What is a worthwhile goal? -By Harvey Mackay William Marsten, a prominent psychologist, authored a twoyear study where he asked 3,000 individuals the following: “What have you to live for?” What Dr. Marsten found was absolutely shocking. He discovered that 94 percent of those interviewed had no definite purpose. These were men and women who were simply enduring the present while they waited for the future. That story was shared by Dennis Kimbro and Napoleon Hill in the classic “Think and Grow Rich.” Anyone who needs a refresher in setting goals would be wise to review that masterpiece. I strongly believe that we need to set goals, but what is a goal? A goal is a dream with a deadline. It should be

measurable, identifiable, attainable, specific, in writing. I always advise not to forget to write your long-term and short-term goals down. Self-help gurus and life coaches all stress the importance of having goals if you want to succeed in life. The first step is identifying what exactly is a worthwhile goal. A goal should reflect your values, of course – what you really want, not what you should want, and certainly not what other people think you should achieve. Career and financial goals are perhaps the most obvious targets. What kind of job or role do you aspire to? How much money do you want to make? Or what would you like to buy that’s currently beyond your means? But you don’t have to zero in on work. Perhaps you have an artistic dream – to write a novel or learn to play the piano. Or maybe you want to work on some aspect of your personality: become more assertive, or empathetic, or less cynical. Education is another potential objective, whether it’s about getting an advanced degree or just taking a class in design. Big goals require big passion to bring them to life. Success usually requires a road map, a strategy, but it also calls for an overwhelming drive. Ask yourself these questions: Do you feel strongly about the importance of your goal and why it is necessary to achieve? Does your goal match your values and beliefs? Is your goal vital to the future of
people you care about? Does your goal get you excited when you think about it? Are you willing to devote your personal time to achieve your goal? Will you be able to reject criticism and negativity? Are you committed to the long term as you work toward your goal? Here’s my formula for setting goals that helps me focus on the result I want to achieve. • Make it positive. Think about your objective in affirmative terms: What you will do (“Eat balanced meals every day”), instead of what you won’t do (“Stop eating chocolate”). Remind yourself of what you want, not what you’re denying yourself. • Be fully committed. Choosing the right goals will make a huge difference in your motivation to succeed. • Take a step-by-step approach. You have to start with the big picture. Then you should determine what you need to do to get there. Break your plan down to the smallest level of detail; think of what you can do every day to get yourself a little closer to your target. Focus on things you can control. You can’t make your book a bestseller until you discipline yourself to write several pages every day. • Appreciate the learning opportunities. You may not succeed the first time, or the second time or after many times. Instead of obsessing on the results, figure out what works and what doesn’t, and why. • Take your goals seriously but Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Unique Foods Many of us recall foods that we ate which were not regularly consumed in other homes. These foods were part of the menu either because they were served by the cook’s mother or maybe as a cure for an ailment. One unique food that I recall was fish-head soup. The name doesn’t cause many mouths to water, but I can say that it was very tasty. In years past the Northern Pike which were speared in the winter were generally larger than those speared today. When someone speared a Northern over 10 pounds, they saved the head for my grandfather. My grandmother would take the soup kettle, fry some bacon in it and then add water to the kettle. A couple of fish heads were added to the pot, along with some salt and pepper. After a couple of hours of boiling, some home-made noodles were added. When the noodles were done, butter and some cream was added and again brought almost to a boil. Time to eat. Grand-pa always got the choice of the fish heads.
