October 15, 2023 Dear Guest: Tonight we gather to honor three extraordinary leaders with the industry’s highest honor, induction into the Hall of Fame. It is an evening to celebrate the contributions of Alexander Peykar, Nourison Home; Erie Sauder, Sauder Woodworking Co.; and Jeffrey Seaman, Rooms To Go. Each represents our theme tonight: Transform the Future. Each has placed a mark on the industry that has impacted the future world of home furnishings. Each has demonstrated significant innovation and their stories inspire us to achieve something greater than ourselves. The committee members spend hours researching and vetting the nominations before voting independently on a pointsbased system via a secure web-based ballot. The committee members are heads of companies and organizations, representing various aspects of our industry. The results are received by our accounting firm, Carr, Riggs & Ingram PLLC. 2023 INDUCTEE Alexander Peykar, co-chairman and co-founder of Nourison Home, expanded the horizons of the rug industry by popularizing the idea that the floor could serve as a key element for artful expression in a room. A lover of art with a natural talent for design, Peykar pioneered wholesale programs, thereby introducing consumers to original designs for affordable handwoven, hand-knotted and machine-made area rugs from India and China. Trained as an engineer, Mr. Peykar joined his brothers Paul and Edmond in launching Nourison in New York City in 1980 after building a strong foundation in the retail flooring segment. Armed with first-hand knowledge about the challenges of importing that retailers faced, their third brother, Steven, joined to help build a new wholesale source for quality, Persian-style rugs. In 1982, the company became the first U.S. importer to introduce hand-knotted, Oriental-style rugs from China. With his view of rugs as a fashion-forward work of art, the entry into the machine-made rug business opened the door for the industry to produce a new range of choices in the design, styles, size, color, yarns and price of area rugs. In 1988 a licensed collection inspired by the paintings of Vasily Kandinsky, was introduced at the Guggenheim Museum. Building on this success, partnerships were forged with celebrity designers including Calvin Klein, Kathy Ireland, Michael Amini, Barclay Butera, Christopher Guy and others. Based in Saddle Brook, N.J., the company now offers original designs and styles, ranging from traditional to contemporary for area rugs, custom rugs, and high-end wool broadloom carpet for hospitality and commercial projects as well as pillows, throw blankets and other decorative accessories. Born in Iran, Mr. Peykar is a strong believer in helping others by supporting health care organizations including Mount Sinai Hospital, North Shore University Hospital, and a health clinic in Bhadohi, India. He has served on the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame Board of Directors.

Alexander Peykar Nourison Home We realized that not every consumer can purchase $20,000 rugs. There are many that would be looking for $1,500 rugs. So, filling the voids was something that became part of my strategy, of being ahead, of filling empty spaces. No matter what, consumers are always looking for something that is different and we always give it to them on a continuous basis.

2023 INDUCTEE A new segment of the furniture industry was born in 1953, when Ohio cabinetmaker Erie J. Sauder received the first U.S. patent for a “knock-down” occasional table. Packed flat in a box, the table could be carried home by the consumer and assembled in minutes without tools, hardware or glue. The invention greatly changed the way furniture was manufactured and reduced the size of boxes required to package and ship furniture. It also led to a wave of readyto-assemble furnishings that could be marketed in mass merchant discount store chains and delivered inexpensively to the doorsteps of consumers.

If you just knocked it down and made it smaller in a box, I think I could sell more.’ So Erie went back and tinkered with the idea for a year or so, and came up with production methods and assembly methods. He showed the buyer the table, he loved it and, the ready-to-assemble furniture industry was born. – Kevin Sauder, Grandson of Erie Sauder

A self-made man with an eighth-grade education, Mr. Sauder started his woodworking business in 1934 in a barn behind his home in Archbold, Ohio. Originally a builder of custom cabinetry and church pews, he began crafting small occasional tables from leftover wood. In 1940, the workmanship of these tables inspired a traveling salesman to place an order for 25,000. Fueled by rising demand, the new business grew into one of the top five furniture producers in North America, despite two devastating fires in the early years. In addition to RTA furniture, Mr. Sauder also founded Sauder Manufacturing, a leading manufacturer of church furniture and for healthcare and institutional seating. Today, most Sauder Woodworking Co. furniture continues to be produced in Ohio using some of the most technologically advanced equipment in the world. The company’s facilities cover more than five million square feet globally, and its line features more than 70 ready-to-assemble collections, including entertainment, home office, bedroom and kitchen furniture, as well as assembled furniture marketed under the Progressive brand. A man of deep faith and giving spirit, Mr. Sauder in 1976 founded Sauder Village, a living history museum. An advocate for higher education, Sauder received honorary doctorates from Ohio State University, Defiance College and Northwest State Community College. He also has been recognized with the Ohio Governor’s Award.

