Goldie Hawn inspires the next generation -By Harvey Mackay
When the phone rings, and the caller is asking for a couple hours of your time to help with a worthy cause, you have two obvious responses: yes or no. Unless that call is from the Arizona Foundation for Women, a remarkable organization that helps women overcome obstacles, find safe sanctuary, job training and employment and to empower them to say, “Yes I can!” Of course, I was delighted to answer the call to act as emcee at the AFW’s annual Sandra Day O’Connor Luncheon, which was a sold-out event for nearly 900 guests. The foundation honors three people each year for their contributions to the welfare of women and children. This year’s Lifetime Achievement honoree was Goldie Hawn, a perfect choice. I’ve long admired Ms. Hawn as an Academy Award winning actress, producer and director. I was less familiar with her work at the Hawn Foundation, which Goldie established to support research into developing ways of helping

children become healthy and eager learners. The more I heard, the more I realized that this foundation may be Goldie’s best work yet! After her acceptance speech I was lucky enough to interview her for nearly a half hour about her fascinating projects. She was thought-provoking, content-rich and hilarious. Her foundation has developed a school curriculum, MindUP, which teaches children vital social and emotional skills that empower them to manage and reduce their own stress, helping them to be happy. The evidence-based program, which is now taught in schools across five continents, combines neuroscience, positive psychology, and social and emotional learning, in tandem with mindfulness. The result is young people who are living smarter, healthier and happier lives. Among the lessons that enhance learning, children are encouraged to: • Learn how their brains react to emotions. • Take daily “brain breaks” and focus on breathing. • Practice mindful sensing - exploring sight, taste, smell, hearing and motion. • Consider the differences between optimism and pessimism. • Learn to savor happiness. • Learn perspective and how to view differing results. • Focus on compassion and empathy. • Discover the importance of generosity and a sense of social responsibility. • Perform random acts of kindness. • Engage in practical problem-solving and critical thinking. Does this sound like a program that should be limited to children? I certainly don’t think so! She explains this whole concept in
her new book, “10 Mindful Minutes,” which I highly recommend. As Goldie says, “What I do know is that MindUP works for children, so its principles can work for parents too.” I would extend that to all adults, including those who don’t have kids. Mindfulness, she says, is “the conscious awareness of our current thoughts, feelings, and surroundings - and accepting this awareness with openness and curiosity in a non-judgmental way. It means focusing on non-doing, a crucial skill in these distracted times. It is more important than ever to teach ourselves and our children how to concentrate, so that we’ll become aware when we’ve lost focus and be able to maintain our attention for longer periods of time.” This differs from thinking, in which she says “we often judge each moment in what has been or what could be.” Goldie concludes her book with a “toolbox” for living a more mindful life. The helpful lists and gentle lessons make her program much easier to follow and implement. She encourages readers to find ten mindful minutes each day “to help reduce stress, renew your mind for clearer thinking, and create greater focus and connectivity with your children.” What impressed me most about Goldie’s book were the personal reflections that are sprinkled throughout. Obituaries James G. “Jim” Anderson
James G. “Jim” Anderson, age 86 of Grey Eagle, died Friday, June 7, 2013 at his home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre following the lunch. Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk. James Gustav Anderson was born November 2, 1926 in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Godfrey and Grace (Lockead) Anderson. He was united in marriage to Angeline Van Heel on October 13, 1953 at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Angie and Jim purchased and operated a dairy farm in Round Prairie Township, near Grey Eagle. They operated the farm for 40 years and retired from farming in October of 1993. Jim was drafted to the Army in 1955. After Jim’s discharge, they continued to operate the dairy farm. Jim and Angie retired from farming and moved to Birchdale Township near Ward Springs. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk, the Purple Martin Conservation
