Lessons learned from animals: Part 2 -By Harvey Mackay
About a month ago my column featured useful lessons learned from animals. It certainly touched a nerve, as I received tremendous response from people who told me about what they had learned from their dogs, cats and pets of all descriptions. Over the years I’ve used a lot of animal analogies because 1) life lessons come from many sources, and 2) you don’t have to name names. Here is round two. Personal growth: The Japanese carp is commonly known as the koi. If you keep it in a small fish bowl, it will only grow to be two or three inches long. Place the koi in a larger tank or small pond and it will reach six to 10 inches. Put it in a large pond and it may
get as long as a foot and a half. And when placed in a huge lake where it can really stretch out, it has the potential to reach sizes up to three feet. The size of the fish is in direct relation to the size of the pond. Relate that growth to people. Our growth is determined by the size of our world – not the earth’s measurable dimensions, but the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical opportunities we expose ourselves to. Lesson: Unless we expand who we are, we’ll never have more than what we have now. Teamwork vs. ego: The danger of excessive pride or an excessive ego is evident in the story of the hitchhiking frog. A frog asked two geese to take him south with them. At first they resisted; they didn’t see how it could be done. But the frog suggested that the two geese hold a stick in their beaks which
he could hold on to with his mouth. So off they flew. People marveled at this demonstration of creative teamwork. That is, until someone asked: “Who was so clever to discover such a fine way to travel?” Whereupon the frog opened his mouth and said, “It was I,” and plummeted to the earth. Lesson: If you want to take the credit, you also have to take the lumps. Inability to let go: An expedition of scientists was on a mission to capture a particular species of monkeys in the jungles of Africa. It was important that the monkeys be brought back alive and Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Using their knowledge of monkey behavior, the scientists devised a trap consisting of a small jar with a long, narrow neck with a handful of nuts placed inside. Several of these jars were staked out, while the scientists returned to their camp, confident of catching the monkeys. Scenting the nuts in the bottle, a monkey would thrust his paw into the long neck of the jar and take a fistful of nuts. But when he tried to withdraw the prize, he discovered that his clenched fist would not pass through the narrow neck of the bottle. So he was trapped in the anchored bottle, unable to escape with his treasure, and yet unwilling to let it go. When the scientists returned, they easily took the monkeys captive. Lesson: Sometimes letting go means a much greater gain. Competitiveness: Have you noticed how many dead squirrels you see on the roadside in summer and how few you see during the winter? In summer, nuts are plentiful, and it’s easy for even the slowest squirrel to survive. The squirrels get fat and lazy and cars pick them off one by one. In winter, things are just the opposite. Nuts are few and far between and they must hustle to survive. The fat and lazy squirrels have all gone to their maker. The survivors are sleek, fast, and smart. Few cars catch them unaware. Lesson: Businesses that become complacent and stop trying their hardest leave themselves vulnerable to business predators that soon put an end to their well being. Danger of Greed: An old method

