Born and raised in Denison, Texas, Sullenberger pursued his childhood love of aviation at the United States Air Force Academy. In addition to his bachelor’s degree in psychology, he also has two master’s degrees, one in industrial psychology from Purdue University and one in public administration from the University of Northern Colorado. He also has an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Purdue University. Sullenberger served as a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force from 1975 to 1980. After serving in the Air Force, Sullenberger became an airline pilot with Pacific Southwest Airlines, later acquired by US Airways, until his retirement from commercial flying in March 2010. He was selected to perform accident investigation duties for the United States Air Force, and served as an Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) representative during a National Transportation Safety Board investigation. Additionally, Sullenberger served as a Local Air Safety Chairman for ALPA, and was a member of one of their national technical committees, where he contributed to the creation of a Federal Aviation Administration Advisory Circular. He was also instrumental in developing and implementing the Crew Resource Management course used by US Airways, and he has taught the course to hundreds of other airline crew members. After logging more than 20,000 hours of flight time Sullenberger became internationally renowned on January 15, 2009 when he and his crew safely guided US Airways Flight 1549 to an emergency water landing in New York City’s frigid Hudson River. The Airbus A320’s two engines had lost thrust following a bird strike. Sullenberger was ranked second in TIME’s “Top 100 Most Influential Heroes and Icons of 2009” and was awarded the French Legion of Honour. Sullenberger is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters and Making a Difference: Stories of Vision and Courage from America’s Leaders. Clint Eastwood directed the major motion picture about Sullenberger’s life, titled “Sully”, based on Highest Duty. He is an international lecturer and keynote speaker at educational institutions, corporations and non-profit organizations about the importance of aviation and patient safety, crisis management, life-long preparation, leadership and living a life of integrity.

Captain “Sully” Sullenberger has been dedicated to the pursuit of safety for his entire adult life. While he is best known for serving as Captain during what has been called the “Miracle on the Hudson,” Sullenberger is a safety expert, speaker, and author. He currently serves on the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Advisory Committee for Automation in Transportation. He still flies privately.

The Hall of Fame will celebrate and recognize inducted members through interactive and engaging exhibits and videos. Here, emerging leaders will meet industry giants to benefit from their wisdom as they walk through their life experiences.
JOIN THE LEADERS CIRCLE Our new home will launch The Leaders Circle, the most prestigious gathering of leaders in our industry. Leaders Circle members will gain access to exclusive activities to stay abreast of the latest business trends and to connect with other powerful influencers. As the organization of leaders, the Hall of Fame Leaders Circle will represent a hotbed for peer-to-peer discussion, a platform for conversation among inducted Members of the Hall of Fame, Future Leaders and our most generous donors.
TELLING OUR STORY TO THE WORLD A highlight of the Hall of Fame will be a world-class video documenting the history of our $110 billion industry and highlighting the great men and women who built it. As told through the eyes of our greatest contributors and industry leaders, it will share the inside stories of enduring excellence, innovation and creativity, and superior accomplishments. The video will debut online and serve as the definitive introduction to a fast-paced industry driven by a fascinating combination of style, workmanship and technology. The Hall of Fame will take the lead role in inviting consumers and industry newcomers alike to step inside a highly complex culture – richly personal and entrepreneurial, local yet fully global, as familiar as your own home.
OUR PLACE TO DISCOVER Visitors will explore the world of home fashion and design through our Discovery Center. Interactive areas will challenge and entertain adults and children with hands-on demonstrations, workshops, and experiential learning activities, and special events. Here, visitors will be able to explore the world of home fashion and designing your home.
OUR PLACE TO PRESERVE Nowhere is the U.S. is there a written history of our industry. The Hall of Fame is changing that by housing our growing collection of original documents, artifacts, books and oral histories. This is where we can piece together our voices and tell our unique story. Visitors will be able to experience our rich past through a series of permanent and temporary exhibits that will explore everything from woodworking shops in the 1800s to ancient Italian pottery and oriental rugs.

SELECTION PROCESS Inductees into the Hall of Fame are selected by a seven-member committee who meticulously search for the most outstanding leaders of our industry, based on four foundations: Enduring Excellence, Superior Accomplishments, Innovation and Creativity, and Philanthropic Generosity. The committee members spend hours researching and vetting the nominations before voting independently on a points-based system via a secure web-based ballot. The committee members are heads of companies and organizations, representing various aspects of our industry. The results are received by our accounting firm, Sharrard, McGee & Co., PA. The coveted Affie features a flame plated with 18kt. Gold, circled by a metal infinity band crafted of stainless steel and seated on a black marble base. Designed by Mark Tucker, III, a furniture designer and a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design, its beautiful design symbolizes the eternal nature of home design and the impact of the contributions to the industry made by each inductee of the Hall of Fame.

