ABCs of Leadership -By Harvey Mackay
As children, we played “follow the leader” for hours on end. The crazier the route and antics, the more we liked it. Being the leader was the best part. As working adults, “follow the leader” takes on a whole new meaning. Leadership is an art and a skill. It’s hard work that is extremely rewarding and occasionally completely thankless. What traits make a great leader? These are my thoughts: A is for accountability. When President Harry Truman said “The buck stops here,” he was demonstrating that he was willing to take the blame along with the praise. Leaders accept responsibility for their actions as well as those that report to them. B is for boundaries. Effective leaders respect personal and professional boundaries. In other words, they never expect their followers to do something they would not do themselves. C is for courage. Tough times and tough choices require courageous leaders. Doing the right thing instead of the easy thing is a mark of courage. D is for decisions. Good decisionmaking skills are priceless. Remember,
not making a decision is a decision in itself. E is for enthusiasm. A leader must be enthusiastic about their job. My mantra: Do what you love, love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life. F is for fearless. Leaders should adopt Franklin Roosevelt’s philosophy: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Leaders must not be afraid to be bold. G is for growth. This includes your growth as a leader, your employees’ growth to reach their potential and your company’s growth to achieve goals. H is for heart. A good decision must factor in the human element. When your head and your heart say the same thing, you can bet it’s the right answer. I is for influence. Leadership doesn’t mean getting people to do their jobs; it means getting people to do their best. J is for judgment. A leader must demonstrate consistently good judgment in order to set the standard for the organization. Followers depend on consistent, level-headed judgment. K is for knowledge. No one expects leaders to know everything, but everyone expects leaders to know whom to ask when they don’t have the information at hand. L is for learning. Always be learning something -- lifelong learning is an important attribute for a leader. M is for mentor. Just as you needed
some help to get to the top, offer your expertise to the next generation of leaders. N is for new. Never be afraid to try something new, even if the old way isn’t broken. The results might be better than you expected. O is for organization. This is a twofer: your personal organization and the organization you lead. Your office may be a disaster area, but make sure your mind is organized. The organization you lead should always be foremost on your list of priorities. P is for people person. You are leading people. Q is for quick-thinking. A leader must be able to think on the spot, even if the answer is “we need to give this more thought.” A leader can figure out the difference. R is for recognition. Be sure to heap recognition on those who have worked hard and achieved. Sharing the credit doesn’t diminish you, it demonstrates your ability to hire well and acknowledge achievement. S is for strength. A strong leader never waivers on values, ethics or commitment. That’s a very tall order, but absolutely essential. T is for team-builder. Whether you are a team of two or two thousand, as a leader you are also cheerleader-in-chief. “Go, team, go” only works if you provide the right environment. Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Not only should your presence be felt, you should be personally present at events large and small. Get to know your staff beyond their working titles. W is for wisdom. No one is born wise, but some people learn faster than others what makes an organization tick. X is for example. (I’m not a good speller.) If you want people to follow the leader, you must set a proper course. Inspire those you lead with your example.
Y is for yeoman’s service. A leader has to be willing to work harder than everyone else in the organization. Adopt a servant mentality to be a truly effective leader. Z is for zest. Anniversary Open House Jim and Erna Schwanke
Jim and Erna Schwanke will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 2-4 pm at the Grey Eagle Senior Center. Jim and Erna (Kuehne) were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle on October 2, 1951. They have three children: Stephen (Judy) of Sartell, Christy (David) Ploof of Brainerd and Tim (Brenda) of Grey Eagle. They also have 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Jim and Erna have lived and worked on their farm, which has been in the family for almost 100 years. The celebration is open to friends and family, whose presence is the only gift requested.

Norbert and Hellen Dehn celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 25th with a mass at Seven Dolors Church in Albany. Obituaries Paul R. Engel
Paul R. Engel, age 64, of Grey Eagle, died in Pam’s arms after a battle with lung cancer on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Paul Robert Engel was born May 16, 1947 in Little Falls, Minnesota to George and Elsie (McClintick) Engel. He called South Dakota home with his first wife, Patricia Hehn. He worked as a logger in South Dakota while the couple raised three children. They later divorced and he remarried Pamela Reimers on July 28, 2001 at their home in Grey Eagle. Paul worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose while the couple farmed near the Grey Eagle area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with his family, friends, and their dog, Minnie. He especially, enjoyed having coffee with the guys in the morning.
