City Council Discusses Sidewalks, Wages The Trenton City Council met in open session Monday, November 27, 2023 at 7 p.m. at City Hall. In attendance were Mayor Jackie Soptic; Council Members William Fisher, Glenn Briggs, Calvin Brown, Marvin Humphreys, Timothy Meinecke, David Mlika and John Dolan; City Attorney Tara Walker; City Administrator/Utilities Director Ron Urton; and City Clerk Cindy Simpson. Absent was Councilmember Duane Urich. The meeting started with the minutes from the November 13 meeting being approved. The council approved to pay all duly obligated bills. The council members then went over reports from around the city. The Finance committee decided to table their discussion
until the Dec. 7. The Utility committee went over department reports, finances, projects, and phase two of the water main project. The Nuisance board declared that the former Lake View property was removed and the contract for 416 West 13th is on hold till the contract can be signed. Mayor Soptic discussed her time spent with Trenton High School seniors and the job opportunities the city has. Next on the agenda was the ordinances and resolutions portion of the meeting. First up was Bill No. 55 which called for an ordinance authorizing, ordering, and approving a general election to be held in Trenton on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 for the purpose of electing one city councilman from each of the four wards of the city for a regular term of two

years designating the time of holding said election: and providing for the time for filing of certificates of nomination. The declaration of candidates for nomination for said offices shall be filed with the City Clerk no sooner than December 5, 2023, and no later than December 26, 2023. All city council members voted yes. Bill No. 56 stated an ordinance of the city approving an agreement between the city and Tyler Technologies for the ERP pro 10 Migration. The contract includes Annual Software and Migration services, for a total of $59,548. All council members voted yes to approve the bill. Bill No. 57 stated that an ordinance be put in place approving a transportation enhancement funds pro[See Council, Page 2]
Delores Kuttler Receives Missouri Community College Award of Distinction Delores and the late John Kuttler of Trenton were recently recognized by the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) for their outstanding support of Missouri Community Colleges. Delores was present to receive the 2023 Award of Distinction at the statewide MCCA convention held in Kansas City. This is one of the highest awards given to an individual who goes above and beyond to support Missouri community colleges. John served as a member of the Trenton R-9 and Trenton Junior College Board of Education just prior to the separation from the R-9 District and was very instrumental in the planning and construction of Hoffman Hall on the NCMC Campus. Mrs. Kuttler is an NCMC alum and a former art instructor for the R-9 District and the College. In 2011, John and Delores donated the largest gift in the history of the institution, a 312-acre farm in Buchanan County. The Kuttler Animal Science Complex at the NCMC Elizabeth & Arthur Barton Farm Campus provides a hands-on classroom for instruction in animal science. [See Kuttler, Page 3]

Due to a scheduling conflict, the NCMC men’s basketball game with Central Methodist University JV on Thursday, November 30 has been postponed. A makeup date is not yet available but will occur sometime after the new year.

North Central Missouri College Upward Bound students recently participated in community service at their November Extreme Saturday event. During this event, students made holiday cards for the residents at the Sunnyview Nursing Home in Trenton. The students enjoyed getting in the holiday spirit and bringing some cheer to the residents throughout the holiday season. Upward Bound at NCMC is 100 percent funded by the U.S. Department of Education at a rate of $309,505 for the current year. Upward Bound assists high school students in preparation for successful college entrance by providing academic instruction and advisement, motivational and study skills, academic and cultural activities, and other support services necessary to give that extra “push” to those interested in completing a postsecondary education. Upward Bound at NCMC serves high school students from Chillicothe, Gallatin, Brookfield, Hamilton, Trenton and Tri-County. Five Points Alive will present Downtown Christmas on Friday, December 1 in Downtown Trenton. Activities scheduled include a soup supper at the Grand River Baptist Association from 4:30-7:00 p.m., visit with Santa at 5 p.m. at the gazebo in Sesquicentennial Park, the lighted parade at 5:30 p.m., the THS band, colorguard and drumline performance at 6 p.m. at the Ketcham Center, and the group “Winsome” at the Grundy County-Jewett Norris Library, followed by Christmas Carols. Other events include Preceptor Nu’s hot chocolate stand at Howard’s Department Store, the gingerbread contest at The Space, sponsored by Art’s Alive, and the Hodge Cookie Walk at 1015 Main. Come on out and enjoy a fun-filled evening as we get in the Christmas spirit in Downtown Trenton.
DAR Reception for Veterans
The Dorcas Richardson Chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution (DAR) will be hosting a coffee and cookie reception for Veterans, First Responders and others that help our community and country remain safe. The reception will be held on Monday, December 4 at 2 pm in the fellowship hall at the First Baptist Church in Trenton. As a part of the “Wreaths Across America” program, a wreath will be dedicated and placed at a later date at the World War I Memorial at Moberly Park. The public is invited to attend this reception.

