Are there really just two alternatives? -By Harvey Mackay
We live in a culture where compromise seems impossible. A meeting of the minds may consist of agreeing that the other party is wrong and the situation is hopeless. We sure can’t look to our political leaders, the ultimate deal-makers, because the chasms are too great. How did we get to this point? Can this trend be reversed? Can’t we all just get along? According to Stephen Covey, one of the brightest business brains I know, the outlook is promising. His new book, The 3rd Alternative, presents one of the most positive approaches to this universal issue that I have seen. You remember Covey from his mega-seller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which has helped millions organize their lives and their thinking. He briefly introduced this concept in that book, calling it “the most catalytic, the most empowering, the most unifying, and the most exciting” of all the principles he wrote about. Covey defines the The 3rd Alternative as not my way; not your way; it’s a 3rd way we create together that is better than what either of us is thinking. When facing a critical difference with someone, you ask, “Would you be willing to work with me to create a solution that is better than what either of us wants now?” Conflict is a natural part of life. “Life is full of problems. Problems that seem impossible to solve,” he writes. “...we lose hope, give up, or settle for a compromise that doesn’t feel so good in the end.” Covey says The 3rd Alternative works equally well on a playground, a battlefield, a boardroom, a legislative
chamber, or a family kitchen. And he says it is “the key to solving life’s most difficult problems.” How does it work? “To solve our most difficult problems, we must radically change our thinking,” he teaches. “You will find yourself poised on a transition point between your past, whatever it has been, and a future you have never imagined until now. You will discover within yourself a talent for change.” With conflict seemingly everywhere, the need for a book like this is obvious. Covey has organized it into chapters that deal specifically with applying The 3rd Alternative at work, at home, at school, within the law, in society, in the world and living an Alternative life. The anecdotal examples are helpful in that you can place yourself in similar situations. He explains the significance of creating positive synergy so that it isn’t just another buzzword. Finally, he presents twenty solutions that a successful 3rd Alternative thinker will employ -- from the inside out. I’d like to emphasize a few of them: • “Beware of pride. Let go of needing always to be ‘right.’” How difficult is it to abandon your “perfect” idea for what may be a much better solution? I know that’s a struggle for me often enough. But knowing how alternative thinking can improve so many situations, I’m more than willing to work on this one. • “Read widely -- it’s one of the best ways to make mental connections and get insights that can lead to 3rd Alternatives.” I couldn’t agree more. Every group I speak to hears this message: Be a lifelong learner. You can’t stop learning just because you are out of school. • “Make quiet time for yourself to think through creative 3rd Alternative solutions to your challenges.” As important as it is to be able to think on your feet,
you sometimes need time to sleep on an idea or separate yourself from the conflict long enough to cool down and reframe your thoughts. • “Learn how to become enthusiastically relentless about discovering how to create great wins for others -- wins that increase their peace, their happiness, and their prosperity. It will become infectious, and you may often find others seeking the same for you.” This is perhaps the most important lesson to learn, and to me it means you have achieved a new mindset. And I have learned that the biggest lesson in negotiating is: If every party can feel some sense of victory, the solution is usually the right one and success is more likely. Let me go back to where I started. Stephen Covey knows his stuff. I’ve learned plenty from him, and The 3rd Alternative presents a refreshing perspective on negotiating, problem solving and human relations. Two sides to every argument? Obituaries Dianne M. Lapos
Dianne Lapos, 64 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away peacefully December 10, 2011 at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls surrounded by her devoted family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating. Burial will take place at St. Stanislaus Parish in Sobieski, MN. Friends may call from 4-8 P.M. on Friday and from 9-10 A.M. on Saturday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Parish prayers will be prayed at 6:30 P.M. on Friday evening. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Dianne Marie (Wimmer) Lapos was born on January 29, 1947 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital to Bernadine (Olek) and the late Leo Wimmer. She grew up in Randall, MN and graduated from Little Falls Community High School
George C. Servatius in 1965. On October 16, 1965, she married Benedict Lapos, her high school sweetheart, at St. James Church in Randall. Ben and Dianne first lived in Holdingford before buying a hobby farm in Swan River Township where they raised eight children. Dianne was a stay-at-home mom until 1990 when she went back to school to get her AA and AS in nursing in 1995 and BA in nursing from St. Scholastica in 1999. While going to school and after she graduated, Dianne worked at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls on the Med/ Surg floor. She was actively involved in the community as a Bowlus First Responder, 4-H leader, and in the church as a CCD teacher, lecturer, and Eucharistic Minister. She was a member of the St. Stanislaus Rosary Sodality, and parish council. Dianne enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, caring mother and grandmother who made time for her family and taught them to be honest, fair, and compassionate. She took pride in her garden especially when harvesting the produce. She delighted in cooking and baking but her ultimate favorite was savoring the sweets. She also was fond of playing cards, needlework, reading, and working as a nurse. Dianne will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and Gramma. Dianne is survived by her loving husband Benedict of 46 years. Children, Lori (John) Kokett, Cindy (Jimmy) Olson, Patrick (Kristy) Lapos and Michelle (Michael) Olson all of Little Falls, Julie (Jason) Kuchar of Pine Springs, MN, Kerry (Sheldon) Atwood of Grand Forks, ND, Andrew (Megan) Lapos of Marine on Saint Croix, MN, Stephen Lapos (significant other Shelley) of Little Falls, and 21 loving grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Bernadine Wimmer of Randall; siblings: Sharon (Dave) Sherwood, Judy (Frank) Andres, James (Joanne) Wimmer, Loni (Steve) Pantzke, Mary (Jerome) Koval, and John (Peggy) Wimmer. Dianne was welcomed into her heavenly home by her father, Leo Wimmer; infant son, Brian and infant granddaughter, Joy. Pall bearers will be Frank Andres, Jr., Loren Koval, Matt Pantzke, Mike Sherwood, Richard Wimmer, Ronnie Wimmer, Joseph Adamski and Paul Lapos.

