Tips to overcome hiring struggle -By Harvey Mackay In case you haven’t noticed, there is a battle going on across America. It’s a battle to attract workers amid nationwide staff shortages. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has termed this a “national economic emergency.” Everywhere you look, there’s a “help wanted” sign prominently displayed. Onthe-spot interviews to bring candidates on board quickly, hiring bonuses, offers of benefits that were unheard of just months ago. Companies are going to great lengths to entice people to join their teams. Target Corporation recently announced plans to cover the cost of tuition, fees and textbooks for part- and full-time workers at more than 40 institutions. It is also covering advanced degrees, paying up to $10,000 each year for master’s programs at these schools. Other major companies like Walmart, Chipotle and Starbucks have also announced similar debt-free education programs. The video monitors on the gas pumps at Sam’s Club used to just post special prices on merchandise. Now, they are loaded with pleas for applicants and plenty of incentives to coax them to join the company. I recently called a top restaurant in downtown Minneapolis for a reservation on a Monday night. The owner told me they had to close on Mondays because he can’t get enough staff to open seven days a week. Another eatery I frequent now has employment opportunities listed on the meal tab. They hope some of their hungry customers also have an appetite for a job.

Companies need to employ creative tools like never before to attract employees. For example, our envelope manufacturing company hired a plane for four hours to fly over Mount Pleasant, Iowa, where we have a large manufacturing facility. The small plane carried a sign behind it that read “Sky’s the limit @ MackayMitchell.com.” We’ve implemented many other strategies, such as hiring an outside marketing firm to manage a social media hiring campaign, implementing an employee referral bonus program, offering signing bonuses of $5,000 to $20,000 for key employees and putting a huge “We’re hiring” sign outside our Minneapolis plant. We now pay our employees $3,000 if they find a worker who stays a minimum of 90 days. Additionally, we are trying a new referral program at our Iowa facility that will pay employees an additional hourly amount for finding workers. Amazon is reportedly offering a $1,000 signing bonus and Uber and Lyft have also offered large bonuses to get people driving again. I’ve read and heard of companies that rented billboards, are advertising on radio and TV and embarked on social media campaigns. I learned from Andrew Eklund, founder and CEO of Ciceron (ciceron.com), a digital agency in Minneapolis, that his business is expanding because “recruiting for open positions has been a nightmare. We have begun using the same tools and tech we use to highly target audiences for commerce and leads in marketing to attract candidates for open positions. Candidates are scarce, and those who are available have bargaining power.” Many companies are partnering with professional recruiters because of their considerable connections. Others are contacting former employees who left on good terms. Last January I wrote a book titled “Getting a Job is a Job,” but clearly the landscape has changed. Workers can now pick and choose among a whole host of opportunities.
Most, if not all industries, are seeing work shortages, so companies have had to also do a lot of things to attract workers, like working shorter hours and fewer days; paid time off; improved benefits including higher salaries, quarterly and yearly bonuses, offering free day care and 401(k) matching programs; options to work from home; free accommodations and hotel stays; free smart phones, bikes and food; and so on. Some companies are even offering money for applicants to show up for interviews! Increased training and apprenticeships help to get prospective workers in the door. But then the challenge is to retain those new hires with new skills. Once they become more marketable, it’s often on to the next opportunity. To combat the revolving door, organizations are offering additional benefits and bonuses after six or 12 months. The cost of training new employees exceeds the cost of extra pay. Employers have to understand that we are in a different landscape. The cost of doing business is going up, but the cost of doing no business is a downward spiral. Hiring the best people, or training them to be the best people, is an investment that every business must be prepared to make. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne A Summer Afternoon
On a rather hot summer noon about 70 years ago, a young farm kid shuffled across the yard, toward the machine shed, which contained a couple of items which needed to get his attention. One of the items was a fly trap that he had built. It was working very well and the bait of fish guts still were sending out their rotten stink to draw the flies. The bait, in addition to the 2 inch layer of flies that had accumulated on the bottom of the trap over the last 2 days, made the trap more effective with each hour. Tomorrow the trap would be emptied and the chickens will have a banquet, the bait will be replaced and the process will begin again. Happiness and satisfaction from the success of this trap may not be shared by everyone, but it really made the kid feel good. The other item requiring his attention was a John Deere H with a mounted corn cultivator. After checking the radiator and filling the gas tank, the tractor was ready to get started. A check of the condition of the cultivator shovels and adjusting their width got the cultivator ready to go. There was a 12 acre cornfield that had been planted in a checked pattern and needed to be cross cultivated. The H was used to do the second to last cultivating because the corn was still short enough to easily
