EDITOR’S
As another year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on what an inspiring year 2025 has been for design, and for Home & Lifestyle Magazine.
On a personal note, we continued our partnership with Feria Hábitat València, a highlight on the European design calendar and a proud moment for our team, and we marked our milestone 100th issue in autumn, reminding us how far we’ve come and how much the design landscape has evolved since our early days.
From the quiet luxury of earthy warm neutrals sitting warmly next to textured fibres and burnished metals, bringing softness and energy to our homes, to the understated return of colour and pattern, interiors in 2025 have felt more expressive. Looking ahead to 2026, design is moving towards homes that reflect who we are and the way we live. Comfort, craftsmanship and connection are the new pillars of luxury, prioritising wellbeing and sustainability without losing an ounce of beauty.
Curated comfort, as I like to call it, is all about design with personality, where natural materials and layers of texture create spaces that feel lived-in and loved. It’s a move away from showhome perfection towards homes that tell stories. And, with that, we’re starting to own colour again, including bolder shades and confident accents that help us make our mark and express our individuality.
Inside this issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, you’ll find inspiration for creating spaces that feel gorgeously stylish yet soulful, to bring depth and character into your home this winter. From sculptural lighting and statement walls to the art of ambient warmth and the best dressed festive tablescapes. And because life here on the coast means outdoor living never really ends, we look at how to bring that same sense of comfort outside too.
As we turn the page on another year, I’ll take this opportunity on behalf of all of us, to wish you a happy winter and joyous festive season filled with warmth, comfort, and style.
Have a good one and we’ll see you in 2026.

LIVING ROOMS SOOTHING
These days a living room is a canvas for comfort, style, and personal expression. While seating often comes in soothing neutrals like white, beige, or grey, spacious rooms can be effortlessly enlivened with a vibrant pop of colour. Pouffes are perfect for this: versatile as footrests, occasional tables, or extra seating, they bring function and playful energy to the space. Side tables with built-in storage cleverly combine practicality with style, while natural materials like wood and woven fibres imbue the room with warmth, texture, and a serene, organic ambiance. By thoughtfully layering modular sofas, sculptural chairs, and well-chosen accents, any living room can become a harmonious, inviting retreat that delights the senses.
Le Mura, designed by Mario Bellini for Tacchini, transcends the notion of a simple sofa. It is a visionary modular system and a manifesto of 1970s radical design, seamlessly uniting elements of varied shapes and sizes into endlessly imaginative configurations. Tacchini is available through Heidi Gubbins in Urb. Marbella Real (www.heidigubbins.com).

FABRICS FANTASTIC
Fabrics have the power to completely transform a living space, turning ordinary rooms into areas of style and personality and adding a tactile cosiness. From curtains that frame windows with elegance to upholstered chairs and sofas that invite comfort, the right textiles can make all the difference. Today, bold patterns and geometric prints are taking centre stage, creating striking focal points that draw the eye and define a room’s character. Whether it’s a statement armchair reupholstered in a vibrant design, velvet cushions in deep rich hues, or dramatic floor-to-ceiling drapes that set the tone for the space, carefully chosen fabrics allow homeowners and designers alike to blend functionality with artistry, giving interiors a refreshed, sophisticated, and visually dynamic look.
Top Left Luminescence is an elegant, geometric collection featuring interlocking and overlapping rounded forms woven in luxurious jacquards. WALLS WITH PERSONALITY
Before you even step inside a home, its walls can make a statement. Outdoor wallcoverings are increasingly becoming an artistic extension of the house, combining texture, emotion, and visual impact to create an immediate sense of personality. The newest wallcoverings are tactile and emotive, inviting touch and evoking feeling, and while botanicals continue to hold sway, geometric prints are enjoying a stylish resurgence. Natural, earthy tones imbue interiors with a moody, emotive atmosphere while maintaining a sense of connection to the outdoors, and neutrals provide a subtle nuance, balancing bold patterns or creating a quiet, elegant backdrop. Despite talk that statement walls are passé, when executed thoughtfully they remain a powerful tool for injecting drama, focus, and visual interest into a room. Paint has also evolved far beyond a simple wall covering. Its popularity endures thanks to the infinite palette of colours, the increasing versatility of finishes, and technological advances that make paint highly resilient and capable of extraordinary effects. Today’s paints are not limited to walls, they can be applied to ceilings and even floors, transforming the “sixth wall” and offering endless opportunities to personalise and enrich living spaces. Together, wallcoverings and paint provide a dynamic canvas for creativity, blending texture, pattern, and colour to define the mood, character, and atmosphere of a home.
Onça Turquesa features a bold animal design from Tres Tinta’s Bossa Nova collection. Top Left The Odyssey handcrafted wallcovering in Loam colourway is from Mark Alexander’s new Grasscloth Prints collection. It captures the harmony of geometric motifs and organic forms. Crafted entirely from botanical fibres like abacá, raffia, jute, and arrowroot, each design begins as hand-painted artwork in the studio before being screen-printed onto richly textured grounds. With their tactile beauty and natural imperfections, these smallscale designs bring versatility, artistry, and an authentic connection to nature into any space. Mark Alexander is available from Alison Bethell Collins Interior Design in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.alisonbethellcollins.com), Cortidea on the Mijas Road (www.cortidea.es), Arte del Lusso in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.artedellusso.es), and GC Studio in C.C. Le Village in Marbella (www.gc-studio.es).