There was actually a lot of good flesh on the fish head. Sounds sort-of disgusting, but it was something we really enjoyed. When my other grandmother was diagnosed with anemia, the doctor said that she could cure herself by eating beef liver at least once per week and also have raw hamburger every day. When these items are to be consumed on a regular basis, the methods of preparation improve. Liver was found to be much tastier if it is served rare or medium rare along with some fried onions. Raw hamburger was put in a bowl, along with some chopped onions, salt and pepper. It was then refrigerated for a day and spread on crackers or home-made bread. I really miss this food. We no longer have this treat, since beef today has some questionable additives in it and we no longer process our own beef. Something I always wondered about was how beef was prepared. We ate raw hamburger, but beautiful beef steaks were browned and then put in a roasting kettle and roasted for a couple of hours in the oven. The result, along with the gravy was very good. It tasted like beef roast, which had to be roasted to make it tender. The steaks didn’t need to be made tender. But that is how it was done. Everyone can remember special foods from their childhood. Todd County Sheriff’s Office
December 18: At 17:44 responded to a one vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of County 98 and County 2. A 2000 GMC Yukon, driven by Felisa Ambriz Deraya of Melrose, rolled after entering the ditch. Ambriz Deraya had been traveling on County 98 approaching the intersection of County 2 when she went off of the roadway and struck a driveway approach. After the vehicle landed, it struck a electric pole and then rolled. Ambriz Deraya was transported by Lifelink Air Ambulance to the St. Cloud Hospital. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Grey Eagle Rescue, MN State Patrol, MN DNR and Sauk Centre Ambulance. It appeared alcohol was a factor in the crash.

don’t take yourself too seriously. If you aren’t having some fun along the way, your chances for success diminish. You should be able to derive some real pleasure out of achieving your goals. • Trust your judgment, but don’t be afraid to ask for advice. There is no rule against asking for help. • Set your sights high. Be realistic, but ambitious. There’s no glory in accomplishing a goal that doesn’t require any effort. That’s just an item on your to-do list. Your goal should make you stretch and grow. Remember that even if you don’t reach your objective, what you learn along the way will make you a better person.

Obituaries Robert A. “Bob” Van Heel
Robert A. “Bob” Van Heel, age 82 of Freeport, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at his home in Freeport, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Robert Alphonse Van Heel was born January 1, 1936 in Freeport, Minnesota to Frank and Agnes (Notch) Van Heel. He graduated from Melrose High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1963. On July 1, 1961 he was united in marriage to Janice Roering at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Bob took over the family farm north of Freeport until 1990. He then worked at Famo Feeds until 1993. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Catholic United Financial,

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Elmer Van Heel; and sisters, Leona Schloegl, Valeria Schrantz, and Louise Minnette. Serving as casket bearers were Alex Van Heel, Chris Haus, Ashley Haus, Brenden Nelson, Aaron Van Heel, and Sara Van Heel. Cross bearer was Michala Van Heel and scripture bearer was Megan Van Heel. Gift bearers were Amber Ritter, Katie Van Heel, and Becca Van Heel and readers were Katelyn Nelson and Mary Van Heel. Eucharistic ministers were Bonnie Van Heel and Tina Van Heel. High School in 1980. Dwayne worked in the family business, Finch Paint and Wallpaper for many years. He also owned and operated Leisure Sports, a business tied directly to his passions in life, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. The last serval years he was employed at Dan’s Prize. He married Joy Lund on February 12, 2010. Many lifelong friends and relatives are left to remember the back of the Paint Store, times in a boat, chats by the fire, days on the golf course, tales of the hunt, the life of a man who was well and truly loved. Dwayne is survived by his wife, Joy; step-daughters, Kristi (Neil) Wielenberg and Ashley Johnson; his brother, Dennis Jr. (Ann) Finch; grandson Gage Wienlenberg and many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include her daughters, Carol (DuWayne Johnson) Blommel Johnson of Farmington, Kathy (Todd) Smolnik of Fairbanks, Alaska, and MaryLou (Ken) Zitur of St. Anna; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Silverius (Penny) Blonigen of Wilmington, Massachusetts, Tillie (Bernard) Bussman of Melrose, Dolores Pundsack of Melrose, Clarence (Annella) Blonigen of St. Martin, and Leander (Annette) Blonigen of St. Martin; and sister-in law, Darlene Blonigen of St. Martin. Bernadine was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond “Roy” Arnzen; second husband, Orville Jacobson; parents; and brother, Raymond Blonigen. Serving as casket bearers were DuWayne Johnson, Todd Smolnik, Ken Zitur, Erin Good, Kris Blommel, and Samantha Rule. Cross bearer was Karsen Blommel and scripture bearer was Trevor Good. Readers were Samantha Rule and Kris Blommel. Gift bearers were Karsen Blommel and Trevor Good. