Year of change culminates with new Executive Director being named
The year 2023 has been a year of change for the WVGA. Change was precipitated by former Executive Director Brad Ulman’s resignation to move on to a leadership role within the LIV Tour, capitalizing on his organizational skills, attention to detail, knowledge of the Rules of Golf and tournament administration, much of which was developed in his several years with the WVGA. While all at the WVGA are proud of Brad’s achievements on the world stage, his sudden departure left a void that had to be quickly filled. Brad’s resignation was effective the first of the year. The natural timing for state golf association executives to explore new opportunities is inherently at a different time of the year, generally October and November, not in the first quarter of a year. Applications were received, carefully screened and reviewed by the WVGA officers. As onset of the competition season was to begin, starting with the West Virginia vs. Virginia Team Matches at Charlottesville, Virginia the first of April, decisions had to be made. At its core, the WVGA has been the platform for competitive golf in our state and to that end, with 12 years of experience with the WVGA and as the former Director of Competitions and Rules,
it became clear that the recommendation to the full Executive Committee would be fulfill the historic core mission of the organization and turn to Chris Slack to fill the role of Interim Executive Director. He has since been named Executive Director. As the competitive season unfolded, there were record setting numbers of WV golfers attempting to qualify for the WV Amateur Championship staged at The Greenbrier over the Memorial Day Weekend. It was highlighted by what has been acclaimed as perhaps the best Players Banquet in over 100 years of the WV Amateur Championship and largely a product of the exemplary creative and organizational skills of the WVGA Director of Finance and Administration, Danielle Monk. As the competitive season unfolded, other highlights included the 100th WV Women’s Amateur Championship at Edgewood Country Club with various accompanying activities to commemorate and celebrate the historic anniversary; and, then there was a simply phenomenal WV Open Championship hosted by Berry Hills Country Club where club pro Barry Evans, his team and the club’s membership pulled out all stops to set a record for purse payouts as well as social value for participants and spectators. While all this was going on there was a record setting year for First Tee - West Virginia, an escalation in participation in the Callaway Junior Tour, the WV Amateur Tour, the Rookie Slack named ED Continued on back cover

WV Golf Association names Players of the Year and other top players for 2023 The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) celebrated West Virginia’s outstanding golfers in December at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane. Davey Jude of Kermit was named the 2023 Men’s Player of the Year, his second consecutive year. He was the WV Tri-State PGA Classic champion, co-champion of the Four-Ball Match Play Championship, and was runner-up at both the WV Mid-Amateur and WV Amateur Championships. In addition, he qualified for the 2024 USGA Four-ball championship and represented Team WV in the WV vs. VA and Captain’s Putter Matches. “It’s an honor to be here back-to-back years, especially since it came down to the last tournament this year to win Player of the Year,” Jude said. “I’m happy to be able to play the WVGA tournaments and represent my hometown.” Susan Glasby of Chesapeake, Ohio, was named the 2023 Women’s Player of the Year, her second consecutive honor. She won of the 100th WV Women’s Amateur Championship, the Ladies Scramble and won an Amateur Series event. She was the only female competitor in the WV Tri-State PGA Classic, finishing in the top 50 percent, and competed in the 2023 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. “It’s nice to achieve this honor two years in a row. It means the first year wasn’t luck,” Glasby said.
The Men’s Senior Player of the Year, for the fifth time, was Pat Carter of Huntington. He was champion of the WV Senior Open, the Senior Four-Ball Championship, and the Four-Ball Match Play co-champion. He had top finishes in the WV Tri-State PGA Classic, the WV Senior Amateur and the WV Open Championship. In addition, Carter was a member of Captain’s Putter matches. The Women’s Senior Player of the Year was Daneen Shears of Elizabeth. She was a top-six finisher in three Amateur Series events, top-15 finisher in the 100th WV Women’s Amateur Championship, Women’s Senior Amateur runner-up and represented WV at the Virginia’s vs. Carolina’s Women’s Team Matches. In addition, she is the Wirt County High School golf coach. “I am very shocked and thrilled that I am the Women’s Senior Player of the Year,” Shears said. “It’s a great honor and I’m thankful for my family’s support.” Jack Michael of Huntington was the Boy’s Player of the Year. runner-up. In addition, he was a member of the North/South Junior Invitational, represented Team WV at the Junior Virginia’s vs. Carolina’s team matches and advanced to the final stage of U.S. Open Qualifying. “I am very honored to be the Boy’s Player of the Year,” Michael said. “I’d like to thank the WVGA for putting on such amazing events and enabling me to bring my game to the next level and represent myself very well country-wide and statewide.” For the third consecutive year, the Girl’s Junior Player of the Year was Kerri-Anne Cooke of Oceana. She had seven Callaway Junior Tour wins and was the WV Junior Amateur Champion. She was the Ladies Scramble Championship runner-up, placed second in the WV Junior Match Play and finished in the top 10 at the 100th WV Women’s Amateur Championship. Cook was a member of the North/South Junior Invitational and was the first individual female champion at the WVSSAC High School State Golf Championship. “It’s really special just to be in this position and I appreciate everything the WVGA has done this year,” Cook said. Anna Earl received the 2023 Larry Martin Sportsman of the Year Award from the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA), as voted on by her peers and Tour administrators. This award is named after Larry Martin, known as “The Old Pro”, who founded the West Virginia Golf Association’s (WVGA) Junior Tour 40 years ago. Award eligibility is open to a boy or girl 18 and under who is a member of the 2023 CJRT, demonstrates good sportsmanship on and off the golf course, embodies what it means to be a “good sport” and shows class at every golf course and