of catching wild turkeys can be an excellent lesson to all of us. To trap the turkeys, corn was scattered on the ground. Then a net was stretched about two feet high over the grain. When the wild turkeys sensed that no human was near, they would approach the corn and lower their heads to eat it. When they became full and tried to leave, they lifted their heads and were immediately caught in the net. Lesson: Don’t fall into the trap of something for nothing. Obituaries Jerome A. “Jerry” Sand
Jerome A. “Jerry” Sand, age 79 of Freeport, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, September 25, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Jerome Alphonse Sand was born September 26, 1934 in New Munich, Minnesota to Leo and Catherine (Thull) Sand. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. Jerry married the love of his life, Donna Winning on July 1, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He farmed south of Albany until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed playing his guitar, listening to music, dancing, watching baseball, farming, and John Deere tractors. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will always remember his beautiful smile and joyous laughter when they would come to visit. Jerry was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the American Legion Post 101.
Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Donna Sand of Freeport; children, Tim (Sharon) Sand of Albany, Dan (Merci) Sand of Browerville, Patty (Doochie) Salzl of St. Martin, Kathy (Gary) Vouk of St. Joseph, Annette (Clayton) Stanlake of St. Cloud, Mike (Chrystal) Sand of New Munich, and Henry (Char) Sand of Melrose; 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Joan, Maynerd, Bert, Marlene, Sylvie, Flo, and Jean. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Catherine Sand; parents-inlaw, Richard and Marie Winning; daughters, Nancy, Margaret Ann, and Sandra Ann; grandson, Shawn Salzl; brothers, Eddie, Vern, and Ervin; sisters, Lucille and Pauline. Serving as casket bearers were Steven Sand, Matthew Sand, Jason Sand, Jeff Salzl, Bradley Holmquist, Nathan Sand, Travis Sand, Neil Osendorf, and Devin Sand. Cross bearer was Jessica Sand and scripture bearer was Lindsay Sand. Mass servers were Kyrsten Salzl, Brittany Sand and , and Tanner Sand. Gift bearers were Kloey Sand, Spencer Sand, and Ethan Sand. Alphonse “Al” Schmiesing Alphonse “Al” Schmiesing, age 91 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, September 29, 2014 at his home in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 4 at St. John the Baptist Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Alphonse Nick Schmiesing was born May 5, 1923 on the family farm in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Theresa (Petermeier) Schmiesing. Al attended country school through the eighth grade. He was united in marriage to Hildegard “Hilda” Schoenborn on June 21, 1949 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Minnesota. radar instructor. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Gurney, on June 28, 1947. He attended the University of MN and Macalester College on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor’s degree in science and education. In 1950 he accepted a teaching position at Holdingford High School. After earning a master’s degree in school administration, he became the principal, retiring in 1980. It was under his leadership that the current high school was built in Holdingford in 1972. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, camping and travel. He was a Helping Hands volunteer for many years. He loved building and flying model airplanes, and spent many hours rebuilding them after numerous crashes. For 20 years Ed and Dorothy traveled to Mexico where they supported an orphanage and brought supplies and clothing to girls’ schools in Guadalajara. Ed is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 67 years, his daughter Barbara Pladson (Paul), Ann Lowe (John Falconer), and Pat Hintz (Greg), 6 grandchildren and 7 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Thomas and Robert, and his son, Thomas.

Al was preceded in death by his son, David Schmiesing; parents; brothers and sisters, Ann Schmiesing, Agnes Meyer, Henry Schmiesing, Alvina Zenzen, Clara Clobes, Alma Meyer, and Ervin Schmiesing. Serving as casket bearers will be James Meyer, Neil Meyer, Danny Meyer, Daryl Zenzen, Arthur Schoenborn, Jr., and Brian Schoenborn. Lorraine C. Boeckers, age 84 of New Munich, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 4 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Ronald Dockendorf concelebrating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in New Munich. St. Anne’s Christian Women will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Lorraine Catherine Boeckers was born October 12, 1929 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Peter and Walburga (Rueter) Hoeschen. On May 24, 1949 she married Arnold Boeckers at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. She was a generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend
to many. The fruits of her kindness and generosity will remain with us forever and she will occupy a special place in all our hearts always. Lorraine took great pleasure in sharing in the company of others and was devoted to her family. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and the St. Anne’s Christian Women. Survivors include her children, Carol Schneider of St. Cloud, Judy (Dave) Nelson of Monticello, Joe Boeckers of Upsala, Jim (Diane) Boeckers of New Munich, Irene (Don) Lieser of Meire Grove, Marilyn (John) McDonald of Richland, WA, and Lois (Tim) Matti of Blaine; total of 49 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth Studer of Albany and Edna Boeckermann of Upsala. Lorriane was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold Boeckers on March 14, 2002; daughter, Sandy Boeckers; son, Marvin Boeckers; and brothers, Ben Hoeschen and Claude Hoeschen. Serving as casket bearers will be her children, Lois Matti, Marilyn McDonald, Judy Nelson, Joe Boeckers, Jim Boeckers, and Irene Lieser. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marie K. “Tootie” Pueringer, age 94, of Holdingford, was held Monday, September 29, 2014 at Church of All Saints–St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Marie passed away Thursday, September 25 at her home in Albany. Burial took place in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery in Holdingford. Marie was born January 31, 1920 in St. Joseph, MN to Frank and Mary (Lenzen) Danzl. She married Frank S. Pueringer on October 25, 1945 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph. They lived and farmed in the Holdingford area from 1947-1975. They moved near St. Francis for 20 years and returned to Holdingford in 1998. She was an active member of All Saints–St. Mary’s Parish, Christian Women, Rosary Sodality and funeral
lunch committee. Marie enjoyed bird watching, sewing, quilting, crafts, cooking for her family and playing 500. She will also be remembered for helping make over 1400 rosaries for the Mission in Nicaragua. Marie is survived by her children Robert (Donna) of Holdingford, Elizabeth “Betty” of Albany and Alan “Pebble” (Lynne) of Holdingford, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Frank (2010), brothers Peter, Al, Fred, Victor, Willard and Lee Danzl and sisters Lucetta Zimmer, Gertrude Kapsner and Margie Broker.