MoDOT No MOre Trash! Contest
The Missouri Department of Transportation invites Missouri students in grades K-12 to help fight litter in Missouri – and to have creative and educational fun – by participating in the 2024 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest. The contest is part of MoDOT’s annual “No MOre Trash!” statewide litter campaign, which is
held in April. The contest encourages school-aged kids to join in the fight against litter by decorating a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter prevention message using a variety of creative materials. Schools, or home school programs, may submit one trash can entry in each competition category: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 – and new this year is
grades 9-12. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to the contest rules and effective use of the theme and logo. First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of $600 and a trophy awarded to the sponsoring school. There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school groups must submit a completed entry form online with up to three photos and a release form by March 15. gram between the city and the Missouri Highways and Transportation commission for Financial assistance for sidewalk construction. The sidewalk would go along Highway 6 from 4th Street to Dollar General. It was discussed that the sidewalk would be a good thing but there needed to be something put in place in the budget for maintaining the sidewalks. All council members voted yes for the approval of the sidewalk. Bill No. 58 stated an ordinance be put in place to amend table VIII-A entitled “Physically disabled parking spaces” of schedule VIII entitled “Reserved Parking Spaces” of title III entitled “Traffic Code” of the Trenton city code. The list was found to not include some changes and was decided to be tabled until the next meeting to look into updating the list further. Bill No. 59 stated that an ordinance of the city calling for submission to the voters of the city of a proposition authorizing a sales tax for economic development purposes and establishing an economic development
sales tax board and program. A motion was made and a vote was taken with Fisher and Briggs voting no and Brown, Humphreys, Meinecke, Mlika, and Dolan voting yes. The City council then moved on to unfinished business. Council member Glenn Briggs brought up the discussion from the last meeting regarding the maximum and minimum for the electric fund. He believed that since they are usually over the max that they should just get rid of it and only have a set minimum. It was declared that having a max is just a policy, not an ordinance, and that it can be looked into further. Moving on to the new business, first up was the update regarding the transfer of property to Shane Michael. The property was approved by the past council and will be looking to make improvements regarding access from roads. The next discussion was regarding the COLA and wage adjustment. A motion was made to accept a 6.5 percent increase for the COLA with all council members voting yes. Next on the agenda was the discussion of the water/sewer distribution
department starting wages. It is hoped to get employees to stay and be able to run two crews so they could have one crew on call and to give the other a break. It was discussed that if the council takes care of one department, what about the others? It was pointed out that this discussion was mainly focused on water/sewer. Urton recommended that they adjust the starting wages to $19.07 per hour. They hope to continue their progress with CDLs and give the new hires the knowledge they need. The council approved Urton’s recommendation. The final discussion on the agenda was regarding the placing of items in the TMU Bills. Council member Briggs took over saying “if it didn’t come from us, it doesn’t go in the bills.” It was said that there have been times that city resources have been used to promote businesses. They discussed creating a new policy to prevent this from happening in the future. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm. The next city council meeting will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Graham McVay
Cindy Renee Roy Cindy Roy went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, November 26, 2023, after a self-less battle with ovarian cancer. She passed away at home under hospice care surrounded by love and comfort. Cindy came into life July 24, 1970 in Chillicothe, to parents Gary and Iona Pete White, and joined sister Robin. She grew up on the farm in the Sampsel area attending school in Chillicothe. Cindy enjoyed rural life as a child and teenager. Some of her fondest family memories growing up were cutting firewood on Sunday afternoons, going to her granny’s for lunch, mushroom hunting, deer hunting with her dad, and time spent at the county fair showing her market steers. She was active in 4-H, a varsity football cheerleader for four years and a homecoming queen candidate her senior year of high school. She attended college at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Advertising. On August 3, 1991, Cindy was married to Scott Roy. They resided in Warrensburg for six months while Cindy completed college. Upon graduation, they moved to Prescott, AZ, where Scott was residing and attending college. While in Arizona, Cindy worked for Strum Ruger, Prescott Livestock Auction and was a grocery manager

