The rabbi said, “A lot of bad experiences.” Over the past few years I’ve written three columns on street smarts. After all my years in business, I’m afraid I just scratched the surface. Here are some more ideas: Idea #1 – A plan isn’t a plan until you have a backup plan. You may have made the best-laid plans, but what if something unexpected happens? I can’t emphasize enough how important backup plans are. You should always have a plan B and possibly plans C and D. The bigger the deal or event, the more detailed your backup plans should be. Next Idea – Use your network for referrals to save money. More than once, I’ve been able to negotiate better deals by offering referrals. The results can be even better than bartering. For example, I was 29 years old and couldn’t afford to build a new envelope manufacturing plant. But because I had a network, I was able to find a builder and guarantee I would get him other business. I got him four other buildings, and he gave me a down and dirty price. I did the same with my architect. Talk about a win-win situation – and an excellent way to put your network to work. Next Idea – Follow the fleet. Starting out in sales can be tough. When I began selling envelopes at age 21, I studied the
phone book for leads for a week. Then my dad suggested that I might try to ingratiate myself with one of the battle-scarred veterans of the envelope wars on the sales staff. I did exactly that, and we drove to our arch-competitor’s plant. We parked about 50 yards away from the shipping department and waited until one of its trucks began to pull out to make the day’s deliveries. The rest of the day we followed that truck. What leads we got! What a treasure-trove of information! What would you give to have your biggest competitor’s customer list? Next Idea – Don’t forget people from your past. My father taught me you must have a good memory. What he meant by that is no one becomes successful on their own. There are a lot of people who help you. You never want to forget those people. He gave me a lot of advice and counsel when I started my envelope manufacturing company. I stayed in touch with him. One day I picked up a newspaper and read that my friend had just become CEO of the largest retailer in the United States. Is it any wonder that they became one of my largest envelope accounts? Next Idea – There is a right way and a wrong way to lose a customer. Let’s face it, everyone loses customers. The trick is to position yourself to get that customer back some day in case their new supplier doesn’t perform. Immediately schedule a one-on-one meeting with that customer. Never do it by telephone or email or text. Do it in person. Tell them how much you have appreciated their business in the past and that you will move mountains so that it will be a seamless and smooth transition to their new supplier. Also, tell them that you will always be ready to help out in
any way whatsoever in the future. Next Idea – Nothing motivates people like crisp, crunchy, crackly, cold, hard cash. I have found there is no better way to reward people, including sales managers, entrepreneurs, project leaders and so on. For many decades I used to hand out cash at our company sales meetings as a reward for attracting new accounts. The place gets very hushed as I pull out all those crisp brand new $100 bills. You should see those people. They’re mesmerized. In short, the results are stupendous. Mackay’s Moral: Let street smarts help you navigate the bumps in the road. Bernice A. Gill, 80 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015 at Sterling Park Health Care Center in Waite Park, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, April 16, 2015 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was at St. John’s Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Bernice was born on January 18, 1935 in Albany, Minnesota to the late John & Theresa (Heinen) Ewertowsky. She was united in marriage to Elmer Gill on September 15, 1953

Brenda M. Karnes, age 64, of Burtrum, died unexpectedly on Friday, April 17, 2015, surrounded by her family at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 24 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Grey Eagle. Brenda Mae Karnes was born September 29, 1950 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Glen and Joyce (Clear) Karnes. On June 14, 1968, she married Duane Christian Sr. in Sisseton, SD. After 20 years of marriage they divorced and Brenda married Louis Thompson II in July of 1989. They later divorced in 2011. She spent the last two years with her special friend Dave Muellner. Brenda worked at Fingerhut in Sauk Centre and had helped around the farm. She spent most of her time doing daycare for her

in Albany, Minnesota. The couple resided in the St. Joseph area until 1971, when they moved to a farm south of Swanville. Bernice was a homemaker who enjoyed working in her large garden, cooking, baking, and sewing. She made numerous bridesmaid, prom, and flower girl dresses. Bernice’s three wonderful grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a long time member of the St. John’s the Baptist Christian Women, and also spent 20 years working as head cook for Church funeral luncheons. Bernice is survived by her son, Byron (Denise) Gill of Swanville, MN; daughter, Lynette Hartung of Albany, MN; grandchildren, Johnathan & Nicole Gill, and Samantha Hartung. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband; Elmer in 2010; parents; John and Theresa Ewertowsky, and brother; Jerome Ewertowsky.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Joyce Karnes and Gene and Ginny Karnes; and daughter, Brenda Lee Christian. Serving as casket bearers will be Brad Karnes Jr., Melburne Fairbanks, Shawn Karnes, Eric Fairbanks, Karl Christiansen, David Christiansen-Watson, and Joe Martin. Donald L. Koehn
Donald L. Koehn, 94 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. Funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Ken Bowman officiating and Rev. Craig Johnson co-officiating. Burial took place in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Donald Louis Koehn was born on July 5, 1920 in Langdon, North Dakota to the late William and Emma (Schlueter) Koehn. They moved to Albany, MN when Donald was 1 year old and in 1927, moved to Upsala, MN where he grew up and attended school. Donald served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater, during WWII, from August 1942 to December 1945.

