Regain control of your life at every level -By Harvey Mackay
No one ever accused Larry Winget of mincing words. Larry, who is often referred to as the Pitbull of Personal Development, wouldn’t take very kindly to it anyway. His books, speeches and television appearances leave no doubt about where he stands and why he feels the way he does. I admire Larry’s courage to speak plainly and without concern for “political correctness,” particularly when writing about a topic that involves convictions and self-confidence. His latest book is bound to pop a few eyeballs, probably starting with the title: “Grow A Pair: How to Stop Being a Victim and Take Back Your Life, Your Business, and Your Sanity.” Larry assures
readers that the title refers to an attitude, not anatomy. “Growing a pair is a state of mind, an attitude, and a way of thinking,” he writes. “It’s about giving up being a victim and taking control of your life at every level.” He adds: “It is the willingness to do the right thing even when everyone else is doing the wrong thing. It has roots in personal responsibility. It’s about drawing lines in the sand. It’s about knowing yourself, knowing your values, and becoming uncompromising in your willingness to do whatever it takes to stand up for them. . . . Don’t you agree that our society is in desperate need of developing that mindset?” I will happily answer: Yes. Larry attributes the social shift in part on the entitlement mentality, attitudes developed during the hippie generation, and the idea that people will do whatever they can get away with. He says, “People will do anything and everything they can until someone stops them from doing it and

sets limits and imposes consequences. Therefore, the solution to this problem is to let people get away with less.” He writes: “Stop tolerating stupidity and poor performance. Stop letting people get away with bad behavior. Break this natural cycle with yourself, your family, and with your co-workers and employees. On the other hand, he wants readers to answer “yes” to questions such as: Do you stand up for yourself and your beliefs even in the face of conflict? Do you recognize your problems as problems but know that with some hard work and a little sweat you will get through it? Do you speak up when you see someone else being mistreated? I was fascinated at the variety of inspirational sources Larry quotes in his book, ranging from Mahatma Gandhi to Benjamin Franklin to Winston Churchill. Those are role models of honesty and courage for any age. Larry offers very practical advice for developing the gumption to change your life. In fact, he breaks it into two dozen categories and explains them very plainly. The one that stands out for me is “Make big, bold, brash, ballsy plans.” He says, “No one ever wrote down a plan to be fat, broke, stupid, lazy, unhappy, and mediocre. These are the things that happen when you don’t have a plan.” I am an inveterate planner. My mantra has always been “Prepare to win.” As I like to say, people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan. Larry puts it this way: “Most people never expect anything bad to ever happen to them until it already has.” Larry also insists that setting clear priorities signals that you are in control of your own life. “People don’t live the life they dream of because it isn’t important enough for them to do what it takes to

live that kind of life. Priorities determine your actions, and your actions determine your results. . . Obituaries Paul J. Voit
Paul J. Voit, age 33, of Albany, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 20, 2013 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota. A sharing of memories was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Paul James Voit was born February 6, 1980 in Melrose, Minnesota to Donald and Liola “Teddy” (Winkels) Voit. He was a member of Melrose High School, class of 1998. Paul loved spending time with his family, especially Lisa and their two daughters. He was a stay at home dad and a full time student at St. Cloud

Technical & Community College. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, playing darts and shooting pool. Survivors include his significant other, Lisa Porter of Albany; daughters, Hannah and Molly Voit, both at home; parents, Don and Liola “Teddy” Voit of Freeport; brothers and sisters, Gary Voit of Freeport, Jody (Scott) Mehr of St. Cloud, John Voit (Shelly Primus) of Grey Eagle, Anne Nienaber (Mike Bolvin) of St. Cloud, Adam Voit of Grey Eagle, Glen Voit of Grey Eagle, Josh Voit of Freeport, and Cory Voit of Freeport; Godson, Carson Mehr; Lisa’s parents, Robert and Diana Rush of St. Cloud; Lisa’s sister, Leslie Aviles (Dan Wolfram) of Avon; and many loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Helen Winkels and John and Rose Voit. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.
Roy R. Warzecha, age 91 of St. Rosa, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 23 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Roy Roman Warzecha was born January 18, 1922 in Elizabeth, Minnesota to Frank, Sr. and Stella (Stein) Warzecha. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On August 26, 1952 he was united in marriage to Geneva Gretsch at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Roy worked for D.H. Blatner for 42 years as a bulldozer operator. He was a

