WELCOME SEPTEMBER AND HAPPY LABOR DAY

The last time Labor Day was on September 1st was 2020 and we were in the quarantine/COVID mode. Thankfully, life has been restored to some degree of normalcy or a new normal. Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer though officially the fall season begins September 22nd.

In some ways each day, each month, each season is a new beginning. New beginnings can be daunting. I recently saw a social media post entitled “Start by” which was interesting and encouraging. A few items were: Start by doing one push up; start by reading 1 page; start by walking 1 lap, etc. Start today. Repeat tomorrow. On a personal fun note, I always thought doing jigsaw puzzles would be fun but never got started. At the August Pins for Paws bowling event, a silent auction item was a puzzle board with 2 1008-piece Advent puzzles. I won it! Very daunting! However, the puzzles are divided into twenty-four boxes of 42 puzzle pieces. Starting on December 1st I should have one completed by December 24th.

Of course, my list of “Start By” activities does include more than completing a jigsaw puzzle. The underlying concept is that by dividing our tasks or goals into smaller pieces we can overcome personal inertia. Whether it’s resistance to change, preference for status quo, fear of the unknown, or the dual combo of procrastination or perfectionism. Embracing the Joys, Savoring the Moments, Creating the Memories

arenting, whether of pets or children, is serious, difficult and, at times, very stressful. Being responsible pet parents involves caring for all their physical, emotional and mental needs. It can be time consuming and demanding. More is expected of pet parents today – nutritious meals, walks, playtime, an enriched environment and veterinarian visits, and so on. However, as essential as these are we must also cultivate the bond between us. Perhaps if we take our responsibilities too seriously; we can miss out of moments of joy; miss out on just being with our pets. It’s a delicate balancing act. Reflecting on an experience I had ten years ago with my eight-yearold granddaughter prompted me to wonder if I was missing out on some precious moments and memories with my pets. We were at a kid-friendly pizza place and they had placemats with activities for children. One was a “do you know what this is?” quiz. Two of the objects were a manual typewriter and a rotary telephone. She especially enjoyed the rotary phone and the “party line” stories. We laughed and had a great time together. While we were eating our pizza, I noticed a father and

his two children, probably eight or nine years old. Each one was looking at their phone or device. No talking or laughing. They missed an opportunity for a shared experience of fun, conversation and food. I wondered, am I missing moments of shared experiences with my pets? Here are a few ways to embrace the joys, savor the moments and create memories with our pets:

❖ Simply relax together and allow your pet to feel your presence.

❖ Show affection by cuddling or

petting your pet. Studies show that petting a dog or cat can trigger the release of endorphins and other “feel-good” hormones such as oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine in both pets and people. These hormones naturally boost feelings of happiness, calmness and love.

❖ Talk to your pet in a soft

soothing voice. In 2020 Canine Cottages conducted a study which demonstrated that the heart rates of dogs skyrocketed when their parents said “I love you”. There was a 46% increase from 67 bpm

to 98 bpm suggesting shared emotional responses.

❖

Look into their eyes – you’ll see love and compassion. Let your pet look into your eyes and see the love you feel for them. Studies also indicate that the loving mutual gaze triggers a surge of oxytocin or “love hormone” in both pet and human.

❖

Love them unconditionally and giving them freedom to just be with us. They can let go of all the stresses of being a pet in a modern world. For us, it’s a time when we don’t need anything from them except their presence. A time and space where we can be together. Regardless of what’s going on around us and within us we can enjoy the freedom to just be and to enjoy this moment with them.

As the weather gets colder, it’s easy to replace walks and park outings with streaming services and cuddles. You might start to notice your fur baby a little bit “fluffier” in Fall and Winter. Even a few extra pounds on your 4-legged kiddo can spell disaster! Obesity leads to joint issues, heart disease, diabetes, and can even shorten your pet’s life. To avoid putting your dog or cat at risk, consider these lifestyle adjustments.

Here’s 5 Ways to Keep Your Fur Kids Slim and Trim Kibble for Training 1 Use Is your pup still learning to Sit, Stay, and Switch the

Laundry? Training shouldn’t cease during the colder months; however, using chunks of hot dog or large pieces of cheese as positive reinforcement could lead to weight gain. Try using their kibble as rewards. Most dogs are just excited to be rewarded… even without the high-value yummies. (You’ll want to consider these “treats” as part of their meal, so adjust the serving size accordingly.)

