Letter From the President

Dear Academy Family,

The best way that I can categorize this school year — a year that includes a celebration of the Academy of the Holy Names’ 140th anniversary and a pivotal time when our community welcomed a new leader in myself as president — is with tradition and opportunity. The Academy of the Holy Names is time-tested and unwavering in its commitment toward a holistic, faith-based education. Still, AHN is poised for the future and ready to build on the success and momentum of the past decade.

It is a sacred and privileged task to steward a learning environment in which our boys, girls and young women learn about the world, come to know themselves and God, and live with and for others. This labor of love was modeled by our foundress, Blessed Marie Rose Durocher. Guided by the Sisters of the Holy Names, I am honored to play a part in preserving and enhancing our independent, Catholic and SNJM identity.

I look forward to executing the Sisters’ vision with colleagues on our board, leadership team, faculty and staff, and with you.

My first year as president has been about learning and listening to anyone and everyone. The legendary coach John Wooden said it best when he noted, “Good leadership is the ability to listen — really listen — to those in your organization. An effective leader is very good at listening, and it’s difficult to listen when you are talking.”

I have taken this advice to heart and put it into practice, having met one-on-one with more than 50 benefactors, nearly each of the 160 faculty and staff members, and more than 400 current parents who attended grade-level meet-and-greets this past fall. These events were hosted by gracious and loyal Academy families, and the welcome and goodwill have been inspiring. I have also attended every event possible in the first half of the school year — often wishing I could be in several places at the same time — and have enjoyed every minute of it thus far.

In the second half of my first year, I plan to continue to climb the proverbial ladder, all the while, navigating the learning curve, as the landscape of education is an exciting and ever-evolving reality. I have so many more wonderful Academy people to meet and perspectives to learn about — most notably our current students and alumni. I am excited to share that we have commenced the process of creating our next five-year strategic plan. This process will provide us with an opportunity to more formally engage and collaborate with all Academy parents, alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends. After vetting numerous consultants, we have secured the firm Partners in Mission to lead our process. Partners in Mission is the premier professional services firm for advancing the mission of Catholic education. We anticipate the new strategic plan will be ready by January 2023, and it will serve as our guiding vision for the years to follow.

As we plan to move forward with forming a new vision for Academy’s future, I am equally excited to share that the Board of Trustees has approved proceeding this summer with the renovation of the lower school, which serves the pre-K through 4th grade. This 10-week project will encompass the entire first floor of the Bayshore building and will complete the final phase of the current campus master plan. Past and future donations will fund the renovation that will significantly enhance our learning spaces and programmatic goals. This edition of the Accord includes renderings and naming opportunities for all who desire to partner with us on this critical endeavor.

The Academy of the Holy Names is a special place. I am committed to its mission of meeting the needs of the time for our students, as Blessed Marie Rose taught us. As we honor the tradition established over the past 140 years, I look forward to exploring the opportunities that lie ahead with you. Introducing PRESIDENT KEVIN P. WHITNEY

After his first 140 days, the Accord staff sat down for a Q&A with President Whitney and edited his responses for brevity and clarity.

Why did you decide to work in education?

I was a finance and computer science undergraduate major. After a co-op, I had a job offer with Johnson & Johnson to enter its financial leadership development program. My manager asked me where I saw myself in five years, and I responded very naturally, “head football coach.” At the same time, during my last year of college, I started coaching due to a football injury. I really enjoyed the teaching aspect, so I became a graduate assistant on the football coaching staff while working toward my master’s degree. I had tremendous role models who believed in me and inspired me to seek a vocation in which I could help young people.

What inspires or motivates you?

I’ve constantly tried to challenge myself, and taking on new challenges motivates me. My faith motivates me, as well. In Mass, when you hear God and the Gospel, those things help me work to be a better man, a better father and a better administrator.

What are you passionate about?

I love learning and improving. I read all the time, and I’m constantly on different types of educational websites or leadership podcasts. I love working with different groups of people, building relationships and learning new things from new people.

What would surprise people about you?

I have an eclectic taste in music. I often go to pop first, but I like everything from Metallica to U2. Also, I have an identical twin brother — we even sound and laugh the same.

In July, the Academy of the Holy Names welcomed its seventh president, Mr. Kevin P. Whitney. Whitney’s 18-year career in independent, Catholic education includes numerous positions at Malvern Prep, an Augustinian school in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and then at La Salle College High School, a Lasallian school in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. He served as dean of students, director of 21st-century learning, and dean of faculty at Malvern Prep, and most recently was the dean of academic affairs at La Salle for the past five years. He was also a computer science teacher, varsity football coach, and rector for the Kairos retreat program. Whitney’s two advanced degrees in instructional leadership and education entrepreneurship give him a unique perspective and skill set that will help strengthen and grow the Academy’s programs and student experience.