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Bernadine A. Jacobson, age 88 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 18 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Bernadine Anna Blonigen was born May 8, 1930 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Mathias and Veronica (Mayers) Blonigen. On May 17, 1960 she married Raymond “Roy” Arnzen at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. The couple farmed on the Arnzen Homestead near St. Rosa until Roy’s passing on April 5, 1982. Bernadine then moved to Melrose and was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, sewing quilts, line dancing, gardening, and spending time with her family and friends. On July 14, 1990 she married, Orville Jacobson at St. Mary’s Catholic

Rita K. Von Wahlde
Rita K. Von Wahlde, age 76 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, December 19 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Rita Kathryn Kampsen was born November 20, 1942 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Margaret (Kuefler) Kampsen. Rita graduated from Melrose High School in 1960. On August 21, 1965 she was united in marriage to Raymond Von Wahlde at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Rita worked five and a half years at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre before starting her family. She later worked at Schaefer’s Market and was a lunch lady at Holy Family School. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic

Marie A. (Kerfeld) Eiynck, 94, a woman of strength, dignity, and laughter has passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, December 19th at the Church of Seven Dolors in Albany, Mn. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Marie was born May 9, 1924 on the home farm in Freeport, Mn. to Henry and Anna Kerfeld. She attended a one room school house and completed 8th grade. She desperately wanted to attend Melrose High School, but was denied due to lack of transportation. Hard work was just a given from helping on the farm, bringing a lantern out to the chicken coop at 4:30 a.m., cutting fire wood, milking cows, and helping her married sister with child care and housework. At age 17 she worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd and at age 20 went to Duluth to work in the Operating Room at St. Mary’s Hospital. She met her first and only love of her life Lawrence Eiynck at her sister Olivia’s wedding and was married May 29, 1945. Employment after her marriage included: St. Ben’s Monastery, St. Joe, (laundry); Brown and Bigelow, St. Cloud, (putting rivets on cigarette lighters); Finger Hut, St. Cloud, (sewing patterns); Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Albany, (nursing assistant); and starting up their own business, Eiynck Plumbing and Heating. while starting up the business, Marie took in laundry in her home for students at St. John’s University. In her spare time… she was sewing clothes for her children, baking pies, cookies, and maintaining a home of excellence. She was not idle. Due to a devastating fall in 2008 she was no longer able to stay in her home and became a resident of St. Benedict Senior Community. She was very active as a member of the resident council, attended daily mass, participated in baking, art projects, and enjoyed playing Bingo. Volunteering and service to others was very important to Marie. She was a member of Christians Mothers, Little Flower Mission Group, St. Ann’s Society, Church of Seven Dolors Quilters, Funeral Lady, Mother Seeton Store, and of course the Albany Bazaar (she liked the country store). She is survived by her children: Jim (Louise), Colleen (Gary) Layne, Sharon (Joe) Stellmach, Sandy (Jeff) Janssen, and son in law Kevin (Casey) (Anne) Marrin. She has eleven grandchildren Matthew Marrin, Annie (Ted Hansen) Marrin, Ericka (Mike) Goebel, Phillip (Sarah) Layne, Jonathan (Vanessa) Layne, Kelsi (Jeff) Plattner, Kate (Michael Freiert), David (Erin) Stellmach, Eric, Karen, and Rachel Janssen. Eleven great-grandchildren: Landen, Alexis, Layton Goebel, Mason, Jayden Layne, Eliana, Dominic Stellmach, Josephine Freiert, Ruby, Kellen Plattner, and Theodore Layne. Siblings: sister Rita Niehaus. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence, children Carol Marrin and stillborn twin daughters, siblings: Adella Blommel, Lawrence, Hubert, Raymond Kerfeld, Eleanore Herzog, and Olivia Eiynck Kimlinger. The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Victor J. Lauer, age 94 of Albany was held Tuesday, December 18 at the Church of Seven Dolors in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Victor died Thursday, December 13 at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. Victor was born February 11, 1924 in Farming to Christian and Barbara (Wilms) Lauer. He married Hilde Silvers on June 7, 1948 in Farming. Victor farmed near Farming until he retired. He enjoyed music and he sang in the St. Catherine Church choir for many years. He was a member of the Church of Seven Dolors, the Seven Dolors Knight of Columbus and Catholic United Financial. He is survived by his children, Rich (Mary) Lauer, Sauk Centre; Jo (Jim)

