Last night I was once again reminded of the importance that the arts and creativity play in providing a broad and well rounded curriculum when I attended the final performance of Bugsy Malone, our school production. What I saw was a real representation of what education and school is about. There was the discipline of having to learn lines, dances, musical arrangements and staging, as well as the whole script - all the knowledge stuff. There was the artistry of the set and costume design, the musical arrangements, the delivery of lines and movement around the stage - the creative stuff. And then there was the teamwork. Different groups worked together to execute the show: the technical crew, the musicians and the performers. Over the last term our learners have been using deliberate practise and repetition to support them to learn their lines and steps etc. However, this was only a small part of the final production. It was only when they brought everything together. When they worked as a team and applied creativity to what they had learnt that they were able to put their own individual stamps onto the performance. That is what made it unique. A grounding in the Arts is a vital part of any young persons education and I am pleased that they are highly valued at Honywood. The Arts create curious, creative and inquisitive learners. Learners that are resilient, understand commitment and hard work and, are happy in their learning journey.
There are many opportunities to engage with the Arts at Honywood and I would encourage everyone to look for opportunities such as the school production to support them to develop into well rounded, happy and successful learners.