Dorothy also loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Christian Mothers, Catholic Aid, and the Mission Quilting Group in Albany. Dorothy is survived by her son-in-law Ron Engelmeyer, St. Rosa; siblings Anna (Alois) Boeckers, Albany; Dolores (Bob) Weyer, Sauk Rapids; Mildred (Richard) Nienaber, Freeport; David (Margaret) Heinen, Waite Park; Arnold (Lorraine) Heinen, Albany; Gerald (Ione) Heinen, Albany; Vernon (Karen) Heinen, Albany; Rose Mary (Tom) Nienaber, Burtrum; sister-in-law Marie Heinen, Albany; three grandchildren David Engelmeyer, St. Rosa; Christopher Engelmeyer, St. Rosa; Peter Engelmeyer, Wayzata; and many other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Martin and Anna Heinen, her first husband David Schiffler in 1973, her second husband Lawrence Bloch in 2007, her daughter Mary Kay Engelmeyer in February of 2012, her brother Norbert Heinen, and her sister and brother-in-law Margaret and Louis Chock.
He initially served in the 394th Infantry Division and then transferred to the 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion under the 99th Infantry Division. Donald landed on Omaha Beach after D-Day, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and received four battle stars. He was united in marriage to Janet Dettler on June 22, 1952. They were initially blessed with a set of twins, Linda and Ronald, and later another son Joseph. Donald was always involved in farming; he also drove feed delivery truck for the Upsala Co-op Feed Store for 30 years, until retiring at the age of 79. He was a member of the Holdingford VFW, Upsala American Legion, and Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Upsala. Donald loved playing cards, dancing, reading, mowing lawn, bird watching and being surrounded by his grandchildren. Donald is survived by loving wife of 62 years, Janet; children, Linda (Randy) Pepin of Upsala, MN; Ronald (Cheri) Koehn of Cheyenne, WY; and Joseph (Cindy) Koehn of Otsego, MN; grandchildren, Tricia Pepin (Chris Jannings), Kristi Pepin, Scott (Jessica) Pepin, Donald (Crystal) Koehn, Brent Pepin, Bryant Pepin, Emma Koehn, and Amanda Koehn; great grandchildren, Nolan and Anna Pepin; brotherin-law and sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Dorothy A. Bloch, age 85, of Albany, was held on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Father Roger Klassen, OSB officiated and burial was at Seven Dolors Parish Cemetery in Albany. Dorothy passed away peacefully early Saturday morning. Arrangements were made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Albany. Dorothy was born on July 1, 1929 in St. Anthony to Martin and Anna (Eiynk) Heinen. She grew up attending the local school and was raised alongside 11 siblings. In 1952 she married David Shiffler in St. Anthony and together they had a daughter, Mary Kay. After he passed away, Dorothy remarried Lawrence Bloch on July 6, 1979 in Melrose. She was a farm wife who enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, and baking. For 18 years, she was her mother-in-law’s caretaker and she also worked in St. Cloud at Vision Ease. Dorothy liked

James W. “Jim” Koehn
James W. “Jim” Koehn, age 58, of Long Prairie, died peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital after a short battle with cancer and a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 22 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Interment will be at Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery in Dresden, North Dakota on Saturday, April 25 at 2 p.m. James William Koehn was born September 25, 1956 in Langdon, North Dakota to Theodore and Doris (Klein) Koehn. He attended Dresden Country School until the 4th grade and graduated from Langdon High School in 1975. He worked at National T. Grocery Store in Langdon for several years. In 1976 his family moved to Long Prairie. Jim worked various jobs before working at Electrolux in St. Cloud for 32 years. He quit working after being
diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2008. Jim was a man of faith. He read his bible often and could quote many bible verses. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. Jim enjoyed riding 4-wheelers, snowmobiles, and motorcycles. He could ride a wheelie on his motorcycle for miles. He was also the founder and creator of the “party cabin” in the woods. Survivors include his parents, Ted and Doris Koehn of Long Prairie; brothers, Jerome (Missy) Koehn and Jeff Koehn all of Long Prairie; sister, Nancy (Dan “Bubba”) Rahn of Grey Eagle; nephews and niece, Josh (fiancé, Tonie Scholz) and Tyler Koehn, and Nathan and Amber Rahn; aunts and uncles, Ervin Klein of Albany, Arlene Landowski of Albany, Janet Cigelske of Hewitt, Carole (Jerry) Rodenwald of Albany, Sharon Lehner of Albany, and Gladys Koehn of Salem, OR. Jim was preceded in death by his grandparents; and many aunts and uncles. Serving as casket bearers will be Josh Koehn, Tyler Koehn, Nathan Rahn, Amber Rahn, Jeff Koehn, and Jerome Koehn. Kenneth J. “Kenny” Hoeschen, age 47 of New Munich, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Kenneth John Hoeschen was born August 1, 1967 in Melrose, Minnesota to Robert and Donna (Winter) Hoeschen. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1986 and started building houses for multiple construction companies throughout the area. Kenny also worked at the Melrose Fertilizer plant and his last venture was driving truck for Sonny Peterson. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
Kenny liked telling jokes and was the type of guy who would give you the shirt off of his back. Survivors include his father, Robert “Bob” Hoeschen of Freeport; brothers and sisters, Roxane (Dean) Bienusa of Sauk Centre, Debra Hoeschen of Brainerd, Keith Hoeschen of New Munich, and Jason Hoeschen of Albany; and many loving relatives and friends. Kenny was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Hoeschen on June 6, 2012; and sister, Sandra Hoeschen on November 9, 2003. Serving as casket bearers will be Roger Gysberg, Mike Stahlboerger, Bob Zierden, Ron Dingmann, Tom Roelike, Mark Wolbeck, John Wolbeck, and David Wolbeck. Cross bearer will be Amy Dingmann and scripture bearer will be Derek Bienusa. Honorary bearers will be Sonny Peterson and the Ostrich Association. Carol Gerads, 76 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 20, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Father David Grundman officiating. Burial took place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Carol Ann Gerads was born on January 5, 1939 in St. Louis Park, MN to the late John and Clara (Walker) Grauman. She grew up in St. Louis Park where she attended school. Carol was united in marriage to Daniel Gerads Sr. on September 21, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN. She was a very dedicated mother, always very supportive and loving to her children and husband. Carol was an outstanding cook and baker, making many wedding cakes, breads, and will be forever remembered for
her wonderful fried chicken. She also had a passion for growing beautiful flowers and tending to her garden. Carol was a very active woman, always on the move and keeping busy with various activities. She was an active member of the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers, 4H Leader, Historical Society member, and taught religious education for 20 years. Carol’s family was always her priority, she always made holidays extra special and loved buying gifts for everyone in the family. She was greatly loved and her kind and tender spirit will be truly missed by many. The beautiful weather helped these 24 individuals complete their MN DNR ATV safety training course at the LPGE High School April 11th. The course is sponsored by the LPGE FFA and Neal’s Motor Sports. This course like many of the DNR Training courses, requires students to take the classroom instruction at home on a CD then upon completing the course and printing a certificate, are able to come in to the training facility to take the final quiz, review safety on ATVs then complete the driving portion to earn their ATV endorsement. St. Francis of Assisi Church to hold Benefit for Aubriella Eggert on May 3
There will be a benefit for Aubriella Eggert on Sunday, May 3rd, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at St. Francis of Assisi Church, located 10 miles north of Albany. The benefit will include a pancake and sausage breakfast along with a bake sale and silent auction. Free will offerings are very much appreciated. All proceeds will go to the Eggert family. Mike and Mary Eggert moved to St. Francis from the Cities in 2013. Mike works for Alderlink, while Mary is a stay at home mom. Their daughters are Alexis (9), Abigail (5), Alba (2), and Aubriella who is 5 ½ months old. Aubriella was born on November 4, 2014, weighing 7 pounds and 14 ½ ounces. Right away after birth, Mike noticed something was off with his daughter, Aubriella. The Eggerts noticed abnormal development with Aubriella. They looked to a medical specialist where they took a simple