Rose Marie Hiltner, age 85 of Freeport, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at her home in Freeport, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Goldenaires Senior Citizens, Christian Mothers, National Catholic Society of Foresters, and Daughters of Isabella will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5 p.m. and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Auxiliary and the Albany American Legion Auxiliary at 6 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Rose Marie Moening was born December 12, 1928 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Margaret (Meyer) Moening. Henry and Margaret divorced and Rosie was taken in by J.C. and Rose Meyer at the age of nine months. She attended school at St. Boniface in Melrose, St. Francis High School in Little Falls, and Holy Name Academy in Seattle, Washington. Rosie then worked at Rhodes Department Store and National Bank of Commerce in Seattle, Washington. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Hiltner on December 9, 1946 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. In 1974, the couple owned and operated Hiltner and Company in Freeport. They retired in 1999 and passed on the business to their son, Tom.
Rosie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Goldenaires Senior Citizens, Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, Young at Hearts, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary in Melrose and the Albany American Legion Auxiliary Unit 482. She was president of the National Catholic Society of Foresters Holy Rosary Court 532 of Freeport. Rosie enjoyed quilting and activities at the Senior Center in Freeport. Survivors include her children, John (Terry) Hiltner of Hickory Hills, Illinois, Judy (Dave) Stueve of Albany, Robert (Marlene) Hiltner of Foxboro, Wisconsin, Katie (Steven) Peschel of Victoria, Louie Hiltner of Wayzata, Darlene (Dennis) Gruenke of Kerrick, and Tom (Pat) Hiltner of Freeport; daughters-inlaw, Rita Hiltner of Blaine and Amy Hiltner of Richmond; 20 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hiltner on March 6, 1993; parents; sons, Daniel Hiltner and Paul Hiltner; and great-grandson, Brady Joseph Hiltner. Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Can you explain the “asset allocation” theory when it comes to investing? -Matthew Dear Matthew, The asset allocation theory is one touted by lots of people in the financial community. It’s also a theory with
which I disagree. In short, the asset allocation theory means that you invest aggressively while you’re young. Then as you get older, you move toward less aggressive funds. If you follow this theory to the letter, you’re left pretty much with money markets and bonds by the time you’re 65. The reason I don’t believe in this theory is simple. It doesn’t work. If you live to age 65 and are in good health, there’s a high statistical likelihood that you’ll make it to 95. The average age of death for males in this country is now 76, but that includes infant mortality and teenage deaths. So, a healthy 65-yearold man in America can look at having another quarter century on earth. If you