Association, Lake Region Saddle Club in Alexandria, Birch Lake Riders in Grey Eagle, North Central Morgan Association in Minneapolis, and Todd County NFO. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed maple syrup making, gardening, woodworking, building customized purple martin houses, bird watching, horse shows and trail rides. Jim is survived by his children, Kathleen (David) Steinbach of New Rockford, North Dakota, Steven (Sue) Anderson of Farwell, Allan (Mary Robinson) of Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Nancy (Gene) Klingberg of Hoffman; three grandsons, Billy Steinbach, Garrett and Justin Haley; step-grandson, Jason Gylsen; step-great-grandchildren, Darrian Peterson, Robb and Jayden Gylsen; and brother, John (Della) Anderson of Elk River. He was in preceded in death by his wife, Angeline Anderson on December 9, 2011; parents, Godfrey and Grace Anderson; grandson, Bobby Gylsen; nephew, Randy Anderson; and greatnephew, Ryan Anderson. Serving as casket bearers were Garrett Haley, Justin Haley, Marty Anderson, Forrest Reichel, Gordon Van Heel, and Sherry Anderson. Cross bearer was Billy Steinbach and scripture bearer was Alice Molitor. Gift bearers were Jayden Gylsen, Robbie Gylsen, and Darrian Peterson. Honorary bearers were Rudy Pastain and the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Alois J. “Al” Wiechman, age 89 of St. Rosa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at his home in St. Rosa, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 10 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Alois Joseph Wiechman was born November 14, 1923 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Anna (Herkenhoff) Wiechman. On May 4, 1948 he married Rose Westendorf at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Al farmed on the family farm east of St. Rosa until his retirement in 1980. Al enjoyed using a team of horses for farming and always liked having a team on hand. Al’s faith was very important to him. He prayed the rosary daily and enjoyed going to Mass. He also enjoyed playing cards, going on walks, reading, and loved spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, Knights of Columbus Council #1633, Holy Name Society, and St. Rose Catholic United Financial. Elmer G. Frericks
Elmer G. Frericks, age 89 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Elmer Gerhard Frericks was born September 1, 1923 in Freeport, Minnesota to Herman and Walburga (Beste) Frericks. On June 30, 1947 he married Marcella Hellermann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed north of Melrose until moving to town in 1975. Elmer worked for the Melrose Locker Plant for eight years and also was employed by Mayers, Inc. for 18 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Society, and was on the Township Board for 30 years. Elmer enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and watching the Minnesota Twins. He loved visiting with his family and
cherished his visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his children, Vern (Doreen) Frericks of Melrose, Jim (Carol) Frericks of Melrose, Ron (Doris) Frericks of Grey Eagle, Judy (Baylen) Becker of Albany, Jan (Alvin) Dierkhising of Long Prairie, Marlene (Gene) Blommel of Freeport, and Donna (Lester) Sand of Freeport; daughter-in-law, Lois Frericks of Melrose; 28 grandchildren and 43 greatgrandchildren; brother and sisters, Esther Hinnenkamp of Sauk Centre, Alma Schulte of Freeport, Ervin Frericks of Minneapolis, and Louise (Don) Haskamp of Blaine; and many loving relatives and friends. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella Frericks on January 21, 2012; infant son, Thomas Frericks; son, Robert Frericks; grandsons, Robert and Matthew Becker; brothers, Ambrose Frericks, Ray Frericks, Roman Frericks, Jerome Frericks; and sisters, Marie Zwilling and Florence Austing. Serving as casket bearers were Lois Frericks, Ross Frericks, Vern Frericks, Doreen Frericks, Jim Frericks, Carol Frericks, Ron Frericks, Doris Frericks. Cross bearer was Darin Blommel and scripture bearer was Loren Frericks. Arrangements were made by PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services, Melrose.

I thought it would be appropriate to blend the two Holidays together since my dad was a Military man and a great dad. Lately I am realizing more and more how fortunate we are as Americans to still be able to stand strong for what we believe in. My dad’s love for this Country was quite obvious in his life- from the American Flag that he flew so proudly to his love for Eagles and what they stood for; God’s majestic presence and watch over His children. Recently, my son and I, along with other loved ones, were privileged to stand by this man’s side, holding his hands, as we witnessed him go peacefully from this life in to Eternal Freedom. We will forever cherish that difficult but wonderful moment of letting him go.