What drew you to the Academy?

I felt a deep connection to the charism of the Sisters of the Holy Names, and I saw a great fit the more I got to talk to people and learn about the school and its vision and trajectory. Plus, we love the family environment of the Academy and the chance to be a part of our girls’ education and their development. We are excited to be in a community where people know and really care about one another.

What qualities do you bring as a leader that will continue the Academy’s growth?

I think I’m a good listener, and I’m collaborative. I try to understand diverse perspectives to find the right solution. I have experience in academic innovation, and I’m a strong believer in the holistic development of kids. For me, faith development is just as important as academic challenge. Also, I look forward to bringing an entrepreneurial spirit to the school.

What is the most important thing an Academy student will learn?

That God loves us all, and with God on our side, how can we ever fail? No matter what ups and downs we may have in life, our faith and the Holy Spirit will pick us up when we are down and help us understand who we are and what we want to be.

What have you enjoyed most so far?

Building relationships with the administrative team. We spend a lot of time together. We have some heavy challenges in front of us, but we have worked together to find the best solutions for the school and our kids. I have also enjoyed getting to know our faculty, staff and current parents and look forward to connecting more with our students and alumni in the latter part of my first year.

What have you learned on your listening tour?

The teaching community here is a family. Our teachers are doing a great job, and they really know our students, which greatly benefits them and their education. We have passionate and committed parents and benefactors. We have a program that develops the whole child and challenges them to be critical thinkers and learn the skills needed in today’s world. The presence of our Sisters has changed, so we have to spend time taking on the question of how our lay educators will take up the mantle of the Sisters and be that religious example. Additionally, we need to look at how we allocate our resources to ensure our organization supports and enhances the tremendous programmatic and enrollment growth of the past 10 years and realize the vision for the future.

AHN has a remarkable legacy founded in the mission of the Sisters of the Holy Names. How will you strengthen it?

As we look at the education our children are getting, we want to make sure they have a transformative educational journey. We must give them the foundation they need and look at new disciplines to expand their horizons. We will continue to require professional excellence from our faculty and staff, and ensure they have the training and resources they need. I want the school to strive to be an authentic learning community, where teachers challenge the status quo and parents partner in supporting their children’s education. I want to ensure that we have a vibrant, engaged and unified community in the long term.

LOWER SCHOOL RENOVATION SET FOR THE SUMMER

Over the summer, construction on the final phase of the facilities master plan will commence with the renovation of the first floor of the Bayshore building. Encompassing both the original building and the wings, the redesign will boast not only a new look and feel but also an updated infrastructure. Design work is by Wannemacher Jensen Architects, the firm behind the Prince Family Middle School Center, and Oman Construction will complete the work ahead of the 2022-2023 school year.

According to President Kevin Whitney, “After a delay from COVID-19, we look forward to completing the final phase of the current facilities master plan. The Academy has always been at the forefront of education, and our learning spaces must encapsulate the wonderful teaching and learning taking place within them. Our youngest students are developing a love of learning, and we have a responsibility to provide spaces that will allow them to cultivate, explore and grow their interests.”

Renovations will allow all primary learning studios, or classrooms, to share a hallway and learning commons. Pre-K, kindergarten and 1st grade are designated for the South Wing, while grades 2-4 will be in the North Wing. This arrangement provides added safety by shifting students toward the back of the building. Common spaces will offer students more room for collaborative work and teachers more room for differentiated instruction.

As with earlier renovations, the lower school will benefit from additional technology and flexible, age-appropriate furnishings. Both are elements of 21st-century design that enhance the student teaching and learning experience. Flexible furnishings allow seating to be easily rearranged to accommodate the day’s lesson.

Additional features include a dedicated STEM lab and language lab, a larger and enhanced clinic, and a new administrative suite for the principal and guidance department.

The south learning commons, which will serve pre-K through 1st grade students, will accommodate everything from small-group and grade-level meetings to special presentations and speakers.

For Elementary School Principal Bridgid Fishman, a dedicated STEM lab is part of the excitement of science for Academy students. “A solid foundation in STEM-related instruction is critical in 21st-century education. Students are learning STEM concepts in a way that is both developmentally appropriate and fun. Having the added benefit of a dedicated learning space and teacher is a huge bonus. Students enjoy being surrounded by science and seeing what all the other grades are learning. This also helps them make connections between the concepts they learn from year to year.”