Blanche T. Schultz
Blanche T. Schultz, 91 year old resident of Little Falls, MN formerly of Swanville, MN passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Bridgeway Estates in Little Falls, MN. Funeral Services were held Friday, September 23, 2011 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville with Rev. David Packo and Rev. Steve Priola officiating. Burial followed at the Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Blanche T. Schultz was born on September 12, 1920 in Maurice, Iowa to the late John & Nellie (Brink) Van Peursem. She was baptized in the First Reformed Church of Maurice. Blanche attended school in Maurice, IA until 1932 when her parents moved to Merrill, IA. She graduated from Merrill High School when she was 16 years old. Blanche then attended NBT Business College in Sioux City, IA. On September 17, 1939 she was united in marriage to Ivan Schultz in Spencer, IA. They farmed near Le Mars, IA until 1950 when they purchased a dairy farm near Swanville, MN and she most recently resided in Little Falls at Bridgeway Estates. She was a member of Swanville Bible Church where she served as Sunday School and Bible School teacher
Paul Ripplinger Paul was a member of the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Pam “Ma” Engel of Grey Eagle; children, Melissa (Adam) Avery of Henning, Christine (Mike) Maltaverne of Rapid City, SD, Paul Engel of Deadwood, SD, and Adam Engel of Sturgis, SD; sister, Mary (fiancé, Louis Thompson) Muellner of Burtrum; brother, Clyde (Darlene) Engel of Melrose; five grandchildren, Teagan, Ariah, and Allison Engel, Ijzaya Sterna, and Emily Maltaverne; five honorary grandchildren, Morgan and Riley Poepping, Troy Muellner, April and Shelby Ramirez. Paul was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois Warner; brother, Jim Engel; father-in-law, Arnold Reimers; brother-in-law, Herb Muellner, Sr.; and nephews, Herb Muellner, Jr., Danny Muellner, and Ricky Warner. Serving as casket bearers were Charles Fox, David “Buzz” Barber, David Tschida, Steve Hiltner, John Stuckel, and Tom Dahl. Honorary bearers were Glen VanHavermaet, Al VanHavermaet, Matt Zinniel, John Blonigen, Randy Moening, Bert Hollermann, Shawn Hollermann, Ryan Hollermann, John Schuett, and Ron Stumpf. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Besides being a homemaker Blanche worked off and on doing office work, most recently at Hart Press in Long Prairie and Morrison County Public Health. Blanche especially liked feeding birds and watching sports. She most of all loved her family and making them quilts and birthday cakes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, September 30, 2011 at Church of All Saints on River Street formerly St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford with Father Mark Stang officiating. Burial will be held in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday and from 9:30-10:30 A.M. on Friday at the Church. Parish Prayers will be prayed at 5 P.M. and Knights of Columbus Office of the Death will be at 7 P.M. on Thursday at the Church. D o r o t h y Solarz, 93 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell, MN. Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, September 26, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Father Michael Kellogg officiating. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Dorothy was born May 5, 1918 to the late Joseph and Anna (Von Boken) Austing. She attended school in St. Rosa, Minnesota. Dorothy was united in marriage to Leo Solarz on February 24, 1936 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN. She worked alongside her husband on the family farm while raising their 9 children. Dorothy was known for her wonderful sweet rolls,
Holdingford, MN. He served on the Elmdale Township board for over 30 years and also the Upsala Creamery Board for many years. Paul gave his time generously to the church where he was a trustee at St. Mary’s in Holdingford. He enjoyed playing cards and attending his children and grandchildren’s ball games. Paul was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. Paul is survived by wife of 54 years Lucille (Vos) Ripplinger; sons, Keith (Teresa), Steven (JoAnn), Kevin (Sheila), Paul (Susie), Myron (Kristy), Matthew (Rhonda), Nathan (Laura); daughters, Gail (Arnold) Barthel, Lynn (Joey) Langner, Karen (Dan) Murphy, Joan (Pete) Boeckermann, Mary (Ken) Sowada, Martha (Bruce) Baggenstoss, and Carol (Kevin) Lampert; brothers, Leo and Jim Ripplinger; sisters, Alvina Mader, Elaine Gerads, Bernice (Ernie) Skwira, and Mary Kostrba; 76 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren. Paul is preceded in death by parents, Thomas and Mary Ripplinger; brothers and sisters, Michael, Helen, Alois, Julia Shabel, Frank, Barbara Schurman, Joe, Kathryn Kortenbusch; 3 infant grandchildren, Nicole, Emily, & Grace, and several brothers and sisters-in-law. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel.