for Albertson’s for 6 years. They had two daughters during that time, Breilly and Sadie, who were the sunshine of her life. In the spring of 1998, they returned home to Trenton so their daughters could grow up near family. From 1999 to 2019 Cindy was employed by Grand River Mutual as a customer service representative and then as the Marketing Representative. In the fall of 2019 she joined Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri as their Marketing Director, where she was employed until the spring of 2023 before she retired due to illness. Cindy was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Trenton. Her God-given ministry was quilting, baking, and decorating, which she did for family, friends and often just to brighten someone’s day. Cindy’s life fully revolved around her family and friends. She was constantly engaged in her
daughters’ lives, fully supporting them in all endeavors as unique individuals. She never missed any of their school or extracurricular activities. Cindy enjoyed being outdoors. Some of her favorite outdoor interests included canoeing, fishing, mushroom hunting for the “big one” with her friend Sarah, boating on the lake with the Dolan family, flower gardening, and walking with friends. Sunday afternoons were spent rooting on her Kansas City Chiefs with her family and the Dolans. One of her favorite family activities were the years spent while Breilly and Sadie were showing cattle. She enjoyed spending time at the barn washing and grooming the calves and helping break them to lead. She was an ever faithful “show mom”, making sure lunch and snacks were packed, jeans were manure free, pulling a comb when needed to help get a calf show-ready, to helping calve on cold winter nights keeping warm towels ready for newborn calves and hot chocolate ready for frozen girls. Above all, she cherished the relationship and fellowship with her “show family”. Cindy is survived by her husband, Scott of 32 years; daughter, Breilly Roy of Fayette; daughter, Sadie Stimpson, son-in-law, Ryan and granddaughter, Hattie Sue of Farmersville; two daughters-of-the-heart,
Lauren and Morgan Dolan; parents, Gary and Pete White of Mooresville; sister, Robin Quinn and brother-in-law, Raymond of Avalon; mother-in-law, Babe Roy of Spickard; numerous nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. She is preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; father-inlaw, Jim Roy; and son-of-the-heart, Drew Dolan. On behalf of the family, we greatly appreciate your support and condolences. In lieu of flowers, Cindy wished to have memorial contributions made in her honor to be split equally between the Trenton FFA Chapter and the Central Methodist University Marine Biology program. Mr. Graham McVay, a 60-year-old resident of Trenton, died at 11:25 p.m., Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Trenton. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, north of Trenton. Open visitation will be Thursday, November 30, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 [.m. at Slater-Neal Funeral Home in Trenton. Mr. McVay was born on October 21, 1963, in Trenton, the son of Robert Ross and Barbara Evelyn Perry McVay. He graduated from Trenton High School in 1982 and graduated from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture in 1988. He retired in 2023 after working for 35 years for the Trenton R-9 School District. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Trenton. He is survived by the many staff and students of the Trenton R-9 School District. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Perry McVay. Memorials to either the Trenton R-9 School District to use for a memorial in Graham’s honor or the First Christian Church may be left with the funeral home. Susan Louise Vollenweider Ryan Susan Louise Vollenweider Ryan, 78, of Independence, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, November 26, 2023. In her final days, she was loved and surrounded by her family. Susie was born on March 5, 1945 in LaCrosse, WI to Henry and Naoma Vollenweider. She was the third of nine children. During her grade school years, her parents moved to Lexington, MO to manage Kerr Apple Orchards. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1963 and went on to further her education at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in 1967. It was in Columbia where she met and married David L. Ryan on September 10, 1967. One child was born of the marriage, their daughter, Sarah Jane Ryan. Upon David’s return to Trenton to start his medical practice, Susie took an ac-