blood test. The test normally takes 2 weeks for the results to get back, but it only took 3 days. The blood test came back confirming for SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). One-in-40 people carry the SMA gene while 1 in 4 kids get SMA. Some cases are mild while some others are more severe. There are 5 types of SMA; Aubriella is diagnosed with type one. A kid with type one life expectancy is usually not past the age of two. However, the Eggert’s will not go down without a fight. Aubriella will have a testing in May to prolong her life. So far it is just a trial study, but they hope that she receives the drug instead of a placebo. Thought for Legislature Addresses Avian Influenza Issues the week: The House Agriculture Policy and Finance Committees held a joint informational hearing last week to hear from experts working to stop the spread of the H5N2 avian influenza that is attacking Minnesota’s poultry industry. At last count, 26 farms have been affected in 14 counties, with at least 12 additional cases reported in the past week. Kandiyohi and Stearns, the two leading turkey producing counties in Minnesota, have the most barns that have been hit. The lead testifier at last Thursday’s hearing was Dr. John Cilfford, the chief veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington. He reported that $15 million has been allocated to Minnesota to aid in the fight against the disease, and that Ag. Secretary Tom Vilsack is “on top of the situation” and has

requested additional funding for Minnesota. It’s hoped that warmer weather will aid in slowing down the spread of the disease. The virus cannot survive temperatures over 80 degrees, and upcoming summer weather will help curtail the disease. However, according to Dr. Bill Hartmann, head of the state’s Board of Animal Health, even if the disease is stopped now, more cases are likely this fall when temps cool off again and migratory birds begin their annual flights south. Dr. Carol Cordona, from the University of Minnesota, gave background information on the disease, which is thought to have originated in Southeast Asia. It migrated across the Bering Strait and came down through Alaska and hit the Pacific coast this past fall. Cases were first reported in British Columbia and then in our western states of Washington, Oregon, and California. When asked how the disease is spreading here in Minnesota and getting inside barns, Dr. Cardona said they really don’t know yet. “We are looking at most likely sources, looking at anything that comes in contact with the birds,” Cardona said. “We are looking at trucks and drivers, for example, and farms are changing the way supplies are being delivered. Trucks are stopping at the farm gate and unloading their product to another truck that stays on that farm.” John Zimmerman, a producer from Northfield, told committee members that

he appreciated Governor Dayton’s executive order lifting weight restrictions for trucks delivering feed and hauling turkeys to market. “It took 10 trucks to haul my turkeys yesterday instead of 12, and anything I can do to keep outside sources off my farm is a good thing.” He added that producers have always employed bio-security measures, but they have been ramped up now. On a related note, the House suspended its rules last Thursday to move along and quickly pass emergency legislation (H.F. 2225) that provides additional funding for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Board of Animal Health. The nearly $1 million will go to help cover the additional cost those agencies are facing as they test samples and work on the disease nearly around the clock, seven days a week. In addition, cooperative agreements have been submitted to the USDA to facilitate the additional funding expected to come from Washington. That process may take a couple of weeks to complete, and we want to insure that when the funding does arrive, it can be put to immediate use on the ground here in Minnesota. Rep. Lillian M. Decker
Lillian M. Decker, age 89 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church in Grey Eagle. Lillian Marie Mills was born August 28, 1925 in Crosby, Minnesota to Orville and Mina (Feieraband) Mills. She attended country school in Whipholt, Minnesota and graduated from Walker High School in 1942. Lillian married Paul Folwick in 1945. To this union three children were born, Paulette, Nancy, and David. Lillian and Paul later divorced. She then attended nurses training at AwGwah Ching in Walker to become a board certified LPN.