The hospital room that he was moved to later that day just happened to have an awesome view of the American Flag waving away in the wind! Thank you dad for teaching your family that it is indeed ‘In God We Trust’. And thank you God, our Father in Heaven, for sending us your Son Jesus, to shed His blood for us sinners so that we could know the Truth and be set Free! Mary Eleanor Headley Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Mary Eleanor Headley, age 94 of Holdingford will be 11 AM Thursday, June 13th 2013 at the Church of All Saints-St. Mary, Holdingford. Father Gregory Mastey will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Mary died peacefully in her home Monday evening. There will be a visitation for Mary from 10AM until the time of the service Thursday morning at the church. Mary was born August 16th 1918 to Patrick J. and Mary (Durkin) Casey in Little Falls, MN. She married Elting “Bud” Headley on October 8th, 1941 in Elmdale. After marriage the couple lived in Swanville and Upsala where together they raised their eight children. They eventually settled in Holdingford where they owned and operated Headley Hardware in town. Mary eventually retired in 1984. She greatly enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, playing cards, gardening, and traveling. Mary and Bud spent nearly 30 years wintering in Texas. Most of all she loved spending time with the family and her grandchildren. Mary was a member of the Christian Mothers and a member of the

The caller advised that the party needed to go to Walmart and apply for some sort of card to claim his winnings. The Swanville Elementary Knowledge Bowl team taking first place this spring was the “Seven Muskateers!” Team members (from left) Rebekah Muhlenkamp, Kennedy Allen, Jaqueline Pachen-Klemish, Avery Jackson, Hailee Schmidt, Connor Throener and John Muhlenkamp battled it out for several weeks this spring and came out on top against 3 other Swanville teams. First grader, Stella Hagen was “Caught Being Good” this past year at Swanville Elementary! Her name was in the box along with 144 other names of Swanville students caught doing something good for others! During the year, staff members were asked to recognize students when they did something nice. Each month one winner was drawn to choose a book and all names throughout the year were placed in a box. Dairy Farmers celebrate Feeding Our Thought for Nation during June Dairy Month ek:
Dairy farmers take pride in their role in producing wholesome, nutritious dairy foods and in helping to feed the nation. During June Dairy Month, Midwest Dairy Association, which works on behalf of more than 9,500 dairy farm families across 10 Midwest states, has partnered with Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity, to help fight hunger. Starting on June 3, Midwest Dairy will donate $1 for every view to its Feedin’ A Nation parody video up to $20,000. For each $1 raised, eight meals are secured by Feeding America on behalf of local food banks. According to the USDA, more than one in five children in this country may not know where they will find their next meal. Food insecurity and child obesity often go hand-in-hand. For many children, food insecurity and obesity stem from disrupted meal patterns, family stress and lack of access especially during summer months without school meals. Low-fat dairy products are also highly valued commodities within our network of food banks.” On a national level, National Dairy Council, Feeding America and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formed a partnership in 2012 to help alleviate hunger through an increased focus on nutrition. During the Washington Post Live Future of Food event last month, the three partners reaffirmed that commitment by announcing a $100,000 grant program to support nutrition education and increase access to dairy and other nutrient-rich foods. Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township May 28, 2013 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held May 28, 2013 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Ervin Muellner and Erv Herdering. Correspondence included notices of Region 5 survey, county planning update meeting and a notice that the county board approved the Pillsbury Bridge replacement. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of April 30, 2013. Motion seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 4801 through 4813: Rev. $883.25, R&B $8,855.86. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motions passed. After reviewing the bids Sup. Berscheit made a motion to accept the bid from Ervin Muellner
for ditch mowing and brush cutting. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. In the road report the road inspection list from May 8, 2013 was reviewed and Sup. Johnson made a motion to install a culvert in 341st Ave south of the intersection of 160th St. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motion passed. The board approved doing additional dust control spraying on 331st and Cranberry Road, adding crushed concrete to the public access at Bass Lake, class 5 gravel at Buck Lake access and widen the oil spray on Explorer Drive. Dust control will be sprayed when the weather allows. Township clean up day was Saturday, May 25 and approximately 1 ½ dumpsters were filled. The board will consider doing clean up day only every other year. The Long Lake Association asked the board about putting benches near the public access. The board approved the idea with the hope that the public would use the quality benches near the lake. Weed inspection should take