La Poveda in Marbella (www.themajlis.es), as well as Alison Bethell Collins Interior Design (www.alisonbethellcollins.com) and Arte del Lusso (www.artedellusso.es), both situated in San Pedro de Alcántara.

While statement ceilings have stolen the show, Farrow & Ball’s Colour Curator Joa Studholme says it’s time to cast our eyes down and give the sixth wall the attention it deserves. “Floors shouldn’t be an afterthought,” Joa explains. “A painted floor can completely transform a space, whether you’re making a bold statement, grounding your design, or simply refreshing a room.” With the brand’s durable Modern Eggshell and new Flat Eggshell finishes, your floors can finally step into the spotlight. Shown here on the walls and ceiling is Farrow & Ball’s Duster No.319 in Dead Flat and the floor features Dibber No.312 in Flat Eggshell (www.farrow-ball.com).

OUTDOOR LIVING ALL YEAR ROUND
The latest outdoor collections are proving that style doesn’t have to come at the expense of comfort. Designers are embracing thick cushioning, soft fabrics, and gently curved silhouettes that beckon you to sit back, relax, and truly linger. Here in the Mediterranean, we are fortunate enough to enjoy al fresco dining for most of the year, making the choice of dining sets more important than ever. Look for tables and chairs that combine resilient materials such as powder-coated aluminium or weatherproof teak with plush cushions that invite long, leisurely meals. Modular designs or pieces with slightly curved backs and armrests can enhance comfort without compromising style, allowing your outdoor space to accommodate both casual gatherings and sophisticated entertaining. Outdoor kitchens are also having their moment, offering the perfect balance of practicality and conviviality. Cooking outside means the chef can stay part of the conversation, while thoughtfully designed surfaces, storage, and integrated appliances reduce the need to run back and forth from the indoor kitchen. It’s a way to bring functionality and sociability into one seamless experience. And as outdoor spaces evolve, so do shade solutions. Modern pergolas, retractable awnings, and umbrella systems now provide shelter from unpredictable weather as well as the sun, ensuring your terrace remains usable even when the sky turns grey. With these innovations, outdoor living is an allyear extension of your home, a place to relax, dine, and gather in style.

A LOVE FOR LIGHTING
Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in interior design, capable of transforming a space and the way we experience it. The right illumination can define mood, enhance textures, and draw attention to architectural details or objects. Soft, diffused light creates an intimate, calming atmosphere, while strategically placed accent lights add drama, highlight focal points, or guide movement through a room.
Chandeliers no longer need to be grandiose to make a statement. Today’s designs reinterpret glamour with a minimalist touch, offering decorative hanging lights that are elegant and approachable. Pendant lamps can serve as sculptural focal points while maintaining clean, uncluttered lines, their versatility extending to adjustable heights, modular configurations, and subtle finishes that create different moods.
Wall sconces combine form and function, providing ambient illumination while accentuating architectural features or artwork, enhancing visual comfort and layering light without taking up floor or table space. Meanwhile, reading lamps and a growing array of portable table lamps allow light to follow you wherever it’s needed, offering flexibility to illuminate nooks, workspaces, or spontaneous moments throughout the home. Together, these lighting solutions demonstrate that understated design can be both striking and subtle, transforming interiors into spaces that are beautiful, functional, and alive with atmosphere.