Lillian married Kermit Decker in 1963. To this union came Kermit’s four children, Eunice Ann, Carolyn, Leonard, and Richard. Kermit legally adopted Lillian’s three children and together they raised their family of seven children. Lillian and Kermit moved to Grey Eagle and farmed until Kermit retired to drive heavy equipment. After Kermit’s death in 1983, Lillian moved to Long Prairie to care for her mother-in-law, Saloma Decker. Lillian moved to Melrose in 1987. She was a member of Grey Eagle United Methodist Church and an active member of many organizations. Survivors include her children, Paulette Swanson of Melrose, Nancy (Dr. Jim) Mohs of Melrose, Eunice Ann (Al) Alton and Leonard Decker of Colorado, Carolyn (Dean) Young of Apple Valley, and Richard Decker of Holdingford; daughter-in-law, Mary Decker of Melrose; sister, Nodie Shepard of Longville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit; parents; son, David Decker; mother-in-law, Saloma Decker; brother, John Mills; sisters, Emma Albrant, Bernice Hines, Lucille Kevitte, and Orva Roe; sonin-law, Russell Swanson; and cousin, Marion Bloomquist. Raymond Stanley Skroch, 69 year old resident of Elmdale, MN, died Wednesday, April 15 at his home from cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 20 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Fr. John Odero officiating. The burial was held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. Raymond was born August 7, 1945 in Little Falls, MN to the late Sylvester and Lucille (Warzecha) Skroch. He attended grade school until the eighth grade in Bowlus, MN. Ray then went to Royalton High School where he graduated with the class of 1963. He joined the Army National Guard in 1962 and was called into active duty in November of 1963. In 1965, he started working at Camp Ripley as a Mechanic for the Federal Civil Service and retired in 1995. He was united in marriage to Sharon Paul on October 10, 1966 in Little Falls, MN. Throughout his life he worked various jobs including John and Joyce Gorka’s Catering, Keith Olson installing windows and doors and installing sewer systems with Denny and Sandy Larsen. Ray enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening, wood working, metal work and visiting with the family and friends. He was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN and the Bowlus American Legion Post #642. He is survived by his wife, Sharon

It sounds like you guys have made good progress, but now one of you is running out of steam. That’s okay. Getting out of debt and staying out of debt can be a tough road. For one thing, cars go down in value. The second thing is I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house even, but I tolerate it as long as you use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage with payments that are no more than a fourth of your take-home pay. I mean, it’s a much larger purchase. You can get a great car for $15,000 to $20,000 dollars. Depending on where you live, a good home can cost you 10 times that or more. Still, the best way to build wealth and have a high-quality financial life is to not be in debt. You’re never going to win with money in the long term if you can’t learn to delay pleasure. That’s the bottom line. Personal finance is about controlling the person you see when you look in the mirror. Every one of us has that little fouryear-old kid inside, a little kid whose name is Immaturity, and he or she wants what they want right now. Saturday, April 18, 2015: 11383 County 47, at 1254 hours Brian Gordon of Mound, MN, reported that a vehicle passed him in the “No Passing Zone” hitting and or striking the front of his 2005 Cadillac Escalade causing minor damage. The suspect vehicle then slid into the ditch area and came back up onto County Road 47 and continued southbound. Burtrum City April 6, 2015 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order on Monday, April 6th, 2015 at 7 p.m. by Mayor Strassburg. Kevin Wunderlich and Anna Payne did not answer roll call. Minutes of the March 2nd meeting were read and approved on a motion by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Beau Krueger. Upon vote motion carried. Finance report was read and approved on a motion by Beau Krueger and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet. Upon vote motion carried. Checks number 7367 thru 7377 were approved for payment on a motion by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Beau Krueger. Upon vote motion carried. Under old business, the houses that need to be cleaned up or taken down were discussed. Property owners will be contacted. Under new business, a motion was made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Beau Krueger to have dust control put on the streets again this year. Upon vote motion carried. Being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet. All voted in favor. Motion carried. These are unapproved minutes. Burnhamville Township March 31, 2015 These minutes are not approved. The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held March 31, 2015 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky, Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering. Newly reelected officers were sworn in before the meeting. Sup. Johnson made a motion to appoint Mike Berscheit as chairman for the year. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Sup. Johnson made a motion to appoint Louis Thompson as vice-chairman for the year. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motions passed. The minutes from the regular meeting of February 24, 2015 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. For correspondence the board received letter from Land Stewardship Project, weed control form from Todd County which the board completed, the county bridge report