tive role in the community. She was involved in many organizations, including the Trenton Park Board, Antique Study Club, Bridge Club and Master Gardeners. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Her greatest contribution to Trenton though, was as an original trustee of the Rose Hoover Foundation. You can still see her influence today if you drive through Eastside and Moberly Parks and North Central Missouri College and admire the trees and landscaping. She wanted to make Trenton a beautiful place to live and for all to enjoy.
Susie’s love language was giving to others. Whether it was a needlepointing a pillow, knitting a Christmas stocking or baking a favorite dish, she always had a way of making people feel special. Her home and fashion were a reflection of who she was–nothing too fancy, but classy and charming. Her favorite way to spend time was laughing with her seven sisters and one brother, talking at length with Ellen Dolan, working with Donna Christy and the ladies at Barnes Greenhouses and enjoying visits from Tricia and Andrew. Her greatest joy was her daughter, Sarah Jane. They simply enjoyed each other’s company and, occasionally, a good cherry coke. The depth of Susie’s fun-loving spirit and her laughter will be missed by all. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Jane Ryan Hill (Andy); grandchildren, Tricia Ryan Hill Brizendine (Isaac) and Andrew Tye Hill; sisters, Lucy Rhu
Weaver, Becky Eiman, Sarah Apperson (Gordon), Ike Day (Tom), Mitzi Hund (Ken), Louise Pieper (Dan), Charlie Vollenweider (Kathy) and Teresa Vollenweider. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who brought her great joy. Susie has now moved from her home to our heart. Life has its moments of sorrow, and Susie endured her share. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Naoma Vollenweider and brotherin-law, Ron Eiman. In a final tribute to this special sister, mother and grandmother, a private family service will be held at Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City. BNB October Meeting The Trenton Building and Nuisance Board met in open session Monday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m. at city hall. Officers and members present included Chairman David Mlika, Gloria Anderson, Sarah Maloney, Lindsay Stevens and Harry Kately; Code Enforcement Officer Wes Barone; Police Chief Rex Ross; Mayor Jackie Soptic; City Administrator Ron Urton and City Clerk Cindy Simpson. Members not in attendance were Vickie Meservey and Mary Axtell. Chairman Mlika called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The minutes from the September 25 meeting were approved. During public comment time, discussion was held concerning Wesley United Methodist Church. Larry Bunnell said the district superintendent has to come up and hold a meeting with the members of the church. It was decided to declare Wesley Church a nuisance. In unfinished business, the board discussed declaration of nuisance proper-
ties. Property at 2002 Lulu Street, owned by Andrew and Kristin Newbegin, was moved to public hearing after Barone said Kristin came in and got a demo permit. At the September meeting, Barone mentioned that the garage on property at 2105 Princeton Road, owned by Barbara Morgans, needed to be torn down. He said this still needs to be done. The board voted to move the property to public hearing. Under public hearing, Barone reported that Jacob and Venessa Smith, owners of property at 2201 Park Lane, had called that day and said the board needed to move it forward. The board voted to move the property to findings of fact. It was reported that work has been completed on property at 1717 Chicago Street, owned by Taniela Otukolo. It was decided to remove this property from the nuisance list. Under findings of fact, it was reported that Fred and

