The Power of Negative Thinking -By Harvey Mackay
From the beginning we are taught by our parents what NOT to do. Don’t cross the street without looking. Don’t go to bed without brushing your teeth. Don’t talk back. Don’t get in trouble. And on and on. S i m i l a r l y, from an early age we are told by our moms, “Don’t worry, honey. Everything will be all right.” Or “Let me kiss it and make it well.” From infancy up we’re inundated with platitudes that may provide short-term diversion but don’t work in the long run. One of my favorite books, Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking,” a classic bestseller, inspired an optimistic perspective for millions of Americans. I was deeply honored when Dr. Peale wrote an endorsement for my
first book, “Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.” Now Bob Knight, the legendary college basketball coach, has written an inspirational and entertaining rebuttal, explaining why negative thinking will actually produce more positive results, in sports and in daily life. His new book is titled, “The Power of Negative Thinking.” Known for his fiery temperament, Coach Knight feels that most basketball games are not won, they are lost. That’s why his coaching philosophy is to instill discipline by preparing to win, rather than hoping to win. Preparation keeps you from beating yourself. In his locker rooms he posted a sign that read, “Victory favors the team making the fewest mistakes.” He writes about the value of watching game film with his team to pinpoint mistakes “and especially patterns of mistakes so they don’t occur again.” A coach is always teaching. He talks about free-throw shooting, which was typically a strength of a Bob Knight-

coached team. He says many players struggle making free throws when the game is on the line. One of the reasons is the pressure. He explains that it’s really tough to simulate game conditions like that, so he would stop practice and pick a player to shoot two free throws. If he made both of them, they would go on with practice or practice would be over, but if he missed, it meant running. This exercise helped players focus more at crunch time. Coach Knight stresses the value of teamwork in having winning teams. He considered it his most important job as a coach to let every player know when he made a contribution to winning, no matter their role. And when his teams did win, he made sure they didn’t dwell on their success, but rather looked immediately to the challenges of the next game. He applies this lesson to business strategy as well. “The Power of Negative Thinking” is punctuated with humorous stories. For example, when Coach Knight was about to take the court to coach his first game at Army, he thought the team should say a prayer in the locker room, like most of his prior coaches had done. As he was walking out to the court, an old trainer put his arm around his neck and said, “Son, for what it’s worth, you and prayer are not a good mix.” Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I said to a player: ‘What is there about the word no that you don’t understand? What is there about the word don’t that you don’t understand?’ “Don’t and can’t are obviously negative phrases, but putting the words into use can bring very positive results.” He points out that seven of the Ten Commandments start with “Thou shalt not …” He even developed his own Ten Commandments, including: • Don’t accept the status quo. Obituaries Robert F. “Robbie” Hinnenkamp R o b e r t F. “Robbie” Hinnenkamp, age 89 of Melrose, died Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the CentraCare Hospital in M e l r o s e , Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Robert Frank Hinnenkamp was born August 1, 1924 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ben, Jr. and Mary (Angelbeck) Hinnenkamp. Robert was raised on a farm north of Melrose where he continued to live and raise his family marrying Lorraine Van Beck in 1947. He retired from farming unofficially in 1980 when he and Lorraine moved into Melrose, until her death in 1993. In recent years, Robert enjoyed fishing with family and friends, playing many hands of Solo, and driving
tractor at the farm. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Survivors include his sons, Duane (Bernita) Hinnenkamp of Melrose and Donald (Donna Jansen) Hinnenkamp of Melrose; son-in-law, Gene (Sue) Lieser of Circle Pines; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Colette Von Wahlde of Melrose, Irma Otte of Sauk Centre, and Bernadine Winter of Greenwald. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Hinnenkamp on January 9, 1993; parents; daughter, Diane Lieser; brothers and sisters, Theckla Blenker, Clarence Hinnenkamp, Ludwina Brake, Isadore Hinnenkamp, Herbert Hinnenkamp, and Ben Hinnenkamp. Serving as casket bearers were Brent Lieser, Gina Lieser, Brandon Hinnenkamp, Jon Hinnenkamp, Nicole Jansen-Hinnenkamp, and Isaak JansenHinnenkamp. Cross bearer was Eugene Lieser and scripture bearer was Sue Lieser. Honorary bearers were Robbie’s card club members, friends, and neighbors. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Joan C. Schneeweis, age 79 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Joan Cecilia Muenzer was born November 7, 1933 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Albert and Emily (Pogatchnik) Muenzer. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University. She was united in marriage to James Schneeweis on June 5, 1957 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Joan was employed by District 740 in Melrose where she was a teacher and community education director for 38 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s

