LIFESTYLE & LEISURE
EDITOR’S NOTE
Life on the Costa del Sol is a dream for most of the year but, for me, it’s around now, with the arrival of Semana Santa, that the season properly turns and the coast comes to life.
Outdoor living resumes with intent and the focus shifts to terraces, gardens and open-air spaces.
As we edge towards longer summer days, there is renewed appreciation for making the most of every sunlit hour, whether that’s a morning coffee in the gentle warmth or an unhurried evening around the table. Spring is the moment when outdoor living comes fully into its own.
It makes perfect sense, then, that the outdoors takes centre stage in this issue. As our Outdoor Living feature explores, today’s exterior spaces are being designed with the same level of thought and sophistication once reserved for interiors. They are no longer seasonal areas but fully realised extensions of the home. Our outdoor areas are places to relax, socialise, and live well.
Designers and leading brands are responding in kind. We are seeing warm teak, woven rope, soft architectural lines and modular seating used with style, comfort and practicality in mind. Outdoor kitchens are becoming social hubs in their own right, while portable lanterns and layered lighting ensure evenings outdoors can stretch comfortably long after sunset. The mood may be relaxed but the thinking behind it is anything but casual.
Also in this issue, you’ll notice a new addition within our lifestyle pages. We’re taking ‘supporting local’ to a new level and are now dedicating space to showcasing striking artwork by talented local artists - pieces that can act as a true finishing touch and a natural talking point in any room. If something catches your eye, simply email us at info@homeandlifestyle.es to make a purchase and the piece will be delivered directly to your door.
Across the wider design landscape, you’ll see colour is also making a confident return. While Scandinavian interiors remain undeniably appealing with their light, airy neutrals and softly uplifting palette, the growing influence of Japandi is bringing greater depth and warmth to contemporary spaces. Richer tones in deep browns, terracotta, muted greens, and natural wood finishes are popping up in textiles and wallpapers, adding contrast and visual interest. The direction was reinforced earlier this year at the major 2026 design fairs and the future of design is holistic, tactile and deeply connected to how we live. The boundary between inside and out continues to blur, and on this stretch of coast, the shift feels entirely natural.
Enjoy the issue,
Laura Wood, Editor

ART ELEVATES LIFE
From volume to board, canvas, and ceramics, her work explores memory, s pace, and colour through modular forms meant to live with you. Each piece is conceived as a living element, free to be placed, combined, and reimagined. Her practice blurs the boundary between object and painting, inviting art into everyday space. Through subtle variations of form and colour, her works evolve with their environment and those who inhabit it. Designed to be installed and reconfigured, each composition remains open and alive.
Outdoor living has become a seamless extension of the home where comfort, style, and functionality meet. Thoughtful designs use natural materials like teak, aluminium, rope, and ceramic to create furniture that is durable and inviting all year round. Outdoor kitchens combine practicality with elegance, while clever features like extendable tables, modular seating, and integrated heating, enhance every moment spent outside. Lighting completes the experience, from portable LED lamps and lanterns to sculptural fixtures that cast warm, layered glows. Together, terraces and gardens are transformed into sophisticated, relaxed spaces for dining, entertaining, and unwinding under the open sky.