pass under the back axle of the H. Cross cultivating required much more movement of the steering wheel, which had about 20 degrees of free play, but was what we had. The other tractor with a cultivator was a John Deere B, which was usually used to do the final corn cultivation, since it moved faster, had a rear axle that was higher than the H and could move more dirt to hill the corn rows which would cover the smaller weeds that had appeared. Time to start the H. This was more difficult with the cultivator mounted on the tractor. The H started by having the operator slide on the choke and manually turn the flywheel until it started. The cultivator made this more difficult. It started! Driving down the field road to the field required going through a water puddle. It was always fun to approach the puddle, since it was ringed by barn swallows gathering mouthfuls of mud to carry to the barn to create nests. They flew around chirping until the tractor had passed and returned to their construction projects. A striped gopher is sitting on the edge of the road trying to figure out what that noisy thing was doing on his road. As it came closer it seemed the best decision was to disappear into the grass. A snake had recently crossed the road leaving a curvy trail in the sand. Large brown flying grasshoppers flew out of the way and a couple of smaller green grasshoppers decided that it would be fun to catch a ride on the tractor. There was always something happening. Got to the field. Released the lever and am cultivating. Good to get started, but realize that the constant bounce from previous cultivating will make this a long afternoon. Oh well, the job needs to be done, it's part of my contribution to the success

A character in the movie “Overcomer” asked this question to a believer in Jesus Christ. The believer went on to explain what he did; he was a teacher, a basketball coach, and a husband and father. Then the guy, who was in the hospital, asked “but if that was taken away from you, who would you be? How would you define your life? If your job is taken from you and your spouse died along with your children, how would you then define who you are? When it comes down to it, many of us leave Jesus out of our lives. In fact, if I might be so bold as to say, many “believers” leave God out of their daily lives all together. So, it is only natural to not think of Him defining who we are. Ephesians 2:4-7 defines who we are in Christ Jesus, let Him define who you are. “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we are dead in transgressions- it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of his grace,

Duane A. Shay
Duane A. Shay, age 81 of Albany, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at his home in Albany, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 18 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date. Duane August Shay was born October 5, 1939 in Albany, Minnesota to Daniel and Catherine (Kohorst) Shay. He was united in marriage to Mary Lou Beuning on June 10, 1961 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. Duane, Mary Lou, and the four boys lived in Ponca City, Oklahoma while Duane worked for Blattner and Sons. The family moved back to Albany in 1971. Duane worked at Blattner’s for ten years and was employed with Kraft Foods for 27 years. He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Duane enjoyed fishing, going to auction sales, baking on the holidays, and took great pride in his manicuring his yard. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Duane always had candy handy for his grandkids. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Lou; children, Wayne (Wendy) of Melrose, Steven (Donna) of Albany, Brian (Juliet) of St. Cloud, Melissa (Kenny) Gamble of Cold Spring, and Jason (Chrissy) of Albany; 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with two on the way; brother, Danny Shay; and sisters, Kathleen (Ed) Ostendorf, Mary Jane (Paul) Fischer, Helen (Walter) Fields, Donna (Rollie) Carlson, Diana Shay, and Carol (Dick) Skare. Duane was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roderick Shay; brother, Dale Shay; father and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Viola Beuning; brother-in-law, Greg Beuning; and sister-in-law, Vera Von Wahlde. Thomas D. “Tom” Jacobson, age 77 of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 27 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Blue Earth, Minnesota. Military honors will be provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Thomas David Jacobson was born May 5, 1944 in Blue Earth, Minnesota to Virgil and Alice (Wagener) Jacobson. He graduated from East Chain High School in East Chain, Minnesota. