When Hurricane Melissa made landfall, the world watched. What came next was quintessentially Jamaican. Before the winds had settled, neighbours were checking on neighbours. Before the roads were cleared, communities were already clearing them. Before aid could be organised, ordinary people had already begun doing extraordinary things.
This issue of Home Sweet Jamaica is dedicated to the recovery. Not the bureaucratic version of recovery, not the one measured in government reports and damage assessments, but the human one. The one that happened in yards and villages and church halls and community centres across the island and within the diaspora that never stopped watching, praying, and sending what it could.
We celebrate the partnerships, local and international, that channelled resources where they were needed most. We honour the individuals who did not wait to be asked. We tell the stories that do not always make the headlines but that speak most truthfully about who we are as a people.
