Headlines By James Saunders
My theme for this week is community and our core aim of connecting communities. It filled me with an immense sense of pride in both our learners as I basked in the multitude of creative endeavours on offer last night. I think I have mentioned to many of you my love of the Arts and all things creative. The Arts tend to naturally lean toward showcasing; there is always a tangible end product: a song; a dance; a play; a painting; a sculpture or a designed product. The showcasing was exemplary last night as learners from all parts of the school came together to display the results of their progress in learning, however, through self-expression, their confidence and development as individuals shone through as the star of the show and reminded of our responsibility to the whole child. As we approach the end of what has surely been a busy and a very full term it is great to see our learners remaining so dedicated and enthusiastic and our community so buoyant and embracing of their talents. I also had the pleasure of watching the Learner to Learner presentations. It was inspiring to see our learners standing together with peers from Alec Hunter Academy and a range of local primary schools; a true example of communities coming together. As momentum builds for week 37, I imagine that many of our learners will be excited about the enrichment opportunities they will be taking part in. Whether it is the Danbury or Portsmouth residentials, the visits to Universities, honing work skills as reporters or supporting our local primary schools as PE coaches, I wish them the best of luck next week. As they connect to communities across the country. I know that memories will be forged in our learners that will last them a lifetime. Finally, please come along to our Feel Good Fair this Sunday. It promises to be another fun filled family day to bring our communities together. I look forward to seeing you there. District Sports
On Tuesday 19th June we took 77 learners over to Tabor Academy to compete against 11 other schools in the annual District Athletics Competition. The learners were excellent ambassadors for the school with impeccable behaviour throughout the day and all giving 100% effort in their events. The older learners helped the younger less experienced learners and there was a real sense of support and care between them over the day. The school finished 5th overall behind much bigger schools in the area and the junior boys team (C8 & 9) came 3rd in their category. A big well done to all involved and thank you those parents who came to show their support. A huge thank you to Mr Walters, Mr Scott, Mrs Jones, Miss Thomas and Mrs Frogley for helping with the smooth running of the day!

Summer Arts Evening
On Thursday 21st June, we held our annual Summer Arts Festival. This was the fourth time we had organised the event in a festival style format, where the audience could float between two different performance areas and it worked so well. The whole night showcased examples of learning that are on offer at Honywood across dance, drama, music, art, design & technology. There were many learners from each of the cohorts involved, all of whom gave such high quality performances. It was fantastic to see learners from every cohort involved in the evening, whether they were performing or helping backstage. They had spent many hours rehearsing and perfecting their performances, including a full day before the concert in order to provide the excellent entertainment many of you saw. Many thanks to the learners and staff who helped backstage, without them it wouldn’t have run so smoothly. A particular thank you to our former-learners Mikey Buick, Sophie Knights and Kahn Pennington-Partridge who have given up their time to support us. Congratulations to everyone who took part; you all showed off your skills superbly and you worked so hard towards the performances, making many teachers and parents proud. Thanks to all that came to watch the concert, we hope you enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing you at our next performance. Wishing you a wonderful Summer. The Expressive Arts Team.
Learner 2 Learner Project Learner to learner Project is where learners from various schools in the area have the opportunity to visit different Primary and Secondary schools over the year in order for them to research how different schools learn. Mrs Stoneman launched the project back in September at Honywood and since then we have visited John Ray Juniors, John Bunyan and Alec Hunter. We came back to Honywood on Tuesday 19th June to present our research and findings to over 40 students, our headteachers and our teachers. The schools were divided into seven groups with a representative from each school. Each group had to decide on a focus question and used this to channel their research when visiting each school. For example: ‘How do learners make progress’? And’ what encourages learners to learn?’ This project helped Learners to boost their own confidence, as well as implement ideas into their own schools. It was an enjoyable experience where many learners developed the skills such as communication and confidence- and many left making new friends! Mrs Stoneman