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army in April of 1963 and was honorably discharged in April of 1966. He was united in marriage to Janet Collins on November 5, 1966 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Guckeen, Minnesota. Tom furthered his education at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, earning his bachelor’s degree in Business. He worked at ITT Shadow in Eden Prairie, retiring in 1999. Tom and Janet retired to their lake home on Little Birch Lake near Melrose. Tom was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, especially the Minnesota Gophers, woodworking, traveling, but most of all, loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Janet Jacobson of Melrose; sons, Thomas (Kimberly) Jacobson, Jr. of Eden Prairie, Paul (Megan) Jacobson of Fairfield, Iowa, and Chad (Kris) Jacobson of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Thomas III, Elizabeth, Abbigale, Mikaela, Chance, Isabella, and Cadon; sister, Patricia (Thomas) Garvey; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Sager and Karen (Jim) Oltman; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Virginia Guphil and Deborah Ritter. Memorials are preferred to the Little Birch Lake Association. Virginia M. Klaphake, age 92 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at church. Virginia Magdalene Stueve was born March 24, 1929 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Frances (Renneker) Stueve. She attended country school for eight years and then furthered her education through a home study program. On August 30, 1949 she was united in marriage to Ervin Klaphake at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Virginia was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and St. Mary’s Christian Mothers. She volunteered at the Melrose Area Museum for over 30 years. She worked as a cook at the Golden Living Home in New Munich. Virginia loved playing cards, bowling, and dancing. She loved her family and always made the holidays special by her cooking and decorating. She was an excellent baker and made many a pie and cookies. Virginia endured hard times, but despite hardships, she had a great joy for life. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Virginia will live in the hearts of her children, Wayne (Ruth) Klaphake of Melrose, Linda (Dave) Wenker of Melrose, Randy (Donna) Klaphake of Royalton, Neal (Karen) Klaphake of Melrose, Glen (Deb) Klaphake of Melrose, and Jeff (Collette) Klaphake of Melrose; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and brother, Arnold Stueve of Freeport. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Klaphake on February 23, 2019; parents; son, Daniel Klaphake on July 10, 1972; great-grandson, Jack Klaphake; sister, Donna Jesh; and brother, Clarence Stueve. Serving as casket bearers will be Andrew Klaphake, Aaron Klaphake, Nicholas Klaphake, Jonathan Klaphake, Ethan Klaphake, Emmett Klaphake, Joshua Klaphake, and Zachary Klaphake. Frederick J. Lentz, 91 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Bridgeway Estates in Little Falls, MN surrounded by his loved ones. A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Pastor Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial was at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Caring for Fred and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Swanville, MN. Frederick “Fred” James Lentz, Jr. was born on March 3, 1930 to the late Frederick (Fred) Sr. and Lydia (Rahn) Lentz in Burnhamville, Township, Todd County, Minnesota. Fred attended school in Swanville through the eighth grade, where he met the love of his life, Eunice Johnson. Fred started farming in his teenage years to help support his family. Fred married Eunice on November 24, 1951, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN. They had four children: Richard, Elaine, Kenneth, and Jean. In June of 1952, he entered the Army and was stationed in Bamberg, Germany. He achieved the rank of Corporal during his tenure in the Army. He served his country until May of 1954, when he and Eunice settled on his family’s farm. While farming he worked as an auto mechanic at Grey Eagle Motors, Loven’s Service, and Lentz Auto, which he and his eldest son built on the homestead. He retired from farming in 1990. Fred ended his working career as a ground’s keeper and handyman at the Long Prairie Golf Course. Fred loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed his winters in Texas, watching airplanes, traveling and was a John Deere enthusiast. Fred and Eunice spent many hours on Sunday drives. He loved to get together with friends for “jam” sessions, where he would sing and play guitar. After retirement you would find Fred tinkering around in his shop as he was the “go to” person for others if they needed work done on their golf carts, lawn mowers and other small engines. Fred was extremely patriotic and a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was also a devote Christian throughout his life. He served as an Elder for St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Eunice; son, Kenneth (Leann) of Oronoco, MN; daughter, Jean (John) Schulte of Burtrum, MN; sonin-law, Wayne Skinner of Oseola, WI; daughter-inlaw, Mary Lentz of Onamia, MN; brother, Duane (Pat) Lentz of Burtrum MN. Twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and a soon to be born great-grandson. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Frederick Sr. and mother, Lydia; son, Richard and daughter, Elaine Skinner; sisters, Lucille Dehn, Margaret Kreutzer and Marcella Leckwald; brothers-in-law, Glenn Shutter, Ray Dehn, and Aldean (Huntz) Kreutzer.