Responsibly 2 TreatYour baby is a good boy or girl! And let’s be

honest, we enjoy giving them treats almost as much as they enjoy getting them. Instead of loading up their bellies with cookies throughout the day, try healthy, natural options like carrots, cucumbers, sweet potatoes (cooked), apples (remove all the seeds first), blueberries, green beans, etc. Too much of anything isn’t healthy; however, they can enjoy nibbles of fresh fruits and veggies throughout the day. (Always check to make sure your snack of choice is pet-safe.) Natural, healthy cookies are still a great option, but limit them to one or two per day.

Serving Sizes 3 Adjust If your dog’s activity level has dropped significantly, and

you notice the weight on the scale is slowly creeping up, it may be time to reevaluate their serving sizes… Somewhere, a dog just ate this magazine to keep their owner from reading this.

Outdoor Exercise 4 Maintain As Long As Possible Living in Vegas, there are very few months when we truly can’t do anything outside. If your dog enjoys walks or a good sniff session at the park, keep going! If it’s extra cold, pack your pup in a sweater and consider booties to protect their paws from icy terrain.

Indoors 5 Play Even when you can’t go outside, there’s still fun to be had

indoors. Play ball or tug of war, or create an obstacle course out of pillows, blankets, and tunnels. You can also feed your babies using puzzle toys to keep their minds sharp. If you’ve got stairs, you’ve got a perfect track for the zoomies. (Make sure you train your pet not to race you on the stairs, as this can be dangerous for everyone.)

Conclusion

The colder months don’t need to wreak havoc on your pet’s health (or yours, for that matter!). Maintain some level of activity, use healthier treats, and adjust their meals if needed. A slim pet is a healthy pet, and a healthy pet is a happy pet. TRAVELSwith Little Rhody By G. Bedrosian

henever we plan to travel, Little Rhody knows. He has canine telepathy. He follows us from room to room, alert and ever watchful, waiting for two words: let’s go! He beats us to the door and sits or poses in play mode. Though he doesn’t like road noise or moving fast, he loves being with us. Perched in his safety harness on my right shoulder calms him, making him feel secure. Be it long or short, most of our travels are by car. Little Rhody’s pup-pack stays in the car always ready to meet his needs. It holds his treats, food, bowl, toys, meds, and veterinary records. Bottled water is in our cooler. His travel bed and harness remain secured to the car’s back seat. Our most frequent trip was to Douglas County in Northern Nevada to visit with our son’s family. Traveling the 8 hours on Route 95, Mina is our first road break. It offers an enclosed, well-maintained park with clean restrooms, picnic tables, and shade trees. We

three lunch and stretch our legs. Little Rhody explores the area visiting every tree, pole or table leg and chasing the pigeons. It’s an enjoyable respite for all of us. We three enjoy our travels together yet Little Rhody does not like being near or in water. When we plan ocean visits, pup-pack in tow, he stays with our neighbor and his Weimaraner buddy, ‘Gunner’. Our forever favorite road trip is our 2020 home coming with him from his Shih Tsu litter. On that drive we named him Little Rhody, our beloved home state Rhode Island’s nickname. With me in my seatbelt, him in his tiny safety harness, we were heartbeat to heartbeat, bonded forever. To this day, on travels with Little Rhody, this is still his favorite perch.

hat’s a role model? An Individual who demonstrates character traits or habits we value. For the openhearted, role models come in all shapes and sizes. What trait do you admire? There are many. Patience, forgiveness, or comradery? Have you ever stared at your pet and thought, “Wish I could be more like that”? Our pets are with us through seasons, years, changes, and moments of growth. Sometimes they teach through modeling appropriate behaviors, other times by forms of persuasion. When kids don’t rise to give pets a morning meal, dogs nudge. Cats may tap, poke, or swat faces to waken their humans. What child hasn’t learned to be more thoughtful by spending time with a cherished pet? Animals reward proper attention with snuggles and purrs. They also model compassion when a child is hurt or sad. What children receive, they learn to give.

MODELING PATIENCE

A family takes their dogs and cats to a new veterinarian. They place their cat carriers into the car as their leashed dogs jump in. The kids and dogs wait as mom drives. One cat, too. The other cat, not so much. The dogs and one cat model patience, the other, not at all. In times like this we all choose to trust or fret. Once the car stops, pets enjoy the wonder of a new place with new scents, sounds, and sights… or not. We watch and respond. A calm pet adds to the family’s peace and yes, patience. It’s easier to wait when your pet is calm, isn’t it?

