Teachers make a difference -By Harvey Mackay Years ago a John Hopkin's professor gave a group of graduate students this assignment: Go to the poorest sections of the city. Take 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and investigate their background and environment. Then predict their future outcomes. After consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and compiling much data, the students concluded that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in jail. Twenty-five years later another group of graduate students was given the job of testing the prediction. They went back to the same areas. Some of the boys – by then men – were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the original 200. They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to jail. Why was it that these men with many disadvantages had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were continually told: “Well, there was this teacher.” They pressed further and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, long since retired. How had she exerted this remarkable influence over that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her? “No,” she said, “I really couldn't.” And then, thinking back over the years, she said musingly, more to herself than to her questioners, “I loved those boys.” Teachers hold a special place in our lives.
As we start another school year, it’s a perfect time to salute and applaud the people who helped mold us into who we became. October 5 is World Teachers’ Day, so let’s celebrate the important role teachers play in all our lives. I learned many life lessons from my teachers that had a significant bearing on my life. There is no magic formula for being a success. Sure, natural talent can make a big difference. It takes iron determination and lots of hard, hard work. The harder you work, the luckier you get. Success only comes before work in the dictionary. My mentor Curt Carlson, founder of one of the world’s largest privately owned companies, used to say, “You work five days a week to keep pace with the competition. You work Saturday to get ahead.” Stay focused. The person who is everywhere is nowhere. If you have the ability to focus fully on the task at hand, and shut out everything else, you can accomplish amazing things. Respect has to be given to be received. Respect people for what they are and for what they stand for – even if you don’t agree. Be respectful or be regretful. Dream big. I was taught to aim high and to have dreams that inspire me to go beyond my limits. Show me someone who doesn’t dream about the future and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t know where he or she is going. If you can dream it, you can become it. Never be afraid to make mistakes. You’re bound to fail at some things. Learn what you can and move on instead of beating yourself up. Embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not taking any risks. And that could mean you’re not making progress. Remain trustworthy. Trust is the most important word in business, as well as life in general. Trust is central to doing business with anyone. Without it, you have another word that
begins with T: Trouble. It takes years to build trust, but only seconds to destroy it. There are consequences for bad decisions. Bad decisions are quite different from mistakes, as any teacher can tell you. Deciding to take shortcuts instead of doing the job right, making promises you can’t keep – there are consequences that are often difficult to overcome which could be avoided by starting off on the right path. Make the best of your opportunities. Look for occasions to display your talents and see where it leads you. There’s an old saying that you make your own opportunities. Don’t sell yourself short. You can make a difference. Sometimes all a person needs to hear is that they matter. Great teachers inspire that confidence, no matter what the grade or age level. They also set wonderful examples of making a difference in their students’ lives, like the teacher who showed all those boys that they had tremendous potential for success. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Summer Kitchens
One of my friends stopped at my office recently to tell me about an idea he had for a story. He began the conversation by saying that I should write about a summer kitchen. I had never heard about a summer kitchen, so I thought maybe some of my readers were in the same situation. Sometimes when a house was built during the time when wood and coal were the only sources of heat for cooking and heating, the builder would add a summer kitchen to the plans. This was an addition to the home structure. The addition was a fully enclosed area that was used to cook food. I'm sure that some of us can remember being in the house kitchen during the hot summer days. The outside temperature was hot and if the wood kitchen stove was being used for cooking or baking, it made you feel like you were in an oven. The housewife was very uncomfortable and those entering the kitchen to eat meals
were also not comfortable. A solution to the hot kitchen was the summer kitchen. The summer kitchen was used to do the cooking and baking, thereby keeping the extra heat out of the house. Dining and gathering could than occur either in the house or in the yard, whichever was the most convenient. There was another advantage to the extra kitchen and that was having an additional oven to be used when the whole family was coming for a meal. This gave the cook extra oven space to cook the roast, bake the bread, the desserts and all of the additional dishes at a different temperature if needed. The outside stove usually used the same chimney as the inside stove. It also provided a space outside of the house for the men to do the things that men do, like smoke, pass a bottle and tell stories, all of which are done much easier without female supervision. I understand that there were some summer kitchens in central Minnesota, but they were more popular where the temperature was generally warmer. The added cost of the summer kitchen was not considered an acceptable expense when building a house in this area. When one remembers that an outside kitchen would require buying another cook stove, windows, lumber and a roof, it would seem best to have someone else do the summer kitchen and see how it worked.
