Humility is power -By Harvey Mackay A selfabsorbed chief executive officer who, upon arriving at the hotel ballroom where his company’s annual meeting was to be held, was stopped at the door by a uniformed guard. The muscular sixfoot-five guard asked the CEO to wait while he checked the list. “But don’t you know who I am?” sputtered the CEO. “No, sir,” the guard replied, “but as soon as I find out I’ll let you know.” I have noticed that the world is becoming a little more about “me” and less about “we.” That’s why I was excited to read Ethan Willis’ new book, “Humble Power: Less Ego, More Impact, Better Results” (Humblepower.com). Frankly, I was more excited that Ethan wrote what I consider to be the definitive study on being humble. Even though he has “built and sold and runs companies of enormous value and success,” as Brendon Burchard writes in the foreword, “over decades, he’s remained one of the most true, aligned and humble people in my life.” Ethan opens up his book talking about Los Angeles Dodger superstar Shohei Ohtani, a $700 million batter-pitcher extraordinaire,
arguably the greatest two-way player in modern baseball history. You might ask, how could you call one of sports’ highest paid players humble? As Ethan explains, it all goes back to his high school coach in Japan. The coach had a knack for cultivating character in addition to their skill. Regarding pitchers, he said: “The mound is the most important place on the field. It’s a stage …. You receive the most attention…. They are at the pinnacle. For the rest of the day, I tell them, ‘You have to do the lowest job.’” That’s why Ohtani fills water cups for his teammates between innings and stacks them on the cooler. The adjective “humble” is mentioned in nearly every media interview with Ohtani. Throughout the book, Ethan offers a variety of stories about everyday people and corporate giants who exemplify humbleness. He also describes examples of how humility has decreased over the years. And he distinguishes between phony self-deprecating behavior and true humility. You’ll learn that “humble power is a mighty and expansive force multiplier of good things.” It is real, sincere and essential to great leadership. As Ethan writes, “When ego isn’t in the way, criticism becomes information. Adjustment becomes possible. And improvement continues.” Using the Ohtani example, “it’s not merely that he succeeds despite being humble, rather it’s that, to a substantial degree, he succeeds because of it. Ethan believes that humility grows out of
two core beliefs: 1. Our perspective is limited and shallow. 2. There is a power and purpose beyond our own. Those lead to developing humble attitudes of openness, curiosity and resilience, from which behaviors including listening, learning and serving follow. The power that those behaviors unlock opens the path to lead well and deliver sustainable results. And yet, Ethan maintains, even with these benefits, society is drifting away from humility. And that is going in the wrong direction. So he provides a road map on how to reverse the trend to improve your life, your relationships and your business. He sums it up like this: Less ego. More impact. Better results. Ethan divides his work into three sections: The Power of Personal Humility, The Power of Relational Humility and Leading with Humble Power.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Delivery Duties
occasionally one would climb toward the top of the pen and in a loud gruff voice express her unhappiness with me being there. As the birthing started, she usually calmed down and concerned herself with what she had to do. I recall one summer when we left the mothers in their wooded pasture due to the heat. They had created large dirt holes for bodily cooling. A day before several mothers began farrowing it rained, so the holes had water in them. They found comfort by laying in the water and having their babies there. I was kept busy running from one slop hole to another to keep those piglets from drowning or getting squashed in the mud. Lucky enough, over half of the piggies lived. In those days when a pig grew to 30 pounds they were worth between 11 and 13 dollars. Those litters averaged 7 pigs saved. The mosquitos, deer flies, heat and mud were actually worthwhile, but it took a couple of days away from the discomforts to realize it. Sometimes farming sucks! The beef animals were a different matter. They sometimes had problems caused by calves not coming out front feet and nose first, or the calf being too large for the mother to deliver herself. Sometimes a wire stretcher was needed to remove the calf. There were other times when the mother would go to the most distant brushy end of the cow pasture to deliver. First you found her missing, where did she go? Did she get through the fence and go to the neighbors? Better check that brushy area