George C. Servatius, age 87 of Melrose, died peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman and Rev. Art Hoppe concelebrating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. George Cyril Servatius was born February 22, 1924 in Melrose, Minnesota to Matt and Anna (Henry) Servatius. He grew up in Melrose where he attended St. Boniface Grade School and graduated from the Melrose High School. On October 1, 1962 he married Nellie Schimnich at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. George was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He had a six piece old time dance band for over 60
Walter L. Williams
Walter L. “Butch” Williams, age 95 of Melrose, died Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 13 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Walter Leo Williams was born May 17, 1916 in Chaska, Minnesota to Peter and Lena (Finken) Williams. On July 12, 1944 he married Ramona “Mona” Welz in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Butch served in the Army during World War II. He moved to Melrose then to St. Cloud, and returned to Melrose in 1952. Butch owned and operated BeckerWilliams Standard Station in Melrose until

He also was a member of the Melrose Mutual Insurance Company, serving as President for over 45 years. Survivors include his wife, Nellie Servatius of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Anna Servatius; sisters, Eugenia Braegelmann and Bernice Servatius; and brothers, Barney, Earl, and Harry Servatius. Jack Capko
Jack Capko, 9 year old resident of Little Falls, MN died Monday, November 21 at the St. Cloud Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, November 26 at 11:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with Father Mark Innocenti officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Long Prairie, MN. Jack Capko was born in Long Prairie, Minnesota, on February 15, 2002, to Maryrose (Doroff) Capko and Jerry Capko. Jack attended Mary of Lourdes preschool, kindergarten in Swanville, and was in the 3rd grade at Mary of Lourdes Elementary School. Jack enjoyed many sports especially soccer and hockey where he was a Squirt goalie. At home, Jack helped on the farm primarily as a skid loader operator and calf nutritionist. Jack

Angeline G. “Angie” Anderson, age 78 of Grey Eagle, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held. Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Inurnment followed in the Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Angie was born on November 23, 1933 in Melrose, MN at her great grandmother’s home, Barbara Kroll, who was the local midwife. Her parents were Frances and Hubert Van Heel. Angie attended country school (known now as the Wessel school house) for the first two years of her education, boarding with her grandparents during the school year. She then attended the Red Oak Grove District #151 country school near Fairhaven and completed the 8th grade. She was married to James G. Anderson on October 13, 1953, at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. Angie and Jim purchased and operated a dairy farm in Round Prairie Township, near Grey Eagle. They operated the farm for 40 years and retired from farming in October of 1993. had a delightful sense of humor. He loved to laugh. Jack had a tender heart when it came to animals. He had a parrot named Charlie, a dog named Jackson, a horse named Stormy, and a cat named Gizmo. He was a collector of Transformers and Bakugans. His favorite color was red. Jack loved traveling with his family, and although he got to swim with dolphins and stingrays, he loved swimming in hotel pools almost just as much. Some of his favorite places to visit were Florida, Alabama, New Mexico, and most recently Yellowstone National Park. Jack died as a result of injuries sustained in a four-wheeler accident. He passed from this life to new life on Monday, November 21, 2011, surrounded by family. Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Jerome and Maryrose Capko of Little Falls, MN; brother, Jared Capko of Little Falls, MN; his grandmothers, Lorraine Doroff of Long Prairie, MN and Rosemary Capko of Swanville, MN and an uncle Lawrence Capko of Swanville, MN. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Capko and Sylvester Doroff and also by his hockey coach, Verd Anez.

