How to overcome the jitters and not choke -By Harvey Mackay
I recently came across a graduation speech by the valedictorian of a university law school. He began his remarks by acknowledging that he had difficulty deciding what “wisdom” to impart to his fellow graduates. He said he had consulted several quotation books and speaker’s guides but had come away uninspired. He reviewed all the cases of law the class had studied and had found nothing that he felt was appropriate on such an important occasion. At a loss for any inspiring thoughts, he sat down at his kitchen table eating biscuits. And right in front of him on the opened roll of refrigerated biscuit dough, he spotted the belief that he knew he and his fellow graduates had in common and that he felt was worthy of the occasion.

The package, he said, had this message, “Keep cool. But do not freeze.” And with that he thanked all assembled and returned to his seat, amid rousing applause. Freezing up – also referred to as choking – in important situations happens to all of us. We regularly hear about golf superstars who blow a tap-in putt or $16 million-a-year basketball players missing a crucial shot. Choking also happens many times in business. How about the seasoned sales rep that botches a million-dollar sale? Or the customer service rep that makes a problem worse rather than fixing it? Many times choking is triggered by thinking too much. Now neuroscience explains why. We used to assume that if the incentive is increased, the will to perform will automatically increase. Not so, according to a study that appeared in the journal “Neuron.” A simple arcade game was used for the test. At first, performance steadily improved as incentives increased. The extra money proved motivating. But this effect only lasted for a little while. Once the rewards passed a certain threshold, scientists observed a surprising

decrease in success. The extra cash hurt performance, and the subjects began to choke. Brain activity became inversely related to the magnitude of the reward. Bigger incentives led to less excitement. The study stated that: “The subjects were victims of loss aversion. That’s the well-documented psychological phenomenon that losses make us feel bad more than gains make us feel good. Instead of being excited by their future riches, the subjects were fretting over their possible failure… they care too much. They really want to win, and so they get unravelled by the pressure of the moment. The simple pleasures of the game have vanished… The fear of losing is what remains.” That attitude is completely counterproductive. One of my favorite aphorisms is “If you want to triple your success rate, you have to triple your failure rate.” Fear of failure is paralyzing. If you “choke” when you’re in the spotlight or you start shaking, blushing or having shortness of breath when you’re on stage, check out the story by Karen Haywood Queen in “Better Homes and Gardens” about pianist Miriam Elfstron. She suffered the jitters so bad that she had to wear mittens all day the days of her performances because her hands shook and became cold. Eventually, her piano instructor taught her how to control her anxiety. Her recommendations included: • Think positively. Practice making positive statements about what you are doing and avoid using negative words or self-talk. For instance, say “I am confident,” not “I don’t feel nervous.” • Practice performing through the inevitable slips. It’s a performance. If you mess up the world won’t come to an end. Get comfortable recovering from slips and memory lapses. • Practice in front of smaller groups first. Don’t perform for the first time for a crowd of 500. It’s too much pressure. • Reduce muscle tension to reduce
mental tension. It’s all connected, so if your body is relaxed, there’s a good chance your mind will be relaxed as well. • Adopt a ritual. Carry a lucky charm. Wear your lucky shoes. Touch your nose before you begin. Dribble the ball three times before the game starts, like Michael Jordan. Whatever works for you is OK. • Don’t be a perfectionist. Don’t visualize a perfect performance, because then you will feel like you’ve failed if you make even a small mistake. Instead, picture a performance where you do well by overcoming small obstacles along the way. Mackay’s Moral: Don’t let choking suck the life out of your career. Obituaries Loretta R. Gieske
Loretta R. Gieske, age 92 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the CentraCare (St. Michael’s) Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 4 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating, Rev. Eli Gieske concelebrating, and Deacon Tom McFadden assisting. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Loretta Rose Radermacher was born January 8, 1922 in Avon, Minnesota to John and Frances (Jacques) Radermacher. She was united in marriage to Bernard Gieske on January 12, 1943 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Padua. Loretta was a homemaker who wrote the column, “Over the Kitchen Sink” for the Sauk Centre Herald and enjoyed writing local histories and for various organizations. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre where she served as a lector. Loretta was active with the Christian Mothers, St. Theresa’s Mission Society,