Solaia Residence introduces a fresh standard of modern living to the Costa del Sol, defined by its ethos of design integrity, responsible living, and quiet luxury. With just 22 boutique apartments and penthouses, this new development near Cancelada delivers all the benefits of a fullservice residence, a clear commitment to sustainability and beautiful architectural precision.
Design and Detail
Solaia’s design philosophy draws on understated elegance, natural light, and a connection to the outdoors. The architecture is clean and contemporary, with generous windows that draw the eye toward sea and garden views. The homes, ranging from two to four bedrooms, have been designed to feel calm and balanced.
Inside, neutral tones, high-quality finishes, and smart layouts create spaces that are practical and beautiful. Living areas flow naturally into terraces, bedrooms are positioned for privacy, while kitchens and bathrooms are finished to a high standard, using durable and tactile
materials. From morning sunlight filtering through full-height windows to stunning evening views, each home has been shaped to enhance everyday living.
Smart, Sustainable Living
Sustainability and smart living sit at the heart of Solaia’s design. Each home is equipped with a discreetly integrated system that lets residents manage lighting, temperature, blinds and security with ease. Overall, its design uses natural ventilation, insulation and orientation to manage temperature efficiently, reducing the need for artificial cooling or heating. Materials and systems have been chosen with long-term responsibility in mind, creating homes that are energy-conscious without compromising comfort or style.
Wellness and Community
The amenities at Solaia elevate the experience beyond the private home. A heated outdoor pool creates a tranquil setting to enjoy year-round. Inside, residents have access to a wellness area that includes a yoga and fitness studio, a spa space, and a relaxation zone.
A co-working space provides a professional environment without leaving home, and concierge services and security ensure that daily life runs smoothly, while private parking, electric car charging, and dedicated storage areas reflect the project’s attention to detail.
The Solaia Standard
With only 22 residences offering a mix of two, three and four bedroom properties, Solaia stands out for its balance of exclusivity and functionality. In a market where new developments often compete on spectacle, Solaia is confident and practical but is far from being plain. Every element, from its smart systems to its landscape design, has been considered for the way people actually live.
The “O” in Solaia’s name, inspired by an eclipse, symbolises this balance, capturing the essence of a development that represents a new generation of Costa del Sol living where design, wellbeing, and sustainability align.
Solaia Residence is a place that feels good to come home to and one that will continue to stand the test of time.

THE ART OF NORDIC SLEEP
JONAS CALSON ON TWO DECADES OF JENSEN BEDS IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL
This year marks 20 years of Jensen Store as the official Jensen Beds dealer for Spain and Portugal, celebrating two decades of Scandinavian craftsmanship and design. Jonas Calson took over the Marbella store in 2022 and, as head of sales, marketing, and partnerships, he has been instrumental in expanding the brand’s reach and visibility, introducing more customers to the benefits of Nordic quality and sleep innovation. Under his direction, the Nueva Andalucía showroom has evolved into a true Scandinavian hub, where Jensen sits alongside two complementary Nordic brands; Slettvoll, the Norwegian premium furniture company, and Wood on Wall, the Swedish specialists in acoustic wall design. Here, he shares Jensen Beds’ success story with us.
What makes Jensen Beds stand out?
I firmly believe that quality rest transforms daily life. For more than 75 years, Jensen has perfected the balance between comfort, design, and durability. Every element of our beds, from the sustainably sourced materials to our precision-engineered pocket springs, is designed to provide deep, restorative sleep. Our product range is also broader than most competitors with beds for master bedrooms, guest rooms and children’s rooms. Many of our clients choose to furnish their entire home with Jensen beds. It’s a true testament to the trust they place in the brand.
How has Jensen evolved with new sleep technology?
We’ve always embraced innovation while staying true to our Scandinavian roots. Smart zoning, adjustable comfort, and eco-conscious materials
are now central to our designs yet the soul of our beds still lies in the Nordic craftsmanship. Every Jensen bed is made in Norway. We combine innovation with authenticity to create sleep experiences that adapt to individual needs and feel distinctly Scandinavian.
Which Jensen innovation are you most proud of?
One of our proudest achievements is the Jensen 5-Zone System. It’s a precision-engineered spring system that supports the body’s natural alignment throughout the night, with each zone calibrated to relieve pressure exactly where it’s needed, especially around the shoulders, hips, and lower back.
We also developed our Exact Comfort System which allows users to adjust bed firmness with a remote. It’s incredibly popular for guest rooms or for those who need flexible support, such as people with sensitive backs. These innovations represent our philosophy of ‘natural sleep’ where every material and design decision works in harmony with the body.
What kind of experience do customers have beyond the purchase?
Buying a Jensen bed is the start of a personal sleep journey. From the first consultation, we take the time to understand our customer’s comfort preferences, space, and design vision to create a bed that feels uniquely theirs. Once delivered, we offer long-term support and guidance to ensure that every Jensen bed continues to deliver the same quality of rest, year after year. When people bring home a Jensen bed, they’re bringing home a promise of better sleep and quality that lasts.

