social enterprises, in order to enhance the depth of their Season 10 investigations. Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on how communication within a business becomes more difficult as it begins to grow and how businesses aim to overcome this issue by adapting its hierarchical structure. Sessions will also be available for C10s who would like to develop their understanding across the ‘Business in the Real World’ and/or ‘Influences on a Business’ topics, as they build towards an all topics assessment in week 36.

English Please spend some time reviewing your most recent learning points in English. What is it you need to do to improve? Do you know how to move forward with your learning? We have many members of the English team available for you to book an MLC appointment with. Your 1:1 or small group MLC session could be focused on improving an aspect of your writing or tackling a particular question on the GCSE language papers. It might be that you’re finding poetry tricky or the study of a particular text is causing you concern. Whatever it is, don’t hesitate to book an MLC today.