showing deficiencies on Pillsbury bridge, township state association mailing list form, county association meeting April 9, and life insurance letter. The board heard updates from the county weed inspection meeting and spring training. April 10 at 2:30 p.m. was set as the spring township road inspection time. A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5085 through 5101: Rev. $2,343.11; R&B $6,164.27; Fire $ 2,396.00. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed. The hourly wage and monthly wages will remain the same as last year on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and a second by Sup. Thompson. Sup. Johnson made a motion to keep gopher bounty at $1 per tail. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Long Prairie Leader will be the township official publishing paper and the Burtrum Bell Bulletin Board will be the official posting site on a motion by Sup Berscheit and a second by Sup. Thompson. Motions passed. Sup. Johnson made a motion
to accept the dust control contract as presented by Herdering, Inc. for $0.74 per foot at 18 feet wide. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Sup. Thompson made a motion to accept the road blading contract as presented by Herdering, Inc. for $82.50 per hour with fuel surcharge. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the gravel contract from Herdering, Inc. for $6.50 per yard for Class #5 with fuel surcharge. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motions passed. In the road report the contractor will clean ditch on Morrison Line Road and watch frost boils. Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $104,215.15. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Wild Turkey Hunters in 5 Counties Asked to Help With Avian Influenza Surveillance
Successful wild turkey hunters in Kandiyohi, Pope, Meeker, Swift and Stearns counties can help determine if highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is present in Minnesota wildlife by allowing a sample to be collected from their turkeys. “HPAI has not yet been found in wild turkeys, but it has been found in domestic turkeys in these and other Minnesota counties,” said Michelle Carstensen, wildlife health program supervisor with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “We chose those five counties to enlist the help of hunters because they have sufficient wild turkey populations.” Starting Monday, April 20, the DNR is asking successful hunters in these counties to call to schedule an appointment at one of the participating wildlife offices and allow a sample to be collected from their turkey. Samples will include a swab of the trachea and, if the bird has not yet been field dressed, a swab of the cloaca as well. Successful turkey hunters in these counties must call the following offices beginning April 20 to schedule an appointment: Sauk Rapids, 320-223-7840; New London, 320-354-2154; Glenwood, 320634-0342; Carlos Avery, 651-296-5290. Sampling only takes a few minutes and the hunter will retain the bird. Hunters are asked to keep wild turkeys in their vehicles, and DNR staff will come out to take the samples at the vehicles. Hunters also will be asked to provide their contact information, harvest information and approximate harvest location.
Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Back Tax Scam Alert
Numerous residents have reported receiving calls from the IRS and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office demanding money for back taxes. The caller states that they are an IRS employee and working with a Stearns County Sheriff’s investigator to collect back taxes. The caller demands the payment or a deputy will be out to arrest the resident. In some cases the caller ID shows that the call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office. These calls are a scam and are not from the IRS or the Sheriff’s Office. If a resident receives this type of call they should hang up and not give any personal information to the caller. The 2015 spring wild turkey season is open until Thursday, May 28. The DNR hopes to collect 300 total samples from turkeys to test for HPAI. At this time, the DNR will not be sampling wild turkeys harvested in other counties. Unless their bird is found positive, individual hunters will not be notified of results. The DNR recommends turkey hunters practice good hygiene while field dressing their birds and cook the meat to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill any viruses and bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to people from HPAI infections in wild birds, backyard flocks and commercial poultry, to be low. No human infections with the virus have been detected. Morrison County Sheriff’s Office Distracted Driving Enforcement
Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reports that law enforcement agencies in Morrison County will be participating in the Distracted Driving Enforcement Mobilization next week. The Morrison County Commissioners have proclaimed April 30, 2015, distraction-free driving day in Morrison County. The sheriff’s office will have extra patrol staff on April 30th for distracted and inattentive driving enforcement purposes. Sheriff Larsen wants to remind motorists that distracted driving includes taking your eyes off the road, taking your hands off the wheel, and taking your mind off the primary task of driving. Texting and driving involves all 3 of the different types of distraction. The sheriff’s office main objective is the safety and security of our citizen’s and to reduce risk of injury and death caused by distracted or inattentive driving.
