Welcome to a brand new year, and what a talking point we’ve been handed already. At the end of last year, Pantone named its Colour of the Year for 2026 and so far, it’s proving to be a bit divisive. Cloud Dancer is a subtle shade of white and, depending on who you ask, it’s either wonderfully grounding, or spectacularly dull. Critics have labelled it “tone deaf” and “boring”, but Pantone describes it as billowy and balanced, and I honestly can’t help but agree. Cloud Dancer is one of these quietly confident neutrals that designers reach for instinctively. It’s the ideal canvas for layering texture and tone, and it works like an absolute dream in Mediterranean homes where light and natural materials form an important part of the architecture and design. Its subtlety lets other elements shine through and, although it may be understated, it definitely is not directionless. Pantone says Cloud Dancer reflects a collective craving for less noise and more simplicity. Notably, it’s also a colour that acknowledges the moment we’re in and coincides with the end of a nineyear moon cycle. If you’re into Feng Shui, you’ll know this signals the closing of one energetic chapter and the beginning of another. So, now is a time to release what hasn’t served us and make space, literally and symbolically, for what might. It’s no coincidence many of us feel drawn to declutter and rethink the way we live. The soft, weightlessness of Cloud Dancer encourages interiors that feel calmer, offering a neutral foundation from which to create new layers, textures and ideas. Personally, I’m stepping into 2026 feeling hopeful and ready for change. A fresh palette, a shift in energy and a need for more meaningful living feels like the perfect note to begin the year on. In this issue, you’ll find design and interiors that share that mindset with spaces shaped by thoughtful choices rather than excess. Design in 2026 feels less about statements and more about intention to build homes that support the way we truly want to live. Enjoy this issue and here’s to a calm and happy 2026. It’s a home that proves the studio’s versatility and ability to master multiple style directions in a single, cohesive narrative. Here, contemporary architectural lines form the backdrop for confident Art Deco and retro-inspired details, with a colour palette that sets the tone from the moment you step inside: deep aubergine, warm caramel and olive green build a rich, moody atmosphere that feels very cosmopolitan and deeply comfortable. Living spaces with sculptural presence In the main lounge, double-height ceilings frame views across the landscape, while furnishings introduce personality and movement. Even after 25 years of living on the Costa del Sol, the weather always surprises me in the winter. Fresh in the mornings, lovely warm sunshine in the middle of the day and, in the evening, there’s a call for a lit fire, blanket, and a hot soup. Here’s the recipe for my all time favourite, leek and potato, served with a hunk of delicious beer bread. BY HELLE BARLEBO

Winter Soup INGREDIENTS (serves four) 2 leeks (finely chopped) 500g potatoes (peeled and finely chopped) 1 large onion 2 cloves of garlic (sliced) 2 dl. dry white wine ½ litre whole cream 1 litre homemade beef stock 1 shot of good olive oil 25g butter 1 whole dried chilli 2 bay leaves 250g bacon (from the butcher) 2 teaspoons Pink Himalayan salt 10 pink rose peppercorns Fresh oregano and Timian to taste A pinch of chilli flakes for decoration

Heat the butter and olive oil in a big pot at a medium-high temperature. 2. Add garlic, chopped onions, and all the spices, and saute the onions until transparent. 3. Add the white wine and reduce (boil down) to half the volume of liquid. 4. Add the finely chopped leeks, potatoes, beef stock and cream, and simmer until the vegetables are tender. 5. Once cooked, remove the bay leaves and chilli, and use a hand blender to make the soup soft and creamy. Season with salt and pepper if needed. 6. Meanwhile, fry the bacon slices in the oven at 200 degrees until crispy, and pour the leftover fat into the soup for more flavour. 7. Serve topped with finely chopped leek greens, chilli flakes and crispy bacon, and enjoy with some home-baked beer bread.

Delicious Beer Bread INGREDIENTS Makes 16 buns or 3 baguettes 25g fresh yeast 1½ teaspoon Pink Himalayan salt 2½ dl tablespoon cane sugar or raw honey 2½ dl beer 2½ dl water 75ml olive oil 250g durum flour 500g wheat flour Our favourite mix is 1dl pine nuts and a cup of chopped sundried tomatoes

1. Mix the yeast, salt, and cane sugar in a large bowl, add lukewarm water, and stir with a big wooden spoon, together with the beer and olive oil. 2. Add one or two of your favourite seeds or greens into the mass. Some examples include pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, chia seeds or chilli flakes, and some chopped sundried tomatoes, olives, or grated cheese to taste. 3. Mix the two types of flour together and add them in the mass a bit at a time while stirring gently. 4. The dough will be sticky when it’s all mixed together. Cover with transparent film and a kitchen towel and leave at room temperature for 1½ hours or overnight in the fridge. Please note: The dough rises a lot so make sure your bowl is at least three times bigger than the dough. 5. Prior to baking, preheat an oven to 200 degrees and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. 6. Make each bun using two tablespoons of dough. The dough is sticky so dip the spoons in a glass of water in between each bun. 7. Bake for around 18 minutes, or until golden and hollow when you knock the base of the bread. Golf on the Costa del Sol in 2025 came to a close with the Spanish women’s open at the Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf, the final event in the Ladies European Tour. Here’s a mini guide to what you need to know about the event. THE VENUE Established in 1987, the original 18th century house was converted into the club’s distinctive clubhouse. The original layout was designed by Finnish architect Kosti Kuronen and the course was then redesigned in 2007 by honorary member, and famous Spanish golfer, Miguel Ángel Jiménez. The course is situated roughly 7km north-west of Málaga airport as the crow flies. At this off-peak time of year there are about 15 to 25 flights an hour which can be seen, and certainly heard, over the course. In 2017 King Felipe VI granted the title of “Royal Club.” NOTABLES IN THE FIELD Carlota Ciganda is an amazing talent and has already won eight titles on the Ladies European Tour and three times on the LPGA tour. She also sank the winning putt for Team Europe to enable them to retain the Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesin in Casares in 2023. Paula Martín Sampedro, at only 20 years of age, is a rising talent and one to watch in the future. 138