ILLUMINATING DESIGN
Lighting is no longer just about illumination, it has become a pivotal element in shaping spaces, moods, and experiences. Today’s trends showcase a fascinating interplay between form, material, and functionality, where lamps act as practical tools and sculptural statements. Designers are exploring organic silhouettes, soft diffused glows, and carefully engineered reflectors to create atmospheres that feel both intimate and expansive. Suspended fixtures and chandeliers are increasingly treated as kinetic artworks, turning ceilings into canvases of light, while wall-mounted pieces combine architectural precision with expressive forms. Sustainability and versatility are also central. Lightweight materials, modular designs, and recyclable components allow lighting to adapt to evolving spaces without compromising aesthetics. Whether compact portable lamps or large-scale statement installations, contemporary lighting transforms interiors and exteriors alike, blurring the line between decoration and illumination and proving that light itself can be a medium of design.
Designed in 1971, the Panthella portable lamp distils the iconic vision of Verner Panton into a compact, versatile form. THE DETAIL IS IN THE SWITCHES
The owners of this renovated barn in Toulouse chose Corston for their switches, sockets and hardware throughout choosing Antique Brass in the living room and Bronze in the bedrooms. The property owners state, “People will normally look at a switch and think, ‘it’s simple’. But now, when people come here, they really look at the switches. The details make
a big difference. And because they’re timeless, if we change the decor in the house tomorrow, we don’t necessarily have to change them too. The fact that the building is old meant it was completely fine putting in switches that are a bit more traditional. They go completely with the style of the building.” Buy online at www.corston.eu

LIVING ROOM TRENDS THIS SPRING
This season, living rooms are embracing a balance of timeless elegance and contemporary flair, where modularity, sculptural forms, and comfort take centre stage. Designers are blending retro references with modern minimalism, creating furniture that feels both nostalgic and futuristic. Quilted cushions, bold geometric frames, and low-profile seating introduce urban sophistication, while rounded corners, curvaceous silhouettes, and natural textures add warmth and approachability. Modularity and adaptability are key trends: sofas and lounge chairs are increasingly configurable, suitable for indoor and outdoor spaces, and designed to support multiple arrangements from intimate two-seaters to expansive sectional compositions. Materials and finishes play a central role, with combinations of plush fabrics, leather, nubuck, wood, and metal detailing elevating both functionality and style. So this spring, create inviting spaces with furniture that is as much about visual impact as it is about creating sociable, comfortable, and adaptable environments for modern living.

