Want an edge in business? Study the Trust Edge
By Harvey Mackay “Trust flows from individuals, not organizations.” That’s the best summary I can provide of David Horsager’s hot new book, “The Trust Edge - How Top Leaders Gain Faster Results, Deeper Relationships, and a Stronger Bottom Line.” Why is this book so valuable? The topic couldn’t be more timely. In my opinion, the most important five-letter word in the English language is spelled T-R-U-S-T. It’s so critical, publisher Simon and Schuster’s Free Press has made it their leading business book this fall, with a publish date of Oct. 9. Want another reason why I think it’s so important? I know Dave Horsager, and I trust him! He is the perfect author for a book on this topic. He has been studying the topic for ten years, and we can all benefit from his research. Let me give you a sample of his wisdom: “Trust defined - Trust is the confident belief in an entity: • To do what is right • To deliver what is promised, • To be the same every time, regardless of circumstances.” I can’t imagine a person staying in business very long without trust from every angle. Your customers have to be able to trust you. Your employees must
trust you. Your vendors must trust you. Even your competitors must trust you. It’s that simple. If any of those relationships break down, close your doors and find another way to make a living. Horsager says, “Without trust, the transactions cannot occur. Without trust, influence is destroyed. Without trust, leaders lose teams. Without trust, organizations lose productivity, relationships, reputation, talent retention, customer loyalty, creativity, morale, revenue, and results.” As he was studying top organizations and leaders, Dave discovered that some had a clear advantage over others. “Those leaders or organizations that could weather storms, charge higher prices, maintain respect with customers and clients, and foster long-term growth were special,” Horsager writes. “The greatest leaders and organizations of all time have had the same competitive edge. They were trusted.” He confirms what I have learned over my decades in business: trust doesn’t happen overnight. “While it may appear to be static, trust is more like a forest - a long time growing, but easily burned down with a touch of carelessness,” he says. How many times have we seen once-powerful, successful companies felled by business decisions that caused any of their constituencies to lose trust? Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros. come to mind. Investors and employees trusted them - and we know what happened next. Several years back I wrote about a study by Forum Corporation, which
Horsager also cites as evidence of the importance of trust. Using hundreds of salespeople from eleven companies in five different industries, the investigators found that the unique trait of top producers was honesty - not charisma, ability or knowledge. For as long as I have been in business, I have believed that the most charming, most educated, most technically astute sales and business people will be abject failures unless all those traits are wrapped in honesty. When we trust people, we are optimistic not only that they are competent to do what we trust them to do, but also that they are committed to doing it. They will be totally honest with a customer even when it is difficult or potentially costly. Their reputations are more important than any deal. Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Obituaries Sandee E. Loven
Sandee E. Loven, 69 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial for Sandee Loven was held Monday at 10:30 AM at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville with Rev. Ron Dockendorf and Rev. Tony Kroll officiating. Burial was in Springbrook Cemetery near Swanville. Sandee (Tabatt) Loven was born on January 19, 1943 in Duluth, Minnesota to Charles and Agnes (Klosner) Tabatt, the second of eight children. Sandee grew up in Little Falls and Brainerd. She attended grade school at St. Mary’s Elementary in Little Falls and Little Falls High School graduating with the class of 1961. After graduation, Sandee worked for Loretta’s Dress Shop in Little Falls until November of 1966. On Thanksgiving day November 24th, 1966, she married Royal Loven at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Little Falls. Along with being a full time home maker and “mom”, Sandee did the scheduling and
June R. Wenker book keeping for Loven’s Photography from 1970 until 1983. In 1983, Sandee and Royal took over Loven’s Auto Center, and Sandee became the book keeper for that business, which she continued to do until June of 2012. Sandee loved to read, but her greatest love was her family, friends, and especially her grandchildren. Her grandchildren knew all they had to do was ask grandma, and she would do it. Whether it was riding a “stick” pony down thru town or to volunteer in the Swanville Elementary Kindergarten class where she was known as “Grandma Sandee.” She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Royal; sons, Kyle (Kari) Loven of Rogers, MN, and Jay (Heidi Jo) Loven of Swanville, MN; grandchildren, Lexi, Kelsey, Carter and Kam; parents, Charles and Aggie Tabatt; sister Audrey (George) Newman, Wendy (Rich) Waltman, Gwen (Bill) Mauer, Michelle (Steve) Duncan; sisters in law, Bunny (Lee) Tabatt, and Amber Brown; father in law, Ray Loven; along with many nieces and nephews. Sandee was preceded in death by her brothers Lee Tabatt and Chucky Tabatt, her sister Luella Leblanc, and mother in law Dee Loven. Arrangements were with the ShelleyGibson Funeral Chapel in Swanville.
Charles “Charlie” Zeimetz The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Charles “Charlie” Zeimetz, age 59, of Avon, was held, Monday, October 15th, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Burial followed in the parish cemetery. Charlie passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Charlie (Charles) Zeimetz was born November 30, 1952 to Mike and Marie (Herwers) Zeimetz in St. Cloud. He served

