How weird are we?

For years I have been promoting the concept that you must “humanize your selling strategy.” The short explanation for this plan is that you must match your sales approach to the individual or company who will buy your product. How will it benefit them? Let’s use envelopes as an example. What sets your very ordinary product apart from all the other envelopes that your customers can choose from? Your selling strategy. How you sell. The relationships you have built with the buyers. The pricing, quality and delivery that you are able to promise, and then the follow through. Because you’re not just selling envelopes. You are selling a person. That strategy has been my ace in the hole for my entire selling career. And no matter how much the customers change, the formula continues to work. Seth Godin I just finished reading Seth Godin’s fascinating new book that reinforces my thinking. Starting with the curious title, We Are All Weird, I was taken with his observations. Godin says that “human beings prefer to organize in tribes, into groups of people who share a leader or a culture or a definition of normal. And the digital revolution has enabled and amplified these tribes . . . who respect and

admire and support choices that outsiders happily consider weird, but that those of us in the tribe realize are normal (our normal). “My argument is that the choice to push all of us toward a universal normal merely to sell more junk to the masses is both inefficient and wrong. The opportunity of our time is to support the weird, to sell to the weird and, if you wish, to become weird.” He explains that years ago, massmarketing led to greater profits, that specializing or acceding to choices was not necessary because producers could make more money from “forced compliance and social pressure.” Godin cites a statistic that in 1918 there were 2000 car companies active in the United States. You may recall that Henry Ford’s production line process changed car manufacturing forever. And he’s rumored to have said that a customer could have a car in any color, as long as it was black. Was that the beginning of mass marketing? On the contrary, years later Microsoft “knew that every single company in the Fortune 500 was using their software, usually on every single personal computer and server in the company.” With that sort of success, Godin asks, “Is it any wonder that market-leading organizations fear the weird?” Godin predicts the end of “mass” as we know it. And he says that may make you uncomfortable if your work “revolves around finding the masses, creating for the masses, or selling to the masses.”

R a t h e r than seeing this change as a threat, he says it is the opportunity of a lifetime. “The way of the world is now more information, more choice, more freedom, and more interaction. And yes, more weird.” I can certainly relate to Godin’s premises. My customers are not the folks who buy plain old #10 envelopes. They need all sorts of specialized products that they can’t find at the mega-office supply store. I would not characterize them as weird, but we see each account as having specific requests and needs that we can fill better than any other company. Our company motto is “To be in business forever.” We can’t accomplish that if we refuse to accommodate the specific, unique and occasionally weird orders that we receive. Obituaries Elmer A. Rachuy

E l m e r Rachuy, age 94 of Glenwood, died Saturday, December 31, 2011 at his home in Glenwood. Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 6th at Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Interment was in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. Elmer August Rachuy, son of Fred and Amanda (Hochbaum) Rachuy, was born August 28, 1917 in Rose Hill Township, Minnesota. He was confirmed in German at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rose Hill Township, Minnesota. Elmer entered the United States Army in February of 1941. He went overseas with the 6th Infantry Division during World War II where he served in New Guinea and was in the Invasion of Lyon in the Philippines. Elmer rose through the stages of the rank of Sergeant and ultimately received the Battlefield Commission of 2nd Lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945. On September 25, 1946, Elmer was united in marriage to Vivian Anderson.

They farmed near Westbrook, Grey Eagle and Farwell, Minnesota until 1969, when they moved to Glenwood. In Glenwood, Elmer was employed at Glenwood Manufacturing, Hustad Implement and Eagle Bank, where he and Vivian did custodial work until their retirement. Elmer enjoyed playing cards, feeding and watching the birds, and spending time with his family. He especially loved to visit with people and would always stop by various homes and businesses in Glenwood to chat. One of his favorite places to visit with friends was at Tom’s Food Pride in Glenwood. Elmer is survived by his children, Gary (Pam) Rachuy of Warroad, Sharon Rachuy of Duluth, and Carol Kocher of Fergus Falls; five grandchildren, Rebecca (Brian) Marketon of Waverly, Matthew (Kari Lund) Rachuy of Warroad, Katrina (Casey) Garza of Portland, OR, Joseph and Abby Kocher of Fergus Falls; honorary grandchildren, Michele Buckley and Andy Schneider; greatgrandchildren, Brennan and Landon Marketon of Waverly; sister, Estella Gertner of San Bernardino, CA; sister-inlaw, Vera Rachuy of Westbrook; friend, Deb Yackel; and various nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vivian in 2003; brother, Melvin; brother-in-law Alfred Gertner and granddaughter, Holly Kocher.