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m on Baby Step 1 of your plan, and I work at a community college that takes a mandatory 20 percent from our pay for retirement. I know you say retirement contributions should be put on hold until all debt except for your home is paid off, so do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? It feels like it’s hard to get traction with getting control of my money when so much is being taken out of every paycheck. -Kristi Dear Kristi, That is a lot to take out. I’ve heard of a few places that have a mandatory 12 percent contribution, but 20 percent? That’s very unusual. And it’s unusually high. I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, you took the job. It’s what you signed up for. But if it becomes enough of an issue with your finances, you may have to decide at some point if you still want to work there. My recommendation is to begin setting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement after you’ve paid off all debt except your home, and you have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank. At least you’re not losing the money, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s your money that’s going in there for your use some day. I don’t know the exact structure of the retirement account, but it is going toward retirement savings of some kind—and that’s important! -Dave Dear Dave, I’m thinking about signing up for a return of premium life insurance policy. It costs more per month than other
policies, but it allows you to get all your money back after 30 years assuming you live that long. Is this too good to be true? -Tommy Dear Tommy, It’s not too good to be true, but it is a rip off. Never buy a return of premium life insurance policy. You said it costs more than other policies, right? Well, if you were to take that extra money you’d be paying and put it into a good mutual fund, you’d get all the cost of your policy back after 30 years 100 percent of the time. Return of premium policies are just a gimmick. When it comes to life insurance, always go with a good, 15- to 20-year level term policy. Dear Motor Medics, I own a 2005 Chevrolet Impala that I bought used in March of 2006 with 8,000 miles. The vehicle now has 182,000 miles so it does not sit still very often. I have been having problems with the speedometer and other instrument cluster gauges not working correctly. Sometimes the speedometer will stick on 60 and not drop down until I shut off and restart the car. Is this is a common problem with this type of vehicle and if so how do I fix it? - Doug in Minneapolis, MN Dear Doug, We have repaired several of these but many are still ticking with well over 200,000 miles on them. A general repair shop should be able to diagnose the issue and if they find that it is within the speedometer they can replace the unit with a rebuilt unit that is available from most auto parts stores. The units come pre-programed for easy installation. When they order the unit it can take a couple of weeks or so as they need to send your vehicle information like mileage and identification number to the manufacturer of the unit so that they can enter it into the replacement. Once it arrives your shop can install the unit and they will have you sign a mileage affidavit stating that the mileage you gave them to enter into the replacement was correct. Can this be done for a reasonable price and where do we go to get it done? -Janet in Madison, Wisconsin Dear Janet, Power features have become standard on vehicles or at least it seems that way. More and more vehicles, especially ones that are used for hauling the family like a van seem to almost always have full power in them. It is a rarity for one to come into our shop that does not have at least power windows and locks but they are out there. The cost of the accessories will be dependent on the shop and the quality. As for adding them to the front doors that should not be that big of an issue. Many companies offer aftermarket power windows and lock kits and remotes can be added easily as well. The power sliding doors are another story and I have not seen anyone who makes an aftermarket unit for those but there may be some out there. Power sliders can be very difficult to work on and I have fought with my share. Check around with local vehicle accessory shops that install cruise controls, air conditioning, remote starts, etc. These types of shops often install power accessories like this as well. -Take care, the Motor Medics For entertainment only. Grey Eagle City November 13, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 13th day of November, 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner and Brian Hollenkamp. Council member Bill Pohlmann was absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Dan Berscheid and Ken Messer. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the October 9, 2018 meeting as written. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. Fire Chief Dan Berscheid was in attendance to discuss the following Fire Department items: 1. The Fire Department is recommending that Brandon DeFoe and Austin Landkammer be approved to the Fire Department roster effective immediately. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve Brandon DeFoe and Austin Landkammer to the Grey Eagle Volunteer Fire Department effective immediately. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. 2. The Fire Department truck committee is looking at replacing the Mack tanker. The cost would be approximately $165,000. A motion was made Brian Hollenkamp to move forward with the tanker. The Fire Department would need to come back to the council for approval for purchase. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The council discussed the sewer use charge for vacant homes or businesses within the city. Effective January 1, 2019 the sewer use charge will be charged whether or not the water is connected. The Council discussed removing snow from the sidewalks. Property owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice. The two business blocks of State Street (Main Street) will be cleaned by the City IF there is two inches of snow or more. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the contract with Herdering, Inc., for snow removal. Steven Douglas Weibye was born August 28, 1947 to Roger and Alice (Minke) Weibye in Long Prairie. His family moved to Minneapolis and eventually Spring Lake Park, MN, where he graduated from High School. He served in the US Army as a medic in Viet Nam from 1965 to 1968. Upon return, Steve and Sheryl Knoll were married in Minneapolis. From this union Seth and Stephanie were born. His marriage ended and Steve was single for a time while he worked as a printer. He married Patti Dischinger in 1992. The couple made their home in Minneapolis while Steve drove delivery truck for several companies. It was always Steve’s

Yvette Terhaar
Yvette Berta Huisentruit Terhaar, age 93 years, 11 months, and 10 days, passed away Monday, December 10, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family. Yvette was born December 21, 1924 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Alphonse and Adella (Bruns) Huisentruit. She attended grade school in Freeport and Melrose. In the spring of 1942, Yvette hitchhiked to St. Cloud and began work as one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” for a company called Char Gale in what is now the current Electrolux Manufacturing facility. Char Gale was a defense contractor at the time, building C-46 Transport Planes for the U.S. Army Air Corps, to be used in the campaigns raging in the Pacific and European Theaters of War. After the war, Yvette was united in marriage to John Terhaar on September 1, 1945 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Soon after they began farming in Grove Township, west of New Munich. From this union they had three children, John, Mike, and Mary. They later divorced in 1965. A true child of the Great Depression, Yvette was known as thrifty, hardworking, and being very self-sufficient. She had a hard time throwing anything away, because, in her words, “You never know.” Canning, gardening, raising chickens, hogs and cattle for butchering and filling the smokehouse was just another day’s work on the farm for her. Yvette also worked as a waitress at Chicks Riverside Restaurant on the Sauk River west of Melrose. A selftaught cook, Yvette could produce a meal out of anything that would rival the best chefs of the time. In September of 1965, tragedy struck and
Yvette was involved in a horrific automobile accident, resulting in a stay at the St. Cloud Hospital for 27 months, 12 of which were spent in traction, flat on her back, mending multiple compound fractures in both legs and arms. In 1972 Yvette met Innocent Wiechmann and they were together until his death in 1992. Innie and Yvette’s hobbies included playing cards, shaking dice, watching Wheel of Fortune, and fishing Long Lake, a.k.a. “The Old Favorite.” If she caught a fish that was not in season, like a bass for instance, and was likely to die if released, she would keep the fish in an old garage sale purse she carried for just this purpose, much to the chagrin of Innie who envisioned his prize Lund confiscated by the DNR for a skunky old bass. Yvette also was a chauffeur for many of her friends who did not drive and the ladies could be seen speeding down the freeway heading to St. Cloud in search of a bargain. Yvette was also a spiritual person, never was heard saying a bad word about anyone, attended Sunday Mass regularly, observed the Holy Days, and prayed her rosary. Yvette was also blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, and could be a bit of a prankster. She was also humble, to the core. Yvette was preceded in death by her parents, significant other Innie, brothers and sisters, Julius, Maurice, Roger, Daniel, Gordon, Ruth, Jane, Alphonse, and Jerry. She also never gave up hope that her niece, Jody Huisentruit would make it back home safely someday. Yvette is survived by her children, John, Somerset, Wisconsin, Mike, Lewistown, Pennsylvania, Mary, Chanhassen, Minnesota, granddaughters, Heidi and Katie, grandson, Adam, and great-grandsons, Jaydee, Samuel, and Jackson, and her last remaining sibling, Carol Peterson, St. Cloud. Also, many nieces and nephews in Minnesota, Montana, Maryland, Colorado, and Florida. To honor our mother’s wishes, a brief memorial was held graveside for immediate family, Friday, December 14, 2018.