his country 2 years in the Marine Corps and 2 years in the Army. He spent his later years working at the Avon/Albany rest area and farming on his hobby farm. He lived life his way; there was the right way, wrong way and Charlie’s way. He may have been rough around the edges but once you got past it he was sarcastically funny, loved his family and always made sure no one was hungry and thirsty when visiting. Upon retirement, they spent 20 years wintering in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and traveling the central United States and Canada. June was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101. She was an avid card player and especially loved playing Bridge. Survivors include her husband, Max Wenker of Melrose; sons, John Wenker of Minneapolis, Stephen Wenker of Malibu, California, David Wenker of Woodland Hills, California, and M.J. (Paula) Wenker of Hastings; grandchildren, Ben, Allison, and Charles Wenker; and brother, Jack (Jan) Kramer of Thief River Falls. June was preceded in death by her parents. Bertha Bain
in marriage to Warren ‘Jack’ Bain on July 16, 1946 in Little Falls, MN. After their marriage, Bertha worked for Herb Nelson Grocery Store in Swanville that is now Bob and Frans. The couple also farmed in Culdrum Township until 1973, when Jack’s health declined. The couple then moved to Swanville. Jack passed away on July 13, 1989. Bertha moved to St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls in February, 2009. She enjoyed fishing and gardening. She was a very kind, sweet lady who always greeted you with a smile. Bertha was a faithful member of the Swanville Bible Church. Bertha Bain is survived by her brothers, Joseph Vavra of Belvedere, IL and Harvey ‘Elizabeth’ Vavra of Rockford, IL; sisters, Clara Vavra of Rockford, IL and Helen Vavra of South Beloit, IL; brother in law, Owen Brown of South Beloit, IL and nieces and nephews. After graduating, she worked at Gillette State Hospital for crippled children. She later took personal care of several cancer patients. David is survived by his brother Andrew (Jonnie) Konsor Jr., Holdingford; nine nieces and nephews; many greatnieces and great-nephews; and many cousins. R o b e r t Oslund, 83 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away We d n e s d a y, October 10, 2012 at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services were held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Burial took place in Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. Robert was born on June 26, 1929 at home in rural Swanville, MN to the late Willie and Anna (Beseman) Oslund. He grew up and attended school in Swanville, MN. Bob was united in marriage to Margaret Rooney on February 26, 1965 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. He made his home in Swanville and worked for 55 years at Swanville Co-op Creamery and Produce. Bob served on the Swanville Area Fire Department for many years which 25 of those years he was the Fire Chief. He
was also a very active Swanville First Responder. In his free time Bob enjoyed wood crafting, making furniture and many lawn decorations. Bob also enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, and was a very talented water skier in his younger years. He spent as much time as he was able, at his lake cabin on Mons Lake west of Swanville. Bob loved watching the beauty of nature, especially the many birds that were around his homes that he kept well fed. His family was very important to him and he always loved and looked forward to their company. He was a life long member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Bob was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Bob is survived by wife Margaret of Swanville, MN; children, Robert ‘Bob’ (Colleen) Oslund of Monticello, MN, James ‘Jim’ (Ronda) Oslund of Jamestown, ND, Douglas (Amy) Oslund of White Bear Lake, MN, and Judy Oslund of Elk River, MN; sister, Janette (John) Albaugh of Burtrum, MN; and 8 grandchildren. Kruzel, age 80, of Long Prairie, who passed away on Sunday at Long Prairie Centra Care Health System after a long battle with Alzheimers. Rev. Friends and relatives may call on Thursday evening from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie and also one hour prior to services at the church on Friday morning. The rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and parish prayers will be at 7:00 p.m. Virginia “Jean” was born on July 4, 1932 in Bowlus, MN to Bernard and Theresa (Masog) Dombovy. Jean’s father passed away due to a farming accident and her mother was remarried to Jerome Burggraff. Jean married Joseph Kruzel on June 4, 1951 in Royalton, MN at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was a cook, most recently for the Long Prairie Centra Care Health System. Jean also worked at the Hub Supper Club and in the Grey Eagle and Long Prairie Schools. She and Joe were chaperones for the Long Prairie High School Marching Band, traveling to California, Hawaii and many other places. Jean was known to all of the students as “Ma Kruzel”. She was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. Jean was also involved in
Christian Mothers. She loved gardening, baking, especially coffee cake, and being with family. She had an extensive collection of owl trinkets. Jean will be missed by all who knew her and will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend. Obituary Rodney Adolph
Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Rodney Adolph, age 70 of Holdingford, will be 12:00 PM Saturday, October 20, at All Saints, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Rodney died Sunday morning at the St. Cloud Hospital after a battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 4-9:00 PM Friday and again after 10:00 AM Saturday at the Miller-Carlin-Brenny Funeral Home in Holdingford. Parish prayers will be at 7:00 PM Friday at the funeral home. Rodney was born August 13, 1942 in St. Cloud to Ferdinand and Ethel (Curtis) Adolph. He grew up in Eden Valley and moved with his family to a farm near Holdingford in 1959. Rodney married Cathy Fink on May 4, 1964 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. Rodney worked in the creamery in Freeport and then the creamery in Opole, before he started working as a heavy equipment operator for Martin Fruth, Inc. and then Niehaus Road Construction.
In 1980, he purchased the Roy Brenny Oil Company and changed its name to the Adolph Oil Company. In 1985, he expanded his business by purchasing the Stroeing Oil Company in Freeport. He sold his business in 2004. Rodney also worked for the Brenny Ambulance Service in Holdingford, and started with the Stanley Brenny Funeral Home in 1964, the Brenny Funeral Homes of Albany and Holdingford, and currently the Miller-Carlin-Brenny Funeral Homes. He was active in the Holdingford Fire Department, the Holdingford Rescue Squad, he drove bus for the Holdingford Schools, he worked in the maintenance department for the City of Holdingford, he was active in his church, All Saints, St. Mary’s, where he was an Usher, Greeter, Parish Council member and did maintenance. Rodney was also a former member of the Holdingford Commercial Club. He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels. Rodney is survived by his wife, Cathy Adolph, Holdingford; his sister, Bonnie (John) Woitalla, St. Anna, his brother-in-law, Robert Stoermann, Holdingford; sister-inlaw, Louise Adolph, Holdingford; brother-inlaw, Dan (Dianna Vossen) Fink, Monticello; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Rodney is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Larry Adolph and sister-in-law, Sylvia Stoermann.