Roy enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, playing cards, and dancing with Geneva. Roy loved working with his hands on inventions in his shop and was known for his green thumb, he could grow anything. He loved animals, especially his dog, Blacky. Survivors include his children, Cindy (Phil) Nevin of Ramsey, Ferd (Jane) Warzecha of Westminster, Colorado, Judy (Roger) Erickson of Sauk Centre, Tony Warzecha of St. Rosa, Anna (Roger) Blenker of Melrose, Laura (Dan) Fuchs of St. Rosa, and Randy (Angela) Warzecha of Aracaju, Brazil; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Frank, Jr. (Marcella) Warzecha of St. Wendel, Frances Shea of Foley, Lois (Al) Wolf of Coon Rapids, and Elaine Corrigan of Foley; and sister-in-law, Valeria Butkowski of Pillager. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva “Gerleen” Warzecha on April 26, 2005; parents; daughter, Mary Warzecha; and brothers, Claude Warzecha, Joe (Evelyn) Warzecha, and Vincent Warzecha; brotherin-law, Jim Corrigan; and good friend, Ernie Lindstrom. Serving as casket bearers were Roger Erickson, Tony Warzecha, Phil Nevin, Dan Fuchs, Roger Blenker, Jr., and Roger Blenker, Sr. Cross bearer was LeeAnna Nevin and scripture bearer was Ellie Fuchs. Joyce M. Gorka, 66 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away Monday, September 16, 2013 at her home in Sobieski, MN, surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating and Father Leo Moenkedick and Father Dick McGuire concelebrating. Burial took place at St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery in Elmdale, MN. Joyce was born on March 3, 1947 in Flensburg, Minnesota to the late Charles and Edith (Peterson) Goebel. She was united in marriage to John Gorka on October 19, 1963 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, Minnesota. Joyce and John resided in Sobieski, Minnesota. She worked at the Elmdale Creamery for several years. In 1976, John and Joyce together bought the Swanville Locker, where they later started their well known Gorka Catering Service with their famous fried chicken and BBQ turkey. In 1987, they purchased Herbie’s Bar in Sobieski, where they also started their annual Bear Ass
Pig Feed. Joyce was always known for all of the cooking and catering for the many weddings, parties, church bazaars and special gatherings. She will be missed by many. Joyce will always be remembered as the most caring, loving, wonderful woman in the world, who was never seen without a smile on her face. Joyce is survived by her husband of 50 years, John Gorka; sons, Dan Gorka of Sobieski, MN; James (Tammy) Gorka of Little Falls, MN; David (Missy) Gorka of Burtrum, MN; and Jason (Cary Blechinger) Gorka of Little Falls, MN; daughter, Donna (Jay Horstman) Lukasavitz of Montrose, MN; siblings, Edwin (Mary Lou) Goebel of Richmond, MN; Eileen Rekowski of St. Cloud, MN; Marcella (Tom) Haeney of St. Cloud, MN; James (Roberta) Goebel of Mahtomedi, MN; LaVerne Schaefer of Little Falls, MN; and Paul Goebel of Otsego, MN; brother-in-law, Jerry Yanta of Little Falls, MN; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 1 step great-grandson. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Edith; brother, Fred Goebel; sister, Barbara Yanta; and her best friend and dog, Max. Honorary pallbearers were Wyatt Gorka, Eric Rasmussen, Paige Landers, Heather Rasmussen and Gabriel Mrosla. Isabell “Teenie” L. Wiehoff I s a b e l l “Teenie” L. Wiehoff, age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the CentraCare Pine Haven Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Melrose. Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council will pray at 4:30 p.m. followed by the American Legion Auxiliary at 6 p.m. and parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Dakota to Alois and Theresa Flock. Teenie married Earl Wiehoff on November 16, 1945 in Gulf Port, Mississippi. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and the Daughters of Isabella Joan of Arc Circle of Melrose. Survivors include her husband, Earl of Melrose; children, Pam (Bob) Kaufman of Edina, Mark Wiehoff of Arlington, Virginia, Mary (Steven) Flock of Golden Valley, and Jannie (Mike) Kappes of Birch Lake; grandchildren, Nathan (Jess) Zirbes, Katie (Bob) Gruber, Sara Lotte Kaufman, Christopher Flock, and Alex Kappes; and several greatgrandchildren. Teenie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen (Bud) Matchinsky, Roseanna “Dottie” (Dick) Egkan, Clarice “Kebbie” (Bill) Jordan; brothers, Alois “Bud” (Smokey) Flock, Jerry (Thelma) Flock; and granddaughter, infant Emily Kappes. Deborah “Debbie” Pfeiffer D e b o r a h “Debbie” Pfeiffer, age 61, of Sauk Rapids, MN, formerly of Swanville, MN, passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 26 at 10:30 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN, with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. A visitation will be held from 9:00-10:00 A.M. on Thursday at the church. Burial will be held at a later date. Deborah A. Tholen was born February 5, 1952 to Florence (Rocheleau) and the late Neal Tholen. She was born and raised in Little Falls, MN. She graduated from St. Francis School in Little Falls, MN in 1970. She was united in marriage to Bruce Pfeiffer on May 13, 1972 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. The couple moved to Minneapolis, MN, until husband, Bruce was drafted into the
United States Army and moved to Texas. The couple then moved to the state of Washington until settling in Swanville, MN. Bruce died on November 8, 2011. Debbie continued living in Swanville, MN until moving to Sauk Rapids, MN in 2012. Debbie worked at Wal-Mart in Little Falls, MN and at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Debbie cherished her time spent with her grandchildren and children. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo and crocheting. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kevin (Rebecca) Pfeiffer of Plymouth, MN, Steven (McKenna) Pfeiffer of River Falls, WI, Michelle Pfeiffer of Hopkins, MN; mother, Florence Tholen of Little Falls, MN; siblings, Diane (Rick) Fraser of Fort Ripley, MN, Wendy (Steve) Hennes of Sartell, MN, Cindy (Craig) Kalahar of Little Falls, MN, Michael (Bonnie) Tholen of Little Falls, MN, Rebecca (Tom) Tholen of Stillwater, MN, Jeffrey (Aimee) Tholen of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Sophia Pfeiffer, Jocslyn Pfeiffer, Kalie Pfeiffer and Griffin Pfeiffer. Frank Eugene Sylvester F u n e r a l services celebrating the life of Frank Eugene Sylvester, age 94 of Albany ( f o r m e r l y Oklahoma City) were held Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the Miller-Carlin Brenny Funeral Home in Albany. Pastor Frederick Kutter officiated. Burial will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City later this week. Frank died peacefully with family at his side at the St. Cloud VA Saturday evening. Frank was born on June 16th 1919 to Theodore and Oral (Ash) Sylvester in Bethel, MN. He was baptized into the Christian faith on July 15, 1919 in Minneapolis and later confirmed on May 31, 1936 in Sioux Valley, MN. He married Erna Will on November 21st 1945. He later married Lorraine Klug on July 17, 1992 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Frank served his country during WWII from 1941-1945 in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His oversea service included service in the European theater and four major battle campaigns. Frank earned the title of Master Sergeant. He also served with the Oklahoma Air National Guard. After his time of service, Frank worked as an Aircraft Mechanic. He worked for the Chickasha Flying Service, Chickasha, OK., Ross Aviation, Fort Still, OK., and the Federal Aviation Administration in Oklahoma City where he eventually retired as a Leadman in 1981.
His hobby was playing the accordion where he played with the Masopust Polka Band for several years entertaining many local nursing homes in Oklahoma and Minnesota. Frank was a past member and elder of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City, and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming. Frank is survived by his children Lynda (L.J.) Gleason, Slidell, LA; Theodore (Jewell) Sylvester, Mt. Home, MO.; his step-children Carol Klug, Waite Park; Sandra (Philip) Maus, St. Joseph; Nancy (Andrew) Schmidt, Staples; Tom (Liz) Klug, Haslet, TX.; his daughter-in-law Sandra Sylvester, Oklahoma City; his brother Robert (Betty) Sylvester, Granite Shoals, TX.; his 17 grand and stepgrandchildren and 11 great-and step-greatgrandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Oral and Theodore Sylvester, his first wife Erna Sylvester, his son Donald Sylvester, his second wife Lorraine Klug-Sylvester, his brother Louis Sylvester, and sister Florence Smith.