Loretta enjoyed sewing and quilting, flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, traveling, playing cards, Scrabble and dancing. Survivors include her children, Daniel (Gilda) Gieske of Sauk Centre, Kenneth (Deb) Gieske of Sauk Centre, Carol Gieske of Combermere, Ontario, Canada, Allen (Heidi) Gieske of Lindstrom, Gabe (Barb) Gieske of Sauk Centre, Kathleen (Deacon Tom) McFadden of Sauk Centre, and Thomas (Julie) Gieske of Sauk Centre; 17 grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Gieske on January 31, 2009; brothers, Norman, Sylvester, Raymond, and John Radermacher; and sister, Virginia Balego. Serving as casket bearers were Jeremy Gieske, Josh McFadden, Phil McFadden, David McFadden, Kristofor Gieske, Ben Gieske, and John Gieske. Cross bearer was Elizabeth McFadden and scripture bearer was Jason Gieske. Honorary bearers were the Christian Mothers and St. Theresa’s Mission Group. Servers were Caleb and Nathan Gieske and readers were Heather Krohn, Amy Gieske, and Becky Gieske. Gift bearers were Miriam Gieske and Christine McFadden. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Regina A. Caspers, age 91 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 6 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Regina Ann Zenzen was born May 26, 1923 in Elrosa, Minnesota to Henry and Elizabeth (Tschida) Zenzen. She was united in marriage to Werner Caspers on August 23, 1949 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Regina was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, St. Mary’s Christian Mothers, Poor Souls Society, and the Holy Rosary Society. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, baking
and camping. Survivors include her children, Irene (Mark) Eilers of Foley, Diane (Paul) Kortan of Sauk Centre, Marlene Harty (friend, Keith Erdman) of Long Lake, and Delores Wendlandt (friend, Vince Hinnenkamp) of Meire Grove; grandchildren, Randy Eilers (friend, Kelley Mattson), Jody (Jeremy) Anderson, Sara (Derek) Payonk, Jason (Michelle) Kortan, Michelle (Steve) Ruegemer, Melanie (Jeff) Peters, Jeremy (Kim) Kortan, David (Jenny) Unger, and Stacy (Brian) Gilbert; 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and sister, Bernadette Fyle of Meire Grove. Regina was preceded in death by her husband, Werner Caspers on September 25, 2013; parents; and brother, Sylvester Zenzen. Serving as casket bearers were Jason Kortan, Jeremy Kortan, Randy Eilers, David Unger, Jeff Peters, Steve Ruegemer, Jeremy Anderson, and Derek Payonk. Cross bearers and scripture bearers were Melanie Peters with Emily and Leah. Gift bearers were Sasha Unger, Zachary Ruegemer, and Cierra Kortan. Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Kevin L. Unger, age 56 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 5 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Kevin Leon Unger was born June 10, 1958 in Downey, California to Francis and Dorothy (Felling) Unger. He was united in marriage to Jeannie Towle on July 15, 2006 in their backyard in Sauk Centre. Kevin owned and operated several businesses including Unger Construction, Countryside Custom Cycles and other business ventures as well. He was passionate about his HarleyDavidson motorcycles, especially his
favorite, “Woodchuck”. Kevin was a man of many talents who enjoyed working with his hands. He enjoyed ice fishing, riding his snow cat and working in his Bobcat, and loved doing projects at his home. Survivors include his wife, Jeannie Unger of Sauk Centre; children, Camilla Unger of St. Cloud, Scott (fiancé, Kelsey) Rohde of Minneapolis, Candice (fiancé, Derrick) Rohde of Nelson, David (Jenny) Unger of Sauk Centre, and Stacey Gilbert of St. Bonifacius; granddaughter, Sasha; mother, Dorothy Unger of Sauk Centre; brothers and sisters, Ken (Linda) Unger of Sauk Centre, Karen (fiancé, Dana) Petermeier of Anoka, Karla (Kevin) Kruger of Andover, Fran (Mary) Unger of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Kris (Kevin) Notch of Lincoln, Rhode Island; and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, and his loyal sidekick, “Max”. Kevin was preceded in death by his father, Francis Unger on February 28, 2012; and father-in-law, Allen Towle on June 26, 2011. Arrangments were with Patton-Schad Funeral Home of Sauk Centre.

