As it is the last Gazette of the term I shall keep things short so you can get on with starting your plans for the summer. I hope that over the term I have been able to convey to you a vision for us to work toward. I hope that you feel that your views have helped to shape the direction of the school. I hope that you can see that learning is at the heart of the journey we are embarking on and I hope that you are as excited as me about what lies ahead; it won’t be easy but it will be rewarding in the long run. I think that working in a school is the best job in the world but, at times, the most draining job in the world; it is a job that is hard and only those that do it really know how hard - that includes the learners too. I am sure our learners are all mentally drained and ready for their well-deserved break. Nonetheless, they should enter the break feeling satisfied that they have lived up to and gone beyond expectation. I have enjoyed meeting our learners this term; each engagement with them has been a demonstration of our core values. I would like to thank the whole of the Honywood community for the part you have played in supporting our learners - our children, to grow and become happy and successful. Over the last term, thirteen weeks or sixty-five days I have felt surprised, inspired, elated and entertained by the diverse range of personalities we serve; the fantastic staff that serve them, and the dedicated parents that support us. Personally I would like to thank you all for the support you have provided over this term. I can’t wait until next term. Yesterday we finished the term off with the C9 fete. It was the perfect way to end the term. Sunshine, sweets, waffles, home cooking, and soak the teacher formed the perfect backdrop to this happy occasion. As I wandered round the stalls talking to each of the
C9’s about their ideas I was inspired by the sense of community. And that was what brought me here in the first place - community. Thank you Honywood community. I wish you a lovely summer. Dof E The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award can present youngsters with the opportunity to take part in some unique and exciting things. Monday 16th July 2018 was one of those occasions! HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, is completing a charity challenge of playing at all of the ‘Real Tennis’ courts around the world. Not only raising the profile of the game and the Duke of Edinburgh’s award but also giving youngsters the chance to try their hand at a not-so-new sport (Real Tennis – one of several games sometimes called “the sport of kings” – is the original racquet sport from which the modern game of tennis is derived.) On Monday 16th July, some of our learners, past and present, had the chance to play with and against HRH during a day at Prested Hall, Feering. The day was organised by the current men’s and women’s world champions Rob & Clare Fahey who are based at Prested Hall. The current C10 DofE participants were fortunate to spend the whole day at the event and conducted themselves with great respect and maturity, when chatting with HRH. First on court was Jake Mead (C9) followed by Edward Wilson & Amy Pye (learners who left last year) are currently members of Prested Hall Real Tennis club and demonstrated their proficiency during a 2hr game against HRH, and won! In addition, Hannah Goodey (who also left Honywood last year) has just completed her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, was congratulated by The Earl of Wessex on her achievement and will receive her award at Buckingham Palace in due course. C5 Taster Day Aliens Invade Honywood……. Could we live alongside aliens if they were to find their way to Earth? What evidence do we have that could suggest aliens have already visited? Does the anatomy of an alien allow them to survive in our environment and climate? Would it be possible for us to communicate with them? Over the past two weeks we have welcomed Year 5 learners from Beckers Green, Colne Engaine, Earls Colne, Feering, Flitch Green, Great Bradfords, John Bunyan, Little Garth, Lyons Hall, Silver End, St Andrew’s, St Margaret’s, St Michaels, St Peters and White Court Primary/Junior Schools, to explore and evaluate the feasibility of aliens living alongside us. Across a two-day programme of subject-based learning sessions, learners explored the structure of a real heart(!), challenged aliens to run obstacle courses that they designed themselves, designed food products that might appeal to Aliens and packaged them appropriately, explored the use of language as a means of communication, reported on the news of the alien invasion, explored previous extraterrestrial sightings and investigated where the aliens may have travelled from within the solar system. The Year 5 learners had a taste of the learning style we adopt at Honywood, given choice about how they approached their tasks, being allowed to make their own decisions and making use of the support from Honywood staff and our wonderful Cohort 9 Ambassadors as and when they needed it. C9 Fete
Congratulations to all of Cohort 9 for their tremendous efforts in running their Fete on Thursday 19th July. The sun was shining causing the ice lolly stall to sell out, and the water sponge stall to have extra volunteers! The last few days of the summer term are always the hardest, but the Cohort were motivated and keen to impress and put on a fantastic event for the rest of the school. Work Experience Award Employer reports on our learners were brilliant and it was difficult to choose a winner. This year the Award went to two people: EMMA BOLAND AND MEGAN EVANS PATIENT SERVICES AT MID ESSEX HOSPITAL SERVICES NHS TRUST Both Emma and Megan demonstrated the attributes any employer would want to see of an employee. They: • Planned ahead and considered their options relating to their career aspirations; they had an idea what they wanted to do in the future and were determined to secure a placement linked to these aspirations. • They demonstrated tenacity in securing placements linked to their aspirations. • They attended every day, were punctual and reliable. • They set themselves high standards and were willing to go the extra mile. • They asked relevant questions and persisted, even when they found a task difficult and challenging. • They received an excellent employer report “The placement coincided with the department being short of staff but both girls were quick to grasp the situation with neither being phased nor appearing uncomfortable. They used their initiative, were polite and professional and sought clarification when needed. They are true ambassadors of Honywood School” Megan and Emma have developed their self-confidence and now have a better idea of the different careers within Medicine” Well Done Emma and Megan – You have each won £15 worth of Smiths vouchers!

Taster Day
Celebratory Event and Taster Day 13th July 2018 On Friday 13th July 2018 15 Cohort 10 learners from Honywood School (along with 2 other schools in the area) were invited to celebrate the new lecture theatre and Sixth Form block at Colchester County High School for Girls. The new block is very modern and learners were treated to 4 lectures: English “Virgins or Whores” exploring the treatment of women in literature and the arts from the 14th century onwards; Philosophy & Ethics “Is Capital Punishment right?”; History looking at the Second World War especially Dunkirk and Pointe Du Hoc where Rangers scaled the 100ft cliffs; and finally Psychology looking at “Ethics”. Really interesting subjects and Honywood learners stood up to the challenge by asking incisive questions. We were also treated to some tasty cake!! A really thought provoking day and a useful insight for those learners who aspire to go to Grammar School! Mrs Wiggins

Should your child need to be excused PE for medical reasons then please provide a letter explaining the problem. Learners will be expected to bring their kit so that they can still participate in the learning session as a coach or official where fitness allows.

SPORT FOR CONFIDENCE LAUNCHES INCLUSIVE SUMMER ACTIVITY CAMP AT VENUES ACROSS ESSEX
Social enterprise, Sport for Confidence, has teamed up with the Action for Children charity via Essex Short Breaks to offer inclusive sporting opportunities for young people this summer. Sessions will run at four leisure centres across Essex and will provide opportunities for young people aged 0-25years to take part in a range of fully adaptive, accessible sporting activities including multi sports, dodgeball, boccia and New Age Kurling. Every session will be delivered by a health professional and a sports coach to ensure the needs of each individual are catered for. Carers and siblings are also very welcome to attend and get involved. Lyndsey Barrett, Occupational Therapist and Founder at Sport for Confidence, says: “Sport and physical activity has so much to offer everyone. This summer there is no reason why anybody should miss out on all the fun. Our sessions are fully inclusive and focused on fun and laughter. As well as learning some new skills, there are also opportunities to meet new people and enjoy the social side of sport.” Sessions begin week commencing July 23 and run for six weeks at the following venues: • Basildon Sporting Village, Friday 1.30-3.30pm • Witham Leisure Centre, Monday 1.30-3.30pm • Hadleigh Park, Monday 1.30pm – 3.00pm • Waterside Farm Leisure Centre, Canvey Island