With a newly renovated home away from home, lower school students will undoubtedly be excited for all of their classes.

Career Day Evolves WITH RETURN TO IN-PERSON EVENT

In November, the High School Career Day had a new format. Condensed into a fullday experience, students heard from two keynote speakers, attended two breakout sessions featuring Academy alumni, and participated in mock interviews. Also this year, the guidance department introduced the Interest Profiler so students could better gauge which presentations to attend. The assessment is based on Dr. John Holland’s theory that people’s interests and work environments can be loosely classified into six different groups: realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

Students started their day with a keynote address from Academy of the Holy Names’ Board of Trustees secretary Kim Wilmath Hill ’05, who offered a message of perseverance, positivity, a growth mindset and ambition. Hill, who is now vice president for university communications and marketing and chief marketing officer for the University of South Florida, stumbled on her love for

journalism as a scholarship student at the Academy. Her path to her current position has been far-reaching, including stops at St. Petersburg Times, the Florida Board of Regents and ReliaQuest. Of her focus on giving back, Hill said, “If you orient yourself around making a contribution, no matter what you do, you will feel a tremendous amount of job satisfaction. I think that is something the Academy really instilled in me.”

The 23 alumni guest speakers offered a broad range of backgrounds and interests, including diversity, finance, legal, STEM fields, entrepreneurship, hospitality and more. According to college counselor Lisa Kolar, beyond learning about a particular industry, it is more important for students to hear about the alumni’s paths in finding their careers.

journey to their career is a straight shot, and seeing the pathway filled with turns and surprises can help our students develop a positive mindset on their own journey,” Kolar said.

The time spent in mock interviews allowed students to think about how interviews are conducted and learn tips to be productive in an interview. Using sample scenarios and resumes, freshmen practiced for club interviews, sophomores practiced for internships and part-time jobs, and juniors and seniors practiced for college interviews and jobs.

Board of Trustees member Kalinda Campbell ’00 closed the day with a second keynote presentation. Campbell, who is featured on page 26, encouraged students to find their passion. “Do the work that you love. Do the work that you would do for free. Money and everything else will align when you are doing the thing that is heart-driven and purpose-driven.”

LOWER SCHOOL EXPANDS SCIENCE CURRICULUM

New this year, the Academy has a dedicated space and teacher for pre-K through 4th grade science. Dr. Tricia Dieck has worked at AHN for 13 years and was most recently the middle school curriculum specialist and instructional coach. Dieck has always gravitated toward math and science and is excited to be back in the classroom as the lower school science teacher.

Elementary School Principal Bridgid Fishman created the position and has noticed many benefits. She says, “A teacher dedicated to teaching only science allows that person to have a deeper understanding of science content knowledge and pedagogy. Dr. Dieck has the passion for science that is shared with students, thereby sparking greater interest and excitement for science.”

The students feed off the excitement Dieck has for the subject and love having a dedicated science lab to visit during class. Investigations tend to span several class sessions with students’ active engagement and inquiry-based learning. Having a science lab gives Dieck time to prepare and manage materials more efficiently

than teachers of all subjects using one classroom. When the firstfloor renovation is complete, the addition of a developmentally appropriate STEM lab will enhance the science experience.

Dieck will teach the same students year after year, which helps her easily make connections to what students learned previously. “From a teaching perspective, because I am teaching all lower school students, I can see how the science concepts and skills vertically align as students move from pre-K through 4th grade, and with my background as the middle school curriculum specialist, I also know what the students need to be prepared for our middle school science program.”

Feedback has been very positive for the new science position, and Fishman has noticed that parents are very supportive of having a teacher dedicated to only science. “Parents have shared that their child is coming home and asking to do science activities as an extension of what they are learning in class — just for fun!”

While investigating motion using balls, ramps and runways, kindergarten student Victoria Rodriguez says, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had in science!”

CONNECTING MODERN LESSONS WITH Catholic Values

In the first semester, the High School hosted a student showcase featuring the Social Justice capstone projects and AP Computer Science Principles apps. Both highlighted Catholic values, with the capstone projects showcasing solutions to national and global injustices and the apps centering on serving others in alignment with the core values of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

Students in AP Computer Science Principles could choose to base their app on a wide range of data sets. Using that data, various programs were developed, including ones about learning sign language, female legislators, the world democracy index, and workers with disabilities in the United States. Once their programs were functioning, students designed and printed posters to present their work and tie it in with the mission of the SNJMs. QR codes on the posters allowed the school community to interact with the apps while listening to students share their ideas.

