The Second Design Trend Is Maximalism Maximalism might sound overwhelming and cluttered, but the truth is that even the most maximally full room can still be calm and restful if the balance of the room is right.
A Few Basic Tips To Understand Maximalism: While maximalism embraces full surfaces and busy, detailed designs, it is by no means messy. A maximalist kitchen with a whole stack of unopened mail or plastic shopping bags visible stuffed next to the microwave isn’t maximalist, it’s just unkept. For maximalism to work as a design aesthetic, your house needs to be really neat.
Maximalism stretches across eras and styles. You can have a mid-century couch and coffee table, an old-fashioned bookcase that you’ve filled up with your favourite fiction and sci-fi novels, and a wall hung with every Victorian style botanical print you can get your hands on. Maximalism is about what you choose and how you colour in the canvas of your own home.

Thirdly, Embrace Optimistic Earthy Tones Once you have got your houseplants settled and you’ve unpacked all your favourite décor items onto every surface in your house, why not bring it all together with the calm optimism of a good earthy, grounding, colour scheme. If you live in the northern part of the country, find your inspiration in the winter veld, the golden orange of a highveld sunset or the dappled beauty of a kudu. If you are a coastal dweller, think of sandy beaches, driftwood and sun-bleached seashells. Optimistic earth tones don’t mean dark, muddy colours. The inspiration here is beige with a hint of blush. A quiet greyish purple, like the morning sky just before the sun peaks over the horizon. Sunlight on wheat ready for the harvest.

Planting the right thing for the season can have your garden blooming even before your neighbours start their spring cleaning. For many of us, winter means hibernation. Short days, frosty mornings, long naps, warm drinks…nothing about winter really invites you into the garden, does it? Now think about your neighbourhood – that one house that just seems to be ahead of the game each year. The key to a vibrant spring garden is putting in the work three months before. Simple as that.
Garden Like A Granny
So, this year, why not follow the granny garden route and see if this gives your garden the necessary head start, come spring? According to the “Keith Kirsten’s Complete Garden Manual for South Africa”, my granny’s favourite book, there is a lot of work that can (and should) be done in a garden over the winter months: May is the month in which you should be planting your lilies and treated tulip bulbs. It is also your last chance to plant irises to give them enough time to become established before the winter sets in. Once you have planted these bulbs and they start growing, water them once a month and provide ample multipurpose plant food. If you have dahlias in your garden, now is the time to prune them back and dig up the tubers. Store them in a cool dry place until September, when they go back in the ground. Bind up and support your sweet peas and give them ample water. These lovely little plants are some of the first to give you flowers in September. Let’s choose head start over hibernate this winter and see what we can achieve if we meticulously and fastidiously garden like a granny this July.
