Feaganes and Meade inducted into 12th class of WV Golf Hall of Fame The West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame revealed its first-ever inductees in 2009, when the incomparable pair of William C. Campbell and Sam Snead were enshrined as the inaugural class. The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) is extremely excited to announce the 2024 West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame inductees Joe Feaganes and Linden Meade. They join 21 others as recipients of this prestigious honor. Joe Feaganes was born in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and moved to Huntington at 12 where he attended Vinson Junior/Senior high school, graduating in 1962 . He lettered in football, basketball, track and golf. Before becoming a 1967 graduate of Marshall University, he was the Mid-American Conference Individual Champion in 1966 while being part of the MAC Championship Team. He was first team all-conference in 1966 and was named team captain his junior and senior years. Following college, Feaganes remained a competitive golfer, as he qualified for the 1968 U.S. Amateur and in 1975 was runner up in the West Virginia Amateur Championship. He became the Men’s Golf Coach at Marshall University in 1972 and remained until his retirement in 2012. He was the 1992 Southern Conference Coach of the Year, 1985-1990 NCAA National Golf Committee Chairman and president of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) from

2003-2004. He was the coach and team leader of the USA vs. Japan Collegiate matches four times and was the coach of the Collegiate Palmer Cup three times which was a match between US College All Americans and European College Players. Feaganes was inducted into the GCAA National Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. He received the Distinguished West Virginian Award in 2012. Marshall University’s yearly Collegiate event, is named for him. Linden Meade was born and raised in Chapmanville, WV, where he began working as a caddy at Logan Country Club at the age of 12. He later moved into the pro shop so he could have better golf playing privileges. He played for Chapmanville High School where he won the WV State High School Championship in 1955. Linden married Patricia Ann Toney in 1958 and they had three children. He attended Marshall University from 1955 to 1959 where he played collegiate golf. In 1956 Linden qualified for the US Amateur at Lake Forest, Illinois. While at Marshall he was selected three times to the Mid-American conference team. In 1957 and 1959 he was the runner up in the conference and 1958 he won the conference. He set the 18 and 36-hole conference record. In 1957 his team WVGA Hall of Fame Continued on page 3

qualified for the NCAA and in 1958 he qualified for the NCAA as an individual where he helped the East beat the West. In 1962 he played in the US Open at Oakmont CC. He is a two-time WV Open champion in 1963 and 1984. The 1963 title makes him one of three men to ever win a WV Open that Sam Snead played in. In 1971, Linden played on the PGA tour. He won the WV PGA championship three times in 1964,1972, and 1976 over his career. In 1982 he was selected as the WV Chapter Player of the Year. Then in 1984 he was WV Player of the year. Later in his career he qualified for the US Senior Open in 1988 at Medina CC and 1993 at Cherry Hills CC. In 1991, he was inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame. From 1959 to 1962, he taught at Logan High School where he started the first high school golf team and later at Chapmanville High School and Man Junior High School. He had two head professional jobs at Triadelphia CC in Man and Logan CC. Linden sold insurance for John Hancock before taking the head pro job at Riverview Country Club in Madison, WV. Meade has made a huge impact on WV golf over his lifetime teaching the game of golf to young and old in southern WV as a PGA teaching professional. Meade resides in Chapmanville.

