Headlines By James Saunders
After three weeks I am starting to get into the swing of things and find my rhythm. The first two weeks were very much about getting settled in, finding my feet (and sense of direction) and meeting the learners. This week has been about what sits beyond the walls of our school; the wider community. We have welcomed visitors from Japan; we brought the Science Museum to Lyons Hall Primary School; we hosted an excellent evening for Soaring High Montessori about managing screen time for children and, we invited in ex-teachers of our cohort 7 learners for afternoon tea. As well as continuing with my usual round of learning walks, I also had the opportunity to visit Kelvedon St Mary’s Primary Academy and St Peter’s Primary to learn about the rich curriculum that children in our community experience before they reach secondary school. Thank you Kelvedon and St Peter’s; you were a marvellous reminder of just what children are capable of before they reach us. This week however, had a lot riding on it. I have begun to share my vision for the school with staff. Have I captured the zeitgeist? Have I truly listened to what you all shared with me via my survey as well as through the conversations I have already had with so many of you? I did not approach this task lightly. It was important to me that all of your views were contained within the journey we are about to embark upon. It was important to me that I was able to capture what Honywood means to you; to us all. It was important that I was able to forge a set of aspirational goals and a philosophical approach that resonated with our whole community. Only time will tell if I achieved those things. I would like to take this opportunity to share some central aspects of this vision with you. A key part of our vision is to connect communities and build equity and well-being. I think this week has been a great illustration of this; a vision that is based on a belief that our school should operate as the beating heart of the communities it serves. To imbue a sense of challenge and aspiration in all our communities through the development of our core values so that all learners achieve happiness, social equity and economic well-being; now and in the future. We will achieve our aims by continuing to operate using the principles of personalised learning and choice, and through a relentless focus on learning what does and does not work through evidence based practice and an outward facing mindset. Through this learning we will raise our aspirations and constantly challenge ourselves to identify and grow our top and reduce the variance. This will be done through scaffolding and support at all levels. Our mission is to develop independence and resilience in all our learners and staff by creating a sense of community through deep and purposeful relationships and a culture of challenge, aspiration and innovation. Central to this aim is an entitlement to enrichment through a capital enhancing curriculum and the development of social, cultural, knowledge and future capital. We are doing this so that our learners are fully prepared to embrace and positively contribute to society, now and in the future. As a result of our capital enhancing curriculum, they will achieve excellent academic and social outcomes when compared to their peers nationally. I shall be fleshing out this vision over the coming weeks as I work with the school to produce our development plan. I aim to share this with you later in the term. Race for the Line
On a beautiful sunny Tuesday 1st May three teams of rocketeers from C7 made the short journey to the majestic Royal Hospital School near Ipswich to take part in the regional finals of Race For The Line. Our teams were competing against the top teams from schools across Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk and were filled with nerves and excitement. During the morning teams were given a new foam block to redesign and shape based on what they had learnt from the previous round. They got the opportunity to use wire cutter which was fun but a little tricky to keep in line and teams had to be careful not to go into the no cut zone and risk disqualification. Luckily nerves and hands remained steady and the rough shape was created. From here learners smoothed the edges and reduced the weight of their cars using sandpaper. One team managed to craft and fit a spoiler to their car and there was even enough time for some decoration! After a short break for lunch it was out to the tennis courts for the race itself. Honywood were up first and it was a close race between our cars with the girls team edging out the boys. This was swiftly followed by teams from the other 13 schools with some dramatic crashes and some non-starters! Unfortunately none of our cars made the top three so we were unable to progress to the national finals but a great day out was had by all. Our top tips for teams next year are: make your car as light as possible, think about aerodynamics and build your own wheels!! Visitors from Japan
On Tuesday 1st May we hosted a visit for 10 Japanese visitors. These visitors were all teachers and school leaders from Apple Distinguished Schools in Japan. They chose us to visit as we are also an Apple Distinguished School. The focus of their visit was STEAM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics. They were also interested in seeing challenge based learning. The visit was an overwhelming success and our visitors were really impressed with what they saw. They started their visit with a welcome by James Saunders and then an introduction into our pedagogy and use of technology in our learning design, kindly led by Paula Downes. Ena Watts 7RPh and Mondo Watts 8HGi did a fantastic job of interpreting and showing a group of our visitors around. Aisling Pellow 7RPh, Maisie Waite 9KBr and Millie Gillard 9KBr also did great jobs as tour guides for the visit. Once the group had observed learning in action they then had an opportunity for a question and answer session with members of our staff Digital Learning team.
Jack Petchey April - 2018 Eloise Dockerty 11AMi Eloise has been awarded the Jack Petchey prize for her commitment to fundraising in Scouting and her work with Beavers and Scouts. She single-handedly organises many fundraising events on top of juggling her many interests outside of school.
May - 2018 Emmelene Watts 9SLo Emmelene has been awarded the Jack Petchey Award for her continued support for the Feel Good Fair, an ethical event run by the school once a month. Emmelene turns up each month, starting early on a Sunday morning with enthusiasm and care and helps collect donations, and to sell raffle tickets to raise money for the school.
Primary Afternoon Tea
On Wednesday 2nd May, learners in Cohort 7 hosted an afternoon tea for some of their primary school teachers. The learners worked in a team to plan all aspects of the event, which included baking an array of tasty and beautiful cakes. Learners spent the afternoon with the primary teachers showcasing their learning during their first year at Honywood, and demonstrating how far they are come since beginning at secondary school. Thank you to all the primary staff who joined us for the afternoon.
C8 Sculptures in Art Cohort 8 welcomed parents into the art studio this week for their sculpture exhibition. Learners have used artists Claes Oldenburg and Sarah Graham to influence their tea party themed sculptures. Spending weeks drawing and studying subject matter before planning and testing construction techniques and making the final sculpture. A fantastic effort by all learners involved and huge thanks to all who visited the exhibition!

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions. MLCs this week are available to C7 learners that would like to develop their understanding of what the key differences are between sole traders, partnerships and franchises. Sessions will also be available for C8s that would like help developing their investigation into Social Enterprises. Business Studies. MLCs this week will be focused on the ‘Motivation and Retention’ and ‘hierarchical structures’, as C9 learners continue to work through the ‘Human Resources’ unit and start their Case Study 3 investigation. MFL Cohort 7, has your trip to Saint Omer inspired you to become more confident in speaking a foreign language? If so, book an MLC for speaking practice with an MFL teacher! English Please spend some time reviewing your most recent learning points in English. What is it you need to do to improve? Do you know how to move forward with your learning? We have many members of the English team available for you to book an MLC appointment with. Your 1:1 or small group MLC session could be focused on improving an aspect of your writing or tackling a particular question on the GCSE language papers. It might be that you’re finding poetry tricky or the study of a particular text is causing you concern. Whatever it is, don’t hesitate to book an MLC today.