Lucille Hildegard Eibensteiner
Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Lucille H i l d e g a r d Eibensteiner, age 82 of Albany took place at 11 AM, Wednesday, August 6th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Brad Jenniges, OSB officiated, and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Lucille died at the Albany Hospital Saturday afternoon after a two year battle with cancer. Arrangements were made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany. Lucille was born August 23rd, 1931 to Peter and Catherine (Notch) Van Heel in Freeport. She married Werner Eibensteiner on August 27, 1951 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Anthony. The couple lived on a farm near Sauk Centre after marriage but also lived in Waite Park and Woodbury before eventually moving back to Albany where she lived the rest of her life. During her life Lucille worked at a variety of locations including Shopko, Brown and Bigelow, F.S.I., the Albany Bakery, the Red Cross, and Cracker Barrel before retiring in 1999. Lucille was a very active person
with a variety of hobbies and interests. She had a love of the outdoors which was shown through her beautiful gardens over the years. She also greatly enjoyed fishing, especially for Sunfish. She could catch more sunnies with a drop line and sweet corn than others could catch with real tackle and bait. She also had a love of music especially classic country and bluegrass. What she will be remembered most for however will be her amazing heart and her wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany where she was also involved in Christian Mothers. She is survived by her husband Werner Eibensteiner, Albany; her children Werner (Marilyn) Eibensteiner Jr., Maple Grove; Gordon (Janice) Eibensteiner, Slayton; Jeanne (Allen) Stangler, Albany; Lonny “Butch” (Audrey) Eibensteiner, Lino Lakes; Dale (Brenda) Eibensteiner, St. Joseph; Jim (Marla) Eibensteiner, Elk River; Lu (Joe) Rademacher, New Munich; Shelly (Russ) Rooney, Belgrade; Susan (Whit) Bagley, Greer, S.C.; her 29 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren; and her sister Delores Tamm, Albany. She is preceded in death by her parents Peter and Catherine VanHeel, her brothers Walter, Leander, Ray, and Ernest VanHeel, her sisters Eleanor Weber, Marcella Schriefels, Juletta Hentges, and her grandsons Chris, Scott, and infant Russell Eibensteiner.
Marcellus John Michael Theisen
Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Marcellus John Michael Theisen, age 97 of Upsala will take place at 11 AM, Thursday, August 7th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Father John Odero will officiate, and burial will take place at St. Francis of Assisi Parish Cemetery following the service. Marcellus died at the St. Cloud Hospital Sunday morning with his family by his side. There will be a visitation from 10-11 AM Thursday morning at the church. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Upsala. Marcellus was born April 6th, 1917 to Math and Catherine Theisen in Rockville Township. He married Frances Schramel on September 23rd, 1941 at Lake Henry. Soon after his marriage he served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 fighting in the Pacific theater during WWII. After his time in the service, the couple lived in Cold Spring, Regal, and St. Francis before retiring to Upsala in 1982. In life, Marcellus worked as a granite cutter for Cold Spring Granite for 6 years before purchasing his land near St. Francis where he his wife Frances farmed for over 30 years. He took great pride in working his land, but what he took the most pride in was his family. He was a family man above all else and especially loved any time he got to spend with his grandchildren. He was also a very active member of his communities and church. He served as a school board member for Country School District 2056, a school board member for