“After working so hard this year, it’s helpful to have a reminder that we are learning all of these skills and tools to do good in the world and hopefully make people’s lives a little better,” AP Computer Science Principles teacher Tyler Mokris said.

In addition to their presentation, seniors in the Social Justice course also submitted a research paper and infographic. Beyond connecting to a pillar of Catholic Social Teaching, the project required a connection to the mission and ministry of the Sisters of the Holy Names, a Saint and the influence of popular media. Students also interviewed an expert who works in a related field and completed service in a related field.

Social Justice teacher Megan Dubee combined the lessons and services the seniors have learned at the Academy when creating the project. “I redesigned the course last year to be a deep dive into one particular injustice rather than a surface overview of all the pillars of Catholic Social Teaching. My hope is for the students to understand the complexity of issues, what the Church teaches in her social doctrine, especially regarding the dignity of every human person, and participate in service and action in the context of their everyday lives to create change.”

Evening presentations included Discrimination and Adoption, Abortion and Foster Care (Life and Dignity of the Human Person), Water and the Environment (Care for God’s Creation) and Human Trafficking, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence (Rights and Responsibilities). There were also gallery presentations on Mental Health and Addiction, Media, Body Image and Eating Disorders,

Capital Punishment and Criminal Justice (Life and Dignity of the Human Person), Divorce and Education (Call to Family, Community, Participation) and Preferential Option for the Poor.

In her presentation on discrimination, Gabrielle Morrison ’22 said, “In looking at the pillar of the Dignity of the Human Person, most are challenged to reflect on the systemic and structural dimensions of the issues they encounter, as well as their biases and stereotypes that are surfaced. … We see that injustices aren’t limited to blatant accounts of racism but the institutions that uphold the foundations of this inhumane practice. We encourage you to examine how your day-to-day actions affect your own community and identify ways to promote the acknowledgment of the dignity of every human’s life.”

After two incredible years, unlike any others in the modern history of our school, it is our greatest hope that we are ready to turn the page to a new chapter. In November, high school advanced acting students presented “Alice in Wonderland” with great success. The students prepared all aspects of this timeless classic. Our students did an amazing job from the acting to the technical production! Congratulations to the entire cast and crew!

SWIMMING & DIVING

The team was undefeated in the regular season, winning every dual meet and placing 1st in City Relays, and captured their 14th consecutive district championship and 12th consecutive region championship. At states, the team won 10 medals and broke three school records.

Highlights of the season include the 200 medley relay (Anita Buchanan, Kate Pettit, Ashlin Cannella, Bella Dieffenthaller) setting a new school record at the district meet and breaking it again at states. The same swimmers also set a record in the 400 freestyle relay at states. Individually, Kate Pettit was the district champion in the 100 breaststroke, and Bella Dieffenthaller was the district and region champion in 50 freestyle and set a new school record at states in 100 freestyle.

Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee MARGARET “EMMY” MARTIN ’14

In November, Emmy Martin ’14 was inducted into the Academy of the Holy Names Athletics Hall of Fame. A standout on the golf course, Martin earned numerous accolades during her high school career, including the 2013 Tampa Tribune Girls Golfer of the Year and AHN’s 2014 Senior Athlete of the Year. She was a five-time state qualifier and three-time individual district and regional champion. Her senior year, Golfweek magazine ranked her 45th nationally and 13th in the Class of 2014.

Former Academy golf coach Chris Kumka said of Martin, “Her high school record is the most successful in the history of AHN, and one of the finest prep resumes in the history of the Tampa Bay region. However, it is Emmy’s warm personality and kindness that I remember most from her time at the Academy. She continues to recognize that God has blessed her with many gifts in her life, and she has made it a priority to share them with others.”

Martin received a full scholarship to Texas Christian University, where she was team captain, Teammate of the Year (2019), Most Valuable Team Member (2017, 2018), All-Big 12 Conference Team, and First-Team Academic All-Big 12 (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). She

qualified for three USGA Championships and holds the TCU record for low scoring average (72.9). Last year, Martin completed her rookie season on the Symetra Tour, LPGA’s developmental golf tour.

Martin credits her time at the Academy for building her faith and preparing her for her future. Of her talent, she said, “I’ve always believed your talent is God’s gift back to you, but what you do with it is your gift back to God. With that in mind, a verse I’ve always held close to my heart is Colossians 3:23, which says, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’”

With that work ethic and a desire to serve others, in 2017, Martin founded the nonprofit Played with Heart (playedwithheart.com), which seeks to equip the next generation of girls’ golf with essentials needed to play the game and bring to light the greater purpose found in the sport. She hopes to give other girls the same opportunity she has received through the game, so they may experience and know golf’s greater purpose. Her vision is to expand Played with Heart to all sports and develop leadership programs for young girls.