2023 INDUCTEE Jeffrey Seaman, co-founder of Rooms To Go, made decorating fast and easy, by focusing on the concept to offer fully coordinated rooms for consumers looking to save time and money. Founded in 1990 in Orlando, the privately held company quickly grew through creative store design, energetic advertising and heavy investments in technology to streamline distribution. Known for his hands-on approach, Mr. Seaman is involved in all aspects of operations, from store design to product development, merchandising and marketing. When creating the concept for Rooms To Go, he studied broad retail trends in malls and shopping centers, focusing on smaller store brands with a curated product offering. Furnished room vignettes help consumers imagine how a room of furniture might look in their home. The new store format, placed in locations highly visible to drive-by traffic, energized the shopping experience by introducing walls of glass windows that created light, bright and airy spaces. Innovative product development has featured celebrity licenses developed with Cindy Crawford, Sofia Vergara, Drew and Jonathan Scott and others. As the fifth largest furniture retailer in the U.S., the chain includes Rooms To Go Kids, and Rooms To Go Patio. The company also has invested in upholstery and case goods manufacturing plants located in Mississippi and Mexico. Its more than 150 stores in 10 states and franchise units in Puerto Rico are supported by eight distribution centers. Rooms To Go has also been instrumental in the relaunch of Furniture.com, a search tool that enables consumers to browse across home furnishings retailers and brands. Rooms To Go has worked diligently to minimize its environmental footprint. A fully automated recycling program has prevented more than 600 million pounds of waste from entering landfills and natural lighting in warehouses and stores has reduced energy usage. A longtime supporter of causes in local communities, Mr. Seaman provides funding and furnishings to a wide range of furniture banks, disaster organizations, veterans’ groups and medical research initiatives.

Jeff Seaman Rooms To Go I think a lot of family members will relate to this: you don’t stop working when you leave work. You’re constantly talking about furniture. What you learn, really often, is after work when you’re in a family business. I’ve been married for 35 years. My wife said to me, “I don’t understand how you can talk about furniture all night when you’ve been talking about furniture all day.” And this is from the time that I was 22, working with my dad, until now, 62. I just love it!

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR INITIATIVES Welcome to the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, home to a $150 billion industry. Here you will discover a creative culture, full of imagination that is matched with a passion for functional living. It is our privilege to improve lives by furnishing homes around the world. It is our hope that the Hall of Fame will inspire the industry and everyone who visits to live life more fully surrounded by beauty in the place that each of us calls home. 1. HONORING OUR LEADERS The Hall of Fame Gallery focuses on the spirit of our leaders and their contributions to the American home furnishings industry. The beautiful Wall of Fame features 136 inducted Members of the Hall of Fame, with touchscreen kiosks offering a deeper dive into their lives. The Tribute Wall presents key innovations and developments in the industry.

2. LEADERS CIRCLE Hall of Fame activities bring together leaders of the industry through a variety of events in order to prompt discussion and exploration. Events include seminars, speakers, awards events, dinners and cocktail parties.

3. THE HISTORY PROJECT There is no written history of the home furnishings industry in the United States. Now, under the direction of our staff curator and historian, we are expanding our research and work to preserve our history. Through video interviews and photographs, we document the inside stories of the hands that have created and crafted the products.

4. ORAL HISTORY & BOOK PUBLISHING Told in the words of our leaders, our Oral Histories are published works that forever capture the industry’s history and growth. We have conducted more than 60 oral histories, posted on our website, available for research, and soon to become a part of the Listening Library.