demonstrates what it means to be a member of the Junior Tour. WVGA Tournament Manager – Youth Operations Lucas Ware said, “Anna Earl is the definition of a sportsman, and it was only fitting for her to win the award at Parkersburg Country Club, her home club and workplace, and, thanks to the late Larry Martin, the birthplace of the Junior Tour.” The 2023 Callaway Junior Tour Players of the Year were: • Boys 12 and under: Jude Walker of Elizabeth; • Boys 13-14: Isaac Hayes of Hurricane; • Boys 15-16: Stephen McDavid of Scott Depot; • Boys 17-18: Caleb Young of Fairmont; • Girls 10-14: Isabelle Studli of Fairfield, Pa.; and • Girls 15-18: Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana. The Senior Series Players of the Year were: • Senior Division: John Ridenour of Long Bottom, OH; • Silver Division: Scott Perry of Lowell, OH; and • Gold Division: Neil Christiansen of Parkersburg. The 2023 WV Amateur Series presented by PSIMED Players of the Year were: • Championship Division: Chuck Henderson of Vienna; • Men’s Division: Bill Capelety of Farmington; and • Women’s Division: Karen Rainey of Daniels. WVGA Interim Executive Director Chris Slack said, “We would like to congratulate all our winners this evening. This is a great group of golfers and sportspeople. Ramsey inducted into WV Golf Hall of Fame Caroline Hornor Ramsey was inducted into the West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame on November 10 at the Bridgeport Country Club. Ramsey, a Harrison County native and daughter of J. Robert and Mary Louise Horner, began playing golf with her family and friends in her early teens and the Clarksburg Country Club. Caroline won four West Virginia Women’s Amateur Championships (1969, 1975, 2001, 2002), and 14 West Virginia Senior Women’s Championships (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016) and the 2014 Women’s Player of the Year. On the golf course, she is known for her competitiveness and sportsmanship. She competed for 30 years in the Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches. Caroline represented West Virginia seven times in the USGA State Team Championship. She also competed in several USGA Senior Women’s Amateurs, Southern Women’s Amateurs and Southern Senior Women’s Amateurs. She has won the Bridgeport Country Club Women’s Championship 21 times and been a participant and team captain for 50 years in the West Virginia State Intra-Club Matches. Caroline’s love of sports led her to coaching youth in numerous sports at recreational, high school and collegiate levels. at West Virginia Wesleyan College, she was the first coach of the Women’s Basketball Program and was the field hockey coach in the 1970s. She was inducted into the West Virginia Wesleyan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017. Caroline and her husband, Dean, reside in Bridgeport. They have four daughters and seven grandchildren.