Lawrence H. Mueller, age 88 of Melrose, died Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Sts. On October 11, 1949 he married Mildred “Millie” Ramler at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. The couple farmed north of Melrose for over 40 years until building their home in Melrose in 1983. Lawrence was affectionately known as the “engineer” on the farm. For many years after moving to Melrose, Lawrence continued to help on the farm by driving tractor. Katherine A. “Kitty” Latzka, 81, of Melrose died on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 after a fight with cancer. Kitty was born in Melrose, MN to Marie and William Latzka. Upsala September Athletes of the Month Football: Brock is a junior at Upsala High School and plays nose tackle on defense and runs the fullback position on offense. Brock has received this honor because he can always be counted on to set a good example. Brock not only demonstrates positive manners and behaviors, Brock also reaches above and beyond to help his fellow teammates and classmates out. Brock is also the team’s extra point and field goal kicker. It was Brock’s kick from 32 yards out with 10 seconds remaining in the game vs New York Mills which resulted in the Patriots first win. Brock’s top favorites are cheeseburgers, hunting, Camaro’s, P.E. class
and the television show Sportscenter. Congrats to Brock as Upsala’s September Football Athlete of the Month. Tennis: Megan Tschida is a senior at Upsala Area Schools. She has been a very strong 1st doubles player for two years since her return to tennis. Last year she had the second most wins on the team and took third place in the section only, missing a trip to state by one match! This year with her partner Sara Roerick, she is also having a great year! They will be one of the top teams in the conference and also the section. Congratulations Megan!

“Do you still have that red dress?” the husky voice said on my answering machine. My husband Bob and I were having dinner. I knew immediately it was James, the stirring charismatic philosophy instructor I was infatuated with 27 years ago. “Who’s that?” Bob asked. “I don’t know.” The lying begins. James finally identified himself in his long seductive message. “Losing you was the biggest mistake of my life,” he went on to say. “I’m living in Seattle. I want to see you.” I kept eating like nothing was happening. “Isn’t that the guy you were crazy about?” Bob said. “The teacher with the motorcycle?” “Oh, is that him?” I couldn’t look up from forkfuls of Thai food. What do you do when an old flame enters a marriage of 23 years? A marriage based on honesty. You lie about it and ignore it, of course. I didn’t return James’ call.