about half a mile from the farm. Occasionally the cow would be somewhat aggressively protective of the calf. After she was convinced that you were not there to harm her baby, she allowed you to put it on your shoulders to carry it back to the farm. The cow usually followed very closely, constantly sniffing the calf to be sure it was ok. Sometimes the calf weighed over 75 pounds and the trip back to the farm helped to get you ready for the upcoming football season. Life is great when everything has a positive result. Maybe being a specialist in animal delivery is or was one of the duties of your job. In my younger years, the birth of a pig or a beef animal required careful attention and assistance to spot complications. The birth usually went smoothly, but there were occasional concerns. There were many times when “sow sitting” was my job. If the birth occurred in a specially built farrowing pen, the job required keeping the babies in a safe place while the mother flopped her body around, potentially squashing one of her newborn. This required being in the pen with the mother. A few of the sows didn’t want my assistance, so

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I have started a new series on Sunday morning services. I will be preaching from 1 Thessalonians, which I am excited about. The Bible tells us that we will have trouble in this world. Jesus warns of this in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus says, “But take heart, I have overcome the world.” We all have troubles and will continue to have troubles, we live in a broken world, but we need to trust in Jesus, He gives us hope. The theme of 1 Thessalonians is to be faithful! 1 Thessalonians 1:7 “And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.” The Thessalonians were faithful even in persecution. Many have asked me what needs to happen before the Lord returns, it just seems like our world is falling apart? Well, let me share with you what Jesus calls the “birth pains” of His second coming found in Matthew 24. There are nine months of pregnancy but toward the end there are signs that the baby will be born soon. It’s the same with the second coming of Jesus, there are signs that the time is getting close. I am not going to quote the text, just tell you what they are, all found in Matthew 24; “Wars and rumors of wars, nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, famines and earthquakes in various places…All these are the beginning of birth pains.” Then Matthew 24 goes on to say what will happen to all Christians… “then you will be persecuted and put to death, hated by all nations, because of Jesus, there will be more and more wickedness and the love of many will grow cold.” Here is a word of encouragement; since
it seems as though our time is getting closer. Look at James 1:2-3 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Here is my encouragement, stay in God’s Word, and pray for the believers all over the world. Carol A. Schneider
Carol A. Schneider, age 70 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home. Carol Ann Uphoff was born May 23, 1956, in Melrose, Minnesota to Raymond and Lorraine (Ahrens) Uphoff. After high school, Carol began working at Fingerhut in Sauk Centre. On September 17, 1977, she was united in marriage to Richard “Rick” Schneider at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. They farmed west of Greenwald for 35 years and while helping on the farm, Carol worked at Jerry’s Grocery Store in Greenwald and as a waitress at Greenwald Pub. After they moved to Sauk Centre in 2013, she started cleaning houses. Carol was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, Carbles, setting puzzles, going on fishing trips with her family, and watching her grandkids’ sporting events. Survivors include her husband, Rick Schneider of Sauk Centre; son, Brian (Nicole) Schneider of Albany; grandchildren, Nathan and Brooke Schneider; brothers and sisters, Dave (Carol) Uphoff of Sauk Centre, Roger (Sharon) Uphoff of Albany, Linda (Ken) Schneider of Sauk Centre, Bev (Alan) Lieser of Belgrade, and Victor (Ann) Uphoff of Melrose. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Lorraine Uphoff. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Janet Kathryn (Michels) Schmidt went to heaven surrounded by her loving husband and family on September 6, 2026 at the age of 86. Janet was born on July 10, 1940 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Albert and Matilda (Walters) Michels. She was raised on a farm near Eagle Bend and graduated as the salutatorian of her class from Eagle Bend High School in 1958. Janet married Don Schmidt on June 2, 1962 at Saint Nicholas Parish in Bell River. This union was blessed with four daughters; Anita, Barb, Coleen, and Deb. They lived briefly in Sauk Centre and Saint Paul before settling in Long Prairie. Janet and Don had a very loving and strong bond. They enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States. They were always up for an adventure and shared a love of dancing. Music was an essential part of their lives. Their voices blended as perfectly in song as their lives did in marriage. A personal favorite was singing “You Are My Sunshine” together. Janet had a love for children, and driving a school bus for over 20 years was one of her greatest passions. She later worked at Knute Nelson Nursing Home in Alexandria as a Certified Nursing Assistant where she lovingly cared for the residents. She was blessed with remarkable artistic and musical talents. Gifted with a natural ear for music, she was a selftaught musician who could play any stringed or keyboard instrument. She also shared her beautiful voice as a member of the church choir. She was known for her creativity that was expressed in a variety of crafts including crocheting, ceramics, sewing, and needle work. Over the years, she crafted hundreds of blankets which she lovingly gave to others. She enjoyed reading and tending to her abundant flowers which brought her such joy. Azaleas were of significance to her; as her favorite flower, and they became a cherished symbol of love every time Don gave them to her. Janet held many roles in her lifetime; a child of God, a daughter, a wife, an aunt, a sister, a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. Her gentle nature and caring spirit will be her legacy. She is remembered with love by a wide circle of family and friends. Janet’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband of 64 years, Don Schmidt; daughters Anita Schmidt, Barb (Dave) Morisch, Coleen Schmidt, and Deb Schmidt; grandchildren Jessica (Adam) Hansen, Steph (Michael) Latzke, Josh (Katie) Morisch, Joe (Sannie) Morisch, Nathan Messer, and Katie (Dexter) Robyn; greatgrandchildren Evan and Mason Hansen, Abby and Emily Morisch, Caleb Morisch, Lexi Messer, and Chase and Chandler Robyn; siblings Art Michels, Maynerd Michels, Margaret (Delmar) Hommerding, LaVonne (Harlan) Hommerding, and LaVerne (Sue) Michels; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Janet was welcomed to heaven by her parents and greatgrandsons, Jackson and Levi Morisch. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Arrangements for Janet are with the Iten Funeral Home of Browerville.

Margaret “ M a g g i e ” Lindhorst, age 90, of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, at Cura Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, September 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Osmond, Nebraska. Margaret Sophia Krienert was born on August 1, 1936, in Nebraska, the youngest of six daughters born to Henry and Mary Krienert. She attended school in Nebraska through the eighth grade before helping on the family farm alongside her sisters. Maggie married Tony Lindhorst in 1960, and together they lovingly raised their family in Nebraska until 1975. The family then relocated to Minnesota, where Maggie continued to devote herself to raising her children and serving her community. A woman of strong faith, Maggie was active in her church community. She worked for Comfort Keepers, providing companionship and care to elderly individuals in their homes. She also supported Tony’s business, Northern States Feeder Pig, helping at the calf auction and often bringing her famous fried chicken to share with those in attendance. Later, Maggie and Tony owned and operated the Tic Toc Bar until their retirement in 2000. Maggie was an exceptional cook who was always eager to try new recipes and share them with the family. She loved spending her time with the grandchildren. She enjoyed cheering on the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and was an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers football fan. Her kindness, generosity, and love for family will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Maggie is survived by her sister, Hilde; children, Dan (Brenda) Lindhorst of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Kris Vold of Wahpeton, North Dakota, and Mark (Shelly) Lindhorst of Gilbert, Minnesota; six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tony; daughters, Mary, Joan, and Toni; sisters, Beata, Francis, Mary, and Adela; and son-in-law, Brad Vold. John R. Winters, age 75 of West Union, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at his home in West Union, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, September 9, at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union with Rev. Kevin Soenneker officiating with Rev. David Grundman and Rev. Mark Botzet concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. John Robert Winters was born August 30, 1951 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to Verne and Esther (Bromenshenkel) Winters. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1969. He was united in marriage to Catherine “Cathy” Grundman on July 22, 1978 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis, Minnesota. John ran West Union Service for over 50 years. Working with his brother, Gary, the shop became so much more than a mechanic shop. It was a place for people to gather, visit, and solve all the world’s problems. With his wife, Cathy, they built a home outside of West Union. Together, they raised six kids. He served as the best role model and helped his kids until the day he died. In his free time, he enjoyed farming with his brother, Ron and his brother-in-law Danny Meyer, hauling golf carts for his son Matt, and giving his grandkids golf cart rides. He also enjoyed giving a hard time to absolutely anyone he came across. John enjoyed helping anyone, especially his kids and St. Alexius Catholic Church. He loved helping at the Sausage Supper, socializing with people from under his shade tree at the West Union Fourth of July parade, and making sauerkraut with his family. John was an avid State Fair attendee, and yes, he went this year. He was a man who worked hard, lived with integrity, and truly made the world a better place. He will be missed by all who knew him. I mean, it’s your money now. But considering what you’ve told me about your daughter, I’d recommend attaching a few strings to her getting anything. Set up guidelines designed to improve her behavior in some areas. Then, you could give her the money if she meets the requirements. Don’t make her jump through a bunch of hoops for no reason, though. I’m talking about things that will show her how to live a more productive and responsible life—financially and as a mature adult, in general. I think this is fair to you both. It’s also a way to create good teachable moments between a father and daughter. Dear Motor Medics, I just bought a 2010 Ford Explorer and it’s the first 4x4 I’ve owned that has electric shift on the dash instead of the floor. I’m more of a manual shift kind of guy but now that I’m a bit older, I’ve traded the full size F350 for something a bit smaller. It was the wife... She made me do it. My question is how well do the electric shift units work? It just seems like it would be weaker in my opinion, and I have yet to be able to get it to shift into 4x4 low range. It didn’t come with a manual but how hard can it be? Just push the 4x4 button, or am I missing something? The electric 4x4 has been around for many years and it’s just the shifting mechanism that’s electric. Kind of like remote control if you want to think of it that way. Just select what you want like on the TV and that’s what you get. To engage the low function, it is a bit more involved. While this one can go into 4x4 high while on the highway the low needs to be parked, in neutral and foot on the brake. almost daily and it has been annoying going to the store everyday to put air in them. I’ve tried going to the tire store 4 times where they looked for leaks and found none. On the fourth trip they suggested taking off the tires, cleaning the bead and sealing them with glue for tires which should fix any leaks I could have. They also replaced all 4 valve stems. Stephen Joseph Gretsch Evelyn Mary Stangler Our
family is heartbroken to announce the unexpected passing of Stephen “Giant” Gretsch, age 64, of Albany, Minnesota, on September 4. Stephen was born April 12, 1962, to Russell and Barbara (Blattner) Gretsch. He married Patricia “Patty” Olmscheid on May 26, 1984, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, Minnesota, and together made their home in Albany with their three children: Joseph, Danielle, and Tiffany. Steve grew up in Albany and graduated from Albany High School, where he was a threesport athlete, playing football, basketball, and golf. Many of his high school classmates became lifelong friends, relationships he cherished throughout his life. He went on to earn his associate degree from St. Cloud Business College. Steve began his career at KASM Radio, working alongside his mom before becoming a stay-at-home dad and embracing that role wholeheartedly. Steve was a proud and involved father who coached his daughters’ basketball teams and was always there to support all three of them in golf, cheering them on every step of the way. In 2005, he and Patty purchased KLFD Radio in Litchfield, where he followed his true passion — becoming the voice of local sports, hosting the morning show, and delivering countless commercials that made him a familiar and beloved voice throughout the community. Through his work and his love of the community, he formed many wonderful friendships over the years and cherished the many people who became an important part of his life. Giant was an avid golfer who lived on the Albany Golf Course and spent countless hours playing the game he loved. In