How does Jensen approach sustainability?
Sustainability is part of our DNA. Every Jensen bed is designed and made in Norway using responsibly sourced materials and renewable energy. We’re proud to hold the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, one of the world’s most demanding sustainability certifications. We continuously reduce waste, limit transport emissions, and create products that are built to last.
What can visitors expect at the Marbella showroom?
The Marbella showroom is a place to explore the full Jensen range in a calm, inspiring environment. Visitors can test different comfort levels, fabrics, and designs, guided by expert advice tailored to their needs.
Upstairs, Slettvoll showcases beautifully crafted furniture while Wood on Wall presents its innovative wall panels in wood, metal, and stone. We’ve created a space that embodies Scandinavian lifestyle at its best.
Let’s talk pocket spring mattresses. Why are they so important?
A pocket spring mattress offers individual support as each spring moves independently, adapting to the body’s contours and maintaining proper
spinal alignment. They also minimise movement between partners. At Jensen, our spring systems are developed in-house to deliver exceptional ergonomic performance. The Jensen Aloy System, for instance, features extra-soft shoulder zones and firm lumbar support for perfect body balance. It’s this blend of sleep science and Nordic craftsmanship that makes Jensen beds so distinctive.
What’s next for Jensen?
The future of sleep lies in personalisation, sustainability, and well-being. I believe beds will become more intelligent, adjusting to our bodies, our habits, and even our temperature to promote better rest and recovery. My role is to ensure that this innovation always serves real people and real lives. By listening to our customers and staying true to Nordic values, we’re helping redefine what it means to invest in sleep as a cornerstone of living well.