Business Board Games Enterprise and Solutions – Season 10: Building My Business Board Game The final Season of Enterprise & Solutions for the C8s has culminated in learners being challenged to research, design and develop a board game that not only functions as any marketable board game should, but to also showcase the depth of the business knowledge that they have developed across the last 2 years of the course. After taking the time to conduct some secondary research of existing games, and evaluating the pros and cons of these competitors, learners then moved on to developing their own concepts and designs. It was also really encouraging to see that many learners also displayed the initiative to conduct some primary research as well, in the form of a quick consumer survey, so that they would be able to create designs that would appeal further to their chosen target market. In their final session, learners had the opportunity for other members of the class play their board game, in order to see how well their game actually functioned in practice, how engaging and fun it was for participants and depth of contextual business knowledge it contained. Peer feedback was provided by all that played, which then enabled learners to spend the final portion of the session reflecting on their board game and the feedback provided, so they could complete an honest assessment and evaluation of the level that they had attained across the challenges 3 assessment points – ‘Knowledge & Understanding’, ‘Playability’ and ‘Creativity & USP’. This also provided an opportunity for learners to identify what they would need to change in order to improve the overall game in line with these assessment points. The application, effort and creativity displayed by all was fantastic, and it was outstanding to see how constructively and consistently learners were able to provide, listen to and acted upon each other’s feedback. It really was a great way to sign off their time studying Enterprise and Solutions – well done to all and I hope that the knowledge and skills you’ve developed in ES across the last 2 years prove useful to you in the future. At the weekend, twenty two C10 Learners departed Honywood School at 8.15am to travel to Rendlesham for their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award expedition. During Saturday, in groups of 6, all Learners successfully navigated and walked 20 KM through pip farms, countryside, forests and woodland to arrive back to the base camp in Rendlesham Forest. They were then assessed on their camp-craft skills to cook a range of dinners from Chicken Korma, pasta, chocolate puddings and many more choices. The weather was perfect, which allowed for a decent nights sleep (apart from staff members snoring!!!) Whilst the sun was rising, Learners awoke early to collapse and pack away their tents to enjoy a cooked breakfast in the sunshine. A further challenge of navigation and walking 12 kilometres was successfully achieved by all the Learners, arriving safely back to the check point base. A fantastic accomplishment for all twenty two learners. It was a pleasure to spend the weekend with such positive and dedicated learners whose resilience to adversity was challenged and conquered - well done! Mrs S Palmer & Mr M Ramsay
Celebration of Learning Each month, learners who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to learning in and out of school are recognised through the Celebration of Learning Awards. Nominations can be made for circumstances where learners have demonstrated commitment to learning beyond expectation, exceptional progress in the development of one or more of their My Learning Attributes, represented the school or an outside organisation in a regional or national event, or completed a challenge. Congratulations to the learners who have received a Celebration of Learning award in May. Design Technology Technician (39 weeks, up to 25 hours per week £8,671 - £9,209 p.a.)
To assist teaching staff in providing learners with a relevant and effective Design & Technology experience and ensure high levels of achievement. Having a quality set of creative and technical skills will be required to ensure that learners’ visions for their development in Technology are realised. 1)
We require an exceptional person who can join us to work closely with learners and teachers within our Technology Team preparing materials, maintaining equipment and supporting young people in their learning.

To provide support to teaching staff, particularly in the preparation and cleaning/clearing of learning session materials. To ensure the efficient preparation and organisation of learning materials as required. To support where applicable teaching staff and learners during learning sessions. Maintain and repair the equipment and tools in the workshop and classroom areas, keeping all classrooms organised and free from hazards. Braintree foodbank are currently experiencing severe shortages of certain items in their warehouse. As of today the warehouse is either short of, or by the end of packing today will be out of: Cartons of Long Life Milk Hot Meat snacks (e.g. hotdogs, tinned spaghetti bolognaise, beans with sausages, macaroni cheese etc.) Tinned Vegetables Tins of cold meat Tinned spaghetti Sponge puddings Tinned Rice Pudding Braintree foodbank saw almost 17% more clients in 2017/18 compared to the previous year. Since the start of the financial year on 1st April the centres have continued to be very busy. In April and May we saw almost twice as many clients as in 2017, the need continues to grow. We are collecting items for the food bank at Honywood, please give anything you can to your learner to deliver to learner reception. Items must have 6 months life left in them. The items above are an urgent need but they always need items such as: Cereal Bars Chocolate covered biscuits (eg KitKat, Penguins) Cereal (small packets only)* Packet Custard Tea Bags (40s only please)* Rice (500g only please)* Longlife Fruit Juice Instant Mash Shower Gel Antiperspirant/Deodorant We have a plentiful supply of Baked Beans so do not need this at the moment.

My Learning Choices Enterprise & Solutions MLCs this week are available to C7 learners that would like any help structuring or conducting their investigation into internationally successful entrepreneurs. Sessions will also be available for C8s that would like to help improving their Business Board Games, so that they can build in as much business knowledge in to their designs as possible.

Business Studies MLCs this week will be focused on helping C9s revise the C9 Assessment Week. This could include going over aspects of the ‘Marketing’, ‘Influences on a Business’ and/or ‘Human Resources’ units, or developing the structure of answers to 4, 6 and 9 mark questions. Sessions will also be available for c10s who would like help preparing for their final practice paper of the year, which they’ll be sitting in week 40. English Please spend some time reviewing your most recent learning points in English. What is it you need to do to improve? Do you know how to move forward with your learning? We have many members of the English team available for you to book an MLC appointment with. Your 1:1 or small group MLC session could be focused on improving an aspect of your writing or tackling a particular question on the GCSE language papers. It might be that you’re finding poetry tricky or the study of a particular text is causing you concern. Whatever it is, don’t hesitate to book an MLC today.