Robert V. Holmen, family patriarch, and lifelong resident of Upsala, MN, peacefully passed on September 19th, 2013, surrounded by family. This grand man rejoins his beloved wife Marlee, his parents Olga and Julius, and siblings Lloyd, Alverna, Don, Alton, and Ardyce. His spirit continues on through his 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren (and one on the way!) Bob lived 89 rich years. He was a farmboy, born October 28, 1923; and grew to be a rakishly handsome backwoods huntsman and trapper. He proudly served as a “Tin Can Sailor” in WWII, being present in Tokyo Harbor at the signing of the Peace Treaty. Back home in 1947, he married the love of his life, the stunningly beautiful and intelligent Marilyn O. Lofquist. He was a devoted son, husband, father, uncle, friend, neighbor, businessman, community leader, naturalist, jokester, and storyteller. He was a gutter-of-bear with a teeny pocket knife; an innovating Renaissance man; and a cunning card-player. He was a man of example, true to his word, a student of life. He was a hunting buddy, a traveler, a bird-watcher, a diligent letter-writer and a 70-year-old waterskiier. All told, he initiated hundreds in the joys of waterskiing on Cedar Lake! He was a great flirt, a hiker-of-mountains, a whisker rub giver, golfer and the best brother-in-law ever. He was a jogger before anyone knew why the hell anyone would run all over town; he had