THE ART OF EMOTIONAL DESIGN
HEIDI GUBBINS ON INTERIORS THAT BALANCE BEAUTY, EMOTION, AND EFFORTLESS LIVING
Heidi Gubbins is the creative force behind her eponymous studio in Marbella, transforming spaces into environments that are elegant, personal, and thoughtfully curated. Guided by a passion for beauty and harmonious living, Heidi blends artistry, functionality, and a quiet sense of luxury in every project.
How did your journey into design begin?
I’ve always had a curious eye. From a young age, I was fascinated by how creativity could transform the way something feels through art, music, movement, or even the way a spice makes a dish unforgettable. My path into design evolved naturally. Every person and experience taught me something new, sometimes through guidance and other times through quiet observation. At 21, I tackled my first renovation, selecting every detail myself. Little did I know that later I’d be designing bespoke dream homes for clients.
What was your vision when you founded your Marbella studio in 2019?
I wanted to express my creativity and offer a personal, seamless service. My goal was to create spaces that make people feel good. Over time, that vision evolved into a more holistic philosophy, where emotion and experience sit at the heart of every design.
You often talk about starting at “level zero.” What does that mean?
It’s about beginning from a place of pure openness. Each project has its own
essence and story. I start by observing people and the space, allowing the surroundings to guide me before the narrative unfolds naturally.
How do you discover what clients really need?
I like to observe and listen. Often, what people need isn’t expressed directly; it’s something you sense in conversation or how they describe their daily life. I believe in open communication and welcoming all ideas, even the unexpected ones.
How do you balance leading the vision and co-creating with clients?
It happens organically. There are moments of brainstorming and others where I lead the vision so the project finds its rhythm.
Your work merges artistry with functionality. How do you make spaces both beautiful and lived-in?
A well-considered layout is essential; it’s what allows daily life to flow naturally. Then comes the artistic layer that brings soul. Design challenges –a misplaced beam or awkward corner – are chances to create something intentional. Functionality and creativity should enhance one another.
What makes you stand out in Marbella’s luxury design scene?
I don’t focus on standing out. I follow intuition rather than trends, thinking differently and freely. If that makes the work distinctive, it’s simply a reflection of that freedom.
You’ve recently received recognition for projects like the “Boho Wellness” spa. Tell us about it.
That project is close to my heart. We worked with challenging spaces yet transformed them into something uplifting. Each room drew from nature and its strength, adaptability, and beauty. It became a reflection of life itself: growth through challenge.
How do you weave sustainability into luxury?
Through thoughtful choices, using quality materials that last, and working with local artisans. Small, conscious decisions have a big impact without diminishing elegance.
What does “luxury” mean to you?
Luxury is a feeling of peace, health, comfort, and connection. It’s being surrounded by beauty, nature, good food, and people you love. The right texture or light can completely transform how you feel in a space. Luxury design is where emotion meets form, and beauty becomes a way of living..
Where do you find inspiration?
The patterns, colours, and movement of light in nature inspire me. As do art, travel, music, and craftsmanship. Inspiration is everywhere when you look with curiosity and joy.
What else can we expect from Heidi Gubbins Studio?
We have exciting residential projects underway and I’m eager to push boundaries with designs that are both innovative and deeply personal. My focus is on creating spaces that embody quiet luxury, timeless allure, and wellbeing, both in Spain and abroad.

Exhibitors reported productive business interactions and were particularly satisfied with the mix of national and international buyers, reflecting the fair’s continued importance as a hub for trade and networking.
The organisers showed notable adaptability in the face of logistical challenges. A TOAST TO TIMELESS MOMENTS
BY NICOLAS WINE MERCHANT
Everything seems to shine a little brighter in the holiday season. Homes are filled with festivities, tables are dressed in their finest, and glasses are raised to the simple joy of being together. And few things capture the spirit of these moments better than a beautiful bottle of wine. From the delicate sparkle of Champagne to the deep ruby of a fine red, each bottle tells a story of craftsmanship, terroir, and the pleasure of sharing. Here’s our guide to the wines of the season.
CHAMPAGNE The undisputed symbol of celebration, a glass of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs or Bollinger Rosé adds sophistication to any gathering. The fine bubbles and aromas of citrus, pear, and brioche invite you to slow down and savour. For the same refinement without alcohol, today’s premium alcohol-free sparkling wines, such as French Bloom or Nectarose, deliver all the ritual without the compromise.
WHITES A round and buttery Chardonnay offers comfort and refinement in every sip. A Meursault from Burgundy or a Puligny-Montrachet brings
notes of hazelnut, vanilla, and brioche. These whites are generous yet balanced and are the perfect match for festive dishes such as seafood and roast turkey.
REDS A silky Pinot Noir from Burgundy or a bold Château Margaux from Bordeaux pairs beautifully with roasted meats and winter dishes. Their warmth, balance, and depth bring harmony to every course.
A good wine becomes part of the meal and adds to the sense of occasion. So, open something special this festive season and share it with those who matter most. Because the best wines, like the best moments, are meant to be enjoyed and remembered.
There is a wide selection of exceptional wines for the festive season at Nicolas wine boutique. Visit their stores in Guadalmina (Centro Comercial Guadalmina), Elviria (Centro Comercial Contur), or Aloha Gardens (Plaza Aloha), or browse online at www.nicolasmarbella.com.
OPEN DE ESPANA 2025
PRESENTED BY MADRID
BY DR GARRY HENDERSON
The Spanish Open is the fifth oldest national golf championship in the world. This year the tournament took place from 9th to 12th October at El Real Club de Campo Villa de Madrid which has hosted the tournament since 2019. The course is located only a few minutes from the centre of Madrid and, indeed, the Royal Palace can be seen from the golf course.
The club’s history dates back to 1930 but perhaps the most historic event took place in 1992 when the Mayor Jose Maria Alvarez del Manzano and legendary Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros signed the contract awarding the construction of nine additional holes to complete what is now the Championship course.
The first winner of the Spanish Open in 1912 was Arnaud Massy, a Frenchman who was most famous for being the first non-British player to win the Open Championship. Famous names who have also hoisted the trophy include Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo, Peter Alliss, and John Rahm.
Notable names in this year’s event included John Rahm, Sergio Garcia,
and Patrick Reid. The final day saw a very exciting tussle and with perhaps six holes to go, the event was wide open. It ultimately came down to two English players, namely Marco Penge and Dan Brown.
On Saturday, Penge had a red hot putter and shot a near flawless 64 or seven under par. However, Penge has a self confessed performance anxiety problem and the day the cheques are handed out tends to highlight any mental weaknesses a player may have. His driver was erratic on Sunday hitting only three of 12 fairways.
Meanwhile, Dan Brown had an unspecified neck or shoulder injury and received on course physiotherapy to enable him to continue. Despite this, he managed to shoot 67 on day four to force a play-off against Marco Penge. The first play off hole was over the driveable 18th and Penge managed to get up and down from the side of the green for a birdie against Brown’s par, securing his third victory of the year on the DP World tour. I would imagine the more he wins, the less he will experience performance anxiety.