WV Golf Association names Players of the Year and other top players for 2024 The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) celebrated West Virginia’s outstanding golfers in December at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane. Christian Brand of Hurricane was named the 2024 Men’s Player of the Year. He topped the leader board in the 105th West Virginia (WV) Amateur Championship, the 21st WV Mid-Amateur Championship and the Amateur Series at Edgewood Country Club. He tied for second in the WV Two-Man Scramble Championship and was a semifinalist in the WV Four-Ball Match Play Championship. He tied for fourth in the 91st WV Open Championship and made it to the Round of 16 at the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship. “Having been on the national stage, what we have here is really special. The people of the WVGA do so much with the capacity they have,” Brand said. “My parents took me everywhere and believed in me. I wouldn’t be half the man I am today without either of them. I’d like to thank my wife who probably gives more sacrifice for me to stand up here than anyone else. The perspective my son gives me is unmatched.” Susan Glasby of Chesapeake, Ohio, was named the 2024 Women’s Player of the Year, her third consecutive honor. She won the 101st WV Women’s Amateur Championship and the Amateur Series at both Edgewood Country Club and Riverside Golf Course. In
addition, she competed in the Round of 64 at the 37th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Of her third consecutive honor, she said, “I’d like to thank the WVGA for their support as a player and a female player. I’d like to thank all the other Players of the Year, as well as my husband, my daughter, my sister and my in-laws for always being supportive and having my back.” The Men’s Senior Player of the Year, for the sixth time, was Pat Carter of Huntington. He was champion of the WV Senior Open, tied for second at the WV Club Team Championship, placed third in the WV Four-Ball Championship and the WV Senior Four-Ball Championship. He was a qualifier Medalist and advanced to the Round of 32 at the 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. In addition to complimenting Christian Brand on his season and Chris Slack on his leadership of WVGA, he said, “I love the WVGA and I’m very passionate about playing golf for West Virginia. The future of golf is strong in this state.” The Women’s Senior Player of the Year was Karen Rainey of Daniels. She won an individual first at the WV Club Team Championship, had five top two finishes in the Amateur Series, placed second in the WV Two-Lady Scramble Championship, was on the Top 2 Team in all four Ladies League events, placed Players of the Year Continued on page 5

team third in the Women’s Intra-State Matches and placed fifth in the WV Women’s Senior Amateur Championship. “We see the best and the worst in each other during four hours on the course,” she said, “but we keep showing up every time. I am forever grateful for the love and support of my family. The game of golf has opened my world to the most amazing people and some great experiences.” Jackson Woodburn of Scott Depot was the Boy’s Player of the Year. He was the Low Junior at the 91st WV Open Championship, a semifinalist in the WV Junior Match Play Championship, was a first alternate in U.S. Open local qualifying, placed fourth in the WV Junior Amateur Championship, placed sixth in the WV Tri-State PGA Classic and has a records of 2-1-0 in the WV North/South Junior Invitational. In an uncharacteristically long speech, he said, “I love West Virginia and being able to play some beautiful courses. I look forward to continuing to grow as both a player and a person. Thank you, and go Herd.” The Girl’s Junior Player of the Year was Savannah Hawkins of Hurricane. She placed first in the WV Junior Match Play Championship, the WV Junior Amateur Championship and the WV Parent-Child Championship. She placed second (following a playoff) in the 101st WV Women’s Amateur Championship and compiled a record of 2-1-0 in the WV North/South Junior Invitational. She said capturing the Player of the Year was a goal for her final season of junior golfer. “I’ve been playing in the Women’s Am since I was 12, and I’ve been paired with either

Susan or Karen every year. Jackson and I have been playing together since 6th grade and now we’re both at Marshall,” she said. She said Pat and Christian have been great support over the years. She also thanked her parents for their unwavering support in everything she does. The 2024 WV Amateur Series presented by PSIMED Players of the Year were: • Championship Division: Davey Jude of Kermit; • Men’s Division: Jerry McKisic of Buckhannon; and • Women’s Division: Karen Rainey of Daniels. The Senior Series Players of the Year were: • Senior Gross Division: John Ridenour of Long Bottom, OH; • Silver Gross Division: John Duty of Hurricane; • Silver Net Division: William Kincaid of Charleston; • Gold Gross Division: Neil Christiansen of Parkersburg. • Gold Net Division: David Snyder of South Charleston Dakota Carpenter received the 2024 Larry Martin Sportsman of the Year Award from the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), as voted on by his peers and Tour administrators. This award is named after Larry Martin, known as “The Old Pro,” who founded the West Virginia Golf Association’s (WVGA) Junior Tour 40 years ago. Award eligibility is open to a boy or girl 18 and under who is a member of the 2024 CJRT, demonstrates good sportsmanship on and off the golf course, embodies what it means to be a “good sport” and shows class at every golf course and demonstrates what it means to be a member of the Junior Tour. WVGA Director of Junior Golf and Core Services Lucas Ware said, “Dakota is the definition of a sportsman.” Carpenter, from Camden on Gauley, plays in the Boys 17-18 Division. The 2024 Callaway Junior Tour Players of the Year were: • Boys 12 & Under: Bentley Shirkey of Barboursville played in 13 events, placing first eight times, second four times and third once for a total of 350 points. He had two Low Rounds of the Day for Boys. •
Boys 13-14: Blaine Morgan of Bluefield played in 13 events, winning once, placing second twice and third three times for a total of 184 points.