his younger years, he played competitively and even won the Buick Scramble National Championship in Florida. He was a dedicated member of the Albany Golf Club, serving on its board for nearly 30 years, and was a member of the Albany Jaycees and Litchfield Lions. Steve loved hunting and fishing. Over the years, he enjoyed having a variety of boats, fish houses, and other toys that gave him even more ways to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. He never missed deer opener or fishing opener, traditions he looked forward to sharing with his close friends up north every year. Giant was known as a true grill master who loved smoking and grilling for family and friends. Steve had a special place in his heart for his dogs over the years. Crickett, Woody, and Buster were an important part of his life, and more recently, his two beloved Aussiedoodles, Brodie and Berkeley, brought him endless companionship and joy. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Patty; his children, Joseph (Autumn Nielsen), Danielle, and Tiffany (Stephanie Modrynski); his two precious grandchildren, Brinley and Grace; his father, Russ; and his siblings, Jane (Daniel Schneider) Mayers and Joel (Melanie Shattner) Gretsch; and his nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barb, who passed away in 2024. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, at Seven Dolors Church in Albany, Minnesota. A private interment at the parish cemetery will take place at a later date. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, at the church prior to the Mass. Following the Mass, a celebration of life reception will be held at Shady’s Sunset Bay in St. Anna, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will follow the service at Seven Dolors Cemetery. Evelyn Mary (Beyer) Stangler of Albany, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home in Albany, Minnesota, on August 27, 2026, at the age of 84. Evelyn was born on October 19, 1941, to Alphonse and Mary (Miranowski) Beyer in Brandrup Township, Minnesota. She married Anthony Stangler on August 3, 1968, and they had two sons. Evie grew up on a farm and was part of a large family with a strong faith. As a young girl, she enjoyed ball games and fishing with her family and tagging along with one particularly mischievous brother. She worked outside the home for a brief time, but her main focus became helping her husband Tony on the farm (she even mastered plowing!) and selflessly raising her two sons. She was an A+ homemaker who took pride in taking care of the family home. She enjoyed biking, camping, and traveling with Tony during retirement. Evie was a happy and easy-going person, and she kept her cheerful demeanor until the very end. She loved cardinals, and these beautiful birds will forever remind us that she is watching over us now. Evelyn is survived by children Jim (Sloane) Stangler and Jeff (Monica) Stangler; granddaughter Nevaeh Stangler; brothers David (Janet) Beyer; Gene (Phyllis) Beyer; Dennis (Beth) Beyer; Kenneth (Barb) Beyer; sisters Therese Watkins; Florence (Al) Lucken; Dorothy Mittendorf; Gladys (Allan) Amundsen; Mary (Neil) VanWechel; many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Alphonse and Mary Beyer; husband of 58 years, Anthony Stangler; sisters Joan Beyer and Sister Loretta, OSF; brothers-in-law Gerald Watkins and Gary Mittendorf; and grandson, Trenton Stangler.

Fatal Crash: September 4, 2026: At approximately 11:52 a.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a motorcycle crash near the intersection of County Road 50 and Glenwood Road in Wakefield Township. The crash occurred approximately one and a half miles north of the City of Cold Spring. The Cold Spring Police Department was the first agency to arrive at the scene. Responding officers located a 2008 Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle in the southbound ditch, along with a male who was also in the ditch. The male was not wearing a helmet. Life-saving measures were initiated at the scene; however, the male was pronounced deceased. The deceased was subsequently identified as Stephen Joseph Gretsch, 64, of Albany. According to information gathered at the scene, Gretsch was traveling southbound on County Road 50 with two other motorcyclists. As the group entered the curve near Glenwood Road, Gretsch’s motorcycle continued straight and left the roadway, entering the southbound ditch. The motorcycle sustained extensive damage consistent with having rolled during the crash. A fiber-optic cable box and a utility pole were also struck and damaged. The crash remains under investigation by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office and alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor. Assisting agencies included the Cold Spring Police Department, Cold Spring Fire and Rescue, and Mayo Ambulance Service.