GROUNDBREAKING CONSTRUCTION IN SOTOGRANDE
BY ATLAS GROUP
At the highest point of La Reserva in Sotogrande, construction is underway on Villa Edge, a contemporary, five-bedroom residence with uninterrupted panoramic views of the Mediterranean, capturing both early morning light and late afternoon sunsets.
The villa, developed by Krystal Developments and under construction by Atlas Group, is reflective of the growing appetite for technically ambitious, design-led homes in southern Spain. The location sets the framework for the architecture and its design prioritises light, orientation and connection to its surroundings. Rather than competing with the landscape, it emphasises openness and long sightlines. The rear façade is fully glazed, dissolving the boundary between inside and out, and opening onto expansive terraces and an enclosed private Mediterranean garden oasis. On arrival, a custom-designed gate leads to a covered carport and a fivecar garage that has been conceived as a showroom and entertainment area. So much more than just a service area. Combined with innovative LED lighting, the garage becomes an integrated part of the architectural narrative rather than a secondary space. The entrance sequence continues this theme. A suspended three-metre stretch of glass, forming part of the swimming pool, allows daylight to penetrate the core of the home. Beyond a substantial pivot door, circulation centres around a staircase suspended by steel superyacht cables from the roof structure. The staircase functions as an engineering statement and sculptural element, reinforcing the home’s individual theme and personality.
Across its layout, Villa Edge reflects lifestyle and prioritises its purpose as a family home. The lower ground floor includes a private cinema room, fully-equipped gym and a sauna with the panoramic Med view. A bodega sits under the stairs as a design feature. The ground floor has two bedroom suites, the kitchen, dining room and lounge. The doors open nine metres onto the front terrace, pool and family firepit, with a fully enclosed terrace and garden surrounded by Andalucian rocks to the rear. A further three suites, all with panoramic views, are on the first floor. A substantial roof terrace with bar, firepit and swim spa extends the living space upward, to socialise or see the spectacular sunsets. Travel to all floors is in the fully glazed lift, giving incredible views from each floor. It’s the only property in the area with this design feature. Villa Edge embraces technology and sustainability, with photovoltaic panels providing energy and a full domotic LED suite reducing consumption. The heating is via energy efficient heatpumps. Combined, the project has a far greater reduced energy footprint. The surrounding landscape is being designed and delivered by KEW Gardens and Pools, with a scheme that responds directly to Sotogrande’s coastal climate and the property’s desire for privacy.
Mike Gregory, Director General of Atlas Group, sees the project as “indicative of a broader shift in high-end residential construction. Our focus with Villa Edge is on structural integrity, efficient execution, and delivering a home that responds to its setting. It’s about precision as much as design.”
A THOUGHTFUL START TO THE 2026 DESIGN CALENDAR
From Paris to Stockholm and Madrid, the first design fairs of 2026 are signalling a shared interest in considered craftmanship and a depth to design. Here’s what’s setting the tone.
The Mood in Paris
The international design world gathered in Paris under the theme Past Reveals Future for the first major design fair of the year. For five days, Maison&Objet delivered a confident message of depth. 2026 is all about heritage, craftsmanship and materials with a story to tell.
Designers stepped away from grand gestures and embraced crafted furniture and finishes designed to age gracefully. Stone, clay, straw marquetry and hand-worked metals appeared throughout the halls, reinterpreted with a contemporary twist to keep them fresh rather than nostalgic.
Limited-edition lighting, sculptural seating and artisanal objects married art and function. These were not statement pieces designed to dominate a space, but considered forms chosen for their emotional pull as much as their aesthetic value. Texture was also a key element, with bouclé and heavy linens balanced with smooth plaster, polished timber and softened metals, creating warm interiors that felt inviting and lived in.
Maison&Objet 2026 turned away from trends and towards authenticity. The focus was on fewer well-chosen pieces, materials that respond beautifully to light, and interiors that feel collected over time rather than assembled at speed. It showed that the most enduring interiors are designed to be lived in, and not just displayed.
The Evolution of Nordic Design
Often more understated than its continental counterparts, Stockholm Design Week has been steadily growing in influence.
Rather than a single central fair, the week unfolded across showrooms, galleries, studios and satellite exhibitions throughout the city, creating an immersive, design-led experience. There was a strong focus on sustainability, circular design, natural materials and innovation rooted in function.
Scandinavian brands seem to still be at the forefront of responsible production and longevity, while emerging designers are using the platform to explore new material applications, modular living and human-centred design. Stockholm Design Week is less about spectacle and more about intelligent ideas, a tone that feels very of-the-moment.
The Heart of the Home in Madrid
In Madrid, Intergift offered a different but equally valuable perspective. The fair brought together Spanish and international brands across homeware, décor, textiles, gifting and lifestyle, making it a useful barometer for what will filter into retail and interior projects later in the year.
Expect approachable luxury, decorative warmth, artisanal influences and commercially strong collections designed to translate well from showroom to home. It was a subtle reminder that good design can slot beautifully into everyday living.
Design-wise, it’s been a promising start to 2026. Across Paris, Stockholm and Madrid, there has been a move away from fast design towards pieces with soul, purpose and longevity. Craft is back at the centre, materials matter, and homes are here to be enjoyed.