Why We Give THE MCGUCKEN-ALVAREZ FAMILIES

The Academy has its first sibling Parent Annual Fund co-chairs: Patrick McGucken ’94 and Nina McGucken Alvarez ’01. This year’s theme, Their Vision, Our Mission: 140 Years of Devotion, is most appropriate for their family, as they have been a part of the Academy community for generations. Both Nina and Patrick are third-generation “lifers.” Their grandfather, mother, aunts and many cousins came before them, and their children, Patrick McGucken and Angela Alvarez (2nd grade), Samuel McGucken (kindergarten), and Francesca Alvarez (pre-K), are the fourth generation to attend the school! Today, Nina is the owner and managing partner of McGucken Alvarez, P.A., and Patrick is the vice president of property management and leasing for America’s Realty.

Your family has an extensive history at the Academy. What do you like best about being a part of the community?

For us, the Academy community is more than just our school; it is our extended family; it permeates our lives. For generations, it has formed bonds between our family and others, which we are proud to continue with our children. The best part about being a part of the Academy community is the lifelong friendships, support and shared pride for our alma mater.

Nina, you remain very close to the Sisters. How have they impacted your life?

The Sisters have impacted my life in every way; it is almost impossible to put into words. They have undoubtedly helped to shape me into the woman that I am today. They have devoted their lives to us and asked for nothing in return. As an adult, they are still my biggest cheerleaders, my shoulders on which to cry and a main source of advice and love. I cannot imagine my life without them.

Why is giving back important to your family?

Giving back was instilled in us at an early age, not only by our parents but through our education at Academy. Before becoming an AHN parent, I (Nina) was president of the HNAA, and vice chair and mission chair of the AHN Board of Trustees. Along with our mom, I was the co-chair of the Holy Names Heritage Center campaign. The privilege of an Academy education is not something we take for granted. Now, as parents, we specifically give back through the PAF because, like you, we believe an Academy education is the only option for our children.

What do you want parents to know about the PAF?

Tuition alone does not cover the cost of a child to attend the Academy and reap all its amazing benefits. Donations to the PAF ensure that not only our children but also our faculty and staff have the best there is while continuing to make an Academy education possible for many.

What is your personal goal for PAF?

100% participation, which would really show what a community we are!

Blessed Marie Rose Society RECEPTION

& PRESIDENT’S DINNER

In October, the Bailey Family Center for the Arts, once again, set the stage for this year’s Blessed Marie Rose Society Reception and President’s Dinner. Each year, the Academy hosts the event to honor our foundress, Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, and those who have contributed $1,500 or more during the past fiscal year. After a two-year pause, we were able to finally celebrate the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary and recognize the faithful generosity of the society members.

The evening began with a cocktail hour in the Valdes Gallery and was capped off by dinner on the Lynch Family Stage. Guests enjoyed entertainment by the Quarter Notes and heartfelt speeches by Board of Trustees Chair Ernie Garateix, President Kevin P. Whitney, and high school student Ximena Sanchez ’23.

In her speech thanking the donors for their support, Sanchez explained it had been her dream to attend Academy since kindergarten. “Before freshman year, I had always been a shy and reserved girl. … As I chose my classes in the summer of 2019, I decided to take a step out of my comfort zone and register for Mrs. Kimbler’s intro to acting class. I fell in love with acting and theater. Since that summer day, I have been in multiple school productions, grown in my abilities and confidence, and have made countless friendships that I will cherish. … This growth has been made possible by the generosity I have received from various individuals in my time here. … You have played an invaluable role in my development as well as the development of many other students at AHN, and on behalf of the little 6-year-old girl who had a dream, I thank you.”

KALINDA CAMPBELL ’00

NEWEST HOLY NAMES LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBER

When she was in kindergarten at the Academy, Kalinda Campbell ’00 aspired to be the president, a nun or a doctor. While her life’s path has taken a different direction thus far, the sky is the limit for Campbell. An Academy lifer who found her voice through middle school oratorical assignments and high school speech and debate, Campbell has forged her future from the lessons she learned from Sister Mary Patricia Plumb, SNJM ’55 — find balance, do things you love, and get up and talk in front of anyone at any time.