He was the heartbroken caretaker of Marlee at the end of her life, offering, at her deathbed, the meal blessing prayer “Come Lord Jesus, be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed”. (So we sent him off with the same one.) Uffda. Many, many family and friends say goodbye to Bob and his exuberant life. Our lives have been amply blessed by his innumerable gifts to us! Thomas Mackie Latzka was born March 10, 1995 in Waseca, Minnesota. Tommy graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 2013 and was currently attending Ridgewater College in Willmar. He was working at Meyer Dairy this summer before attending college. Tommy was a wrestling fanatic who wrestled for the Sauk Centre-Melrose Wrestling Team and was going to wrestle for Ridgewater College.

Dave “Hubby” Blenker A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held after 5PM Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Paul’s Paradise (the former Blenker Hardware Store) in Albany for Dave “Hubby” Blenker, who died Friday at the Albany Area Hospital. David was born October 2, 1946 in St. Cloud to William and Valeria (Cremers) Blenker. He grew up and graduated from Albany High School class of 1964 where he played quarterback on the football team. He married Mary Jo Hull on July 28, 1979. He had his only son, Josh, on April 30, 1985. David owned and operated Blenker Hardware in Albany for many years. Cloud. He was President of the Albany Golf Club where he was an avid golfer. Dave was also a great fan of all sports. He was a diehard Oakland Raiders fan. David is survived by his mother of Albany; his son, Josh Blenker of Saint Augusta; sisters, Jean (Earl) Pundsack of Albany, Diane (Loren) Schiffler of Avon; brother in law, Gary Andvik of Albany and many nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father; wife, Mary Jo and sister, Carol Andvik.