MODELING FORGIVENESS

Family dogs and cats are happy to leave the veterinarian and go home. Another cat may pout, hide, and ignore attempts to reconcile. But, in true kitty fashion she will emerge when ready, hungry, or to check on her human and the rest of her domain. Ultimately, most animals forgive and forget before bedtime. 20

MODELING COMRADERY In times of crisis, you may find an unusual bond between your pets. Not long ago we had three cats in the house. Neither Sammy nor Mimow cared much for each other, but Wriggley, a special-needs kitty was well taken care of by both Mimow and Sammy. Hearing a fuss, we came running. A scorpion had entered our home. Sammy and Mimow joined forces protecting Wriggley leaving the scorpion dead on its back. All were unharmed. This is not the best method of pest control,but our respect for the instincts and comradery of our pets grew that day and provided a treasured lesson.

We really do reap what we sow in relationships. When we provide proper training for animals and children in stable environments, both can become role models for each other and if we pay attention, for us.

HAPPY CAT MONTH – it’s time to celebrate those fabulous adorable felines who give us so much joy and fun. We love our cats and want them to be happy.

Life is monotonous for many indoor cats; what looks like contentment to us is boredom for them. Here are a few life-enriching ideas for adding happiness and fun to your cat’s life: Smell is a cat’s most important sense. A great way to enrich their lives is with scents. Bringing the outdoors inside is one way to offer new smells. Cooler weather brings fresh smells as well as new sounds and sights. Dogs are allowed outdoors for potty breaks; they get to go on walks and get to sniff and explore - activities indoor-only cats don’t get to enjoy. Cat towers or window perches help them view the outside world safely. Opening the window allows them to enjoy the smells and scents of a new season. Other ways to provide new scents is using items such as catnip or silver vine, or by letting your cat sniff your shoes when you come inside. Even sniffing the mail stimulates their sense of smell.

Daily playtime with cats is extremely important for their physical, emotional and mental health and happiness. Interacting with us is one of the most important ways to enrich our cat’s life. Most cats are playful. They enjoy a variety of games and toys. Cats appreciate routine yet do get bored. It’s important to rotate their toys, games and activities to provide for emotional and social stimulation. Indoor cats do not have to hunt for food. Yet by making small changes to their routine, we can encourage them to take a more active role in “hunting” for their food. Placing small portions in different locations encourages foraging and entices them to search for their meals.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION INDOOR CAT How to Enrich Their Lives and Expand their World by Laura J. Moss, founder Adventure Cats and Lynn Bahr, DVM

I recently listened to a podcast interview Dr. Lynn Bahr, a feline-only veterinarian. Her tips were helpful and her responses were insightful. I bought the book and wasn’t disappointed. It’s written in the same concise, insightful and helpful manner as the interview. Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, it compares the confinement, the loss of normal daily routines, and the lack of social activities people experienced to the confinement and monotony of an indoor cat’s environment. For many indoor cats, daily life is like an endless quarantine yet with fewer choices available to them. It was an interesting analogy This comparison or analogy provides the motivation to examine your cat’s life, how to add more options or opportunities for enriching their lives. It offers suggestions, guidance and real-life tips for creating a stimulating life for cats. Whether you’re a new cat parent or have had cats for years, there will be helpful new tips and helpful reminders for every cat lover.

The book has awesome cat photos, informative content and an engaging easy-to-follow layout. One design feature I really appreciated were the two Points of View presented in each chapter. For example, in Chapter 7 on Playing, the left-hand side was “Your POV: I’ve tried playing with my cat, but he doesn’t want to play.” The right-hand side or box was “Kitty POV: I love to play. You’re just not playing the way I like”. A neat approach to help us visualize how far we might be in our POV from our cat’s POV.

Loved the introduction: Are we giving our cats the nine lives they deserve? Another chapter I really appreciated was titled Stereotypes, Stigmas, and “Meowntal” Health. It discussed history, culture, society and views on cats. Included the interesting origin about the crazy cat lady stereotype. Its roots go back centuries. Cats and women have often been associated with witchcraft. Sometimes just having a cat was enough for a woman to be associated with witchcraft. This chapter is a read-again one for me! I appreciated the POVs opening the last chapter, The Feline Future:

TIPS FOR DINING OUT WITH YOUR DOG in Las Vegas

ow that the weather is cooling down, alfresco (or open-air) dining is a popular choice for restaurant goers in Las Vegas. If you’re a dog owner, it’s also a great option for eating out with your furry best friend. Nevada law prohibits dogs from going inside restaurants, but food establishments with proper waivers can welcome dogs in designated outdoor dining spaces, such as patios or terraces with exterior entrances. There’s no shortage of local restaurants with outdoor spaces where you can eat with your dog. As it turns out, there are 242 dog-friendly restaurants in Las Vegas, according to the website BringFido.com Before you and your dog jump in the car and head to a spot on the list, there are some considerations. Read on for some tips to ensure the best dining experience for all involved.