Upsala Parent and Teacher Conference Conferences for both Upsala High School and Elementary will be held Monday, Oct. 22 and Thursday, Oct. 25 from 3:30-7:30 p.m. For Elementary conferencing period, we have assigned parents, Kdg-gr 4 students, to a 15 minute conference period for each of their Elementary School students. 5-6 grade unscheduled conferences will be held in their homeroom so parents can see teachers: Mark Herbes, Jim Drill & Linda Piasecki. While I’m drifting in slumberland, packs of demented, vengeful wild varmints assemble in one corner of my backyard. They’re having military strategic arms talks. In my little world, there is no racism or prejudice. All God’s creatures band together as one … one voice, one species, one purpose. Which is to systematically destroy me. My little beasts spend their lives plotting. And in return, so do I. It’s MY land, I tell you! It’s MINE!!!! Sorry. I’m getting a little carried away. I don’t get much sleep in the fall, so I’m a tad more insane than usual. Let’s start with everybody’s favorite. The raccoon. My little masked monster has the cloned brain of Stephen Hawking. He can not only figure out the combination of every lock I’ve had welded (WELDED! Did you read that?) to our garbage can, he can open it, get what he wants, close the lid and re-set the lock to

a new combination so I can’t open it the next morning. I hear him giggling at dawn. Now, I want to explain something so that every nerdy (oops) wildlife specialist doesn’t hate me. I don’t want to kill the bands of animal swat teams surrounding my house. My goal is much more environmentally friendly and sound. I want to get back at them. And I will spend all the money and time it takes to do it. We have snapping turtles. You won’t read about them in any pretty tourist guidebook. You know why? You think they’re called that because they’re in bad moods and get a little snappy? No. These prehistoric looking things are over a foot long, and if you go anywhere near their head, they spin at lightning speed and snap even faster than lightning. We have one in our yard who’s a dear little being, soft and warm as a summer’s day. He likes to lurk. So I have to get on my hands and knees every time I approach our car, which is his favorite lurking spot.

If he’s under there, I coo softly, “Here, little sweet turtle.” Then the gargantuan reptile does what turtles do best. Nothing. Every day my husband, Bob, takes a big shovel and gently coaxes the turtle out from under the car. This only takes the better part of TWO hours. Please excuse all my capital letters. I’m not myself. It’s that rotten Screech Owl’s fault. He keeps me up all night. He does this on purpose. Hour after hour, I fling open the bedroom window and yell, “Stuff a sock in it, you lousy owl!” Last night, my neighbor called the police. Many years ago, I tried luring Purple Martins to our yard. It cost me $357 dollars to do this. As a gift for Bob, I sent

seventy-five thousand screws. Bob did not like this gift. But he was gracious and put it together, which took six years. With excited expectations, we raised the beautiful bird house high above our backyard pond. Within an hour, a common house sparrow began nesting in it. By the next morning, her nest was complete. Then I did what any selfish egocentric human would do. I took it out. But I knew she had worked hard on it, so I carefully placed it in the tree next to the bird house. By evening, that nest had been moved. Where was it? Back in the Martin house. I was angry at the bird and unwilling to spend a fortune on a fancy mansion for sparrows. She and I went back and forth for three days. But twig by twig, she repeatedly replaced the nest back into the Martin house. Eventually, I realized this: Momma Sparrow worked hard enough to deserve a $357 home, and that is what she would

