Dr Ian McMahon
Dr Ian McMahon (1923-2012) was Head of History at Homerton from 1965 until 1988. During that time he consolidated history as a vigorous research-based discipline within the College's curriculum. He could expound on almost any subject, particularly the finer points of current American politics but also on theology, philosophy and educational history. A memorial lecture in honour of Dr McMahon will be given on Tuesday 20 November by Dr William Foster, College Fellow and Lecturer in History. The lecture will be followed by the Michaelmas Term Alumni Formal Hall. Read more.

Varsity Match at Twickenham, 6 December 2012Invitation from the Bursar
Having joined Homerton in July as the new Bursar, I was surprised to find my love and interest in rugby appeared to be well-known and often the first topic of conversation when meeting new people!
I started playing rugby (of the female variety) at University College London as an undergraduate and continued to play for another 14 years finishing at Richmond Rugby Club. For the past 7 years I have been Chair of the Rugby Football Union for Women which this year became fully integrated in the RFU. There were many achievements and highlights in that time including organising and hosting the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2010. I now represent women's and girls' rugby on the RFU Council and participate in a number of committees.
Now I admit I have never been to a Varsity Match! However, I will be there this year proudly supporting the Light Blues. I would really like to meet some of our Alumni there so if you decide to take up the exciting offer or come under your own steam, please let me know and hopefully we can meet up. I am now off to buy my Light Blue scarf to annoy my Oxford student daughter! Deborah Griffin OBE
The Charter Campaign raised £100,500 in the FY 2011-12, bringing the total to date since the launch of the Campaign in March 2011 to £194,500. The College would like to thank all who supported the Campaign this year, allowing the College to increase financial assistance to students through scholarships and bursaries, to support creative endeavor and to provide additional support for our young researchers. A total of £76,000 was raised from the Telephone Campaign alone, whilst a number of pledges remain outstanding, this is a great acheivement. The participation rate has risen from below 1% at the start of the Campaign to over 5% of alumni having made a gift to Homerton. We are very grateful, not only for the donations, but also for the offers of support in other ways.
Careers Service - A Request
Over half the current undergraduates at Homerton College are actively engaged with the University's Careers Service. You may have used it yourself. The Service provides advice, information and guidance to all current students, whatever their career interests and abilities. With the current demanding employment market facing many of our students, the Careers Service is looking for your help and support, whatever career you're in. GradLink is their alumni database, containing contact details of over 1,200 willing volunteers who offer advice and information to current students by email or telephone. GradLinks usually get fewer than a dozen queries a year, so it isn't too demanding on your time. If you'd like to offer advice and information to current students, from all Colleges, wanting to know about your career, employer, and the highs and lows of your own career trajectory, please join GradLink.
Similarly, if you can offer any work placements, internships or are looking to recruit a graduate full time, please let the Careers Service know. Free of charge, they will advertise your vacancy to targeted groups of students. Simply enter details of your organisation and vacancy here.

The Australian Art Orchestra - Crossing Roper Bar
A visionary exploration of the music traditions of Australia's first people by the Australian Art Orchestra in collaboration with the Young Wägliak Group, traditional song men from Ngukurr, South East Arnhem Land in Australia's Northern Territory. They will be performing in Cambridge on Tuesday 13 November at both the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology and afterwards at Homerton College in the Mary Allen Auditorium at 4pm. Read more.
This term we welcome four new Junior Research Fellows:
Dr Amy Blakeway joins Homerton as a JRF in History following a year as the FulbrightRobertson Visiting Professor in British History at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. Dr Blakeway intends to work on the position of illegitimate aristocrats in sixteenth-century Scottish noble society and politics, focusing on the figure of James Hamilton, Duke of Chatelherault, Earl of Arran and Governor of Scotland (1519-75).
Mr Richard Brierley joins Homerton as a JRF in Physics. A theoretical physicist based at the Cavendish Labs, Richard's research will study the effects of strain on low temperature phase transitions of materials.
Dr Gerry Crossan, JRF in Biological and Medical Sciences, is working on the molecular basis of the human genetic disease Fanconi Anaemia, using mice to study the cellular and pathological consequences of certain genetic deficiencies.
Ms Lauren Waszek, JRF in Geophysics, is based in the Bullard Laboratories of the Earth Sciences Department. Following on from her PhD thesis on 'A body wave study of the seismic velocity and attenuation structures of Earth's inner core', her next project is to work on the outer core.

The Charter Choir's July tour to Alsace was a huge success. The performances were gratefully received, with impressive turnouts in both town and country venues. A second international tour to Croatia is planned for 2013. As well as Choral Evensong each Tuesday during term time, at 6.30pm in St John the Evangelist's Church, Hills Road, the Choir will be performing at Great St Mary's Church on 4 November, 6.307.30pm and at Choral Evensong at Ely Cathedral on 29 November, 5.30-6.30pm. Absolute Pandemonium is the current incarnation of Homerton's very own steel pan band. We have purchased some shiny new pans and would love to offer the chance for Pandemonium alumni to play them. We wil be organising a pans alumni event later in the year. Do get in touch!