Who’s a good boy?

Most dog-friendly restaurants have rules for the behavior of their canine guests; for instance, no barking, growling, begging, biting, or jumping up and bothering other guests. Before bringing your pup to a restaurant, consider your dog’s temperament. How does he act around other dogs and people? If he gets anxious or angry, you may want to reconsider bringing him along, not only for the sake of others but for your dog’s sake as well. It helps if your dog is well-trained and responds to basic commands. The American Kennel Club recommends

its Canine Good Citizen (CGC) training program, a 10-skill test that produces well-mannered dogs and dog owners. After completing the CGC, your dog won’t just be a good boy, but the best boy.

Call ahead, come prepared

Some local dog-friendly dining establishments have treats, water, and even special dog-friendly menus for canine guests, but not all. Check ahead. If there isn’t any food for your dog, feed her before you arrive to minimize her hunger and desire to beg for table scraps. Here are some items to bring along to maximize your dining experience: ● Collapsible water bowl ● Water ● Towel, blanket, or small bed for your dog to sit or lie on ● A leash ● Treats for rewarding good behavior ● Poop bags, just in case It’s a good idea to walk your dog before arriving at the restaurant. It will tire her out, calm her down, and let her take care of her business.

Keep your dog on a short leash

Dog-friendly dining areas aren’t for free-roaming animals (although you might see a pigeon or two). Your dog should remain on a leash, on the

ground, and out of high-traffic areas and aisleways. Scruffy isn’t allowed in the seats, on your lap, or on tables, not only because it’s inappropriate, but because it violates health codes. It’s also against health codes to let your dog eat off your plate. Most dog-friendly restaurants have separate bowls and plates designated for puppy patrons. If you have a super social dog who relishes making new friends, ask the owners’ permission before approaching their dogs—and always keep yours on a leash.

Pay attention to your dog Your meal may be delicious and your human company delightful, but don’t let that distract you from your canine companion. Even the most predictable and well-behaved dogs have moments of unpredictability in the event of a loud noise, another dog, or random gust of air.

Finally, if your dog has a potty accident, clean it up. It’s not the wait staff’s job.

Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats By Gail Mayhugh

In June, I had the pleasure of being a vendor at a local animal organization’s fundraiser. I packed my booth with all kinds of pet goodies, but my best sellers were my homemade Give-A-Dog-A-Bone treats which sold out! Honestly, who can resist a fresh-baked treat made with love? Certainly not my dogs, they were more than happy to be the official taste testers (and they took their job very seriously). Making your own dog treats isn’t just fun, it’s a healthy way to pamper your furry family members. You get to control the ingredients, skip the preservatives, and tailor flavors to your pup’s preferences. Plus, they make paws-itively perfect holiday gifts for your fellow dog-loving friends. You can find some adorable packaging ideas on Pinterest. I always feel so touched when someone remembers my dogs during the holidays, they’re not just pets, they’re my kids.

The treats I made were Pumpkin Peanut Butter. Here’s the ingredients and instructions.

INGREDIENTS: Makes about 60 treats 2 cups of whole wheat flour, add as needed 1 cup old fashion rolled oats, not the instant oats 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree, do not use pumpkin pie filling ❖ 1/4 cup natural creamy peanut butter ❖ 2 large eggs ❖ 1 tbsp coconut oil ❖ ❖ ❖ ❖

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or Silpat mats. Those are my liners of choice. 2. Combine dry ingredients then add wet ingredients and mix the dough with your hands. I tried our mixer but found using my hands much easier and less clean up. Add flour if the dough is too wet, it should be somewhat dry, but not flaky, so that it will roll out. 3. Roll out the dough on a floured mat. Cut into shapes or use fun cookie cutters. The ones I used are from The Cunhill Store on Amazon, they are so cute and easy to use. If you use the cookie cutters, here’s a tip, push down firmly when in the form, when you transfer it to the baking sheet, remove the form and press the shape down again. I found that it gave a nice, detailed image. 34

4. Bake for 25-30 minutes depending upon your oven, or until crisp. Some might puff up a bit with others staying flat, which is fine. People always ask if I’ve tried them. Well, yes I did. All the ingredients are items we’d put in our own homemade cookies, but without any sugar. So, what did they taste like? Absolutely nothing. But I have to say, they smell great when baking… the aroma of cinnamon. All that matters is that my pups love them!