Angie loved horses all of her life and enjoyed training, driving, and showing horses for many years with her husband and family. Angie devoted her life and skills to providing for her family and friends. She was an avid seamstress and quilter and known for her expertise. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and growing flowers. She was an avid bird watcher. Angie was always willing to help others, by offering care packages and personal service. Angie enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and step-grandchildren, sharing her life stories with them. Angie is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. During her lifetime, she was a member of the Lake Region Saddle Club in Alexandria, Birch Lake Riders in Grey Eagle, North Central Morgan Association in Minneapolis, Todd County NFO, and Little Sauk Legion Auxillary. She served in various officer positions with these organizations. Angie is survived by her husband of 57 years, James G. Anderson of Grey Eagle; children, Kathleen (David) Steinbach of New Rockford, ND, Steven (Sue) Anderson of Farwell, Allan (Mary Robinson) of Ladysmith, WI, Nancy (Gene Klingberg) Haley of Hoffman; three grandsons, Billy Steinbach, Garrett and Justin Haley; step-grandson, Jason Gylsen; step-great-grandchildren, Darrian Peterson, Robb and Jayden Gylsen. brothers and sisters, Alice Molitor of St. Cloud, Barbara (Rich) Retka of St. Cloud, Gordan (Jeannie) Van Heel of New Brighton, Geraldine Lyon of Mesa, AZ, and Michael Van Heel of St. Cloud; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was in preceded in death by her brother, Adelbert Van Heel; and her parents

Margaret A. Sogge
Margaret Anne Sogge, age 84 of Sauk Centre, died Monday, December 12, 2011 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota after a 4 ½ month struggle in hospitals and a rapid recovery center for multiple health issues. She was able to return home to Fairway Pines in Sauk Centre where she spent the last week of her life with Jerry, her husband of 63 ½ years. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 17 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. James Statz officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and one hour prior to the service at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by Christian Mothers at 6 p.m. and Eagles Auxiliary at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Anne Sogge was born February 25, 1927 in Bancroft, Iowa to Charles and Marie (Rammer) Skilling. She was a 1945 graduate of Windom High School and was employed for three years at First National Bank in Windom. On March 19, 1948 she married Ansel “Jerry” Sogge in Windom. After her marriage she worked at the Cottonwood County Courthouse until 1951, when they moved to a farm near Grove City. In 1960 they moved to a farm near West Union where they lived and raised their children. After retiring from farming in 1982 they moved into Sauk Centre. Many years later, they moved to Sartell where they resided for five years before returning back to Sauk Centre where their hearts belonged. Anne enjoyed quilting, gardening, baking, watching the Twins, and games shows. Along with family members she established the Sauk Centre Annual Community Christmas Dinner in the mid-
1990’s. Anne was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Sauk Centre Seniors, Sinclair Lewis Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary and the Community Concert Association. Survivors include her husband, Ansel “Jerry” Sogge of Sauk Centre; eight children, Mary Anne (Larry) Baker of Litchfield, James (Kathleen) Sogge of Paynesville, David Sogge of Blaine, Rev. Carol Jean (Rev. choreographed moves. The sound of the group is mainly bluegrass, and they always leave the audience wanting more of their entertaining presence. For those of you who have seen the movie, ‘Oh Brother, Where Art Thou’, the sound of this family’s music can be compared to the music heard throughout this particular movie. Throughout breaks in the family’s performance, Helping Hands Staff members, Shari Streit and Diane Koehn announced the winners of a number of different door prizes. After the performance, those people who brought a ‘Secret Santa’ gift with them, were to go up to the tree, and choose a wrapped gift for themselves. After everyone had opened their gifts we had a surprise visit from Santa himself. The day was concluded with a delicious Christmas lunch and desserts brought by some of our guests. We would like to thank those who took part if the festivities and to those who came for the first time. Our next luncheon will be on January 19, 2012, bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon.

