Making your goals means making a plan
Okay, all you golfers-ever played a skins game? In simple terms: players during a round of golf wager on the best score for a single hole. If there’s a tie, the “pot” rolls over to the next hole. One result of a skins game can be to up the ante on each hole. The backlash is taking your eye off the long haul. In a skins game, you play for short-term stakes. As a result, strategy goes out the window. Unfortunately, some people run their businesses that way. They muddle along in a never-ending skins game. This doesn’t just happen in tiny companies. An insider at a famous blue-chip giant once quipped: “Our idea of long-term planning here is deciding what we’ll do after lunch.” Anyone who has participated in a skins game on a golf course knows the painstaking attention paid to the line

It’s a lot like what Peter Drucker describes as “the last of the deadly sins” of business, which he defines as “feeding problems and starving opportunities.” Peter Drucker has long been considered the definitive authority on business planning. His principles are still widely used decades after his revolutionary writing on the concept of “Management by Objectives.” Drucker sorted out a baffling world. Planning boils down to two fundamental processes: goals and objectives. It is important to distinguish between the two. Goals are considered the purely quantitative and mostly financial targets. Objectives are more qualitative and elusive. Make your goals, and you stay in business. Advance your objectives and you build a business worth having. The distinction between goals and objectives is hardly pure. Often objectives have quantitative measures attached to them as well. But they are rarely just numerical yardsticks. At the age of 85, Drucker wrote Managing in a Time of Great Change. A key premise: “Uncertainty - in the economy, society, politics - has become so great as to render futile, if not counterproductive, the kind of planning most companies still practice: forecasting based on probabilities.” Translation: Things no longer rest on a predictable base. How would I describe this sort of uncertainty? We live in a world where: “Computers make very fast, very accurate mistakes.” And, “Artificial intelligence usually beats real stupidity.” Companies spend days, if not weeks, agonizing over their mission statement and business plan. How much precious, misspent time goes into the process? Get

the business model right. Then accessorize it with the details. You may not need more than a few action plans focused on very restricted areas. In real estate, it’s location, location, location. In management, it’s preparation, preparation, preparation. But, be very, very careful. It’s not the sheer magnitude of the preparation that matters. It’s the relevance of what you do. Is it clear? Will it change behavior? Does it sizzle? Business can take some lessons on preparation from world class athletes. For a recent seminar on goals and planning, I invited Peter Vidmar to be my guest. Peter is the highest scoring American gymnast in Olympic history and was the star of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He captained the USA men’s gymnastics team to its first ever Olympic gold. He is now chairman of the board of USA Gymnastics and a broadcast commentator. Peter understands goal-setting in a very tangible way. Preparing for the Olympics is a life quest for these athletes. I think goals need to be measured and clearly defined. They also need to be time sensitive. You should give yourself deadlines. “I think a goal should answer some questions,” he continued. “In other words, be specific. It should answer ‘what’ what is it that you want to accomplish? It should answer ‘why’ - why is it important to you? It should answer ‘when’ - when are you going to get this done by? It should certainly answer ‘how’ - how are you going to do it? Make sure your goals