After graduating from the Academy, Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Spelman College, a historically black college for women in Atlanta. As she explored her career path, she found a passion for diversity and inclusion work. Seeing a void in the industry, Campbell founded The [SPACE] Group, a management consulting and advisory firm focused on the intersection of talent management and diversity and inclusion. She is now the head of diversity talent strategy at Nordstrom, where she ensures the employee population reflects the diversity of North America and makes the brand better for consumers and employees.

“I love connecting people and things and ensuring that everyone has access. It brings me joy creating spaces where everyone has access,” she said. “It’s hard work, but I love it.”

Campbell leads an involved lifestyle in Houston, where she has lived the past 10 years. When she’s not working, she spends her time volunteering — another passion she found at the Academy. Aside from serving on the Academy of the Holy Names’ Board of Trustees, she is also president of the board for Writers in the Schools, and a board member of Preservation Houston, Memorial Park Conservancy and Stages. Campbell has also been an active member of the Junior League for the past 13 years. When she finds free time, Campbell enjoys practicing yoga (for which she is a licensed instructor), being a DJ and exploring her visual art skills.

Campbell wanted to philanthropically support the Academy for some time, and the Holy Names Legacy Society was the perfect fit.

“The school has meant a lot to me, and I could never repay my parents or the Sisters enough for what the Academy gave to me,” she said. “The Academy felt like a second home to me, in a way. I really believe in the mission of the school, and it’s important for me to give back.”

Annual ALUMNI Dinner

On Thursday, Nov. 4, the Holy Names Alumni Association hosted the annual Alumni Dinner at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club. The ballroom was filled with alumni celebrating with classmates from their Holy Names alma maters, with special recognition for the Classes of 1972 and 1997 celebrating their 50th and 25th anniversary. As always, there was a plethora of exciting auction items, and $10,000 was raised to benefit the Sister Irene Marie Brunelle Alumni Scholarship. This year’s scholarship recipient, Sadie Campbell ’22, daughter of Susan Tillinghast Campbell ’91, thanked the crowd for their support of her Academy education.

Alumna of the Year DR. JEANNETTE CAMPBELL CAPELLA ’86

In November, Dr. Jeannette Campbell Capella ’86 was named Alumna of the Year at the annual Alumni Dinner. Capella has worked in the medical field as a trauma surgeon for over 20 years. She attended the University of South Florida for an undergraduate degree, a graduate certificate in disaster management and a doctorate in medicine. Capella was recently named partner at The Iowa Clinic, where she is the associate medical director of trauma services. Before her move, she was the assistant director of trauma at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Altoona in Pennsylvania.

Combining her love of medicine and education, Capella also serves as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She has developed and delivered curricula for students, residents, nurses and other physicians, as well as published research and reviewed

medical papers regarding trauma surgery and surgical critical care. Capella is also a part of the Trauma System Advisory Council for the State of Iowa and the Crisis Standards of Care Subcommittee for the Iowa Department of Public Health. Additionally, she is a published surgical educator with a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Georgia.

Capella has lived by the Academy’s motto, “Esse Quam Videri,” or “To be, rather than to seem.” Since 2001, she has served on federal disaster response teams, including those for Hurricane Rita, the earthquake in Haiti, Hurricane Maria and numerous other deployments around the continental U.S. She also has provided humanitarian aid in Zambia and Honduras. Currently, she serves on the National Disaster Medical System Trauma and Critical Care Team.

Classmate Greta Heinz Brooks explained at the dinner that Capella has felt

overwhelming love and support from the Sisters of the Holy Names since the day she became a student at the Academy. In fact, Sister Mary Patricia Plumb, SNJM ’55, used to babysit Capella’s mother! Because she found the halls of the Academy to be a haven for learning and self-development, she has been a faithful alumna and shared her good fortune with her alma mater. In 2014, Capella established the Endowed Joanne Pascarella Memorial Scholarship in memory of her beloved mother.

In her senior yearbook, Capella quoted John D. Rockefeller: “I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty.” Of her nominee, Brooks said, “She has used this quote as a roadmap for her life. It’s inspiring to see that at 18 years old, coming out of our wonderful alma mater, she knew who she wanted to be, and she had the tools to get there.”

MOLLY DUVENECK SMITH ’88 RETURNS TO ACADEMY

In August, Molly Duveneck Smith ’88 returned to her alma mater to serve as the Academy’s director of advancement. Her experience in school leadership began on the board of trustees at St. Mary’s Episcopal Day School in Tampa, including a term as the board chair from 2011-2014. Smith then served as Jesuit High School’s first annual fund director from 2014-2021. Jesuit’s annual fund doubled in size during this time, growing from $1.1 million to $2.2 million. After graduating from the Academy in 1988, Smith earned a marketing degree from Southern Methodist University. She and her husband, Brian Smith, have three children: their daughter, Margaret, a current junior at the Academy, and sons, Matthew and Andrew, both in college.