From the Desk of Pastor Bruce I have many books on my shelves in my office. Way more than I need actually. I actually have a Websters Dictionary, which I never use. If I want to see what a word means, I look it up online. Other books, Church history, Systematic Theology (now that is an interesting read), New and Old Testament History, books by my favorite authors and the list is endless. There is one book that is on my desk, that I use regularly. It is the Bible, God’s Holy Word. It is on my desk within reach. I use it in my study, and in counseling, and in my personal devotional time. God’s Word is also “On Line” and I use it too if I am looking for a specific verse but cannot remember the reference. But to read, the pages of Scripture, I take the actual book in my hands and open it up. Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Alive and Active, unless it sets on the shelf. I am not sure how to convince anyone to open up the pages of wealth, but it is far from boring as I have heard some say. God is writing to His people, in fact most of the New Testament is written to the church. So maybe that is the key: If you do not have a
relationship with the living God, then you will not understand His Word. Here are Words to live by John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Won't you consider inviting Him into your heart, putting all your anxieties aside, and resting in His promises. Carol Harren
The mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Carol Harren, age 81 of Sartell, was held Wednesday, September 29 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell, burial was in the parish cemetery. Carol died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home. Carol was born December 31, 1939 in St. Francis, outside of Albany to Bernard and Florenetine (Stueve) Hoppe. She married Conrad Harren on September 2, 1958. The couple lived in Andover and Carol worked for Federal Cartridge in Anoka. Then they moved to Grey Eagle and finally to Sartell. Carol was a member of the St Francis Xavier Church in Sartell and the St. Francis Xavier Christian mothers. Carol is survived by her husband, Conrad Harren, Sartell; her children; Sharon (Steve) Therault, Crystal; Debra Dumaoal, Euless, TX; Glen (Lisa) Harren, Princeton; Beverly (Damon Bosell) Harren, Cambridge; brother and sisters, Mary Kay (Victor) Gerads, Coon Rapids; Judy (David) Douvier, St. Stephen; Dennis (Marie) Hoppe, Sartell. Three grandchildren, Dustin Therault (Brittany); Samantha (Jake) Pogones; Shelby Bosell two great-grandchildren, Jasper and Jade. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Ambrose Hoppe.

Eloise (Elly) Johnson Cundiff entered her heavenly home on Monday, August 30. She was born to Erling and Palma Johnson on September 21, 1951. She grew up on the dairy farm and attended school in Upsala until her junior year where she attended and graduated from Oak Grove High School, Fargo, ND. She then continued her schooling at AFLBS (Now FLBC) in Minneapolis, MN where she was blessed to tour with the concert choir to Norway and met some of her relatives. She then moved to Spokane, WA and worked in a nursing home and moved to Poulsbo, WA where she met Richard Cundiff and they were married on August 16, 1975. They continued to reside in Silverdale, WA until her passing. She is survived by husband, Richard, brothers Sheldon Johnson, Phil and Mona Johnson and Leif and Suzi Johnson and sisters Judy and Larry Voll and Rachel Johnson. She is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews, uncle David Jergenson, aunts Grace Mills and JoAnn Jergenson. She was proceeded in death by her parents, Erling and Palma Johnson and brother, Jim Johnson and many aunts and uncles. Celebration of life will take place on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Word of Life Free Lutheran Church, 3328 1st Ave West, Upsala, MN with lunch to follow.

Henry Joseph Wilhelm, 80, a resident of New Hope, MN for nearly 50 years, passed away on September 17, 2021 after a hardfought bout with cancer. He proceeded to the afterlife from Our Lady of Peace Home in St. Paul, MN. “Hank” was born on September 21, 1940 in St. Martin, MN to Henry and Eleanor Wilhelm. The second born of five siblings (Mary Lou, John, Patrick, and Scheery), he divided his childhood between St. Paul and Birch Lake. He grew up to appreciate wildlife and wilderness, as well as the benefits of hard work and determination. Following his graduation from Mounds View High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force serving a tour in England as a Logistics Specialist. He returned to St. Paul and forged a long career in Lithography, mastering the process of color-matching original content and recreating onto prints, magazines and books. He continued this profession through printing process advancements and computerization until retirement. Hank fell in love and married Lauretta “Laurie” Antoinette Wilhelm on May 26, 1967. They lived in St. Paul for several years and eventually moved to New Hope, MN, raising two sons, Henry Scott and Robin Vance. They instilled outstanding values in their sons: resolve, honesty, integrity; and provided them with the opportunity to succeed. Hank and Laurie purchased a cabin on Bass Lake near Burtrum, MN in 1971, where Hank tried to maximize his time, especially after he retired, and where Hank and Laurie formed many friendships with people in the area. Hank was victorious in his battle against alcoholism! Recognizing the plight that this disease caused his loved ones, he quit drinking, joined Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and remained sober for over 20 years until his passing. During his sobriety, he evolved into a mentor, friend and brother to the members of AA. He was a faithful Catholic as a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in New Hope, MN and St. John’s Church in Swanville, MN, and was a loyal, lifelong Union man. Hank was a master “tinkerer” and innovator, continuously attempting to improve methods to get a job done. His sons would argue that he always would choose the most complicated process to complete a project but he was undeterred by rationalism. Hank will always be remembered for his welcoming, outgoing and humorous nature. He would always brighten people’s lives with a smile and a joke. He can be reminisced as the life of the party, causing outbursts of laughter and joy. Hank will be joining his wife, Laurie, and all his siblings in the afterlife. He is survived by his sons Scott (Denise) and Rob (Shay), and his grandchildren, Brendan, Ellie and Jessica. Hank’s celebration of life was held on September 24, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hope.