Boys 15-16: Cameron Fallon of Parkersburg played in 10 events, winning four times, placing second twice and third three times for a total of 222.5 points. He had three Low Rounds of the Day for Boys.

Boys 17-18: Caleb Young of Fairmont played in 12 events, winning nine events and placing second or third one time each for a total of 300.84 points. He had three Low Rounds of the Day for Boys.

Girls 10-14: Valentina Aguilar of Elkins played in 11 events, placing first six times, second three times and third twice for a total of 280 points.

Girls 15-18: Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana played in 10 events, winning all 10, for a total of 315 points. She had 10 wins and 10 Low Rounds of the Day for Girls.

USGA P.J. Boatwright Internship Program benefits WV Golf Association and interns In 1991, the USGA established the P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program, in which the WVGA has been participating for many years. This program is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration, while assisting state and regional golf associations in the promotion of amateur golf, on a short-term, entry-level basis. Each internship is different, since the needs vary from association to association. An intern may help conduct tournaments, junior golf programs, membership services and other general activities that promote the best interests of golf. Arrangements for multiple summer employment are possible as well. The common thread running through the internship is exposure to tournament preparations, administration and post-tournament business.
The nature of tournament administration will test one’s patience, initiative and decision-making abilities, as well as one’s ability to endure long hours and hard work. A prospective intern should demonstrate strong managerial potential and a sufficient interest in golf. The WVGA provided an appropriate level of orientation and ongoing training and attention. Each intern becomes an employee of the golf association, which will have primary responsibility for recruitment, and sole responsibility for compensation and supervision. Upon completion of the program, the USGA receives evaluations from both the association and the intern. The West Virginia Golf Association is one of 60 golf organizations that may use these interns. Not eligible for hire are golf professionals; USGA employees or their relatives; USGA committee members or their relatives; as well as WVGA and organization employees and officials or their relatives. 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WILLIAM C. CAMPBELL
SCHOLARSHIP
The William C. Campbell Scholarship was established in 1999 by the West T V Virginia Golf Association. Formed in the honor of Mr. Campbell for his international nternational accomplishments p as an amateur ggolfer and volunteer. Mr. Campbell is one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game. His winning record includes the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Senior Amateur, three titles on the West Virginia Open, as well as 15 West Virginia Amateur titles. Campbell was also a runner-up in both the U.S. Senior Open and British Amateur. He has been a member of eight Walker Cup teams, where he was undefeated in eight singles matches (7-0-1). As an ambassador and volunteer to the game, Mr. Campbell was the only person to serve as both President of the United States Golf Association and Captain of the Royal & Ancient Club at St. Andrews, the two primary governing bodies of golf in the world. In 1990, Campbell was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame; and in 2009, was inducted into the inaugural class of the West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame. Mr. Campbell passed away August 30, 2013 but his legend will not be forgotten. William C. Campbell Scholarships are awarded each year to graduating students based on their merit and involvement in the game of golf. Funds for the Campbell Scholarship are generated by generous donors and through the annual William C. Campbell Classic. The William C. Campbell Classic takes place on the Old White course at The Greenbrier Resort. We invite all golfers, with the initiative to support the scholarship, to register. All proceeds from the event go towards the William C. Campbell Scholarship.