Two days later he called again. “How could I have let you go?” he murmured on the machine. “Please call me back.” Naturally I was eating this up. After pacing for an hour I called. I got his answering machine. I spoke slowly, deliberately and with confidence. “Hi,” I said. “It’s James. I mean it’s . . . .” Then I forgot my name. I started my nervous habit of building up phlegm and began loud liquidy throat-clearing the way my dad did every morning in his Yiddish accent, “YECH-ACH, ECH, ECH.” I followed this with my hiccups that for some reason always sound like a question. “Sure I have (hic?) the red dress. I . . . was wearing it when you called.” I glanced in the mirror. My reflection looked like that painting called The Scream. “I have a . . . .” I went blank. “ . . . person – Bob. We (hic?) do stuff.” Then I hung up. Later, we took a walk around our favorite pond. Bob was pensive. I knew he felt threatened and upset. I took his hand. He turned to me and sang, “James and Saralee sittin’ in a tree . . . ” “Very funny.” I whisked my hand away. “Aren’t you worried about this?” I asked. “Of course not.” We walked further. “Do you ever wonder about the road not taken? Like, if you had married beautiful skinny blonde Jenni-with-an-i?” “Never.” “You remember - the one you had pizza with on the lawn at the Tanglewood music theater where you and I have never been together?” “I remember.” “ . . . the one you had lunch with while you wore that madras shirt I gave

I believe that the hallmark of a relationship is how you feel about yourself when you’re with the other person. With James, I always questioned
how I acted and how I looked. I nudged Bob’s shoulder and he opened his eyes. I whispered, “Around you, I feel good about myself. I never think I act like a dork.” Sleepily, he softly touched my cheek and whispered back, “Think again.” I fell asleep thinking about the roads I didn’t take and the ones I did. So much in life is chance. And so much is our own doing. It was purely luck meeting Bob. But the choice of taking this road with him was mine. Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township September 12, 2011 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:05. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, John Young, Jonelle Kirchner (Deputy clerk), Bev Eggerth. Mike Kutter and Mary Ann Primus were absent. Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray Bense made motion to accept agenda as printed. John made the second. Motion carried. Approval of Minutes: Copies of the August 1, 2011 minutes were provided for the board. Ray made motion to approve the minutes as presented. John made the second. Minutes approved. Zoning Report: Bev reported that she had posted a notice in the newspaper stating the sections and titles of the changes to the ordinance. If anyone would like a more information or copies to contact Bev. After the changes are complete they will appear on the county/ township website and a copy will be available at the library. There will be a charge for copies.
Town Clerk’s Report: Deputy Clerk presented the bills for August. Claims list included 7 claims for a total of $10,680.66. Ray made motion to pay the claims. John made the second. The work on roads done by Herdering, Inc. was discussed. Motion carried. District 8 meeting of all townships on September 20, 2011 for all board members at Onamia. Todd County Board of Adjustment sent notice of a public hearing, September 22, for a variance to remove existing cabin and construct a cabin at Big Birch Lake, Aspen Dr. The county not the township is responsible for issuing this permit. Treasurer’s Report: Jonelle Kirchner presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of: $146,946.58; Checks Cleared:13, $8,520.31; Deposits including interest: $927.62; Balance as of August 31, 2011: $139,353.89; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $139,353.89; CD Balance: $41,534.96. John made the motion to accept treasurer’s report. Ray made the second. Motion carried. Road and Bridge Report: John Young presented the road report.
The lake roads will be worked on especially Angular Trail. John suggested that the board and Herdering drive the roads again this fall because of all the rain this past summer which caused washing away of gravel and deep grooves. Ray noted that all work should be done before it freezes and Cozy Cove needs to be reviewed. The roads will be reviewed on Saturday, September 24 if Erv Herdering is available. After checking with the township attorney John reported that the board could give permission to a property owner to plant shrubs and bushes on the township property near the boat landing. A maintenance agreement would need to be written and signed by the property owner and they would also need to agree to remove the shrubs at a future date if requested by the township. The clerk will contact the property owner to check if they are interested. Public Comment: None. Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. John made the second. Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month Swanville Jr/ Sr High is proud to announce Matthew Laliberte as the 7-9th grade student of the month for September. Matthew is the son of Larry Laliberte. Matthew enjoys building things and engineering tasks. Matthew participated in track and the junior high play as a seventh grade student, and earned awards in both activities. His future plans include going to college. MOM Annual Meeting & Elections
Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany, held its annual meeting on September 20, 2011. Tom Vos (Avon) was seated as a newly appointed member of the Board of Directors. Roger Voit (Albany) was appointed to a new 3-year term. Officers were re- elected at the meeting. Steve Blattner (Avon) was elected to serve as President, Bob Schwegler (Albany) as Vice-President, Paul Ampe (Burtrum) as Secretary-Treasurer, and John Hoefs as the Chief Executive Officer. Additional board members not mentioned above include: Michael Naughton, OSB (Seven Dolors Church, Albany), Pat Brenny (Albany), Geri Rakotz-Lenneman (Albany), Mark Sauerer (Sartell), Tom Baumgartner (St. Paul), and Marilyn Bergmann (Grey Eagle). Directors serve 3 year terms with a 3 term maximum.