Dorothy C. Schmidt, age 88 of Freeport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. The Christian Women will pray a rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Dorothy Caroline George was born February 1, 1933 in Burleene Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Theodore and Aurelia (Ricker) George. She was united in marriage to Aloys Schmidt on June 3, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. After their marriage, Dorothy helped Aloys on the farm and worked for social service as a housekeeper in the area. She was also employed at Stearns County Bank in Albany as a custodian and later worked at Catholic Charities as a care and training aid. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Mothers. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, telling jokes, gardening, and was a great cook. Dorothy took great pride in her lawn and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include her children, Donald (Bernice) Schmidt of Freeport, Harold (Deb) Schmidt of Grey Eagle, Ron (Becky) Schmidt of Burtrum, Cheryl (Jim) Harren of Freeport, and Dennis Schmidt of Brainerd;15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren with one on the way; and sister, Alvina Breth of Albany. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Aloys Schmidt; parents; daughter, Joyce Schmidt on January 18, 2021; an infant son; brothers, Stanley George, Jerome George, and Raymond George. Leona A. Karels, age 91 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, September 27, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Leona Anne Monnens was born during the dust bowl days on July 26, 1930 in Isabel, South Dakota to Frank and Gertrude (Stapert) Monnens. She spent most of her childhood down by the river in Lac qui Parle County and attended country school. Leona graduated valedictorian of her class in 1949 at Bellingham High School. She was united in marriage to Theodore C. Unzen and later divorced. From this union, three children were born. Leona worked for Production Credit for 17 years, retiring in 1983. On June 4, 1983 she married Stan Karels in Plymouth, Minnesota. They moved to New Hope and Leona continued working in the metro area. On June 25, 1996, the couple moved to Melrose. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Women, American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary and the SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. Leona enjoyed using her seamstress talents for hire as well as for family, friends, and for various veteran organizations. Survivors include her children, Frances Allen of Keene, New Hampshire, Ronald (Carol) Unzen of Madison, and Rebecca (John) Ferkinhoff of St. Cloud; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Karels; parents; brothers and sisters, Edward (Patsy) Monnens, Mary Monnens, Dorothy (Orrin) Oddan, Arthur (Hilda) Monnens, Francis Monnens, Stella (Maurice) Bombeck, Lauretta (Emmanuel) Karels, Robert (Dorothy) Monnens, Earl (Evelyn) Monnens, and Raymond Monnens; and an infant sister. Thursday, September 23rd the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle FFA hosted the Soils and General Livestock Competition. These were the first in person Competitions for FFA since February 2020. Both teams did extremely well and earned themselves a state trip. The Soils Team took 2nd place overall, with Brasion Abers taking first place individually, Colton Park taking 5th place individually, Mechaet Elby Mechebang taking 8th place individually, and Izzy Otremba finishing out the team with a strong score. But listen, you can prepare for inflation and address the results without being panicked. You are still in control of your money, inflation or not. You’ll be able to make sure your money is going toward the right things, while being able to find places where you can cut spending, if you’re living on a written, monthly budget. If you’re noticing the prices of things like food and gas rising in your area, you’ll need to adjust your budget to account for this. That way, you’ll know exactly what you’re working with, and it will help you avoid any nasty surprises. If you’re really feeling the pinch and want to save even more, look for specific ways to lower your grocery bill or save money on gas.