lifelong resident of Melrose. Porky hauled milk for Dierk’s Dairy for a number of years. He also worked at Kraft until a fire destroyed the business. He then worked in the shipping department at Jennie-O until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Porky enjoyed attending high school sporting events, especially when his granddaughters were participating. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and attending amateur baseball games. Survivors include his children, Jeff (Sharon) Wessel of Melrose and Lynn Reller (fiancé, Brad Luhman) of Melrose; four grandchildren, Mindy Wessel, Abby Wessel, Tayler Reller, and Torri Reller; and many loving relatives and friends. The problem is I’ve had several health issues lately, and we’ve diverted a lot of money we’d put into saving and investing toward medical bills. We also have two kids in high school who want to go to college. Do you think we should cash out the IRA to help send our boys to school? --Jeff Dear Jeff, You guys make $100,000, and expenses at a good in-state school would be roughly $17,000 a year. If I were you, I’d trim the household budget and make the kids get to work. Look around and see what you can sell, too. There’s no reason you all can’t pull together and cash flow an education for these guys. Providing an education for your kids is a noble pursuit, but you’re low on money right now because of health problems and medical bills. You didn’t do anything wrong to create this scenario. It was just a case of life happening. So, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to sit down with your kids and say, “Okay, serious talk time. You guys know what’s happened recently, so if you want to go to college, you need find a good, affordable institution and start applying for every available scholarship. You also need to plan on working after school and on weekends—now and when you’re off at college—and saving money like crazy. Your mom and I will help out some, but we all have to pull together to make this happen.” There’s a better way to do this than borrowing money and going into debt. There will be times when it’s not easy, but walking around with student loans hanging over your head—or nothing set aside for retirement—is no fun, either!

If you listen to me on the radio, I’m sure you’ve already heard me say what I’m about to say now—sell the car! That will get rid of almost half her debt, then find her a little $2,000 beater to drive until she can save up for a better car. Remember this simple rule: Never buy a car that costs more than half of your annual income. Also, never go into debt to buy a car. Automobiles go down in value like a rock, and you never want that much money wrapped up in something that’s depreciating. We also have an income issue here. Your mom has to do something in the short term to get her income up and pay off debt. A part-time job nights and weekends would be a really good idea. Then, she needs to address her long-term situation with an eye toward a decent job. Local counties set to receive storm aid By Rep. Paul Anderson Three area counties are among those set to receive portions of a $4.7 million storm-relief package approved during a one-day special legislative session Monday. In all, $4.5 million in funding will assist 18 counties which suffered storm damage in June. Another $219,000 was appropriated for two other counties in southwestern Minnesota hit by an ice storm last April. The relief aid will be used to help offset the cost of cleanup and infrastructure repair, estimated statewide to be $18 million. The state is covering 25 percent of that total and will receive a 75-percent match from the
federal government. Most of the June storm damage took place in western, central and southern portions of the state. The three counties included in Rep. Paul Anderson’s District 12B all are set to receive storm aid. Storm damage estimates are $155,441 for Douglas, $275,344 for Pope and $551, 583 for Stearns. “Counties in our part of the state were hit hard by storms and the costs of repairing the infrastructure would really harm the bottom line for many local governments without this aid,” said Anderson, R-Starbuck. “I am pleased we came together in bipartisan fashion to provide help with the recovery.”