Bob and Joan Keppers, ages 72 and 63, of Avon, died unexpectedly on Sunday, December 16, 2018 near Avon, MN. Bob was born May 11, 1946 in Avon, MN to Phillip and Lucy (Merkling) Keppers. He graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School. He helped out on the family farm until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1965. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1968. Bob and Joan met each other while playing softball. They were married October 16, 1976 at Holy Cross Church in North Prairie, MN. They farmed and raised their family near Avon, MN. Bob drove truck for WD Scepaniak of Holdingford, MN for 26 years. Joan managed the farm when Bob was driving truck, took care of her family, was a daycare provider and taught religion classes. Bob enjoyed exploring the open road, eating at various restaurants, skating, tinkering in his shop, and doing mechanic work. Joan enjoyed gardening, music, quilting, sewing, crafts, baking, coordinating events for the annual Fall Day, and celebrating the Christmas season. Together they enjoyed farming, horses, playing cards, deer hunting, dancing, helping people out, relaxing by the Mississippi river, spending time with children and grandchildren, and visiting relatives and friends. Bob and Joan are survived by their children: Aaron (Lori) Keppers of Avon, MN; Elaine (Jason) Thelen of Holdingford, MN; Alexis (Jesse) Lutgen of Avon, MN; and Lisa Keppers of Avon, MN. Bob and Joan enjoyed spending time with their 6 grandchildren: Lucy Thelen, Allie Thelen, Eli Thelen, Vivian Lutgen, Megan Keppers, and Jacob Lutgen. They leave behind their dog Cody. They are also survived by their siblings: Paul Keppers of St. Francis, MN, Elmer Keppers of Avon, MN, Ella Budde of Albany, MN, Ruth Kosel of St. Cloud, MN, Donnie Hurdt of North Prairie, MN and Anne Legatt of Rice, MN. Casey R. & Simon C. Myers Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole for Casey R. Myers, age 30 Holdingford and infant son, Simon who passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Reverend Eugene Doyle will officiate. Private interment will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday and after 9:00 a.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Parish prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church in Opole. Casey was born April 6, 1988 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Jeff and Pattie (Laudenbach) Gunderson. Baby Simon Casey Myers was born on December 17, 2018. Casey grew up in Avon and was a 2006 Triple A award winner and graduate of Albany High School. She completed her undergrad from St. Cloud State University and went on to complete her Masters in Occupational Therapy at the University of Minnesota. Casey married Matthew C. Myers on August 29, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. She was employed as an Occupational Therapist for the CentraCare Pediatric and Adult Rehab.
Casey was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. Casey was described as the light of any room she walked into. With a genuine heart and a smile for everyone, she truly was an angel on earth. When Casey was not busy putting her heart into her heartfelt work, she enjoyed spending time outdoors; running, playing volleyball and more recently gardening with family. She also enjoyed finding new ways to incorporate her healthy outlook on life into spending time with family and friends. Casey cared deeply for everyone in her life, with her true passion being a wife and mother; something she excelled at every day. Bernice A. “Bernie” Wiehoff Bernice A. “Bernie” Wiehoff, age 87 of Melrose passed away Friday, December 14, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2019 with inurnment at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota. Bernice Ann Krebs was born on July 26, 1931 in Albany, Minnesota to Ben and Anna (Solinger) Krebs. On August 22, 1950 she married Ralph “Curly” Wiehoff at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Bernie worked at Chicks Supper Club in Melrose, was co-owner with her husband at Curly’s Bar in Melrose and worked at Ernie’s Jubilee in Melrose. She enjoyed gardening and volunteering her time at St. Mary’s School and Park View Center in Melrose. She was great at preparing wild game like pheasant.