2019 INDUCTEE Jake Jabs
American Furniture Warehouse Jake Jabs, president and CEO of American Furniture Warehouse, is an entrepreneur who pioneered the high volume, big box home furnishings store, starting with one store in 1975 to become a top 20 retailer with 14 stores in Colorado, Arizona and Texas. As one of the largest privately held companies in Colorado, Mr. Jabs believes the keys to selling furniture are honesty, knowledge about the product and competitive pricing. His mantra, “Do It Right The First Time,” applies to buying it, marketing it, displaying it, selling it, delivering it and taking care of the customer. With a trucking fleet of more than 800 trucks – tractor trailers, box trucks and even trucks for customers to rent – white glove deliveries are made coast to coast. Mr. Jabs is a master of mixing entertainment and mass retailing, with a penchant for playing guitar for store customers and appearing with exotic animals in television commercials. A former Air Force officer, he focuses on hiring veterans, offers widespread incentive pay to employees, and spends a full day with each new hire to instill his passion for honesty, providing value and fully informing each customer with detailed product information tags. He has written two books, An American Tiger and Thriving in Tough Times. Mr. Jabs has contributed countless hours as a volunteer and hundreds of millions of dollars to many, many charities and schools. In Colorado, he is ranked as the fifth Top Corporate Philanthropists, exceeded only by large public companies. He believes in the power of education as a mentor and as a frequent lecturer for the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship at his alma mater, Montana State University where he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree, and for the University of Colorado Entrepreneurial Business School. His many industry, business and charitable honors include the National Home Furnishings Association Retailer of the Year, Furniture Today Retailer of the Year and Mentorship Award, Home Furnishings Association Trail Blazer Award, American Red Cross Community Heroism Award, Colorado Easter Seals Champion Award and induction into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame.

Clement “Clem” Lange, founder and chairman of the board of directors for Best Home Furnishings, built the domestic upholstery manufacturing company on the principal to build the best quality product at the most affordable price and to do it more efficiently than the competition. Today, with more than 2,400 styles and options in more than 700 fabrics and leathers, orders are completed in just five working days. Each day approximately 4,000 products are produced. With his brilliant self-taught engineering mind, Mr. Lange became a technology and efficiency leader. In the 1970s he computerized manufacturing operations, setting strict production standards and developing close vendor relationships – all before the term lean manufacturing was invented. In the 1990s, he implemented a new high-tech computer system to further shorten deliveries of its chairs, recliners, loveseats and sofas, swivel rockers and gliders, upholstered benches and occasional tables. Best Chairs began in 1962 as a modest five-person operation repairing furniture and truck seats in an old cannery building in Ferdinand, Ind. The family-owned business acquired several manufacturing operations and today employs 850 people at seven facilities, which produce custom upholstery furniture that is sold around the world. Committed to being environmentally responsible, the company embraces five pillars of success: USA built, speed, selection, quality and value. All three of his sons, lone daughter, and most of his nine grandchildren continue to work in the business. Mr. Lange is an avid collector and restorer of vintage automobiles, including being a seven-time finisher of the transcontinental Great Race for pre-1960 cars. Known for his high personal character, Mr. Lange and his wife, Mary C., have demonstrated great philanthropy in their communities. They were the lead donors for the creation of the Lange-Fuhs Cancer Treatment Center at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Ind., as well as the Tri-County YMCA in Ferdinand. Other groups that have benefited from their generosity include the Dubois County Community Foundation; the St. Henry, Holland and Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Departments; the St. Henry Catholic Church; and the Ferdinand, Holland and Huntingburg Parks.

Maitland-Smith Ltd. & Theodore Alexander, Inc. Paul Maitland-Smith, founder of Maitland-Smith Ltd. and Theodore Alexander, is a prolific curator of the eclectic design approach to elegant, high-end case goods, upholstery and accessories. As a London-based antiques dealer in the 1950s, he is rooted in the world of individual pieces and collected interiors. A brilliant engineer and manufacturer, he would introduce as many as 1,000 new products each market, some with patented designs. A natural product designer, marketer and entrepreneur, in the 70s Mr. Maitland-Smith started producing Chippendale chairs in Asia, selling container loads in London. He turned to reproduction furniture and decorative accessories in a blend of unique materials popular in the 18th Century: bronze, brass, porcelain, wrought iron, leather, shagreen, lacquer and eggshell. Ever obsessed with the details and mixed media, he lived across Southeast Asia to teach craftsmen how to produce his intricate designs. With a new found material – faux tortoise shell and malachite, mother of pearl, fossil stone, rattan and more – he moved to the next resource and trained new artisans to do intricate finishes, marquetry, inlay, reverse-painted glass, gilding and lost wax brass casting. A creative force, he founded Maitland-Smith in 1979 in Hong Kong to manufacture finely carved 18th Century furniture. He quickly expanded to source a perfectly curated line of home furnishings. In 1981, he built the company’s first manufacturing operation in the Philippines. He began showing at the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, partnered with Henredon Furniture and eventually sold Maitland-Smith to Masco. Constantly seeking out the most talented artisans and finest materials throughout the world, Mr. Maitland-Smith was among the first to venture to Vietnam, founding Theodore Alexander in 1996. Now with more than 5,000 employees, manufacturing operations total over 1 million sq. ft. Throughout his career, Mr. Maitland-Smith has believed in the importance of paying higher salaries to his work force. On-site health centers at production facilities ensure workers and their families have access to free medical care. He believes that personal amenities, such as shower facilities with clean towels, show his employees that their skills are valuable and appreciated.