THE REFLECTION OF OUR SOULS: How Animals Help Us Understand Ourselves

s humans, we often find ourselves searching for deeper meaning and understanding of our place in the world. We look to philosophers, spiritual leaders, and even our own experiences to gain insight into the complexities of our existence. But what if we told you that another source of wisdom and self-discovery can be found in the animal kingdom? From our pets to wild creatures in their natural habitats, animals have a way of reflecting our own emotions, behaviors, and even our souls. Let’s examine how animals help us understand ourselves.

HOW ANIMALS MIRROR OUR EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIORS Have you ever noticed how your pet seems to understand your emotions, even when you don’t say a word? Animals have an incredible ability to mirror our emotions and behaviors, which can help us gain a deeper understanding of ourselves. For example, if you’re feeling anxious, your dog might pick up on this and become more alert and protective. Alternatively, if you’re feeling relaxed and happy, your pet might become more playful and affectionate. But it’s not just our pets that can mirror our emotions and behaviors. Observing wild animals in their natural habitats can also teach us about ourselves. For example, a wolf pack’s social hierarchy can show us the importance of leadership and teamwork, while the solitary nature of certain big cats can teach us about the power of independence and selfreliance. Ultimately, animals can teach us about ourselves in ways that we might not have even considered. By observing their behaviors and interactions, we can gain valuable insights into our own emotions and behaviors.

For example, incorporating animals into mindfulness and meditation practices can help us stay present and focused. Walking a dog, for example, can be a form of moving meditation, as we focus on our breath and the sensation of walking while also being present with our furry companion. Furthermore, animals can be used as symbols in different cultures to represent certain qualities or characteristics. In Hinduism, for example, the elephant represents wisdom and strength, while the cow represents motherhood and nurturing. By exploring these cultural symbols, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.

WAYS TO INCORPORATE ANIMALS INTO DAILY LIFE FOR REFLECTION AND GROWTH If you’re interested in incorporating animals into your own personal growth and self-discovery practices, there are plenty of ways to do so. Here are just a few ideas:

Have you noticed anything special as you walked into any store lately? Perhaps some goblins on the shelves, witches flying overhead, or a mechanical mummy that scares you as you walk in? It’s about that time, isn’t it? Halloween is just around the corner.

hile once only a holiday enjoyed by youngsters, it now seems that people of all ages participate in the festivities, and many dogs also want to join in the celebration!

There are many costumes on the market today, specifically designed for our dogs. Every year, designers become increasingly creative. I’ve seen postmen costumes, wizards, cowboys, lions, bears, Dracula, and my personal favorite – a dog dressed in garb from the 80’s, complete with a stuffed animal boom box! Who doesn’t love the fashion from that era? This is a great holiday to get creative, too. If you enjoy baking, there are many pet-friendly recipes available. You can create dog treats shaped like mummies or ghosts, or even carob toppings shaped like spiders. Eoooww! When researching recipes, ingredients such as old-fashioned or unsweetened oatmeal, pure pumpkin puree, and peanut butter are all safe, as long as your dog doesn’t have allergies and the ingredients don’t have xylitol, sugar, or salt. If in doubt, check with your veterinarian. (Xylitol is a sweetener that is fatal if ingested by dogs). If you’re staying home with your pup, you can still dress them up for the holidays and take adorable pictures to treasure in years to come. While there is arguably nothing cuter than a pug dressed as a bumblebee or a Labrador dressed as a burglar, here are some tips to remember that will help make this holiday as enjoyable as possible!

If your dog is joining you for a walk throughout the neighborhood to check out the scary houses, the flashing lights, and the people dressed up for the occasion, be sure that your dog doesn’t get scared easily. This seems like common sense, but even the most even-keeled pup can become frightened and develop the strength (and speed) of a cheetah on a chase! Be sure to have your leash in hand and proper identification on your dog for the “just in case” moments. (I can attest that flashing lights can scare even the calmest dogs, so just a word of caution)! Also, watch your dog’s body language. The friendliest dog might not respond so nicely if a coven of witches surrounds them! While some might love any monster that lavishes them with attention, others might not find it quite as comical. Also, to collect as much candy as possible before the streetlights go on, some kids may run from house to house, and treats may accidentally spill out of their trick-or-treat bags. Make sure that your pooch doesn’t sneak some forbidden chocolate or sugar packets when you’re not looking. We know how sneaky our fur babies can be! Lastly, if you are staying home with your pup and they are helping you answer the door, remember that they might become suddenly protective due to the commotion. If that’s the case, there’s nothing wrong with closing your candy store early and letting your pup relax the rest of the night!

Overall, have a great time and be sure to take lots of pictures of your pooch in costume!