She currently has a scholarship at Stanford University in California and has won numerous amateur team and individual titles already. In this year’s Women’s British Open at Royal Porthcawl, an extremely challenging course, she tied for eighth place. THE TOURNAMENT There was a lot to play for at the season ending event. The top 10 in the order of merit on the Ladies European Tour (LET) can travel to Q-School for the LPGA in the United States, later in the week. Also at stake was the need to score well to retain your LET playing card. Early rounds saw a course record of 63 from Thai golfer Trichat Cheenglab. Golf is, at every level, a very humbling game - especially on Sunday, when many short putts were missed, entirely due to pressure. Lee Trevino once said, “Putts get real difficult the day they hand out the money.” At the close of play, the winner was French golfer Nastasia Nadaud at -16. The top Spaniard was Andrea Revuelta, an amateur, at -8. Carlota Ciganda tied with her fellow Spaniard Azhara Muñoz at -7. The order of merit for the year was won by Shannon Tan, who became the first player from Singapore to win the crown.

November may be Lung Cancer Awareness Month, but a friend reminded me of it just as we were heading into December and the festive season, and it struck me that I hadn’t thought about lung cancer anywhere near as much as I should have. Perhaps that sounds strange but it’s human nature: when something feels distant, we quietly file it away. The trouble is, when it comes to our health, out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind. But, simply put, if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer. In 2022, around 2.5 million people were diagnosed, and up to 20 per cent of those cases were in non-smokers. So, as we step into a new year, and a time when many of us reassess our habits and health, here are a few other things worth knowing about lung cancer: • Beyond smoking, several factors increase our susceptibility. Where we live matters: urban areas and highly polluted environments correlate with higher lung-cancer rates. • Indoor pollution also plays a role; open-fire cooking or wood-burning heaters are associated with a 70 per cent higher incidence than cleaner methods. • Our workplaces and wider environments can contribute too. Exposure to radon gas, industrial chemicals, and air pollutants all add risk. Asbestos, thankfully now largely removed from buildings, is a well-known cause of mesothelioma, a specific and aggressive form of lung cancer. • Emerging research also points toward microplastics. Tiny airborne

plastic particles may trigger malignant changes in lung cells and chronic inflammation (B. Ernhofer et al., Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2025). Some studies have even found higher concentrations of microplastics in cancerous lung tissue compared to healthy tissue. All of this can feel overwhelming, but there are steps we can take. Smokers should stop if they can. Vaping is less harmful though still not risk-free. People with lung conditions are already advised to check air pollution levels on weather apps and to limit outdoor exposure when levels are high. Reducing microplastic exposure is also a good habit to get into. You should avoid plastic utensils during cooking and never microwave food in plastic containers; when heated, plastics shed microparticles that can be absorbed in food and ultimately circulate through the bloodstream. Everything in our blood passes through the lungs. Finally, if you’re concerned about lung cancer or if you’re at higher risk, consider screening. The evidence is now clear: for individuals aged 50–80 with a 20 pack-year smoking history (current smokers or those who quit within the past 15 years), low-dose CT scanning detects lung cancer earlier and saves lives. Whether you’re refreshing a holiday home or breathing new life into a forgotten townhouse in the heart of Marbella, renovation work is part of the property journey for many international homeowners in Spain. But when it comes to tax, one question continues to cause confusion: Can renovation work ever be exempt from VAT (IVA) in Spain? The answer is yes, but only in very specific circumstances. Spanish VAT law (Article 20.1.22.b of the LIVA), along with recent court rulings, draws a clear boundary between what is considered cosmetic refurbishments and what is reconstruction. Only the latter may qualify for a VAT exemption. What really counts as “renovation” under Spanish law? To be considered VAT exempt, two requirements must be met at the same time. One relates to the nature of the work, and the other to its scale. 1. Qualitative requirement: it must be reconstruction More than 50 per cent of the total project cost must go toward structural work. This means reinforcing foundations, stabilising facades, replacing beams, repairing roofs and addressing issues that affect the building’s integrity. 2. Quantitative requirement: the investment must be significant The total cost of the works must exceed 25 per cent of the purchase price (if bought within the last two years) or, if not, 25 per cent of the building’s market value prior to works, excluding the land. This ensures exemptions are 146

reserved for genuinely transformative projects, not routine refurbishments. When VAT exemption does not apply Minor upgrades, repairs and decorative improvements, no matter how beautiful or expensive, do not qualify. Unless your project fundamentally strengthens the structure and meets the 25 per cent cost threshold, VAT will be charged as in any standard renovation. In short If the project deeply reinforces the building’s structure and represents a significant proportion of its value, it will likely be exempt from VAT. If not, IVA is unavoidable.