What do you enjoy about fundraising?

It’s rewarding to build relationships with the incredible people in our school community — not only our donors but also our students. I’m humbled by the generosity of our alumni, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, and friends to help provide an academically rigorous, Catholic formation for our students. My role is to facilitate that support, and that’s an immense privilege.

Why is it important for people to give back?

A donor positively impacts a young person’s life. An Academy education is a gift that sets a strong foundation for one’s life, and you see clear proof of that in the lives of our alumni. Since tuition doesn’t cover the full cost of educating a student, we turn to our community and respectfully ask them to partner with us in serving these wonderful children.

What do you love most about being back at the Academy?

I love being around the students. Since my office is in the high school, I can interact with our young ladies. They are not only sharp and intelligent but also so engaging. My fondest memories of my high school years at AHN revolve around laughter. I’ll walk past specific classrooms and vividly remember a cherished friend, Sister, teacher or lesson, and I smile to myself.

How has the Academy changed since you were a student? How is it the same?

While the beautiful Bayshore views endure, the interior spaces feel quite different. My office is in the former boarding area of the 4th floor, which was closed off to us in the 1980s, so it still feels like I’m trespassing! What has not changed is the thoughtful dedication of the Sisters, faculty and staff to their students. Schools are a wonderful place to be. The growth from pre-K through 8th grade is a joy to witness. I appreciate the genuine way in which our high school students conduct themselves — that’s the beauty of a single-gender setting for grades 9-12. Brian and I are thankful our daughter (and our sons) had that formation in strong Catholic schools.

What are your goals for the Academy as the Director of Advancement?

As an alumna and a school parent, I have a sincere devotion to the Academy. Our school has faithfully served the youth of Tampa for 140 years. It is our responsibility to build on the foundation that the Sisters established and continue to serve the students entrusted to us. We’ll focus on growing our fundraising revenues and Legacy Society planned giving program, as well as strengthen relationships with our alumni near and far. Vivien Oliva is staying active in her retirement. She continues to serve on community committees and boards, including University of South Florida, Hillsborough County Schools, AHN Board of Trustees and the League of United Latin American Citizens as a member and education advocate.

1973

 The Honorable Virginia M. Hernandez Covington was selected for the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2004, she became the first female Hispanic U.S. District Court Judge for the Middle District of Florida. Prior to that, she was the first Cuban American woman to serve on a Florida appellate court and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Judge Covington also recently received the 2021 Distinguished Federal Judicial Service Award to honor her outstanding and sustained public service, especially supporting pro bono legal services.

1974

 Lincoln Tamayo received a $50,000 award from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program for his work with Academy Prep. The award was presented by Jabil, and Tamayo plans to donate the money to the Academy Prep Foundation.

1976

Bee D’Alesandro Everett’s company, Everett Financial Group LLC dba GreatFlorida Insurance, is a 2021 winner of the USF Fast56. Her company is one of the 56 fastest-growing companies led by a USF graduate worldwide.

1986

Carol Bettinger joined luxury real estate brokerage, Engel & Völkers South Tampa. Bettinger specializes in residential and commercial real estate in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

1987

 Mary Beth Cusack Byrd is a real estate agent specializing in luxury real estate for Smith and Associates in Tampa. She was recognized as one of the Top 50 performing real estate agents in the Tampa Bay market in 2020, alongside her partner, Leslie Minder.

1992

 Dina Busciglio Sheridan co-chaired the grand reopening of Joshua House, a family-style group home for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected in the Tampa Bay area, in May. She has served on the board of directors for Friends of Joshua House Foundation since 2009. She is also a partner at her Tampa law firm, Busciglio Sheridan Schoeb Trial Attorneys.

Amy Henry Palmer was promoted to assistant city manager for the city of Auburndale, Florida. Prior to this promotion, she served as the community development director since 2012. Amy started working for the city in 2002 as a staff planner. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Catawba College in North Carolina and a master’s in urban and regional planning from Florida State University.

2001

 Glyssel “Gigi” Santiago Cooper is the chief operations officer and director at Santiago Therapy Center in Tampa.

2003

Amanda Adams Halks accepted a position as a neuro specialist occupational therapist at Encompass Health in Lutz, Florida. Halks looks forward to running the New York City Marathon in November as a member of the American Lung Association charity team. As a lung disease survivor, this is a huge accomplishment, and she has been waiting since 2020 to cross that finish line.