Svihel, age 81, of St. Cloud and formerly of Avon, who passed away on July 2, 2012 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta. Reverend Blane Wasnie, OSB will officiate. Entombment will take place in the parish cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the Daniel Funeral Home in ST. Cloud. Margaret was a devoted mother and wife, raising six children while supporting her husband with the operation of Granite Electronics. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. Margaret liked flower gardening, baking pies, bowling, antiquing and going to auctions. She loved family reunions and bringing her famous barbequed ribs. Margaret also enjoyed working at the church bazaar with her husband. She especially treasured the time spent with her family and husband at their lake home in Avon. Marvel held several jobs during her working life but ended her career working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Inspection area in Minneapolis beginning as a general clerk in data entry and ending as an office manager responsible for computer entry and inspection information reports. Marvel was an expert seamstress and she enjoyed beading, canning, cooking, crocheting, fishing, gardening, reading, and quilting. She loved to travel and enjoyed many winters in Apache Junction, AZ. F u n e r a l s e r v i c e s celebrating the life of James “Jim” Raymond Lemke, age 65 of Avon will be 11AM, Friday July 6th, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Farming. Pastor Frederick Kutter will officiate and burial will take place in the church cemetery following the service. Jim died suddenly and unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at his home in Avon. There will be a visitation from 4-8 PM, Thursday, July 5th, 2012 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany and again from 10 AM until the time of the service Friday morning at the church. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany. Jim was born May 9th 1947 in Avon to John and Hildegard (Arceneau) Lemke. He lived his entire life in Avon. Marvel died on June 29, 2012 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids. Burial will be at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont, MN. Marvel was born April 8, 1923, in Rutland Township/Martin County MN to Hallie & Maude (Mason) Bullard. She attended Granada, MN, schools and graduated from Granada High School in 1940. Marvel married Gordon W. Decker on November 23, 1942, in Miami, FL. where they lived until his discharge from the U.S. Army. They moved to Minneapolis, MN and she lived there until September, 1986. Most of all, Jim loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. He was also a member of the Avon Legion and Immanuel Lutheran Church of Farming. Jim is survived by his ex-wife Carolyn Lemke, Avon; Tammy (Craig) Sexton, Rice; Angie (Randy) Petermeier, Rice; his grandchildren Ryan and Olivia Osterman, Kyle Petermeier, and Cailee and Burke Sexton; and his siblings Carl (Marianne) Lemke, Albany; Kevin (Marlene) Lemke, Avon; Luella (Kenny) Lehner, Winsted; Betty (David) Klug; Carol (Lloyd) Brix, Cuyuna; Stella Bredeck, St. Cloud; Susie (Jerry) Funk, Grey Eagle; Annie (Joe) Funk, Albany. A spaghetti dinner fund-raiser was held on May 5, 2012 at the American Legion in Long Prairie for Benjamin Poegel, son of Joe Poegel and Carol Kenyon of Swanville. Benjamin was born on March 30, 2012 with a heart defect. He has undergone several surgeries to correct the problem. The fund-raiser raised $4,023 which included $500 in supplemental dollars from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. His treatments have been going well, but he is not expected be able to go back to work for at least a year. Conservation Corner Update
By Rhonda R. Friese Bears, bears, bears... we’ve got them! Todd County’s bear population has been steadily increasing. Unseasonably warm weather rousted them early, before natural food sources could provide for them. Hungry bears have been searching back yards throughout the state, and Todd County is no exception. There have been nuisance bear complaints in Moran, Turtle Creek, and Grey Eagle Townships, so far. Bears have been sited throughout the county. We suggest people remove sources of temptation to encourage nuisance bears to move on and prevent other bears from coming around. On average, bears will move on within 10-14 days after food sources have been removed. They have a phenomenal sense of smell and “follow their nose” to locate goodies. “Buttoning up” around your yard will also reduce chances of other unwelcome guests (skunks, raccoons, opossums) moving in. With the strong bear population we have, I would suggest all Todd County residents follow these guidelines, even if they haven’t had problems... yet. If you have a nuisance problem, contact your local Conservation Officer for assistance. Normal protocol is for people to remove source(s) of temptation and wait 10-14 days to see if the bear(s) will move on. Usually they do. You have a right to protect yourself and your property. If a bear is causing immediate danger or significant property damage (not just bird feeders and gar-
bage cans) you can destroy the bear. You must contact a Conservation Officer within 48 hours of destroying a bear. The MN DNR website has helpful information about living with wildlife: www.dnr.state.mn.us. There is information helpful to beekeepers, which would help gardeners as well.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson
It appears there will be a special legislative session to deal with infrastructure damage caused by heavy rains in parts of the state. Both the northeast and southeast portions of Minnesota were hit by weather systems that stalled and dumped copious amounts of rain in a short period of time. Areas around Duluth, for example, received upwards of nine inches in a 24hour period. Damage estimates to public property range over $100 million. No word yet as to when the governor will call us back into special session. It’s amazing how quickly moisture can be used up by growing crops. When those last storm systems moved through the area two weeks ago, the soil profile was nearly full of moisture. Now, after days on end of hot temps and rapidly growing crops, most areas are in need of rain once again. The small grains have been pushed to maturity too quickly, while the corn in many areas is just beginning to tassel. That’s when the corn plants really need moisture and moderate temperatures. The forecast for this week doesn’t call for those conditions, as we are in line for several more days in the 90’s with high humidity.
Several new laws took effect on July 1, among which is a statute that doubles the fines for not cleaning boats and trailers when leaving lakes in Minnesota. Drain plugs must be removed from any boat being transported, even if it’s being moved from storage. Fines can range up to $500 for boat violations, and $100 for having weeds attached to a trailer. The biggest concern is trying to slow down the spread of zebra mussels, which are already in several of Minnesota’s most popular lakes. With all the lakes and public boat launch areas we have in Minnesota, it’s a logistical nightmare trying to ensure that all boats and trailers are free of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) when either leaving or entering a lake. It’s hoped that other methods of control can be adopted as science learns more about these pests, such as the control methods used on the sea lamprey, which was once thought to be a serious problem in Lake Superior. I’d like to add my congratulations to Dr. Bill Hartmann, who was recently presented with an Outstanding Service Award by the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hartmann, who serves as the Minnesota state veterinarian, played a key role in the state’s handling of the recent outbreak of TB in cattle herds in northwestern Minnesota. That outbreak has now been controlled and the state has been re-certified as being TB-free. Department of Applied Economics has found the impact of the veterinary medicine industry on the state’s economy is about $1.5 billion. According to the report, private vet practices and clinics throughout the state account for most of the veterinary workforce as they employ nearly 8,000 workers, including 1,800 veterinarians. Only ten of Minnesota’s 87 counties do not have a private veterinary practice. As one who formerly raised cattle, I realize the important role these folks play in Minnesota’s livestock industry. Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City June 5, 2012 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Senior Center on Tuesday, June 5, 2012. The meeting was called to order at 7:30p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, and Tim Grittner. Absent: Jim Molitor, Jim Piekarski. Also present: Becky Galligan, Bryan Allen, Gene Harthan and Brian Zapzalka. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held May 8, 2012 were read. AJ Johnson made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tim Grittner and seconded by
AJ Johnson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Gene Harthan, representing Swanville Public School, was present to ask if the softball field and the newly purchased land adjacent to the field could be annexed into the city. After discussion, AJ Johnson made a motion to start the process to annex the land into the City of Swanville. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Mayor will get in contact with the City Attorney to see what steps will have to be done. Becky Galligan was present to see if the city would be interested in selling lot 30 on Forest Hill Lane to her brother so he could build a road to the adjoining land. After discussion and