Patsy Griffin, owners of property at 2102 Park Lane, have been working on the property. It was decided to give them a 30-day extension to complete the work. Under certificate of existence of dangerous building, it was reported that property at 510 E. 17th Street, owned by Kim Allen, property at 308 S. Main Street, owned by Warren & Jackie Soptic, and property at 418 W. 13th Ct., owned by Christian Lopez, have all been recorded at the courthouse. Under new business, Barone said work on the Lakeview parking lot is being finished up, but the owners still have work to do. They are bringing in blocks for the lower parking lot. Glen Briggs asked Barone to look at the old J.C.Penney building roof. It was voted to declare property at 500 E. 8th Street, owned by Sailokeini Talivakaola, as a nuisance. Barone said the roof is done on property at 824 Custer, owned by Sione Penitani Unu and Lose Unu, and they have a temporary fix on the basement. They have gone back to California for awhile. Police Chief Ross reported the department has worked 136 nuisances so far this year. Ross said property at 611 W. Crowder Road, owned by Steven Oakley, will be checked for nuisances and too many unlicensed vehicles. The meeting adjourned at 6:25 p.m.

The Shakespearean Circle met on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church Activity Center in Trenton. Members in attendance included Krista Rickerson, Amy White, Susan Engelmann, Sarah Dannar and Terry Cobb. Following the business meeting, Susan Engelmann introduced Act V of “Antony & Cleopatra” and provided a few additional insights about the play
overall. Susan noted that Cleopatra had no soliloquy in the play which was fitting since she was always acting and needed to have an audience. After viewing the video of Act V, members discussed the study questions. The next meeting of the Shakespearean Circle will be the annual Christmas luncheon held at the home of Sandy McGinnis in Chillicothe on Wednesday, December 13.

Rick Sharp of St. Joseph, Industrial Technology Instructor/Coordinator at the Savannah Campus, has been selected as North Central Missouri College’s Outstanding Employee for November. Rick has been employed at NCMC for five years. Rick describes his job as team building, teaching, and troubleshooting. When asked what his favorite thing about NCMC is, he said, “How many people work so well together and always make you feel welcome!” At NCMC, Rick established a quality automation training program and would like to compete at the Skills USA National Robotics Competition. In the future, Rick would like to advance automation training and have an FAA-certified drone program. When Rick isn’t at work, you can find him at his lake house, fishing, or hunting.
On November 8, 2023 Trenton FFA had eight members participate in Area 2 Fall Speaking. Members moving on to districts were Arya Meeker - Missouri Pork Association - 3rd Place and Kinsley Otto - Missouri Pet Breeders - 3rd Place. Trenton FFA sent 16 members to the 96th Annual National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, IN. During the trip, members participated in agrotourism by visiting RDM Shrimp Farm, an indoor saltwater shrimp facility, and Fair Oaks Farm, a large-scale dairy and hog farm featuring robotic milking. Members also attended the Opening Session of the convention, participated in the career show and expo, and watched Cinch’s World's Toughest Rodeo. Trenton FFA hosted the annual Barnwarming on November 28th. High school students and FFA members attended the event, which included line dances, games, socializing, snacks and Barnwarming royalty. Trenton FFA also collected over 100 canned food items during the event, which were donated to the Grundy Community Food Pantry. RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM The Radiologic Technology Program is a two-year program offering an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The degree includes classroom instruction, practice in a skills lab, and clinical experience in a variety of healthcare settings. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to sit for the national registry examination administered Mallary Hann, by the American Registry of Radiologic Tech- Radiologic Technology Program nologists. Director There are many exciting things happening in Radiologic Technology. In August, the program moved into its new home on the Savannah Campus. There, students have access to state-of-the-art equipment, including two Carestream Evolution Plus x-ray rooms. In the Resources Center, students have access to a peer tutor (who is a second year Radiologic Technology student) and a professional tutor (who is a registered Radiologic Technologist). The program also recently received its accreditation award letter and is now fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Applications are currently being accepted for students who wish to join the cohort that will begin in the Summer of 2024. There are some prerequisite and specific application requirements which can be found on the NCMC Radiologic Technology Program webpage. The application deadline is December 15th. Food inflation lingers It's the nagging concern of Federal Reserve officials and everyday grocery-store shoppers alike: Inflation. Prices at your neighborhood food store, though, are rising more slowly than they did last year. Grocery prices had soared in 2021 after the pandemic disrupted supply chains. Then food inflation worsened after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, upending global supplies of wheat and other grains. Prices for all groceries soared 13.5% in August 2022 from a year earlier, the largest such increase since 1979. But since then, year-over-year inflation
has steadily slowed as Americans have shifted more of their spending to restaurants and other experiences. Grocery prices rose just 2.1% in October from a year earlier, though that still exceeds the pre-pandemic pace of about 1% a year. While price increases have slowed, prices haven’t fallen. The cost of a gallon of milk or a pound of ground beef is still far higher than before the pandemic. Most Americans have received some inflation-adjusted pay raises since then. But expensive groceries are still a reminder of the spike in inflation of the past 2 1/2 years.