THE SEASON TO SHINE
FIVE-STAR LUXURY AT THE REYKJAVIK EDITION
Life on the Costa del Sol is a privilege. The sun shines almost yearround and days roll seamlessly from one season to the next. But, for those of us from cooler northern climates, we also know there’s a certain magic in the shift of seasons with the crunch of frost, dark evenings, and the thrill of winter skies lit up by nature’s great spectacle, the Northern Lights. This winter promises to be even more special when we enter a solar maximum, the peak of the sun’s 11year cycle, bringing stronger geomagnetic storms and brighter auroral displays than we’ve seen in over a decade. Until April 2026, the skies above the northern countries are alive with possibility. If you’re curious to experience that winter feeling, now is a good time to do it and Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital, is having its moment. It has evolved into a cosmopolitan hub, celebrated for its inventive dining, hip cafés, music scene, and vibrant nightlife. Compact yet cultured, it’s a city where glaciers and geysers sit beyond the skyline, and design, art, and architecture are at its core. The Reykjavik EDITION, the city’s first truly world-class luxury hotel, is at the centre of this renaissance. It was conceived by hotel visionary Ian Schrager, the man who pioneered the boutique hotel movement, and known for his ability to capture the spirit of a place. Perched on the harbourside beside the iconic Harpa Concert Hall, the hotel captures everything that makes Reykjavik unique. Its sleek black façade nods to Iceland’s dramatic lava landscapes while interiors are full of warmth and texture.
Inside The Reykjavik EDITION, the lobby is a sight to behold. You’re greeted by volcanic basalt stone, sculptural totems, and even a digital re-creation of the aurora borealis, projected in atmospheric waves of green and purple. A central fireplace anchors the space, flanked by bespoke Icelandic crafts and soft lighting.
The hotel’s 253 rooms and suites are havens of Nordic calm and a mood board of pale ash wood, muted greys, local wool throws, and expansive windows framing the harbour, city, or mountains. For a true indulgence, the penthouse suite offers a private terrace with sweeping views and a marble-clad bathroom with its own fireplace. Food is equally central to the EDITION experience. At Tides, Michelinstarred chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason (of Dill fame) presents modern Icelandic cuisine with open-fire cooking and seasonal ingredients. For intimate evenings, Tölt is a hidden cocktail bar inspired by Icelandic horses, and The Roof lounge bar on the seventh floor is all about the skylines and panoramas and, for aurora season, it may be the chicest spot in town to catch the Northern Lights. Then there’s the spa, a social concept blending hammam, sauna, plunge pools, and a bar, because in Iceland, wellness and conviviality go hand in hand. Post-treatment, it’s not unusual to sip a moss-infused vodka in the geothermal waters before heading out to chase the real Northern Lights. The Reykjavik EDITION is the embodiment of Reykjavik; raw nature, refined design, and more than enough edge to keep things interesting.

