Exciting News I am delighted to announce that for the second time we have been recognised as an Apple Distinguished School. As you all know, Apple is one of the worlds’ leading businesses; you may not be quite so aware of the company’s commitment to education. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. They showcase innovative use of technology in learning, teaching and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment. Apple works with these schools to spread educational innovation across the world in the same way that its products bring innovation to our daily lives. To gain this designation we had to produce substantial evidence of the innovative learning and teaching that takes place every day at our school. As you know, we encourage youngsters to be curious in their learning, fostering an interest in learning for life as they develop key attributes that will ultimately support their life-long success and happiness. The advantages of using an iPad in our learning model is that it provides learners with opportunities for independence, using the technology to further their learning, enabling research, the sharing of ideas and supporting creativity much like the method of working we see in the business world today. Our selection as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages learners and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Throughout the last seven years, as we’ve been developing a personalised approach to education, we have looked to use developing technologies wherever they have allowed us to make learning more personal. We can be very proud that a company of the status of Apple has been willing to acknowledge the success that we’ve had both in the early phase of introducing our new approach to learning (we were first designated as an Apple Distinguished School 2012) and this year as that model has become so much more embedded in the way we work. Through being members of the programme once again, we will gain access to some of the most innovative practice currently taking place across the globe, all of which we’ll learn from to ensure that the education we offer our youngsters is ever more closely tailored to their personal needs. School Production Can I remind everyone that on the evenings of Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th December our youngsters will be performing ‘School of Rock’. Tickets went on sale last week via our learner reception (£6 for adults £4 for children); the show commences each evening at 7pm, with refreshments available at the interval. Can I urge everyone to come along and support our young people and enjoy the brilliant production they are putting on for us all. Variety Show / End of Term Arrangements We will end this term on Wednesday December 20th with a celebration of our youngsters’ performing arts skills in our annual Variety Show led by our Expressive Arts Team. Learners auditioned for the show over
the last two days and I expect that the quality will once again be very high, so we can all look forward to a great time together to send us on our way to our Christmas break. The arrangements for the last day of term will, therefore, be as follows: 8.45 - Registration 8.55 - Learning Session 1 9.45 - Learning Session 2 10.35 - Break 10.50 - Learning Session 4 11.40 - Learning Session 3 12.00 - All learners to large Sports Hall 12.55 - All learners to Learning Group rooms for registration 1.10 - Learners dismissed Buses will be organised to collect learners at 1:10. Congratulations To Max Wooldridge (8KGu) who was awarded Highly Commended in a presentation held at the University of Essex at Chelmsford in the Inspirational Youth Category of the Pride of Essex Awards. As well as an impressive certificate, Max won £250 for his commitment to dancing and the titles and trophies he has won over the years; a fantastic achievement! To Amy Banks (9TGr), Joshua Carter (9KCo), William Dubbini (9CHa), Finlay Kennedy (8PBl) and Oliver Wrench (9AMc) all of whom represented the school at a recent Boccia tournament where they finished fifth out of twenty five teams. Thanks To Jonny Adams (8DCa), Rachel Ball (8DCa), Jude Battersby (8APr), Travis Beddoes (8KEg), Lucas Bennett (8KAr), Kayleigh Benson (8AIs), Lily Blute (8PBl), Isabella Brewer (8DCa), Summer Campbell (8KEg), Regan Camps (8CRs), Tallulah Skeys (8DCa) and Cara Taylor (8KAr) for their support with interviews which took place at the school this week.