Thought for Transportation funding a topic of discussion the week: prior to 2015 session
A series of meetings to draw attention to Minnesota’s transportation needs is being held around the state. One such gathering was held in Willmar last week and was attended mainly by local highway officials and contractors, along with several legislators and candidates. The district engineer for MnDOT spoke to the group about needs in the area, and other speakers discussed topics ranging from completion of the Highway 23 project to county roads and public transit. It’s expected that increasing state funding for transportation will be a major focus of next year’s legislative session. Last raised in 2008, Minnesota’s gas tax currently stands at 28.5 cents per gallon and will be the focus of attention for raising additional revenue. Another method mentioned at the meeting was a dedicated sales tax on the price of motor fuel to be implemented at the wholesale level. For example, a 5 percent tax on the wholesale price of gasoline which was,

for example $3 per gallon, would raise an additional 15 cents. That cost would eventually get passed on to consumers as retailers could not be expected to absorb an increase that large. This method of raising revenue would also make the tax subject to inflation as it would increase as the price of fuel went up. There are many details to consider before the gas tax is raised or before any new gross receipts sales tax would be signed into law. They include how the formula would split any new revenue between the metro area and out-state, along with the split between funding for transit (which includes light rail and buses) and actual road projects. Expect this to be one of the first major topics to be considered when the Legislature convenes again in January. With the beautiful fall weather experienced last week, crop maturity advanced greatly and fall harvest is underway. Chopping corn for silage was occurring in many locations as choppers made their way through fields either pulling boxes or loading semi-trucks following alongside. It’s still wet in some areas as I noticed tractors stationed in some fields ready to hook on to trucks

Driving to Elrosa for a church dinner one evening, we noticed tractors on top of a huge silage pile, working with lights on, driving back and forth packing down the silage. Soybean harvest is also underway as the above-normal temps last week quickly dried down the plants. Fields that only days earlier were turning color from green to light brown were now dropping leaves as a signal that they were ripe. I took out my first field over the weekend and it was about as expected. The low spots were good but the beans on the hills and clay knobs showed signs of the mid-summer dry spell and were short. I visited with one farmer near Sauk Centre who reported hail hitting his crops twice this summer. That’s never a good thing, although he thought the corn suffered less damage than his beans. Be careful on the roads as farmers are busy gathering in the fall harvest. Equipment is large and slow-moving so give them plenty of space when either meeting or passing. Rep. “Life is not fair,” some claim. When they try to place the events of life on a balance sheet, the total seems to be much larger on the negative side of the ledger. They prove their point: Life is indeed unfair. And if we stop reading Psalm 23 at the end of verse four, it seems that the struggles of life end in victory with no celebration. The battle is over and we sit silently in comfort and security - but alone. Not so! Our Shepherd becomes a Host and we are seated at a lavishly set table with an abundance of food. After a successful battle in the days of David, the victor would be seated in a banquet hall as the ones he defeated stood and watched as he dined before them. They would watch but not enjoy. They were the losers and could not enter into the joy of victory. So our Lord will one day seat us in the presence of those who would have destroyed us. Not only is there the celebration of a feast that signifies victory, but the honor of being anointed with “oil” - the sign of a true celebration. Then we read that our “cup” will be overflowing - a picture of the goodness and grace of God - that demonstrates Him giving the very best to His child whom He bought at a great price. In the New Testament, the banquet table is a sign of salvation. We conclude this Psalm with a vision of being seated at a banquet with our Savior and Shepherd. A banquet where we will celebrate the joy of our salvation and being with Him forever.

Todd County 4-H Northeast Livestock Show Results
The 80th Northeast 4-H Livestock Show was held in Brainerd, September 13-14. The Northeast 4-H Livestock Show plays host to the cream of the crop livestock in the Northeast Region. This year 283 youth participated from 17 counties. To participate in the show 4-H’ers must have received a blue ribbon at their county fair to be eligible to compete in this two-day show. The first day of the show focuses on educational opportunities for youth to participate in relating to the species of animal they are interested in. The second day of the show highlights the 4-H’ers and their livestock in the specie shows. Todd County was represented at this show by 27 4-H members.