Fatal Crash December 16, 2018: At 11:17 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a crash involving a pickup truck and a horse drawn buggy. The crash happened on County Road 9 just south of Queens Road, north of the Avon city limits. The crash was reported to the Communications Center from the pickup’s On-Star impact activation system. Several other people stopped to assist at the crash scene. While officers were en route, information was received that both parties in the buggy were critically injured and CPR was in progress. According to Sheriff Don Gudmundson, a Ford F150, driven by Marc Lucas Knapp, 23, of Avon, was traveling northbound on County Road 9. A single horse drawn buggy, occupied by an adult male, 72, and an adult female, 66, both of Avon, was also traveling northbound on County Road 9 along the shoulder. Knapp struck the buggy from behind sending it into the east ditch. Responding officers closed County Road 9 at Queens Road for southbound traffic and County Road 9 and Pond’s Edge Lane while aid was rendered and the investigation was conducted. As of 2:45 p.m. the road was reopened. Avon Fire & Rescue along with Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the scene. The Minnesota State Patrol arrived to assist by mapping the crash scene for a reconstruction. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office UAV was deployed to film and photograph the scene to assist with reconstruction. The Ford F150 and the buggy were placed at the Stearns County Cold Storage Facility. The deceased parties, Bob and Joan Keppers of Avon, were transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office. The horse was severely injured and died at the scene. The horse remains were removed by family friends. This crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. Fatal Crash December 17, 2018: At 7:48 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a crash involving a semi-tractor trailer and an SUV. The crash happened at the intersection of County Road 4 and County Road 133 in LeSauk Township. Corey William Planck, 46, of Star City, Indiana, was operating a 2000 Kenworth semi-tractor combination northeast on County Road 133 towards the City of Sartell. A 30-year-old adult female was operating a 2017 Subaru Forrester southeast towards the City of St. Cloud on County Rd. 4.
The female driver stopped at the stop sign for traffic and began to proceed through the intersection. Planck failed to stop at the intersection and struck the Forrester on the passenger side. Planck indicated to investigating deputies he did not see the stop sign. The intersection is a 4-way stop design. It was reported the 30-year-old driver of the Forrester was unconscious and not responding. She was also several months pregnant. She was treated on scene by first responders and medics from Gold Cross Ambulance and transported to the St. Cloud Hospital. Neither the 30-year-old driver, Casey Rose Myers, 30, Holdingford nor her 5-month-old fetus survived the injuries sustained in the accident. Planck was not injured. Stearns County Sheriff’s Office along with the Sartell Police Department, Sartell Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded to the crash. The Minnesota State Patrol responded to assist with accident reconstruction and commercial vehicle inspection regarding the semi-tractor trailer. This crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. Crash December 18, 2018: At approximately 3:14 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center was notified of a motor vehicle crash with injuries on Quaker Rd, East of Albany in Albany Township. According to Sheriff Don Gudmundson, a 2001 Dodge Dakota, driven by Caleb Joseph Albritton, 16, of Avon, was eastbound on Quaker Road. Quaker Road has a slight curve to the northeast. The vehicle left the roadway on the south side, travelled back over the roadway entering the north ditch and struck a field approach. The vehicle vaulted over the field approach, striking the top of a tree before crashing and rolling. The vehicle came to a rest near the cement culvert of the river crossing. Albritton and his passenger, Isaac Gordon Sonnenburg, 14, of Avon, were able to get out of the truck on their own. The truck then started on fire along with a small portion of grassland surrounding it. Albritton and Sonnenburg were transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Albany Fire and Rescue, Albany Police Department, Avon Fire and Rescue, Gold Cross Ambulance and the Minnesota State Patrol. The crash remains under investigation.