Tim Grittner made a motion to accept the bid from Central Tank Coating in the amount of $9,700.00. AJ Johnson seconded the motion.

The Mayor stated that at the last Swanville Lions Meeting the park building was dedicated to Ray Loven who is the longest Lions Member to date. The park building is in need of two new doors. It was decided to have Mike Piekarski Construction replace these doors in the amount of $1653.76. The doors will be replaced soon. It was noted that there has been people taking black dirt from the city’s compost pile and using it outside the city limits. It was decided to have a sign made and put up by the compost fence stating the black dirt needs to be used within the city limits only. Donation resolution # 120605B was received from the Swanville Women’s Civic Club in the amount of $100.00 to be used for flowers. AJ Johnson made a motion to accept the do-
nation. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Mark Hallen, city engineer, stated that the he should be hearing from the PFA in August sometime about the Rhoda Avenue water project. The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. AJ Johnson made a motion to approve the claims. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The next monthly meeting will be held July 3, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. There being no further business, a motion was made by Tim Grittner and seconded by AJ Johnson to adjourn. June 30, 2012: Just before midnight, two houses were shot with paint ball guns along County 104, just south of County 13. One of the owners of the home stated the shots came from a passing vehicle. Successful Dairy Systems Tour set for July 11
The University of Minnesota Extension Service in Todd County is having a dairy farmer tour at the James and Jenn Maus Dairy Farm on July 11. The Maus Farm had a devastating barn fire in 2009; since then they have rebuilt their dairy facility. The Maus family elected to construct an 82-cow sand-bedded freestall barn. Cow comfort and production has been excellent and they maintain a SCC in the low 100’s. They also installed a double-11 parabone swing parlor. Even though this is a new facility, the concepts follow close to what we describe as the “low-cost parlor”; by low cost we imply low construction cost while still achieving an efficient and comfortable parlor for people and cows. The James and Jenn Maus are also in the process of transiting the farm from James’ parents Dennis and Rita Maus. Properly inter-generational transitioning of farms and businesses is a challenging and necessary process in today’s volatile market. From Long Prairie: 6 miles south on US 71, 8 miles west on MN 27, 3 miles south on 151st Ave, 1/2 mile west on 150th St., farm is on right.