Santa Claus Rocks -By Saralee Perel It started so simply, on a walk in the woods. My husband, Bob, stood in front of a massive stone boulder, stirred by its stark splendor. “ Wo u l d n ’ t you love something like this in our own backyard?” he said. “It’s so magnificent!” And when I saw the deepness of his wonderment, I swore to myself, somehow . . . I am going to make his wish happen. I had no idea where to start. Who
I hinted. Later, I saw him rummaging through cabinets looking for Kava, or some other new anti-anxiety herb on which we always spend a fortune. Three days before Christmas, I called the newspaper’s photo department and told somebody named Ron about the rock. “Why are you doing this?” he wondered. “It’s what Bob wants,” I said. Then I called the local TV station. These were not easy calls. Can you imagine explaining that Santa will deliver an 18,000 pound boulder on Christmas Eve? (You got it. Nine colossal tons.) I invited all our neighbors to greet Santa, but I wouldn’t say what he was bringing.

would? I called monument companies and gardening centers. Then I called a company I saw in the yellow pages, named Final Touch Landscaping. Stephen, the owner, didn’t act like I was too much of a lunatic when I told him I wanted the largest boulder he could find, delivered on Christmas Eve. Actually, he jumped right in. “How about we have Santa deliver it in a sleigh on a flat bed?” I loved the idea. “Where are your septic tanks?” he asked. Bob turned pale when I asked him that same question several days later. “Your gift is too heavy to go over them,”
On December 24 at two p.m., 12 pizzas arrived. I had bedecked our backyard shed with wreathes, lights, cookies and soda. At 3, I said to Bob, “It’s time.” We stood at the end of the driveway, alone. Oh no, I thought. Nobody’s coming to meet Santa. And I was so hoping we’d have a party in the shed. And then, like an image from a Dickens tale, children with their dogs emerged from the woods. Parents came out of their houses. The TV station van pulled up and the newspaper photographer arrived. I was trembling with excitement.
Then came the air horn, blasting away, as a caravan of trucks filled with families in Christmas costumes came rumbling down the street. Police closed the road to traffic. Over loud speakers, we heard “Merry Christmas Bob!” as Santa rang sleigh bells from the front of a giant flatbed which carried wooden reindeer, kids dressed as elves and a bright red sleigh with the rock. Bob’s expression was priceless. He didn’t speak for minutes. Finally, he whispered, “You bought me a rock?” “Why not?” We hugged. “It’s what you wanted.” And so, we had our party. Everyone rollicked around the boulder with overflowing plates of pizza and Oreos. Carols filtered through the air. Our story was told on that night’s local news. Our picture was in the paper with the words, “Tons of Love” underneath. It was a Christmas only dreams are made of. Late that night, we climbed the rock and sat on the top sharing cookies.
I thought of all the people that helped make this fairy tale happen and I pictured my community gathered in awe. We had all re-discovered holiday magic that day, when Santa Claus rocked our backyard. Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month Thought for Nate SchumNate feels that Drama Club is the er, son of Shelly Schumer, has been selected as the November Senior High Student of the Month at Upsala Area Schools. A senior, Nate has a history of maintaining “A Honor Roll status.” Nate is a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student and achieved honors as a member of the Dean’s List at Central Lakes College. Nate is also a member of National Honor Society (Vice President), Student Council (President), Knowledge Bowl, and Drama Club.

Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month The Upsala School staff is proud to honor Ben Blonigen as Upsala School’s November Junior High Student of the Month. Ben is the seventh grade son of Steve and Kathy Blonigen. He lives in rural Upsala with his parents and sister, Anna. Ben is an active member of his school and community. Since elementary school he has participated in band and spelling bees. Upon entering junior high, Ben was voted class secretary and joined the knowledge bowl team. He also made the A honor roll for fall quarter. Outside of school, Ben is involved with his church as a mass server and Vacation Bible School volunteer. He plays
in the community band, and is an active member of his 4-H club. He has served as club vice-president and the Federation treasurer. Becky Moe, Ben’s 4-H program coordinator says, “Ben is really blossoming as a 4-H leader and role model for others. It has been fantastic to watch Ben grow and try new opportunities in 4-H, locally and beyond. He is dependable, kind and generous with sharing his time with others. When Ben isn’t busy with school and community activities, he finds many other things to occupy his time. He enjoys playing hockey, watching football, playing piano, vegetable gardening and Legos.