Services were held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, 12:00 p.m. at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Mary Ann Biskey, 57, who died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 5, 2012 near her home in Burtrum, Minn. Rev. Bill Bakewicz officiated and a private interment will take place at a later date at Bearhead Cemetery, Bruce Township, Todd County. Mary Ann Biskey was born March 20, 1954 in Melrose, Minn to Alcuin H. and Merena “Joie” (Welle) Stroeing. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1972. Thirty-five years ago, on June 11, 1976, she married Gary A. Biskey at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Minn. The couple made their home in north Minneapolis before moving to St. Bonifacius in 1986. They moved to Elk River in 2003 and 2 years ago they moved north of Burtrum, Minn. Mary

A memorial g a t h e r i n g celebrating the life of Gloria Jean Eng, age 70, of Swanville was held Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford. Gloria died Wednesday at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by her family. Gloria was born June 25, 1941 in Fargo, N.D. to Harold and Lucille (Jendro) Eng. She grew up in North Dakota where she lived until marrying George Gustin on November 8, 1958 when they moved to the St. Cloud area. They later divorced. She attained a degree from St. Benedict’s College in Social Work. Gloria not only was a loving mother and home-maker raising her 6 children, she also worked as a full time foster mother for over ten years and as a social worker. Her greatest

Marty Lou G. Metzger Marty Lou G. Metzger, age 79 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 6, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Rev. Marvin Enneking will officiate with Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be held on Monday, January 16 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. followed by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Marty Lou Genevieve Anderson was born January 10, 1932 in Mankato, Minnesota to Axel and Lucille (Hatcher)

Anderson. She was united in marriage to Virgil Metzger on October 3, 1953 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The couple resided in Melrose since 1963. Marty was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, canning, bowling, cross stitching, playing cards and dominos, and watching game shows on TV. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Ladies. Survivors include her husband, Virgil Metzger of Melrose; children, David (Amy) Metzger of Lino Lakes, Cindy (Bruce) Anderson of Andover, Kathy (Dan) Soland of Broken Arrow, OK, and Paul (Suzanne) Metzger of St. Louis Park; 12 grandchildren and one greatgranddaughter. Marty Lou was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Noel Schulte; and granddaughter, Vicky Fitzgerald. Serving as casket bearers will be Nathan Metzger, Nicholas Metzger, Tyler Metzger, Jacob Metzger, Amanda Metzger, and Noah Anderson. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be held at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the mass at the church. Justina H. Welz was born September 10, 1918 in Holdingford, Minnesota to Peter and Teresa (Brandtner) Welz. On January 30, 1956 she married Alphonse Tiemann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Toots retired after working for

over 20 years at Gamble’s Retail Store in Sauk Centre. She moved to Melrose in 1990, after her husband’s death. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. Toots enjoyed playing games, especially cards, and taking the tour bus to the casino. Survivors include her son, Philip (Carolyn) Tiemann of McMinnville, Oregon; granddaughters, Megan and Amanda; sister, Edna (Duane) Hedine of Walla Walla, Washington; and sister-inlaw, Marie Welz of Melrose. Toots was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse Tiemann; parents; brothers and sisters, Marie Frie, Evelyn Hoeschen, Ramona Williams, Carl Welz, Ted Welz, Robert Welz, and John Welz.

As Our Shrinks Get Older By Saralee Perel I had a private psychotherapy practice for 22 years. Had I continued, the following scenario would have happened. Me to my patient, whom I’ve seen for 10 years: “And after all this time, the most important thing I’ve ever wanted you to know is ... um ... I can’t find the two words. Give me a minute.” My patient waits in silence for 20 minutes of her 50-minute hour. I pace back and forth, cursing out loud that I can’t find the words. Me to patient: “I know it has a ‘C’ in it. I’ll get it. Give me a few more minutes.” Patient curses at me. I sit back down and gently say, “It’s natural for the patient to turn things around and direct her anger toward the therapist.” Patient, steaming, “You’re using up all my time trying to remember two lousy words!” “It seems like you are feeling anger toward me. Would you like to talk about it?” “I just did!” Me, leaning forward and touching her hand so as not to upset her further, “It seems like you are feeling anger toward me. Would you like to talk about it?” “You just said that!” “Sorry. I forgot. Where were we?” Patient, now fuming, “You couldn’t come up with the most important two words I should know.” Me: “Oh, that’s right. What were those words?” Patient, looking at her watch, “How should I know? That is your job.” Me: “Oh.” Patient: “Do you have any idea how little time we have left in my session?” Me, looking at my watch, “Sure. Just remind me when we started.” Patient gets up to leave. “I’m not paying for this!” Me: “You pay? How much?” As my patient opens the door to leave, I say, “Don’t go. Please come sit so we can talk this out.” Reluctantly, she sits down. Then we both wait for the other to say something. A good therapist acknowledges when she makes mistakes, so I say, “I am truly sorry for making you angry.