HALL OF FAME LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE EDUCATION AT HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY Each February, The Hall of Fame Leadership Institute at High Point University challenges emerging leaders with intensive executive education fashioned after the Chief Executive Organization’s Harvard Program. In addition, we present a world-class speaker at the annual Induction Celebration in October.

6. PAUL BROYHILL FUTURE LEADERS AWARD The Leadership Initiative focuses on inspiring a new class of leaders and innovation. Each April we honor five emerging leaders as a Paul Broyhill Future Leader and facilitate interaction with inducted members of the Hall of Fame. 7. A TREASURY OF MEMORABILIA

The Hall of Fame serves as a safe haven for our artifacts, patents, oral interviews, drawing, photographs, founder biographies, company histories, manufacturing techniques, and much more.

The current Walk of Fame was established in 2001 and installed by ANDMORE in front of the entrance to Furniture Plaza. With the construction of our new building, this is being redesigned. Watch for the new plans to be announced next Spring. 9. TELL US YOUR STORY VIDEO PROJECT This is being taken to a new level with the opening next Spring of the self-contained video booth that will capture the touching, humorous and even quirky tales that make our industry so special. 10. TELLING OUR STORY TO THE WORLD: LAUNCHING 2024 Through the Tell Us Your Story Video Booth, the Hall of Fame will begin telling the inside stories of what it’s like to work in our industry. It’s greater purpose? Attracting the creative culture to our industry. 55

• The grand Presentation Staircase is limited only by your imagination: as an amphitheater, a stage, of for display of corporate messaging or even products. • Lighted Digital Banners form a canopy over the staircase, creating unmatched drama to match your logo or a theme of the meeting. • The Leaders Boardroom offers a full menu of microphones in the ceiling, online access and a large screen for telecommunications or presentations. In 1931, Bernard Castro started Castro Decorators in a second story loft in NYC with $400. This small custom drapery and upholstery shop would become Castro Convertibles, a business that Bernard and his wife Theresa , worked tirelessly to build into a manufacturer and retailer of sleeper sofas as we know them today, ultimately selling more than five million Castro Convertible sofas exclusively through their own 48 retail showrooms on the East Coast. Castro had three large upholstery plants, one in New Hyde Park, New York, one in Danbury, Connecticut, and one in Ocala, Florida, with a separate steel mechanism plant in New Hyde Park. From receiving the raw steel to delivering the finished product to the customer's home, Castro Convertibles was uniquely "vertical." Always creating, Mr. Castro was an inventor of many patented convertible mechanisms and gave consumers up to a million choices by offering 100 styles, thousands of fabrics and 10 bed sizes. In 1993, the retail and manufacturing operations were sold to Krause's Sofa Factory. An emigrant from Italy, he was a furniture apprentice who earned a degree in Interior Decoration from the New York Evening School of Industrial Art. Mr. Castro was involved in every aspect of product development, production, advertising and sales, demanding the utmost quality in every detail. Furniture was displayed with high-end accessories in room settings, to favorably compare it with designer stationary sofas. By highlighting the value of fashion-forward sofa beds and leading product innovation in the category, he created a specialty niche of chain stores for sofas by day that turned into beds for the night. Each showroom was designed to be a destination showplace, attracting people who visited to see the latest interior design trends. Mr. Castro was an advertising genius with exceptional foresight. He recognized the potential impact of television advertising when only two TV channels existed, airing a commercial featuring his four-year-old daughter, Bernadette, who demonstrated that a Castro Convertible was "so easy, even a child can do it." A hands-on leader and avid mentor, who often worked seven days a week, Mr. Castro believed in promoting from within and generously donated his time and resources. In 1963, he received the prestigious Horatio Alger Award. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a founding member of the Florida Council of 100, a member of the 23rd Street Association and active in the Ocala/Marion County Chamber of Commerce. A supporter of the Florida National Guard, he dedicated several hundred acres of his Ocala farm for a Special National Guard Drop Zone and was named an honorary Green Beret. Mr. Castro received an honorary doctorate from Mercy College. A member of the Knights of Malta and the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher, he was a founding member of the Columbus Citizens Foundation and was honored by numerous nonprofit organizations, including Boys Town of Italy and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, both of New York City. He was inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame in 2014.