USGA P.J. Boatwright Internship Program benefits WV Golf Association and interns In 1991, the USGA established the P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program, in which the WVGA has been participating for many years. This program is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration, while assisting state and regional golf associations in the promotion of amateur golf, on a short-term, entry-level basis. Each internship is different, since the needs vary from association to association. An intern may help conduct tournaments, junior golf programs, membership services and other general activities that promote the best interests of golf. Arrangements for multiple summer employment are possible as well. The common thread running through the internship is exposure to tournament preparations,

administration and post-tournament business. The nature of tournament administration will test one’s patience, initiative and decision-making abilities, as well as one’s ability to endure long hours and hard work. A prospective intern should demonstrate strong managerial potential and a sufficient interest in golf. The WVGA provided an appropriate level of orientation and ongoing training and attention. Each intern becomes an employee of the golf association, which will have primary responsibility for recruitment, and sole responsibility for compensation and supervision. Upon completion of the program, the USGA receives evaluations from both the association and the intern. The West Virginia Golf Association is one of 60 golf organizations that may use these interns. Not eligible for hire are golf professionals; USGA employees or their relatives; USGA committee members or their relatives; as well as association and organization employees and officials or their relatives. Swing into the new year as a VIP Card holder VIP Card Holders have access to 66 West Virginia private, public and resort courses at EXCLUSIVE VIP rates. They also receive an official Handicap Index for score posting and each golfer has a specific, private number assigned to them. When you purchase the VIP Card you are a member of the WVGA and are eligible to participate in WVGA events. 2024 West Virginia VIP Card Rules & Regulations: • 2024 West Virginia VIP Cardholder is entitled to the round(s) of golf listed from 1/1/2024 through 12/31/2024. • Some clubs may limit daily VIP play at their discretion. Please call ahead for tee times. • Fee includes motorized cart, unless otherwise noted. • Please call 24 hours in advance of requesting a tee time, you must ID yourself as a West Virginia VIP cardholder. • VIP Cards may not be used for tournaments or special events. • Cardholder must present their VIP Card before playing. ID may be requested, VIP Cards are non-transferrable. • Cardholder must abide by dress code and other regulations of the VIP course. • Members 17 and younger must play with an adult. • Replacement VIP Cards are $15, payable to the WVGA. The First Tee hosted 15th “The” Ben McGraw First Tee Classic in October Benjamin McGraw, a Concord University freshman who loved golf, boxing, skiing and time with his family and friends, is the namesake of “The” Ben McGraw First Tee Classic. He graduated from the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. His love of golf also included teaching young golfers at The First Tee of Beckley each summer and he planned to attend the Golf Academy of America in pursuit of a career working with the future participants of the game about which he was so passionate. As we celebrated the 15th anniversary of this annual event in October, we continued to honor Ben and his family who have always dedicated themselves to growing the game not only in Raleigh County but throughout the state of West Virginia. Each year, First Tee - West Virginia holds several premier fundraising and community events, like the Starlit Soiree, to help us serve our ever-growing number of participants. These events are only made possible because of the generosity of our sponsors, who allow us to make each event a rousing success. Our fundraising events are designed for our supporters, both individual and corporate. They are a great way for all individuals to learn more about us while having fun. First Tee hosted Par-Tee in November in Charleston for “Clubs in Hands” Campaign To support our mission and increase awareness, the First Tee – West Virginia hosted its first Par-Tee Fundraiser at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Charleston on November 11th, sponsored by the John L. Dickinson Family. Par Tee, an inaugural fundraiser supporting our Clubs in Hands Campaign featured a live and silent auction hosted by special guest, Jim Strawn. DJ Nick Scott created the perfect ParTee atmosphere on and off the dance floor. Fun was had by all who attended, and everyone heard more about First Tee – West Virginia’s impact on our community from First Tee Executive Director Jeff Preast and President Philip Reale.

Tour and the WV Senior Series. It has been a good year, despite starting a little slow, catching up in time to execute the WVGA’s core mission, while finding ways to grow the game through concentrated efforts to increase opportunities for youth and female golfers. However, the real story is that the heart and soul of the WVGA is its staff, all of whom are household names for the WV golfing community. Hats off to Chris Slack, Danielle Monk, Jeff Preast, Lucas Ware and Sarah Cole. They are selfless in attitude, tireless in work ethic and rigid in their desire to bring about the best possible experience for WV’s golfing community. For those who read this newsletter, the hope is that you will reach out to the staff and thank them for doing all those many things that have to be done. It is a massive undertaking to execute the business of the WVGA. The staff of the organization makes it happen as a labor of love.