Can we get past that and move on?” “OK.” “Last session, you made the most progress I’ve ever seen you make. How do you feel about that now?” Patient relaxes. “I’ve felt the best I have ever felt in my entire life. And it’s all because of you.” “No. It’s not. If you weren’t courageously ready to get better, nothing I’ve said would have mattered. I don’t deserve the kudos. You do. I want to hear your reply.” My patient, uncomfortably accepting that it has been her victory says happily and proudly, “OK. You’re the expert. You’re saying that I made the progress.” I nod emphatically. She gives me a high five and says, “Then I guess I did!” We enjoy a final moment of silent elation. Then she asks, “So what were those two most important words?” “You’re cured!” We hug as she leaves for the last time. As you know I made up this whole scenario. Luckily, I don’t have age-related memory problems. And now, I’d like to take this new time of year to thank my great editors for all their help, here at the Poughkeepsie Bugle. This high population of military involvement demonstrates the need for positive mentoring relationships to support the youth impacted, and also indicates a wealth of military oriented individuals who would make excellent, compassionate, empathetic mentors. Big Brothers Big Sisters seeks to bring these two populations together to provide a rich experience for all parties involved, and to support these mentoring relationships with a professionally degreed and trained staff member who is familiar with and passionate about working with military families. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MN has been rapidly establishing relationships throughout the military community with such organizations as: Camp Ripley’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Regional Inter-Service Family Assistance Center, Central Minnesota Warrior to Citizen, Operation Military Kids, University of MN Extension Educator Volunteer & Partnership Development, and Veterans on Campus at St. Cloud State University. January 4, 2012: The Todd County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a 57 year old female reported missing from her rural residence in Bruce Township. Maryann Leona Biskey was reported missing from her rural Burtrum residence by her husband, who noticed her missing when he awoke in the morning. Subject left her purse and cell phone at the residence and no vehicle was missing. Subject’s friends and family have not heard from her since the evening of Jan. 3, 2012. Anyone with information is asked to call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

January 5, 2012: The body of Maryann Biskey was located approximately 1/4 mile from her residence in Bruce Township, Sect. 33. The incident is still under investigation. An autopsy will be performed at the Anoka County Medical Examiners Office. Biskey had been reported missing from her residence on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2012. The Todd County Sheriff’s Posse, the Long Prairie Fire Department and the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter assisted in search efforts. The MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also assisting in the investigation.

DNR launches new prevention efforts to slow spread of aquatic invasive species The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today its new strategies to fight the spread of aquatic invasive species across the state in 2012. The efforts take a two-pronged approach: to increase inspections and decontamination of boats at and near water bodies, especially those infested with aquatic invasive species; and to increase awareness that the public must do its part not to spread invasive species. “The DNR cannot be at every boat ramp this summer, making sure boaters, anglers and other water users are not bringing zebra mussels and other invasive species to public waters,” said DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr. “Our message is these waters belong to everyone - so everyone needs to be responsible for not moving these invaders.” More information about responsibilities for boaters and other watercraft operators is available atwww.dnr.state. mn.us/invasives/preventspread.html. In 2012, the DNR will institute new invasive species check stations, hire more watercraft inspectors, deploy more decontamination units and increase its public awareness efforts – all to stop the spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic invaders. Here is an overview: Road Check Stations: A new state law gives DNR authority to operate check stations that require motorists transporting boats, trailers and other marine equipment to be inspected for aquatic invasive species. The check stations, which will begin this year, will route motorists pulling boats or other marine equipment into staging areas, where they will be greeted, and a brief conversation will take place prior to their boats and other water-related equipment being inspected. Among other questions, inspectors will ask where the boat is coming from and how long it has been in the water. If the boat or water-related equipment fails the inspection, or inspectors believe the boat may be carrying aquatic invasive species, the motorist and boat water related equipment will be directed to an area where high-pressure and hot water will be used to decontaminate the

equipment. Conservation officers may also take enforcement action if the motorist or boat owner has not complied with laws prohibiting the transportation of aquatic invasive species. More decontamination units: The DNR will purchase 20 high-pressure, hot-water decontamination units that will be operated at zebra mussel infested waters, high-use destination lakes and at DNR Enforcement check points. These new units will be in addition to the three units purchased and deployed last fall around Detroit Lakes, Alexandria, Brainerd (including Mille Lacs), and the Twin Cities at high-use accesses on zebra mussel infested waters. Additional Staff: The DNR will hire 150 new authorized watercraft inspectors who will be deployed around the state. Three additional invasive species specialists will also be hired to work with lake associations, local units of government and individuals on local prevention and management efforts. Fishing tournaments DNR: DNR fisheries biologists will team up with the agency’s Aquatic Invasive Species Program to conduct watercraft inspection and decontamination demonstrations at five to seven large fishing contests being held on zebra-mussel-infested lakes. The goal is to teach tournament organizers how to lead and implement inspections and decontamination programs at their tournaments and promote prevention efforts among tournaments anglers. New Decal: The DNR has created a new decal explaining invasive species laws and procedures boaters should use to not spread the invaders. The decal contains an additional “Check the Drain Plug” decal that can be cut off and placed on the trailer to remind boaters to replace their plug before launching. Decals will be distributed through boat dealers, DNR offices and state parks and watercraft licensing outlets. Visitors to boating and sports shows can get them from DNR staff starting in mid-January. New educational video: With new funding received from the 2011 Legislature, the DNR awarded a $50,000 grant to a local media firm to produce a documentary on aquatic invasive species.