Alcuin (Al) was born March 8, 1932, in Melrose, Minnesota to Nicholas and Susan (Kulzer) Caspers. On February 13, 1960, he married Celine Theresa Imdieke at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Alcuin was a true outdoorsman and nature lover as he lived his best life outside. He and Celine enjoyed fishing, ice skating and dancing dates then continued on to become successful farmers and parents. They practiced their strong work ethic daily, but cherished Sunday afternoon family time. They retired from their dairy operation in 1998 and then visited the James family apple orchard consistently. After grieving Celine’s death in 2004, Alcuin became a big part of his grandchildren’s lives- always present at their many youth sporting events. He was always ready for adventure. He loved traveling with his children, waterskiing in his late 70s, ice skating at 80, kayaking, boating, and fishing at Black Oak Lake and biking many miles in retirement.

I’m also thinking your property manager is kind of a wuss, but I have the spiritual gift of cynicism. I’m old school, and if I own a house, I’d like to go in it any time I want—within reason, of course—if renters are in there. They have the legal right of quiet enjoyment, meaning I don’t get to show up at all hours and harass them. But I’m not letting them stiff-arm me and use COVID-19 as an excuse. I mean, tenants thinking they have the right to give the landlord and owner zero access? Maybe places like the Socialist Republic of California allow this kind of crap, but most states have common sense, plus reasonable tenant and landlord protections.

Check the current laws in South Carolina, especially any laws concerning a possible eviction moratorium and get in touch with a good real estate attorney. Dear Motor Medics, I have been having issues with my vehicle for several months with a warning light for both ABS and Trac on my dash. Both the red and the amber lights are on and when they come on the message “service stability” also appears in the message center. My vehicle is a 2011 Chevy Tahoe with only 60,000 miles. I took it to a shop that tells me the module has failed and that a replacement unit installed will be well over $2000.00 which I do not want to spend on a ten-year-old vehicle but want it fixed. Are there any alternatives for repair if the module has failed? -Bonnie in Sheldon, Iowa Dear Bonnie, This is a common problem with many vehicles due to normal wear and age. Flushing the brake system on a regular basis is a good preventive measure but once the system fails the only fix is often replacement or rebuilding. A certified used part is a good choice saving hundreds of dollars but due to the popularity often hard to find. The other money saving choice is rebuilding. Either used or rebuilt offer a significant cost savings over new and often carry a very similar if not better warranty. My mileage changes when I use 10% ethanol instead of no ethanol, MPG going up when I use it. Not much but I see one or two MPG. How can this be when ethanol should be burning faster with less BTU? I also want to know if there is an additive, I should be using in my fuel system with the ethanol to prevent corrosion of the system. I have been using ethanol for over twenty years with no issue but don’t want to have them in the future. - Greg in Cedartown, Georgia Dear Greg, Many people notice a change in mileage good or bad when they switch from ethanol to what most places call no ethanol blends. You would think that you would get better mileage
with no ethanol gasoline but it’s not always the case. Some cars get a little better mileage due to the increased octane of the fuel increasing performance. Too much of a fuel octane rating does nothing but if you use a lower than recommended octane in your vehicle the performance and mileage suffers, and you will see it every time you refuel. Cars have knock sensors to adjust for octane. As for additives in the tank when using ethanol, we have never seen any damage caused using ethanol in proper recommended amounts in your tank. Scott Nathe
Scott K. Nathe, age 50 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 15, 2021 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 21 at Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre with prayers by Fr. Greg Paffel. Military honors will be by the Little Sauk Legion Honor Guard. Following Scott's cemetery service, there will be a luncheon at the Little Sauk Legion. Visitation will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Scott Kenneth Nathe was born September 6, 1970 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Kenneth and Betty (Hamann) Nathe. In the summer of 1988, he enlisted in the Army Reserves and headed to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training. In 1989, Scott graduated from Sauk Centre High School. He continued his military training in the summer of 1989 at Fort Lee, Virginia. On July 26, 1997, he married Shanna Kolling and they were married for 17 years. He was currently working at Northern Lines Contracting of Hanover. Scott was a member of the American Legion Post 417 of Little Sauk. His favorite pastimes were riding motorcycle, hunting, ice fishing, spearing, and hog roasting. His warm smile and quick wit touched many people. