BRIEFS Safe at Home Class Offered
The Grundy County Health Department will hold a Safe at Home Class on Tuesday, June 13 from 9:00-10:30 am at the GCHD office at 1716 Lincoln St. in Trenton. Safe at Home is a 90-minute program designed for students in grades 4-6 to prepare them to be safe when they are home alone for short periods of time. Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Class fee is $5 per person and a light snack is included. The class is open to girls or boys in grades four through six. Persons may register online at www.grundycountyhealth.org/safe-sitter. Safe Sitter is designed to prepare students in grades six through eight to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The course is led by certified instructors and includes practice of rescue skills like CPR and choking rescue. Class fee is $20 per person and lunch is included. WMH, HMC and Saint Luke’s Health System Invest in NCMC During an event recently held at The Gardens at Hedrick Medical Center, Steve Schieber, CEO of Saint Luke’s Critical Access Region, announced support for the “Transforming Lives, Empowering People” major gifts campaign with a check presented to North Central Missouri College President Dr. Lenny Klaver. The Transforming Lives Garden Social hosted by Hedrick Medical Center and Wright Memorial Hospital brought medical professionals, community members, and NCMC representatives together to learn more about the campaign and highlight the importance of the working relationship between the institutions. Schieber welcomed friends and expressed the significance of NCMC, not only to the hospital, but to the region. “North Central Missouri College is vital to our region, and that is espe-
cially true for both Hedrick and Wright Memorial,” said Schieber. “A large percentage of our nursing staff, as well as several other employees at our two hospitals, graduated from NCMC. We have a great partnership, and we only hope to grow that partnership in the years to come. We’re honored to be a part of their new campaign and wish them much success throughout this endeavor.” Saint Luke’s Health System includes 14 hospitals and campuses across the Kansas City region, home care and hospice, behavioral health care, dozens of physician practices, a life care senior living community, and more. Demolition on the North Central Missouri College campus continues as the Barnes Building, Freeman Building and former Bookstore building are all coming down. This will create space to extend the parking lot next to it with some area to seed for additional green space to be used in the future for development and growth. NCMC’s Chief of Staff, Kristi Harris, said “We are excited about the continual revitalization we bring to downtown Trenton and look forward to utilizing all of our new spaces for future campus expansion.”
11th Annual Cops ‘N Bobbers Fishing Event Held With near perfect weather on Saturday, June 3, the Trenton Police Department hosted 56 local children at the 11th Annual Cops ‘N Bobbers fishing event. Numerous fish were caught as area kids spent the morning fishing with the Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders. After fishing with equipment provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation at the NCMC Barton Farm Campus pond, the youth were treated to lunch by CFM Insurance. The event’s newest sponsor, Quail Forever, provided additional activities and prizes for the participants. Event Co-Sponsors for the event were North Central Missouri College, the Missouri Department of Conservation, CFM Insurance and Quail Forever. Community Partners, along with those who donated prizes for each of the kids registered for the event, include American Sportsman Rod & Gun; Hy-Vee Food Store; PAR Broadcast Group; Trenton Republican-Times; Henry Rifles; Zebco; BTC Area Youth Benefit Corporation; St. Joseph Mustangs; Des Moines Menace; Iowa Cubs; Kansas City Monarchs; Casey’s General Store; Midway USA and 365, LLC Digital Billboards. Fireworks Donations Sought A fireworks display is planned in Trenton on Monday, July 3 to celebrate the Independence Day holiday. A committee of local residents, chaired by Cole Soptic, is currently seeking donations to help pay for the event. It is hoped that around $5,000 can be raised to pay for the show, with fireworks to be shot off from an area near the Rock Barn at dusk on July 3. Individuals, businesses and organizations wanting to make a contribution can do so by leaving their donation at the Trenton Area Chamber of Commerce office, Farmers State Bank, Trenton Abstract and Title or the law office of Tara Walker. Donations can also be mailed to the Chamber at PO Box 233, Trenton, MO 64683. Checks should have “fireworks” written in the notation line.