HOW BREATHING BEATS STRESS
BY RACHEL GARROD
Our work and social lives can all put tremendous stress on our bodies. For most of us, we just push through, but the problem is that constant stress has a nasty kick to it: inflammation. This starts in the body as a protective mechanism - the body’s immune system response to an injury or a pathogen. Swelling and redness around the site of a cut, for instance, may be a sign of inflammation. Inflammation works beneficially when we have an acute illness or infection, but when it doesn’t turn off, it is known as chronic low-grade inflammation. And it’s this low-grade inflammation that causes problems such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia, respiratory disease, and arthritis.
So much in our daily lives triggers inflammation: obesity, poor diet, smoking, inactivity, and stress. Fortunately, there are things we can do that may help relieve stress and its associated inflammation. For millennia, people have used breathing exercises to aid relaxation and facilitate rest, but studies are now showing positive effects on stress. One breathing technique, Resonant Breathing, has been shown to significantly increase heart rate variability (HRV) - an indicator that the body is in a more restful state (Sharma et al., Cureus, 2022).
Resonant Breathing is slow, rhythmic breathing in and out through the nose. In this randomised controlled trial, young healthy men were instructed to practice regular slow breathing at a rate of six to 6.5 breaths per minute. An app facilitated daily training of 20 minutes over a four-week period.
The control group was given no instruction or app. After the training programme, HRV in the resonant breathers was significantly higher than before, and their perception of stress was lower. The control group showed no significant increases in HRV or reductions in stress.
The best way to achieve Resonant Breathing is to perform the breath cycle (inspiration and expiration) over a 10-second period. Breathe in through the nose for a count of four and out through the nose for six. This ensures a breathing rate of six breaths per minute. Allow the air to flow in and let the tummy swell as you inhale and softly flatten as you exhale. Some people argue that five breaths per minute is more effective; this can be easily achieved by adding a short two-second pause at the end of exhalation. Other evidence suggests that this pattern influences our brain waves, enabling slower, deeper rhythms that encourage relaxation and meditative contemplation.
So why not practice this simple technique to help slow things down and improve your body’s response to stress? And if you’d like help perfecting this technique or wish to sign up for one of her regular Breathwork workshops, get in touch with Rachel at Better Breathing Physio.

MADRID – MARBELLA
DO YOU NEED A LAWYER TO BUY PROPERTY IN SPAIN?
Whether it’s a dream home or a business investment, buying property in Spain is an exciting milestone. It can also be daunting, especially taking a foreign legal system into account. Here, the multilingual team at Welex Lawyers & Accountants in Marbella explains why hiring a legal expert, and requesting a property report, is the smartest move you can make to protect your investment and your peace of mind.
Is it mandatory to hire a lawyer?
Strictly speaking, no. Spanish law doesn’t require you to hire a lawyer to buy property. But just because it’s not mandatory doesn’t mean it’s not essential. Without legal guidance, it’s easy to overlook hidden debts, planning issues, or missing paperwork that could cause major problems later. Most postpurchase disputes in Spain could have been avoided with proper legal advice.
What is a property report?
A property report (or Legal Real Estate Report) is a comprehensive document prepared by a specialist lawyer, providing a detailed analysis of the legal status of the property and typically includes:
• Land Registry Check (Nota Simple) To confirm ownership, boundaries, and whether there are mortgages or charges attached.
• Cadastral Verification To ensure property dimensions and usage match official records.
• Planning Licences To confirm that the property is legally built and habitable, with the correct permits.
• Tax and Debt Checks To identify unpaid taxes, community fees, or utility bills that could become the buyer’s responsibility.
What can go wrong without legal advice?
Without a lawyer, buyers risk:
• Acquiring a property with hidden debts or irregularities
• Signing contracts that don’t fully protect their interests
• Buying a property that can’t be legally registered or inhabited
• Facing fines or legal disputes after completion
Buying property with a lawyer and a professional property report is an investment in security and peace of mind. Based in Marbella, Welex Lawyers & Accountants is a team of experienced lawyers, economists, and tax advisors specialising in real estate law. If you’re thinking about buying property in Spain, they are on hand to make the process smooth sailing and stress-free.