52nd Anniversary Upsala Elementary Book Fair Oct. 21-27 The 52nd Annual Upsala Elementary Book Fair kicks off Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1:00- 3 p.m. with a grand opening including door prizes and a visit from Geronimo Stilton. Enter through the east elementary door in the circle parking area. Upsala’s book fair has achieved astounding success in recent years and now hosts a fair with well over $60,000 in product to sell. The fair will again be held in the Cora Eckstrom Media Center of Upsala Elementary School. Upsala 6th graders have set $5,000.00 as their goal with funds raised supporting the class field trip and the Upsala Elementary Library. Special events have been planned for this year’s fair. Kids Invite Someone Special on Saturday (KISSS) will take place Saturday, Oct. 27. Upsala kids
invite a loved one to bring them to the fair to pick out special books and gifts to purchase. Secondly, drawings for book fair gift certificates will take place during the grand opening, the two conference nights and during KISSS. Ignorance is NOT Bliss -By Sheila Ripplinger
Many of us are familiar with the statement, ‘What you don’t know won’t hurt you!’ Or the similar statement, ‘Ignorance is bliss!’ Although they may be true pertaining to some things, for the most part they are false. It seems as though many who profess to be Christians are ignorant to ‘Truth’ because they choose not to know what God says in His Word. Could it be that there is an innate fear of knowing it? That perhaps our blissful sinfulness that we enjoy would have to stop if we really knew the truth and took it to heart? Do we have a fear of that truth hurting us and spoiling our fun in the world? Romans 1:18-32 spells it out very clearly that ignorance to God and His provisions are not bliss- that we are without excuse! In fact, the wrath of God at this moment is being revealed against the wickedness of men- in the world in which we live. Romans 1:25 says ‘they’ exchanged the truth of God for a lie. ‘They’ in these verses are referring to the people who claim to know God! ‘They’ did not think it was worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so He ‘gave them over’ to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. Jesus came to live among us, suffer and die on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead to free us and give us victory over death; He paid the debt that we owed. If we truly believe this and

profess Christianity because of this belief, we will be hungering and thirsting for righteousness, and desiring to know God’s will and His ways through His Word, the Bible. If we claim God as our Heavenly Father through our faith in Jesus Christ, we should be setting our sites on our heavenly home, and not the idols and lusts that this world is offering us. It should bring us grief and shame when we misrepresent and dishonor the Name of our Lord by our sinful actions and attitudes. When we stand before the Judge of our souls on that soon coming Day, ignorance will not be an acceptable excuse! What we deliberately chose Not to know, may indeed hurt us. Ephesians 4:17&18: So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.

Marriage Ammendment
By Peter Heidgerken I have read many articles on the pros & cons about the amendment. As a catholic, we received a letter stating why we should be in favor of a constitutional amendment in keeping a marriage between a man and wife the letter was from Bishop John Kenny. What bothers me why do most democrats oppose the amendment and republicans favor marriage between a man and wife. I know President Barack Hussain Obama came out in favor of Gay Marriage so did Governor Dayton. Was it because he wanted the gay vote? So what are the benefits of Gay Marriage? Do they want to raise children like married couples? I have no problem with Gays they can have their Unions. Why married? Because they want the same benefits as married couples. To have children but how? Two women I suppose you can find a man or go to sperm bank. No Father? Two men Adopt? No Mother? What Next? Now here is the real problem. If this amendment gets passed, In school or anytime in public, you will be called be Co-parents. Not mother and father. If you don’t believe me, check what happened in Canada which had a similar bill passed. You cannot say father and mother in school. You must say Co-parents. What Next?
When you go vote think about that. Marriage is between a man and a wife. To raise children and be called family; not Co-parents.
Townhall Meetings
By Patricia Seifert In the last couple of weeks I have had the opportunity to attend a couple of Townhall meetings, one at the Grey Eagle City Hall and one at the Long Prairie City Hall. I appreciated the three gentleman, Senator Paul Gazelka, House 9A Candidate Mark Anderson and House 9B Candidate Ron Kresha taking the time to come and discuss issues and concerns with the people at the meetings. It was a time to ask questions and voice opinions and get to know a little about the people running to represent Todd County at the State legislature. I am just sorry that more people did not take some time to meet and talk with these men.