LILY OF THE VALLEY
A DIFFERENT SIDE OF SAINT-TROPEZ
Just beyond the buzz of Saint-Tropez, Lily of the Valley rewrites what a Côte d’Azur escape can look like. This is still the South of France with its sun-warmed terraces, impeccable design, beautifully dressed tables and discreet, polished service, but it’s also a whole lot calmer.
As we become more aware of how sleep, nutrition, movement and stress shape our long-term health, wellness holidays are no longer niche. There’s a big interest in experiences that offer pleasure but more than indulgence alone, and Lily of the Valley speaks to a growing collective of travellers who want to return home feeling tangibly better than when they left.
Set above Gigaro Beach in La Croix-Valmer, the hotel is surrounded by protected natural landscape, giving it a sense of seclusion. The architecture and interiors, conceived by Philippe Starck, are striking rather than showy, in a palette that mirrors the surrounding hills and sea. Almost every space
opens outward, whether through terraces, balconies or generous windows, reinforcing a constant connection to nature. It’s luxurious, but with a relaxed sophistication that puts anyone at ease.
The Lily of the Valley Method
At the heart of the hotel is the Lily of the Valley Method, an integrated approach to wellbeing that supports specific goals while remaining realistic and enjoyable. Four core programmes are offered throughout the year: Weight Loss, Sport, Detox, and Better Aging, all focused around personalisation, expert guidance, and ultimately, sustainable habits.
Nutrition plays a central role. Developed in collaboration with renowned nutritionist Jacques Fricker, the menus focus on low-calorie, nutrient-rich dishes created with exceptional produce and serious culinary skill. The result is beautifully presented, flavourful meals that are satisfying and hard
to believe they’re 100 per cent good for you. Guests following weight-loss programmes can even enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, a small but telling detail that underscores the hotel’s balanced, human approach.
Wellness also has its place and therapists shape a treatment programme that reflects individual needs, whether that’s boosting energy, supporting recovery, improving sleep or addressing specific physical concerns. Bespoke treatments are delivered in light-filled rooms that open onto nature, reinforcing that sense of nurture.
Guests can also choose from indoor and outdoor training sessions, with options ranging from gentle mobility work and yoga to high-intensity training and endurance-focused workouts. Of course, the setting elevates the experience. It’s hard to resist a coastal trail run at sunrise or strength training overlooking the sea.
The Take-Home Feeling
Lily of the Valley masterfully integrates wellness into a holiday setting. You can easily spend the morning in training and treatments, and then enjoy a leisurely lunch, read by the pool, and head out in the late afternoon to explore nearby beaches or villages.
During your time here, you’ll find you’re sleeping better, your body feels lighter, and meals leave you energised rather than sluggish. You’re still very much enjoying life on the Riviera but you’re also returning home with a clearer sense of how you want to live, eat and move going forward.
That’s what a wellness holiday at Lily of the Valley is all about, and it does it beautifully.

RIO REAL IS THE REAL DEAL
BY DR GARRY HENDERSON
Back in the 1950s, Marbella became known for its glitz and glamour and attracted many of the world’s rich and famous who loved being in the spotlight. Others, like Scottish born Hollywood actress Deborah Kerr and her screenwriter husband, Peter Viertel, preferred the tranquillity of the hilltop Río Real Golf development, one of the most peaceful estates in Marbella. They settled here in the late ‘60s, away from the paparazzi, and would often entertain visiting movie stars and celebrities, establishing Marbella as a more exclusive place for stars from around the world. In recognition, Marbella town hall named Calle Deborah Kerr/Peter Viertel after them in 2007.
The street is adjacent to Río Real Golf & Hotel, designed in 1965 by Javier Arana, considered by many as the finest of Spanish golf architects. Spanish for “Royal River”, the course is named after the river which runs through it, before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. It is an integral part of the course and a feature on many holes. Take hole number one, a relatively short one at 307m from the white tees. It’s a classic example of a risk/reward hole where the golfer has a choice of playing safe by aiming to the right of a large tree in the middle of the
fairway, or aiming left of the tree for a longer carry over Río Real. The brave and talented will then be rewarded with a short iron into the green and a birdie chance. The foolish and less talented will have a watery grave and will wish they had gone right.
Hole number four is 392m long and is ranked the fifth toughest of the 18 holes. It is, in my opinion, the signature hole. A dog leg right to left ends with the green just short of the beach and sea. There are no two holes the same on this classic course with many species of trees lining some narrow fairways.
A mark of a truly memorable course is that even if one falls victim to the narrow trees or Río Real itself, I guarantee each golfer will leave with a smile and good memories. If you are disappointed by your performance, you can always take a lesson at the excellent golf academy which features state-of-the-art 3D Biomechanics Analysis.
If you are visiting the Costa del Sol, or if you live here, make sure to add this wonderful course to your must-play checklist.