Helping Hands Outreach news By Linda Breth Helping Hands Outreach of Stearns County, located in Holdingford, was awarded $52,310 over two years to expand to East Brockway, making homemaker, chore, transportation and caregiver support services available to 453 older adults who are at risk for long-term nursing home care and spending down their assets to be eligible for Medical Assistance. Organizations that help older Minnesotans stay in their homes as they age are receiving more than $4.3 million in funds from the Department of Human Services. Among the projects being funded through the department grants are those that provide home modifications, home care, adult day care, grocery delivery,
homemaker and chore services, support for informal caregivers and other services that allow older Minnesotans and other adults to remain in their homes rather than move to nursing homes or other more expensive living arrangements. “Helping people stay in their homes and communities as they age is a major focus for the department,” said Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson. “Partnering with community health care organizations allows us to do an even better job serving Minnesotans who need assistance.”

A closer look at one particular tax increase With this week’s special legislative session in St. Paul there is much discussion about taxes and the impact they have on the state. That impact is usually measured in dollars as tax revenue is what provides Minnesota with the money needed to provide services and, in general, operate state government. But, the impact of tax policy also filters down to people because it affects all of us in different ways. A good example of this is the recently increased tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products in Minnesota. In effect since July 1, the state tax on a pack of cigarettes was raised $1.60 to bring the total tax bill on a carton to $33.23.

Granted, one can argue about the virtues of smoking, and the health care costs to society caused by the addiction. That’s not the issue here, because smoking is still legal, and it’s a practice still done by about 20 percent of our population. The state is more than willing to take the money raised by taxing cigarettes, but raising the tax so high will probably cause some to quit the habit. Paying nearly $73 dollars for a carton of smokes is beyond the budget of many who currently light up. I have long said that one of the principles of sound tax policy is keeping our state competitive with its neighbors. This new tax on tobacco takes us in a different direction and makes Minnesota totally uncompetitive in regard to the price of cigarettes. Again, one may think that’s a good thing, but I’m looking at the situation from a tax revenue and comparison standpoint. With our new tax, the price of a carton of smokes in our state is around $73. Just across the border in North Dakota, the price for that same carton is around $43, which is a huge difference. Do you think someone who usually stops at a convenience store in Moorhead, for example, to pick up his morning cup of coffee, a fill of gas, and his daily pack of cigarettes will continue doing so? He or she will probably drive across the bridge

and buy all three of those items in Fargo. The C-store in Minnesota lost, not only the sale of the cigarettes, but also the fill of gas and the cup of coffee. That’s what is happening in border towns all across Minnesota. And it’s not just North Dakota, although northwestern Minnesota represents the largest price discrepancy. On average, the price of a carton of cigarettes in South Dakota is about $17 less than in Minnesota, about $20 less in Iowa, and $7 less in Wisconsin. I think it’s safe to say that our state will not take in the amount of revenue forecast when this tax increase went into effect. To be sure, part of the reason will be that some smokers either quit the habit or cut back. But the biggest reason will be that folks along our borders will drive to neighboring states to pick up their smokes, and just may bring back an extra carton or two for their friends. I talked with officials of an area tobacco wholesaler who does business in Minnesota and North Dakota. In the seven weeks since July 1 when the tax increase went into effect, their sales to retail establishments in Minnesota have declined by roughly 20 percent. On the other hand, sales to retail stores in eastern North Dakota have gone up by a whopping 50 percent! We are not only losing revenue to neighboring states but, because of this dramatic tax disparity, we may be seeing stores along our borders closing their doors because of an over-all loss of business. Rep. Ron Kresha (09B) - Legislative Update I wanted to send you a quick update on a recent special session that took place in Saint Paul. Morrison County is among the 18 counties that will receive portions of the $4.5 million dollars appropriated today by the legislature as disaster relief for the storms that hit the state in June 2013 causing the largest power outage in state history, along with millions of dollars in damages across the state. The legislature has a long tradition of coming together to provide relief to our cities and counties when they are hit by severe weather. It was great to see such strong bipartisan cooperation and support for this critical disaster relief. The bill passed 127-1, with all Republicans voting in support of the bill. Unfortunately, there was no agreement made to repeal any of the taxes passed in May. There’s support on both sides of the aisle for the repeal of many of these damaging increases that are causing harm to Greater Minnesota, but those will have to be topics for the legislature to consider when we return in February 2014. USS Minnesota Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, attended the commissioning of the USS Minnesota last weekend, joining 24 lawmakers, and dozens more state and federal elected officials, military members, and private citizens from Minnesota in attendance to witness the commissioning of the USS Minnesota in Norfolk,
Virginia, which took place on Saturday, September 7th. The USS Minnesota is the Navy’s newest fast-attack submarine, and is now in use at Naval Station Norfolk as of September 7th. The USS Minnesota features a crew of 135 sailors, and is hailed as the most advanced warship ever to enter active service, able to sustain submerged speeds of more than 25 knots (30 miles per hour). The ship weighs more than 7,800 tons, is 377 feet long, and can stay submerged for up to three months at a time. The commissioning ceremony featured remarks from Senators Franken and Klobuchar, Congresswoman Betty McCollum, and a myriad of distinguished military officers to mark this historic occasion for the state of Minnesota. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, and Tim Grittner. Absent: Jim Molitor. Also present: Mike