The debt has been sold several times, and now the amount they’re asking for is over $1,000. I’d like to work something out, but how do I know the collection company that is calling me now is legitimate? -Lorenzo Dear Lorenzo, It’s normal for a debt this old to have been sold a few times. My guess is the company that’s calling you is legit, and they probably bought the debt for pennies on the dollar. Whatever you do, don’t set up a payment arrangement. They’re asking for over $1,000 because they’ve added stuff like late charges and interest. Let’s go back to the original amount of $400 and see if they’ll accept a one-time, cash payment to settle things. Make sure you get it in writing if they accept and don’t give them a dime until after you get the written agreement. Then, once you have the agreement, send them $400. Do not, under any circumstances, give them electronic access to your checking account. You’ve waited a long time to take care of this, and in the process you’ve made things more difficult. I’m glad you’ve decided to clean up your mess, though. Late is better than never, Lorenzo. Just remember, you’re still responsible for debts you incur—even if the company you originally borrowed from has sold it to someone else! -Dave

I don’t want anyone walking around without health insurance. But I’m not talking about the Affordable Care Act and all the other mandated crap the government is trying to shove down our throats. I’m talking about a solid health insurance plan along with having some money saved. Do this first thenyou can have all the philosophical discussions you want about whether or not you’re supposed to pay for someone else’s healthcare and upkeep. At the end of the day, it’s absolutely vital that you have your own health insurance. Youth 15 and younger no longer need free small game license
With many small game seasons open and pheasant season soon to open, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding hunters that youth age 15 or younger no longer need a free license to hunt small game. In recent years, youth age 15 and under were able to hunt for free but were required to have a complimentary license in their possession. “This hunting season it’s very simple for kids 15 and younger,” said Jay Johnson, DNR hunting recruitment and retention supervisor. “They can hunt grouse,
squirrels, ducks, pheasant and rabbits without any license or stamps.” Johnson said youth hunters still need to comply with firearms safety certification and other requirements. Free and reduced price licenses are one of the tools the DNR is using to encourage youth to experience and continue hunting, he said. Youth 13 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Grouse season opened Saturday, Sept. 14. Waterfowl season opened Saturday, Sept. 21. Pheasant season opens Saturday, Oct. 12.

She was a member of the Junior High Girls Basketball program and plans to play for the Lady Bulldogs this winter. She also plays softball, participating since eighth grade with plans to go out again this spring. She has been in the band since fifth grade. Her advice to other students is to “Strive to do your best at everything.” Outside of school Kiley sings in her church choir, participates in youth group and plays JO Volleyball. On Friday evening, 8-24-2013, at approximately 9:44 p.m., the MN State Patrol and the Todd County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene of a pedestrian that had been struck by a motor vehicle on Hwy. 71, just north of the Stearns, Todd County line. Eric J. Raisanen, (40 YOA) had been a passenger on a motorcycle that was northbound on Hwy. 71 when he fell off the motorcycle in the northbound lane. Another northbound vehicle then struck Raisanen. The vehicle that struck Raisanen then fled from the scene. There have been some leads in the case that have been investigated and unsubstantiated to this point. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol are urging anyone with information to contact either agency. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office can be contacted toll free at (800) 794-5733. It was a crowded Sunday morning worship service when the pastor reminded his congregation of the church prayer meeting. Unfortunately, only two members came: the pastor and the threehundred pound church janitor. The next Sunday the pastor informed his flock that there was a “large and enthusiastic crowd” at prayer meeting. The janitor became upset and accused the pastor of lying. “But,” protested the pastor, “I did not lie.