Carl A. Plakut
Carl A. Plakut, 94 year old resident of Swanville, MN formerly of Sobieski, MN passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at the St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2:30 P.M. on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church Cemetery in Sobieski, MN. Military Rites were conducted by the Swanville American Legion Post #313 and the Swanville VFW Post #6037. Carl was born on February 20, 1917 in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN to the late John and Appolonia ‘Pekula’ Plakut. He grew up in Swan River Township and attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School in Sobieski, MN. At age 16, he entered the Civilian Conservation Corp “CCC” and worked in the camps for the next 4 years. He entered the US Army in Jan. 1942 and served during WW II in the European Theater until his honorable discharge in Jan. 1946. Carl returned home and was united in marriage on October 12, 1948 to Clara M. Mallak at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. The couple lived and dairy farmed in Swan River
George O’Brien
A mass of Christian burial for George A. O’Brien, 75, will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011, 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Visitation is at the church beginning at 9:00 a.m. George died Wednesday, December 7, 2011 from complications due to a fall. George was born in Aberdeen, S.D. to George and Sylvia (Danielson) O’Brien. The family moved to Melrose in 1938 to run the Melrose Theatre. George graduated from Melrose High School and St. Thomas College. After serving in the U.S. Army, he worked for theatres in Iowa. While working for Commercial Credit Equipment Corp., he was transferred to Baltimore, where he met and married Barbara Schisler in 1963. They returned to Melrose in 1967 to reopen the Melrose Theatre after his father’s death. Following the theater’s closure that same year, George became general manager of the Melrose Catholic Deanery Credit Union (later Melrose Credit Union), and was instrumental