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, Do you recommend a credit freeze in order to protect against identity theft? -Eric Dear Eric, I absolutely recommend doing that, especially if you’re not borrowing money anymore. However, putting a freeze on your credit report only provides partial protection against identity theft. Identity theft is where someone, for example, signs up for a credit card in your name. If Joe Crook signs an application with your name and address, and the credit card company issues the card without checking — they blind-issue cards about seven out of 10 times — then the card will be issued to the thief. Having your credit frozen does nothing to stop that from happening. Still, if they check your credit and it’s frozen, chances are they won’t issue the card. I’d also recommend having a good identity theft protection program in place. I have it on myself and all my team members at the office. If you don’t have this, and someone gets a card in your name, the credit card company will demand that you pay the bill. You can insist it’s not you, but that won’t do much good. Then, you’ll have to go through the hassle of filling out affidavits and police reports. You may get out of paying for it in the end, but you’ll still have to spend dozens, if not hundreds, of hours dealing with the credit card company trying to get the whole mess straightened out! -Dave Dear Dave, I make $30,000 a year. hours and facing additional pressure. The balance on your car is awfully high. My general rule is that you don’t want to own vehicles equaling half or more of your annual income. If I’m in your shoes, I’d sell that car and move down to a little beater for a while. I’m not talking about a rattletrap piece of junk, just something lots less expensive. You can find a decent used car to fit the bill, and that would get rid of a big chunk of debt in a hurry. At this point, I think you just need to feel like you’re making some measureable progress. Sometimes, that means throwing a stick of dynamite into the middle of your life. Also, try keeping your debt snowball list where you’ll see it on a regular basis. I knew one lady who kept it on the fridge, so she could look at all the little red lines drawn through things she had paid off. Minnesota Authors at Upsala Heritage Days Upsala’s 2014 Heritage Days celebration is adding a new feature this year - local Minnesota authors on hand to talk writing and sell books. They will set up in City Park at 11 AM on Saturday August 9 and remain until around 2, or until all books are sold. “It’s the trial run of a new venture, sponsored by Friends of the Library,“ said events coordinator Wanda Erickson. “We’re excited to introduce Minnesota authors to Upsala, and Upsala to Minnesota authors.” One author is Jerry Mevissen of Nimrod, MN. His first book Nimrod Chronicles was published by North Star Press of St. Cloud in 2003. He followed that with two collections of short stories: Broken Hart and Good Shepherd, published by Jackpine Writers of Park Rapids. “Both are fiction,” Mevissen says, “but in no small way are they inspired by local events and neighbors. Veterans facility gets new funding
The Eagles Healing Nest at Sauk Centre received good news last week when the Stearns Count Board passed a resolution that allows funding for Group Residential Housing (GRH) at the facility. This is state money that flows through the county, and it will give the Healing Nest a more stable and long-term source of funding, allowing them to offer more services to the 42 veterans now living there. In its first two years of operation at the former girls’ school on the north edge of Sauk Centre, the Nest has relied mainly on donations to fund its operation. Melony Butler, administrator at the Nest, had this to say following the unanimous vote by the Stearns County Board July 29, “Thanks to all for believing and listening, but most importantly, for taking action. This shows that Minnesota does lead the way to positive solutions (for our veterans).” Multiple levels of government were involved in getting this new source of funding for the Healing Nest. On the state level, several legislators worked on the project, in addition to the Department of Human Services and the Department Veterans Affairs. Stearns County also stepped up, and after numerous meetings with their

Department of Human Services, details of the agreement were reached. Initially, it’s for one year, but the hope is that the great success shown so far by the Nest will help make this a permanent source of funding, one that could possibly be expanded in the future. It’s so great to see veterans helping other veterans at the Eagles Nest. There’s a trust among veterans that is sometimes hard to duplicate, and that trust is utilized at the Nest to help with the healing process. Another of the lesser-known funding bills passed during the recently-completed legislative session will provide money directly to counties to help with local efforts in fighting Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). The total is approximately $10 million and is based on the number of public boat launches in each county. Douglas County, with its 59 launches, is set to received $120,000 this year and $268,000 next year. The numbers for Pope County are $40,000 this year and $89,000 next year for their 19 boat launches. And the allocations for Stearns County, with 52 launch sites, are $115,000 this year and $255,000 next year. While driving through Padua last Sunday morning on the way to Greenwald for “Barley Days,” we were surprised to see water standing in fields. We later found out that area received a beneficial rain the day before, with amounts ranging over one inch! It’s amazing how quickly we