Staff Learning Application to Transfer - Staff Learning Conference Staff learning here at Honywood follows the same approach to the learner model in that there are distinct approaches; ignition, study and showcase. Our ignition for the first day of our conference on Friday was understanding how we all learn. We explored the process of the different stages we experience when we are learning something new. We have identified these five phases as the following: Awareness - this is where we have a surface level awareness and know something exists. Appreciation - this is where we appreciate action and consequence and are able to take knowledge and recognise it has purpose or value. Depth of Understanding is where through analysing what we know and through reflection we begin to understand when, where and why the learning has value. Application - this is where we evaluate the process we have been through and confidently apply this new level of understanding. Transfer - this is the phase where we are able to think independently about what we have learnt and consequently can transfer this new learning from one subject to another in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts. Throughout both Friday and Saturday colleagues led seven different workshops, the themes for these workshops were: • • • • • • •
How we can develop our use of the 8 My Learning Attributes. How we can become even more effective in our use of questioning. How we can help youngsters with the transition from Cohort 8 and into Cohort 9 with a focus on how to study. How we can develop the role of Learning Group Leader. How we can ensure that the guidance we give youngsters motivates them to review their learning. How we can improve the way we use the software in school to ensure that we can become better at analysing learning. How the work we are doing in the My Learning Hub is promoting wellbeing and social understanding.
On Monday and Tuesday colleagues engaged in study where they reflected on what they had learnt at the conference and then in their different teams they considered what they needed to apply in order to move the learning forward. It was a really productive three and a half days and there was a real ‘learning buzz’ as colleagues collaborated, communicated and considered the ways we can make Honywood an even better school. Cohort 7 Showcasing
C8 Showcasing - Part of our Learning Journey Cohort 8 have had their second showcasing opportunity this year, which has given them and their teachers the opportunity to REFLECT on their LEARNING JOURNEYS at Honywood and in doing so bringing into focus the PROCESS of their learning rather than just considering a finished piece. Showcasing is supported by the framework questions;
Showcases are an authentic opportunity to demonstrate newly acquired skills and accomplishments and to start a dialogue between the learner and the teacher that is very specific to the learner’s needs. The examples here are just a few of the really great ones that Cohort 8 have produced and uploaded to their My Learning Journey pages on il@h. In doing they have initiated the communication that will take place between them and their teacher. Getting feedback is very important but also it is equally important to be able to act on the feedback and demonstrate how you have achieved this. Reflecting on why and how you were successful is incredibly useful.
Cohort 7 Technology Cohort 7 Technology - Race for the Line Model Rocket Car Competition Great Britain - Season 3 We are one of 420 Secondary Schools that have entered our entire Cohort 7 into this competition. Teams will design, build and race Micro:bit enabled model rocket cars up 70 mph across the playground of their school. Race days will be run by Rocketeer teams from our joint forces programme partners, the RAF, ARMY and NAVY in the Spring term 2018. 40 Forces bases nationwide will host regional finals in late April and early May 2018, and the top 40 teams from the 18,000 competing nationally will be invited to the national finals at RAF Wittering in June 2018. My Learning Hub Seeking inspiration from the autumn colours around us, the learners from MLH have been creating their own autumn scenes using leaves. Well done everyone.
Food Bank Collection Food Bank collection! 9KBr are collecting for the Colchester Foodbank. More than 8 million people in Britain live in households that struggle to put enough food on the table, with over half regularly going a whole day without eating. 9KBr are inviting learners to bring in their donation to HU4 before the 15th December. Donations of canned and dried food types are welcome, but please make sure they have at least two months left on their best by date! Please see the leaflet on our Facebook for guidance on the type of donations. Thank you!
Lunchtime Activities
All of our subject teams run activities after school, but also during lunchtimes! On Thursday lunchtimes, the Computer Science Club meet. Learners from Cohort 7 and Cohort 9 collaborate and share knowledge as they work in MicroBits, Python programming language and Scratch. See Mrs Lay if you would like to come along.

Netball Reports Team: Hannah Read, Lauren Evans, Emily Pyatt, Florence Ramsey, Poppy Thacker, Erin Mills, Ashtyn Newley, Ellie Houghton and Zoe Hodgkins. Our Cohort 8 Netball team took part in the District Competition at HRS on Tuesday 21st November. They had a shaky start losing their first two games by only one goal in each, but had a fantastic win against Ramsey. We had a couple of new players join the team who fit in really well and played some great netball, so well done. A big thank you for those who got the learners to school on a non-pupil day to participate, and who also picked them up after. It is much appreciated as the girls really enjoy playing together. Miss Thomas Team: Kate Southgate, Georgia Potter, Izzy Sigourney, Lauren EvansPritchard, Alice Rissen, Sadie Cornish, Jess Neary, Hannah Read, Megan Stoney and Lara English Our U14 Netball team played in the first round of the Essex Cup - Plate competition on Wednesday 22nd November against Tendring Technology College. They had to win the game to go through to round 2. It was an extremely windy afternoon so they had a lot to contend with! It was a close game for the first half of the match with a lot of shots being missed due to the weather, but the girls worked hard and played great as a team by supporting and encouraging each other. Tendring had some tall and experienced players, but the girls did not let that faze them. They really got into their stride come the second half and ended up winning the game 15-8! They really deserved the good win and are through to round two. Well done girls, very proud of you all. Miss Thomas

Wednesday 22nd November after school the Cohort 7 Netball girls attended their district tournament at HRS. They braved the weather conditions and played really well as a team against all of their opponents. The teams they were up against were Ramsey, HRS, Notley High, Forest hall, and Tabor. The girls drew two games, won a game and unfortunately lost two games. They played extremely well and did fight for every ball at every opportunity. I would like to thank Erin Whitter for acting as captain for the matches and all the girls for they continued dedication to Netball club. My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to Cohort 7 and Cohort 8 learners that would like some extra help and advice on how best to present their project work and to develop the depth and detail of their written explanations. ‘How to construct an effective business pitch’ is also available, as learners look towards to their showcase weeks. Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on revising for either the Cohort 11 mock exams or the Cohort 10 Influences on a Business end of unit assessment. Going through aspects of the course that you’re unsure of, creating useful and lasting revision resources and practising applying your knowledge across the various forms of GCSE questions will all be available. MFL Cohort 11, with your Mocks for French and Spanish approaching, why not book an MLC with an MFL teacher today and maximise your MFL revision? Maths - Are you curious about a specific Maths topic that you would like to learn more about? - Do you want to improve your problem solving skills and become a more capable Mathematician? - Or, do you want to boost your confidence in Maths?

His sister Emily nominated him for his commitment to dancing and the titles and trophies he has won over the years. He has been a great ambassador for his art, and whilst he has sometimes come across unsupportive comments from others in the past, he has never let this stop him wanting to continue with dance or to aim high. Along with the certificate, he was also given a cheque for £250. Well done Max!