Julie Zupco, city insurance agent, was present to explain to the council the city building replacement values. Zupko will meet with the city maintenance man and review the city’s property to get dimensions and take pictures of the property. MN Power has removed and replaced the light pole on DeGraff Avenue from the west side of the road to the east side. Mayor Peterson informed the council that there will be a Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 8:00pm. Jim Piekarski and Mayor Peterson serve on this board. With the absence of Piekarski, Mayor Peterson made a motion to appoint AJ Johnson as board member. Tim Grittner seconded the motion, motion carried. Council will meet at 7:30pm in the Swanville Center and then move to the fire hall. The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve the claims. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Families, youth and women can go afield with upland bird mentors in October
Inexperienced families, women and youth hunters are reminded to apply by Sept. 16 for a chance to step into the field with an experienced upland bird hunter at locations across much of Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 19, or Saturday, Oct. 26. “Participants are offered a hands-on approach that shows them hunting techniques, outdoor skills, safety and how wildlife habitat plays a big part in upland bird management and hunter success,” said Mike Kurre, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) mentoring program coordinator. Co-sponsored by the DNR, hunt participants are paired with mentors from Pheasants Forever, Woodcock Minnesota and the Ruffed Grouse Society. After discussing safety, habitat, ethics, scouting for places to hunt and securing landowner permission when necessary, mentors take participants into the field. A limited number of family hunts allow all family members to participate. For youth hunts, parents or guardians must accompany youth hunters at all

DNR predicts ‘brilliant’ fall colors season During the next seven or eight weeks, waves of fall color will roll across Minnesota’s forests and prairies, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Division encourages families to get out and enjoy them. The statewide fall color report at www.mndnr.gov (www.dnr.state.mn.us/ fall_colors/index.html) is updated every Thursday by staff at Minnesota state parks and recreation areas. These reports include percent of color change, peak color projections and three state park or trail destinations considered “hot picks” of the week. “We’re predicting it will be a brilliant fall color season,” said Patricia Arndt, communications and outreach manager for the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. “Although it’s been dry lately, the trees got adequate rain earlier this season. Now we just need a combination of sunny days and cool nights in the weeks ahead to bring out the fall colors. We’ve timed many of our fall hiking, biking, geocaching and paddling programs at Minnesota state parks and trails to coincide with peak color, and we hope to see lots of people getting outdoors to enjoy this beautiful time of year.” Colors typically peak between midSeptember and early October in northern third of the state, between late September and early October in central third and between late September and midOctober in southern third (which includes Twin Cities). The new training option includes a virtual field day that emphasizes responsible gun handling and hunting safety. Mike Hammer, DNR Enforcement education program coordinator. Minnesota and Iowa are the first states to offer this option for adults. The online course takes about nine hours to complete and is interactive with narration, quizzes and final exam. Both the main course and field day include a virtual range where students can shoot various firearms and action types at a variety of targets and distances.