Since 2009, Carl has lived at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. After his retirement, Carl enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, baking and helping out on the Maciej farm. He went to Mass daily. His great enjoyment was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 1983 he joined the Freeport State Bank and remained there until his retirement. In 1971 he became executive director of the Housing & Redevelopment Authority of the City of Melrose, where he remained involved until his retirement in September 2011. His proudest achievement there was converting Rose View Manor to a smoke-free facility—the first HUD building in the country to do so. George was mayor of Melrose for two terms, from 1995 through 2002. While mayor he recognized the need for services for the growing Latino community and started a nonprofit, Communities Connecting Cultures, to help recent arrivals adjust to their new community and find the services they needed to be healthy, educated, content and productive citizens of Melrose. George was known for his Irish humor, long-winded storytelling and his sense of civic engagement. He could be seen dressed as St. Patrick during the annual St. Patrick’s Day parades held by the local Irish minority community. He was involved in restarting Boy Scouts in Melrose. George loved sailing on Birch Lake, scuba diving, taking long walks and riding his scooter around town. He will be dearly missed by all. Survivors are wife Barbara O’Brien, daughter Kelly O’Brien of Minneapolis, son Kevin (Lois) O’Brien of Lindstrom, grandchildren Matthew and Bridget O’Brien of Lindstrom, sister Kay O’Brien Heinen of St. Cloud, nephews John Heinen of Portland, Ore. and Steven Heinen of Aurora, Ill. Edward “Ed” L. Bromeling Edward “Ed” L. Bromeling, 78 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away We d n e s d a y, December 7, 2011 at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie with Rev. Andrew Brown officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Edward “Ed” L. Bromeling was born on October 8, 1933, in Eagle Lake, Minnesota to the late Lorin and Dorothy (Brooks) Bromeling. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Following his schooling, Ed worked with his father on the family farm, until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1956-1959. He was united in marriage to Marlene (Mollenhauer) on October 17,1959. The couple farmed with his parents in the Blue Earth County, raising and showing Registered Milking Shorthorns, until moving to Long Prairie, MN in 1974. Ed sold seed corn and was also a 4-H Leader for about 30 years, he loved doing both. and he was very active in 4- H with his children. He worked for Todd County for 1 year when
he decided to farm full time. After semiretiring he went to work for his brother at the Whole Farm Coop, were he loved to go and visit. Ed enjoyed farming and spending time with his children, grand children, great grand children. He loved playing cards and visiting with all his buddies in town, especially at the feed store. Ed always had a joke to tell and would always give anyone a helping hand. He was a very kind hearted man and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He especially will be missed by his two youngest grand children, who spent a lot of time with him telling stories or just watching grandpa’s favorite baseball team, the Twins. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlene; sons, Lorin (Judy) Bromeling of South Dakota, Lloyd (Kathy) Bromeling of Illinois; daughters, Donna Wener and special friend, Bill of Burtrum, MN, Debbie (Val) Pachulla of Little Falls, MN Danica Bromeling of Little Falls, MN and Denise (Byron) Gill of Swanville, MN; brother, Robert ( Karen) Bromeling of Browerville, MN; sisters, Alice (Jim) Waite of Elk River, MN and Diane (Gary) Lindenfelser of North Dakota; 18 grand children, 4 greatgrandchildren and sister-in-law, Raberta Bromeling of Bertha, MN. LPGE TV: The school has a television station? Well, not quite. But, through the wonders of technology, anyone with access to the Internet can watch selected school events on their computer; this is the topic of this week’s column. The Technology Department of the LPGE School District utilizing existing equipment and free resources on the Internet is making live and recorded events available to the public. While we prefer that people attend in person, being able to watch an event live on your computer or a recording after-the-fact is a great alternative. All you need is a computer capable of streaming video and a high-speed Internet connection and you are in business. Simply go to the school website (www.lpge.k12.mn.us) and select LPGE TV on the left hand side and you will be taken to another webpage where you
will be able to choose your event. The one drawback is that you will have to view a commercial but almost all videos on the Internet have an advertisement before the video begins and the advertisers pay for the site. Students are gaining hands-on experience by running the cameras and based on the number of views shown by the website, this is already a popular service. In addition to this public service, Charter Cable subscribers can get upto-date information on channel 8 (local access channel) and the community can get announcements and events put up as well. The technology staff, again, is managing this at no cost to the school. Thanks to Mitchell Ganske for spearheading these projects and for going above and beyond what it is expected of him.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township December 5, 2011 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, John Young, Mary Ann Primus & Bev Eggerth. Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. John made the motion to accept the agenda. Ray made the second. Motion carried. Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 7, 2011 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as presented. John made the second. Minutes approved. Zoning Report: Bev reported she had new zoning books and one book will be placed at the library and the ordinance will be put on the county website if we can give Bev permission to do so. Mary Ann will send letter to the County to allow Bev access to the townships website. Shawn Ehlert was present to request a permit; however, the property is in shoreland and he will need to check with the county. He also asked about signs and was informed the signs could not be larger than 32 sq. feet and must be 10 ft. from the road right of way; it is also his responsibility to remove the signs when no longer needed. Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included 6 claims for a total of $16,346.15. Discussion on which roads ditches were cut by Hoffman Tree Service. Ray reminded board members that property owners need to be informed when brush cutting is going to be done. Ray made a motion to pay the claims as listed, John made the second. Motion carried. Notice of the Sales Tax exemption that went into effect on Sept. 30, 2011. Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of October 31, 2011: $107,744.53; Checks cleared: 14, $6,036.00; Deposits including interest: $96,648.33; Balance as of November 30, 2011: $198,356.86; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $198,356.86; CD Balance: $41,661.93 John made the motion to ac-

All of the road projects for this year have been completed. Ron received a call about brush on Ascot Road, Ron removed brush from the road but felt the ditch needed to be cleaned up. Ron then got a call about rocks dumped in the ditch on Ascot Drive. The supervisor asked the clerk to prepare a letter to property owner to clean the brush out of the roadway before it creates problems for snow plow drivers. The rocks will need to be removed prior to spring field work. The clerk will prepare a letter to property owner. The resolution for the speed sign on Breezy Drive was discussed and approved on a 3-0 vote by the supervisors. The advertising signs on the traffic signs on 341st Ave. were discussed and although they are informational and can be placed on traffic signs, the owners should have obtained permission from the road authority before posting. The clerk will prepare a letter to business owner. Additional agenda items: Ray attended the fire board mtg. He reported that the Fire Dept. has had no large expenses recently and now have a surplus. He stated their plan was to pay down the loan for the new roof. They are still looking for new first responders. John checked into the Region 5 grant but found it was not something the township was interested in at this time. Public Comment: None. Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. After ringing ten doorbells, he had sold nine dustpans. As it succeeded, he made 27 other items and started Rubbermaid Company, a multimillion dollar business.
