Dangerous dogs and surplus equipment discussed at City Council Trenton City Council convened Monday, January 9th at City Hall to address a fairly light agenda consisting of two proposed bills and new business of seven items. Bill number one of the new year would establish a contract for hauling sand between the city and Hostetler Trucking. The contract was approved unanimously. Bill number two was an ordinance amending the city code to address “Owning, Keeping or Harboring Dangerous Dogs” in the city of Trenton. Section 210.200 outlines how a dog might be considered “dangerous” through inflicting serious injury, injury or killing of livestock, dog
fighting or attacking or threatening citizens when unprovoked. The council unanimously approved the ordinance. The designation of “dangerous” will be determined by a five member citizen board and one member will serve as the liaison to the city. In new business, appointments were made to the Convention and Visitors Bureau including Jim Norris, Micah Landes and Debbie Carman. Approval of bids was made for improvements to the water treatment plants. These improvements were awarded to Irvin Bilt Construction of Chillicothe. There was discussion of [See City, Page 2]
BRIEFS Bridge Work in Grundy County
The bridge rehabilitation project on U.S. Route 65 over Route 6 in Trenton will continue through February. Temporary traffic signals will continue to guide motorists through the work zone. A 17-foot width restriction is in place. Route W will be CLOSED south of Route F through early April 2023 for a bridge replacement project at the Gees Creek Bridge.
NCMC Closure
North Central Missouri College will be closed on Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This closing includes all buildings and offices at all sites and locations and no classes will be held. The Ketcham Community Center will have alternative hours on Monday from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. NCMC and the Ketcham Center will reopen on Tuesday, January 17 for regular hours of business.
VFW District One Meeting
The District One VFW meeting will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 at VFW Post #858 in Chillicothe. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and the Patriot Pen essay winners and Voice of Democracy essay winners and teachers will be honored at 11 a.m.
R-9 Phone Service Update
Mid-States Services will be installing a new phone system for the Trenton R-9 School District on Friday, January 13. This will cause some phone disruption at each building in the district. If you cannot get through to the building you need, you may call the District office at 660-3593994. Trenton R-9 holds first meeting of 2023 Board members, faculty and staff of the Trenton R9 School District met in regular session Tuesday night and recognized several honorees before the beginning of regular business. First, monthly Art Exhibit winners were recognized in front of the board. Schyler Schlichting, Abigail Way, Alijah Suarez and Arianna Cox of Rissler Elementary were recognized and honored by having their art displayed at the District Office. Next, Teachers of the Quarter were recognized by their building principals. Heather Epperson, Rissler Elementary, Joy Bridges, Trenton Middle School and Tash Dowell, Trenton High School were honored by the board. After the approval of minutes and the consent agenda, the board moved to consider several items. In old business, filing for school board candidates
closed December 27 and those running for three, three year terms on the board are incumbents, Brandon Gibler, Jason Hostetler and Andy Burress. Challengers for those positions are Joshua Shuler, Ronda Lickteig and Robin Chambers. The election will be April 4, 2023. In new business, the Summer School Contract with Catapult was extended through 2027. Superintendent Gott explained that by extending the contract with a company that the district is quite happy with, they will avoid rate increases for the next four years, saving taxpayers money. The proposal passed unanimously. A Grant Application was approved unanimously by the board. Fourth grade teacher Cassandra Marshall has applied for a GEC Grant to purchase additional vocabulary building materials.
Local Students Make Dean’s List Linn Tech Announces Fall Dean’s List
State Technical College of Missouri in Linn would like to congratulate our December 2022 students who achieved the Dean’s List during the 2022 fall semester. To be placed on the Dean’s List, a full-time student must earn a semester grade point average between 3.5 and 4.0 on a 4-point scale. Those receiving the honor from this area include Chase Otto of Trenton, Charleen Prentice and Zeb Schwartzkopf of Princeton, Joshua Meservey of Chula, Donald McCracken of Chillicothe, Johnny Stout of Gallatin, Jonathan Johnson of Mercer and Michael Pipes of Milan.
Martin Makes Dean’s List
Columbia College recently announced its dean's list for the Fall 2022 semester (August-December 2022). To be named to the dean's list, a student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale. Among those named to the dean's list is Danielle Martin of Chillicothe, who attended Day Campus - Columbia. Several amendments to the board's policy manual were approved along with the updated calendar for the district which were voted on by staff before being presented to the board. Both were unanimously approved. Staff reports on Early Childhood Evaluations, Parents as Teachers program evaluation and princi-
pal reports were heard before superintendent Daniel Gott addressed the board. Particularly of note were his comments on the special attention being given to discourage bullying in all schools. Programs to identify and deal with bullying are constantly being updated and social media has made the age-old issue [See Trenton, Page 2]
Pesticide Application Training Set Farmers who want to purchase or apply restricted-use pesticides on property owned or rented by them, must have a private pesticide applicator license. Currently, there are two options to obtain certification or renew a license. The first option is a training session via Zoom. Anyone can join these meetings from their home computer. Go to www.extension.missouri.edu/events and search for private pesticide applicator training to find the date and time of the next virtual training event. Also, in-person programs are scheduled for 2023. There will be a faceto-face program held in Grundy County on January 31 at the NCMC Barton Farm Campus located at 96 South East 8th Avenue in Trenton. The program will
begin at 10:00 am and will be repeated at 2:00 pm. There is no charge for the program, but you must preregister to attend by calling 660-895-5123. Individuals who are certifying for the first time must possess a copy of the Missouri Private Pesticide Applicator Reference Manual. They may be purchased at the MU Extension website, at: www.extension.missouri.ed u/m87.