place later in June. The supervisors divided up the township to do inspections and information on additional weeds to look for was handed out. Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $178,231.92 before tonight’s bills. Treasurer’s report accepted on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on June 25, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center. These are unofficial minutes. This was then tabled until the next meeting. The Planning Commission at Todd County sent a notice of an ordinance revision that is to rewrite the section on Sewage Treatment Standards to meet the new state standards. The board felt it was not necessary to attend as Todd County does the septic permits. Having received a letter of resignation from Bev Eggerth, Ray then made a motion to accept the resignation. Mike made the second. All in favor, Approved. A public hearing will now need to be scheduled to decide the future of planning and zoning in Grey Eagle Township. The public hearing is set for July 1st, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the township hall. Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for May. Claims list included 9 claims for a total of $4,956.10. Mike made the motion to approve the claims. Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of April 30, 2013: $182,601.38; Checks cleared 19: $7,850.07; Deposits including interest: $2,024.70; Balance as of May 31, 2013: $176,776.01; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $176,776.01; CD Balance: $102,713.89. Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported he had picked up the signs, and installed the minimum maintenance sign. He recommended the board put in a culvert on 337th and Ascot. The culvert near Determan’s is plugged and Ray suggested trapping the beavers and having Erv H. clean out the culvert. Cozy Cove road needs some work on the banks as it washes out almost every year. Trygg Hanson was not able to attend the meeting and will be on July agenda. One quote for ditch mowing was received, however the board felt it should be advertised first before deciding on who will get the job. Discussion on the disking that was done on shoulders of the roads; was thrown back into the
ditches and the grader was driving too fast to do a good job. Additional agenda items: Beach maintenance quotes were discussed and the board decided to take the lower bid for $ 630.00 for the season. Ray made the motion and Mike made the second, all in favor. Motion carried. Discussion was held on adopting a township policy for handling complaints to the township. The resolution states that all complaints must be signed before the township will address them. Ray made the motion to adopt the resolution; Mike made

Public Comment: Erv H. joined the meeting and the board restated the issues with the disking of the shoulders and 2 issues that residents had with last year’s dust control. Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month Pulse on People
The Upsala School staff is proud to honor Garrett Wolf as Upsala School’s May Senior High Student of the Month. Garrett is the twelfth grade son of Dan and Angie Wolf. Garrett is an active member of his school and community. His favorite class this year was engineering because of all the “new things and building” they did. Curtis Robertson, Garrett’s engineering teacher, said, “Garrett is a model student to have in class through his inquisitive mind, his strong desire to improve his work, and also a strong drive
to become a better person. It has been a great pleasure having Garrett in class.” Since elementary school Garrett has participated in basketball and football, earning many awards and much recognition. Upon entering senior high, Garrett joined choir and his local youth group. He has also been a regular honor roll recipient. When Garrett isn’t busy with school and community activities, he occupies his time with four-wheeling, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and playing sports. Now that Garrett has graduated, he would like to tell other students to “live your high school moments to the best you can. Cherish every moment you can. Live life happy with no regrets.” Garrett has plans to attend St. Cloud Technical College to complete his generals. His intention is to transfer to a 4-year school to study law enforcement.

Sam is the son of Randy and Margaret Mettler and is a freshman. Sam is a very active young man, participating in football, basketball, track, speech and theater since seventh grade. He was on Student Council as a seventh grader and was just recently elected to serve on Student Council as the tenth grade representative. He is in band and has earned two Solo Ensemble certificates. Sam plays piano in church and also sings in the choir. He helps with the Saturday basketball program. He is an active 4H member and has gone to the State Fair multiple times for Entomology.