Jim “Mack” McIngvale, founder and owner of Houston-area retailer Gallery Furniture, personally greets customers at the front door and is known for delighting them with a fun-filled shopping experience, which includes a monkey habitat, a tropical bird aviary and a 30,000-gallon aquarium. Mr. McIngvale and his wife, Linda, founded Gallery Furniture in 1981 with $5,000. Today, their three stores sell more furnishings per square foot than any other U.S. independent retailer. Customers, he believes, want three things: good prices, to be treated well and same-day delivery. In the face of online retailing, his stores focus on greater convenience as being all important in today’s business environment. For 30 years, Mr. McIngvale has starred in his own TV commercials becoming known as Mattress Mack and promising, “Gallery Furniture saves you money!” The Stores also participate in numerous sports promotions in order to relate to the community. In 1990, he attended a seminar by Dr. W. Edwards Deming and adopted the mantra that working together as a team is more important than individualism and that we all have a responsibility for the well-being of our communities. As a result, he regularly asks, as the litmus test for any business, “If we were to go out of business tomorrow, would our customers miss us?” Committed to being ingrained in the community, he has become a legend in philanthropy, calling himself half capitalist and half social worker. With a heart for children, neighborhoods, healthcare and disaster relief, the McIngvales began their annual Christmas giveaway of 30 households of furniture just two years after opening their first store. After Hurricane Harvey, Gallery Furniture housed and fed 500 people for several weeks, donating 10,000 mattresses and 20,000 pairs of shoes. The McIngvales have co-founded the Peace of Mind Foundation for those affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, funded St. Luke’s Mobile Stroke Unit, and a wide-range of other philanthropic efforts throughout the great Houston area for over 38 years. They furnish USO facilities around the world and teacher’s lounges in Houston, and have helped raise more than $12 million for victims of natural disasters.

For the second year, the Hall of Fame recognized a prestigious class of Future Leaders as promising rising stars at two gatherings with inducted members of the Hall of Fame and the Board of Directors. The dinners feature a guided discussion on leadership and innovation, led by Steve Pond, the founder of FurnitureToday. The small, intimate dinners among just five future leaders and five Hall of Fame inductees, provide inspiration and lifelong significance. At the same time, the inductees have shared that they are equally inspired by the creativity and enthusiasm of the next wave of leaders. Each Future Leader was selected for their leadership, personal growth, communications skills and their commitment to the greater home furnishings industry. A SNAP SHOT OF OUR INITIATIVES The Hall of Fame is the only organization in the industry that embraces the whole industry, no matter what your segment or role. Our permanent home will enable us to expand our 10 programs and initiatives.
1. HONORING OUR LEADERS The digital Tribute Wall will celebrate the contributions of the Hall of Fame inductees. To honor their leadership, we will be able to tell their stories and achievements through interactive touchscreen kiosks, videos, photographs, and oral histories.

5. THE HISTORY PROJECT There is no written history of the home furnishings industry in the United States. Now with a staff curator and historian, we are expanding our research and advancing our work to preserve our history.
6. ORAL HISTORY & BOOK PUBLISHING Told in the words of our leaders, our Oral Histories are published works that forever capture the industry’s history and growth. We have conducted more than 60 oral histories, posted on our website, available for research, and soon to become a part of the Listening Library.
7. THE HERITAGE PROJECT Through video interviews and photographs, we document the inside stories of the hands that have created and crafted the products.
8. A TREASURY OF MEMORABILIA 2. TELLING OUR STORY TO THE WORLD A highlight of the Hall of Fame will be a world-class video documenting the history of our $110 billion industry and highlighting the great men and women who built it. As told through the eyes of our greatest contributors and industry leaders, it will share the inside stories of enduring excellence, innovation and creativity, and superior accomplishments.
The Hall of Fame serves as a safe haven for our artifacts, patents, oral interviews, drawings, photographs, founder biographies, company histories, manufacturing techniques, and much more.
9. WALK OF FAME Established in 2001, the Walk of Fame recognizes the innovation, creativity, and excellence of the Hall of Fame inductees.
3. LEADERS CIRCLE ACTIVITIES The leaders circle will present new peer-to-peer activities for the most prestigious gathering of leaders in our industry, attended by Inducted Members of the Hall of Fame, Donors and Future Leaders.
10. TELL US YOUR STORY PROJECT Hitchhiking to market. Starting out on the factory floor. Everyone loves a good industry story. The Tell Us Your Story project captures the touching, humorous, and even quirky tales that make our industry so special.

4. THE LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE The Leadership Initiative focuses on creating a new class of leaders and innovation. Each year we identify 10 Future Leaders and facilitate probing discussions over dinners with inducted members of the Hall of Fame. Each fall, individuals whose leadership and outstanding achievements have contributed to the innovation and development of the U.S. home furnishings industry are inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame at the High Point Market. The Walk of Fame and Wall of Fame are permanent tributes to their rich legacies.