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include children, Remington Nathe of Grey Eagle, Scout Nathe of Grey Eagle, and Regent Nathe of Sauk Centre; ex-wife, Shanna Nathe of Sauk Centre; mother, Betty Nathe of Osakis; sisters and brother, Melissa (Mike) Johnson of Osakis, Daniel (Kay) Nathe of Long Prairie, and Michelle Nathe of Sauk Centre; and significant other, Maggie Stepan of Sauk Centre. Scott was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Nathe; grandparents; aunt, Joyce Rutherford; and uncles, Richard Nathe and Paul Nathe. Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Johnson, Daniel Nathe, Brad Ritter, John Wiener, Dusty Ilgen, and Jeff Otte.

Crash: August 11, 2021: At approximately 2:51 p.m., the Stearns County Communications Center received the report of a single vehicle crash near the intersection of County Road 167 and Long Lake Road in Millwood Township. Upon arrival deputies learned that Jon Douglas Stone, 55, of Grey Eagle had been traveling northbound on County Road 167, when he fell asleep and missed a curve in the road. The vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, proceeded into the eastside ditch near Long Lake Road where it became airborne. The vehicle then hit several trees before coming to a stop. Stone was transported to the Melrose Hospital by Melrose Ambulance. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and was assisted by the Freeport Fire Department. Fatal ATV Crash: August 15, 2021: At approx. 12:22 a.m., received the call of an incident on the Wobegon Trail just east of Sauk Centre near 415th St. in Sauk Centre Township. The caller reported several people injured on the trail including one person who was not breathing. Stearns County deputies, along with officers from the Sauk Centre Police Department and Melrose Police Department responded to the scene. Upon arrival they found Kolten Kuhlmann, 23, Margaret Stepan, 35, and Scott Nathe, 50, all of Sauk Centre, severely injured and on the Wobegon trail. Nathe was found unconscious and not breathing. All three parties were treated on scene and the transported to area hospitals. Nathe to the Sauk Centre Hospital and Stepan and Kuhlman to the Melrose Hospital. Deputies were informed that Wilder Kuhlmann, a fourth victim, had been taken to the Sauk Centre Hospital by private vehicle. Nathe was later pronounced dead at the Sauk Centre Hospital. Wilder Kuhlmann was later airlifted from the Sauk Centre Hospital to the St. Cloud Hospital for further treatment. The initial investigation determined that Wilder Kuhlmann was operating a 2020 Polaris Sportsman 850 HD Class 1 ATV with Kolten Kuhlmann sitting on the front rack, westbound along the Wobegon Trail which is closed to motorized vehicles. Marcia J. Osberg
A celebration of Marcia Osberg’s life, age 79 of St. Cloud, MN, formerly of Upsala will be held Friday, August 27th in Upsala, MN. There will be a casual visitation from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home where friends and family can gather to share memories of Marcia and reconnect with one another. A memorial service will be held outdoors, across the street at Borgstrom Park at 2:00 p.m. Marcia passed away peacefully with family present on Sunday, August 15th at St. Benedict’s Care Facility in St. Cloud. Marcia was born May 8, 1942 in Swanville, MN to John & Irene (Oravetz) Rudie. She grew up on the family farm near Upsala with her older sister Teresa and four older brothers; Virgil, Gerald (Jerry), John Jr. (Jacky) and Stanley. Before passing, Marcia said the happiest time of her life was growing up on the farm. As a child, she enjoyed being around the animals and going for walks in the woods. She said she felt closest to God outdoors. Upon graduating from Upsala High School, Marcia moved to the Twin Cities with friends. She married Gary Osberg on August 21st 1965 and lived in Coon Rapids where the couple started a family. In 1978 Marcia, Gary and their two children Kerry and Erik moved back to Upsala where they enjoyed life on Cedar Lake. Marcia was a person of great faith. She was very involved in the “Together Encountering Christ” (TEC) retreats in Belle Prairie. She also played the guitar and directed a youth choir at St. Mary’s Church in Upsala known as the “Rainbow Children.” She loved to share her faith through music and was a dedicated leader in the church community. After moving to