DOES GROUNDING REALLY HAVE BENEFITS?
BY RACHEL GARROD
Can a barefoot walk along the beach do more for your health than you think? The Earth contains an immense supply of free, negatively charged electrons on its surface. When we are in direct contact with the ground by walking barefoot on grass, sand or stone, or by using a grounding mat or sheet, it is thought that these electrons can flow into the body.
Proponents of “earthing” or “grounding” as this practice is called, believe these electrons act as antioxidants to help neutralise positively charged free radicals, the molecules that contribute to inflammation and damage. Since literally hundreds of illnesses are thought to have a chronic inflammatory cause, being able to “mop up” these free radicals by grounding may have profound effects on health.
In fact, the Earthing Institute claims that grounding has benefits such as improved sleep, reduced stress and muscle pain, increased vitality and blood flow, improved hormonal balance, and reduction in menopause or menstrual symptoms.
However, critics argue that the benefits of grounding are in unrelated to the passage of electrons. They believe the flow of large numbers of electrons into the body is not possible since human skin acts as a barrier and the idea that humans are “electron deficient” lacks any scientific basis. Many free radicals are also negatively charged and could not be corrected by electrons. Scientists tend to dismiss claims of Grounding, stating that any benefits observed may be because of a placebo effect, or, in the case of walking barefoot outside, other factors such as increased Vitamin D. However, in 2025, Hyun-Jung Park and colleagues published a randomised, double-blind placebo study showing that earthing mats reduced stress, insomnia severity, and daytime sleepiness. In this study earthing was achieved by using a sheet connected to a grounding port for six hours per day or an identical (but nongrounded) sheet. This rules out the possibility of a placebo effect as the participants (and researchers) were unaware of which was the real treatment. And since there were no changes in outside activities, the benefits cannot have come from increased walking or sun exposure.
As for me, I won’t be rushing out to buy a grounding mat, although I might try one if I had significant insomnia, but with the warmer weather, I will be slipping off my shoes and making a conscious effort to go barefoot more often, always making sure to watch where I step, of course.

For years, an osteoporosis diagnosis often felt like a one-way road. Now, specialists at Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella say that picture is changing and, with the right approach, bone health can improve. Dr Nerea Costas Torrijo, head of Rheumatology, emphasises that early detection is key in this often “silent” condition, which many patients only discover after a fragility fracture. Today’s treatments can rebuild bone density and strength, significantly lowering future risk.
At Quirónsalud Marbella, an integrated model of densitometry, personalised therapy, nutrition, and structured exercise is helping to change outcomes. With menopause and lifestyle factors central to risk, the focus is firmly on early action, supporting patients to maintain bone strength, mobility, and quality of life for longer. www.quironsalud.com/marbella

What exactly is the Certificate of No Urban Planning Infringement?
Put simply, this certificate is issued by the local town hall where the property is located, and confirms that a property is not currently subject to any urban planning investigations or disciplinary proceedings. It offers reassurance that, at the time of issue, there are no open cases relating to illegal building works or breaches of planning regulations. While content can vary slightly by municipality, it typically includes the property’s identification details, the issuing authority, the date of issue and official validation.
Who applies for it?
The current owner of the property applies directly to the relevant local council. As part of the conveyancing process, your lawyer will usually request this certificate and review it alongside other key documentation. Is it the same as a First Occupancy Licence?
No. The certificate does not legalise unlicensed construction and does not grant permission to occupy the property. Both documents serve different purposes and should be reviewed together.
When is it most important?
It is particularly advisable when purchasing a resale property. The certificate helps verify that past extensions, alterations or building works have not resulted in unresolved planning issues; a common cause of costly legal problems after completion.
How long is it valid?
The certificate reflects the planning status at the moment it is issued. In practice, it is usually considered valid for a few months, making it suitable for use within a specific transaction timeframe.
Why it matters
The Certificate of No Urban Planning Infringement builds confidence in a purchase and helps prevent future disputes, fines or restrictions on selling. It is an important piece of the due diligence puzzle.