Gallatin Tournament Update After two days of basketball in Gallatin, the bracket makes sees some changes as teams win and lose. The first game on Monday was the #2 seed, Trenton Lady Bulldogs, against the #7 seed, Winston Lady Redbirds. The Lady Bulldogs came out on top winning 59-14. Game two of the Monday games was the #2 Braymer Bobcats against the #7 North Harrison Shamrocks. After a tough battle Braymer took the win with a score of 68-46. Game three on Monday was the #1 seed Lady Polo Panthers
against the #8 North Harrison Lady Shamrocks. Polo coasted to an easy win with a score of 70-5, with Hanna Vaught dropping 19 field goals. The final game on Monday night was the #3 seed Polo Panthers against the #6 seed, Winston Red birds. Polo defeated Winston with a final score of 74-59. Tuesday’s games started with the #3 seed, Braymer Lady Bobcats taking on the #6 seed, Maysville Lady Wolverines. With a close game that came down to the last few seconds of the game, the Lady Wolverines came out on top,
winning with a score of 40-38. Game two was the #1 seed Maysville boys against the #8 Gilman City boys. Maysville took the win with a score of 76-44. Game three was the #4 seeded Gallatin Lady Bulldogs against the #5 Gilman City Lady Hawks. With a tough defensive showing by Gallatin, they were able to take the lead and come out on top with a score of 54-42. The final game of Tuesday night was the #4 seeded Trenton Bulldogs against the #5 seeded Gallatin Bulldogs. With Gallatin
leading most of the game, Trenton came back in the fourth quarter and took the win, 58-51. The Wednesday games will consist of North Harrison girls taking on the Gilman City girls at 4:30, the Gilman City boys taking on the Gallatin boys at 5:45, the Winston girls taking on the Braymer girls at 7:00 and the North Harrison boys taking on the Winston boys at 8:15. The winners side of the bracket will play Thursday with the first game being Polo girls against the Gallatin girls at 4:30, the Maysville boys against the Trenton boys at 5:45, the Trenton
girls against the Maysville girls at 7:00 and the final game of the night will be the Braymer boys against the Polo boys. Last year’s tournament winners were the Polo Lady Panthers and the Gallatin Bulldogs. With Polo winning their first game they are on track to take home another Gallatin tournament championship. With Gallatin being sent to the consolation side of the bracket, the boys matchups will be looking to crown a new Gallatin Tournament Champion.

The Gallatin Lady Bulldogs took on the Gilman City Hawks during their first matchcup of the Gallatin Invitational tournament. In the first quarter Gallatin dropped 12 points. In the second quarter Kallie Salmon had a total of 12 points including two threes. The Lady Bulldogs would win 54-42.