St. Cloud, Marcia became a part of the St. Benedict’s Community where she served faithfully for over 25 years. She began her tenure as the Activities Director at St. Benedict Village retirement living apartments. She later became a receptionist at St. Benedict’s Community Care Center where she was well loved by staff and visitors alike. Friends and family use words like; kind, gentle, sweet, funny and caring to describe Marcia. She is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and her nephew Michael Osberg. Marcia is survived by her ex-husband Gary Osberg, children Kerry and Erik (wife Jena) and grandchildren Kaylin, Christen, Anna, Leah and Willie. pan sending both parties down a steep embankment on each side of the trail. ATV Accident: August 16, 2021: At approx. 11:37 pm, their office received a report of an ATV accident with injuries on 1st Avenue West, in the city of Upsala, MN. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 58-yearold Daniel Burggraff of Upsala, MN was driving an ATV in the city of Upsala. Burggraff fell off the ATV and sustained injuries to his head. He was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital by Mayo Clinic Ambulance. This case is still under investigation. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Upsala First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance. Upsala, MN

Schools face difficult virus-related decisions to start new year
The opening of school is just around the corner and fall activities are getting underway. The timing is not good for an uptick of COVID-19 cases and, with that, talk of more regulations and mandates coming back, as well. Minnesota has done a pretty good job of getting its residents vaccinated, and our total is around 70 percent of those over the age of 16 having at least one dose. School districts are in a tough place, with recommendations coming at them from both the state and the federal CDC. All across the country, parents have made their feelings known to their local school boards. No doubt, we’d all like to see our kids back in school, in person, five days a week. That should be the top priority. Distance learning is challenging, especially for younger students who aren’t real familiar with laptops or white boards, or whatever they used when learning from home. It’s also more difficult for teachers, with some having to work with their students both in person and online. Some students have fallen behind. Whether it be from poor broadband access, a lack of supervision, or the fact that it’s just plain harder to learn when you can’t interact with your teachers. And then, there’s the social aspect of not seeing your friends daily and having many of the usual activities that are part of school life cancelled. Hopefully, those days are behind us, and we can stick with a more normal school schedule. Some parents have said they will pull their kids out of public school and make other arrangements if their children are forced to wear masks, or if there is some kind of vaccine mandate. That happened to some extent last year, and probably will again if schools are forced by state or federal officials to follow specific guidelines again. Several area schools have announced they will be opening this fall with masks not being required,

and I commend them for that. These are tough decisions, and consideration must be given to the fact that the students will receive a better education being in school, in person. That’s why the timing of the uptick in cases of the variant covid strain makes these decisions so difficult. They are made with the best information available at the time, but conditions can change quickly, and those decisions may need to be re-evaluated. Since our last visit in the paper, the drought of 2021 has worsened for many. There has been relief for others as systems moved through the area, leaving generous rainfall amounts and storm damage in their wake. On our farm, we have received about .4 of an inch in the past month, and it was plenty dry before that. Crops are being pushed along, and it looks as though harvest will be early this year. For those with livestock, the situation is getting critical. Hay production for the most part was short this year, and pastures are about done. It’s going to take many more acres of corn to produce the same amount of silage that will be needed. For many, the choices are either to buy more feed or sell more cattle. I’ve heard reports of pen space being short at sales barns because of the sheer number of cattle coming to market! Years of selective breeding and building up one’s herd can be gone if too many animals have to be sold. It’s hard, and it’s tough, but nobody said farming was easy. This year certainly bears that out. Sen. Torrey Westrom and I have a series of town hall meetings set for Friday of this week (Aug. 20).