went from “too wet” to “we surely could use a nice rain” to “we need rain badly.” And the usual form of precipitation this time of year is scattered thunderstorms, with some areas receiving rain and others getting little or nothing. Saw some harvesting of small grain, too, as our string of hot days has pushed crop maturity. Last weekend was busy, indeed. County fairs took place in both Stearns and Pope counties, and we were at parades in Forada, Albany, and Greenwald. Don’t know the exact reason, but parade attendance this year seems to be higher than ever. It could partly be due to the weather, which has been nearly ideal for parade watching. Often we are faced with unforeseen temptations that present choices we never thought we would have to face. But we do not face life alone. We have the protection of God, the power of the risen Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit to rescue us from defeat. We cannot avoid the trials or tragedies of life. Nor do we need to face them alone. God is there to protect and defend us. Victory is ours when our lives are in God’s hands.

City Clerk/Treasurer Reva Mische. The City Council meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson. Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded by Council Member Robert Maciej to accept the minutes from the July 7th, 2014 Regular City Council Meeting. Motion carried unanimously. Back to School ‘Sleep Boot Camp’ Preparing your child for the first week back to school takes more preparation than filling a back pack with pencils and paper. It means getting their sleep schedule adjusted to getting up earlier. For most children the time to start the transition to the new schedule is one to two weeks before school starts. Begin by having your child go to bed one hour earlier than his or her current bedtime and get up one hour earlier for at least a couple of days. Then, move up the bedtime and wake time earlier again every couple days until the child is getting up at the new “school” sched-

Helpful suggestions for getting to sleep earlier: • no electronics 1 hour before bedtime • absolutely no texting or talking on the phone in bed at night • avoid caffeine • aerobic exercise should be completed at least an hour or two before bedtime • reading before bedtime is great • a light bedtime snack is okay • straighten up the bedroom a little bit, wash the sheets and pillow case and make the bedroom feel comfy and safe • black out shades can darken the room (it is hard to fall asleep with sunlight pouring into the window) • keep a comfortable room temperature • keep a regular bedtime and wake time • do not let your child sleep in too much on weekends or else they will not be able to fall asleep on a Sunday night before school on Monday morning. Having a routine when getting up reinforces good sleep habits. Children who eat breakfast perform better on achievement tests and have better concentration. “Being a positive role model for your child helps set a lifetime of healthy habits.” says Troy Payne, MD, FAASM, medical director of the St. Cloud Hospital Sleep Center. By Mike Kurre, DNR Mentoring Program Coordinator Q: I heard about the DNR’s youth waterfowl hunt. How does the program work? A: Experienced mentors take youth ages 12 to 15 out hunting on Minnesota Youth Waterfowl Day on Saturday, Sept. 13. Youth learn about waterfowl habitat and how to hunt safely and have fun. We’ve found that mentors can have a profoundly positive experience on youth who show an interest in hunting. Early positive experiences help keep youth going back into the duck blind, field or deer woods year after year as they grow up and as adults. For the youth waterfowl hunt, the application deadline is Monday, Aug. 11. When a youth applies, their name is placed in a lottery in case there are too many who want to hunt, but preference is given to new hunters. Once chosen for a hunt, the youth and a parent or guardian go to an orientation that includes waterfowl identification, calling techniques, decoy arrangements, ethics and more on Friday, Sept. 12. The hunts take place on the following day in several areas around the state and in the
Twin Cities metro area. Ducks Unlimited, the U.S. National Wildlife Service, Minnesota Horse & Hunt Club, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have teamed up to offer the hunts. Find more information and the application form at www.mndnr.gov/ discover.