Maybe it’s time you switched to generic brands, or started a carpool into work. If you find great deals on canned food and things you can stock your pantry with—I’m talking about stuff you’ll actually use—go ahead and buy a little extra. Just make sure you’ve budgeted for it before heading to the grocery store. You’ll want to already know exactly what you’re going to spend, so you don’t get swept up into impulse buying. Like it or not, inflation is a thing. If you plan on retiring one day, it’s pretty much guaranteed that the cost of a loaf of bread, a tank of gas and even a cup of coffee will have gone up by then. The best way to protect yourself against inflation that’s bound to happen is to invest your money— and the sooner the better. Dear Motor Medics, I want to get my wife a remote start for her 2010 Acura MDX but I need to do some research first. I have been told that adding anything to my car which has only 20k miles on it will void the warranty. I have never had a remote start, but it seems like almost everyone I know has one. It can’t be that all of them have no warranty. Is there anything I should look out for when getting one as far as the kind of unit that will or won’t work with my car? -Jake in Iowa Dear Jake, Adding aftermarket electronics won’t void your warranty if the part you add to the car does not interfere with the operation of the car and the installation does not damage the car. When you have a remote car-starter installed make sure the shop that does it for you has trained installers who know your car. The shop should also have the technical support of a reputable company who stands behind the starters they sell. These things ensure that you will not have an issue with your warranty. On the other hand, we have seen many do it yourself installers create issues with the vehicles sensitive electronics that resulted in expensive dealership repair costs. When choosing a unit make sure you get one with the features you want such as the range you need; too short and you won’t be happy. -Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My car needs new front and rear brake pads and rotors. They offered me three different pad choices and I was confused and haven’t had the work done. I also want to know about rotors which seem expensive to replace. Why would I have to replace the rotors instead of machining them? My 2003 Honda currently has about 98,000 miles on it. -Mary in Yuma, Arizona Dear Mary, It’s common to have several choices of brake pads available but to avoid confusion with my own customers I take the time to explain the difference between pads and note that pad X is the factory specified pad. When there is a choice it’s usually a ceramic pad, a semi-metallic pad, and an organic pad. One will be what the factory specifies for the car while the other two can help cut noise and/or brake dust or save some cash. New rotors have really come down in price and many shops don’t machine them any longer as they wear so fast that they are often too thin to machine

Annual Open Enrollment By Tom Kuehne It’s the time of the year when the subject of Medicare enters into many conversations. Some individuals can be heard complaining about the deductibles and co-pays, but some of us can remember a time when Medicare didn’t exist. When we see the bills that are sent to Medicare or your Medicare Advantage plans, we are happy that we didn’t have to pay them from our own personal financial funds. Many Medicare recipients will experience broken hips or pneumonia, which usually results in a bill of over $30,000. The Medicare plans for 2022 have primarily not changed very much. There appears to be a generally slight decrease in the monthly premium, coupled with some small increases on deductibles and co-pays in both medical and drug plans. New plans for veterans are very attractive if their primary care is coming through the Veterans Administration. These plans offer savings in the part B charges and other benefits with no monthly premium costs. One thing to check out is the medical, dental and drug networks. September 16, 2021: Deputy Nate Younkin came across toilet paper hanging from trees and across the road in the area of Co. Rd. 17 and Co. Rd. 13 in Melrose Twp. A little sleuthing on his part and he found a group of young men parked on a side road who had an abundance of toilet paper with them. They were actually in the process of beginning to toilet paper another friend’s house. Deputy Younkin provided some life guidance and made arrangements for the group to clean up the areas that they had decorated. He was also kind enough to take a photo with them.

John R. Zeis
John R. “Papa John” Zeis, age 61 of Burtrum, passed away from complications of bacterial endocarditis resulting in strokes on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 2 at St. John’s the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Michael Bitz officiating. Interment will be held in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Grey Eagle. John Robert Zeis was born June 3, 1960 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota to Robert and Barbara (Rest) Zeis. He graduated from Park Center High School in Brooklyn Center. He was united in marriage to Sherry Hagstrom on August 16, 1980 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. John worked construction as a laborer and Local 49er for over 30 years, retiring in 2017. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, IUOE Local 49, and the Laborers’ Union. John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially traveling to Lake Nora in Canada where he would fish lake trout, northern, and walleye. He liked deer and pheasant hunting and enjoyed cutting wood; his wood piles were immaculate. John loved spending family time camping at Molly Lake. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, his legacy. John will be remembered as a person who was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Sherry Zeis of Burtrum; children, Rachel Klinnert of Sauk Centre, Jacob (Kelsey) Zeis of Burtrum, and Jessica (Clint) DeZeeuw of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Devin Klinnert, Macie Klinnert, Sawyer DeZeeuw, Sophie Zeis, Denver Zeis, Isla DeZeeuw, Ian Klinnert, Maverick Zeis, and Etta DeZeeuw; mothers, Judy Zeis of Burtrum and Barb (Ed) Rest of California City, California; brothers and sisters, Glenn Richard (Nancy) Zeis of Bloomington, Terry (Mike) Beauchane of Minneapolis, Mary (Greg) Irvine of Brookston, and Julie (Glen) Meyer of Freeport; and many loving relatives and friends. John was preceded in death by his father, Robert Zeis on February 17, 2016; father and mother-in-law, Leonard and Louise Hagstrom. Memorials are preferred. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.