2005

 Jessica Cruze started a new job at JLL in the product and development services market division as a project manager. She also recently became the events vice president on the Tampa Gator Club board of directors.

 Kim Wilmath Hill was appointed vice president for university communications and marketing and the chief marketing officer for the University of South Florida, where she leads USF’s strategic communications and marketing agenda to elevate the school’s brand, reputation and visibility locally, nationally and internationally. Hill was previously assistant vice president for communications and public relations. She is currently secretary of the AHN Board of Trustees.

Dr. Jonathan D. Marks graduated from the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine on May 12, 2020, where he is now a medical resident.

 Kiersten DeHaven has been named to Notre Dame’s 2021 Domer Dozen. She holds a master’s degree in global human development from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. Between earning her degrees, she served for two years as an English literacy teacher with the Peace Corps in Western Samoa. There, she raised money locally for a creative learning center for over 300 students and obtained grants to retrofit the school’s water supply, so students are never barred from attending school due to a lack of access to running water. After the Peace Corps, DeHaven served as a high school rowing coach in Hamilton, New Zealand, until attending graduate school. She currently lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

 Alina Meador is pursuing a doctorate degree in New Zealand.

2014

 Alexia Acebo graduated from the University of Alabama with degrees in psychology and dance. She has performed aboard the Norwegian Joy traveling throughout Asia, with the national tour of “Chicago the Musical,” and in a Major Lazer music video featuring Marcus Mumford. As theatres across the country have reopened, Acebo had the honor of telling the story of Gloria amd Emilio Estefan in “On Your Feet!,” the Broadway production at the legendary Muny in St. Louis and the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City. Acebo is back in New York City and ready for the next chance to get on stage while building her wellness brand, The BKFST Club, designed to help women heal from hormonal imbalance, premenstrual syndrome and menstrual irregularity, and live their healthiest lives!

2015

Siobhan Lynch and Julia Schifino launched a podcast together, The City Critique. The girls share all the best secrets, tips and critiques on all things NYC as they take listeners around the city to show them some of the best restaurants, bars, speak-easies, gyms, concerts, events and more.

Ashley Achin graduated cum laude from the University of South Florida with a bachelor’s degree in business analytics and information systems, concentrating in cybersecurity.

Vanessa Alvarez graduated from Florida Southern College, majoring in communications with concentrations in advertising and public relations and minoring in Spanish. She is working in Tampa as an assistant account executive at 22Squared.

Audrey Anello graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in finance. She works as a finance analyst at Deutsche Bank.

Sophia Bahr graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in public relations. She is starting her career in health care technology sales at InSync Healthcare Solutions in Tampa.

Karianne Buser graduated from Florida State University with a degree in real estate, majoring in risk management and insurance. She will be working as a commercial real estate analyst.

Meredith Butler attended the University of Kansas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. She will be working for Alberici Constructors, a general contractor based out of St. Louis. Her first project is a designbuild for water treatment facility in Wichita, Kansas.

Kathryn Byers graduated from the University of Florida, majoring in political science with a minor in communications. She is currently in an accelerated nursing program at UF and plans to pursue a doctorate in nursing practice.

Carly Fisher earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Florida Southern College. She is a registered nurse at Tampa General Hospital in the neuroscience unit.

Shannon Flaharty graduated from Florida State University, majoring in humanities with concentrations in communications, digital humanities and film. She will be serving as a full-time missionary with St. Paul’s Outreach.

Riley Gillis graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family sciences, minoring in Spanish. She is currently working as a medical assistant before attending physician assistant school.

Morgan Graff graduated from Florida Atlantic University, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work with a minor in sociology. She is in her second year at the University of Virginia School of Law. This summer, Graff interned for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida and worked as a research assistant for a law professor at UVA.

Katie Hale graduated from Cornell University. She majored in communications and minored in business, leadership and human development. Hale will continue her education at Cornell to pursue a master’s in behavioral marketing.

Julia Hojnaski graduated from Michigan State University, majoring in supply chain management and minoring in insurance and risk management. She is moving to Seattle to work for Microsoft.

Ashley Lambert graduated from Clemson University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental and natural resources, minoring in political science and economics. Lambert moved back to Tampa and is an institutional intake coordinator for AgAmerica Lending in Lakeland.

Lara Lontoc graduated from Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in business admin, focusing on technology and design. She is a digital consulting analyst at Accenture, working in user experience design (UXD) within the digital products team.

Jenna Maceovesky graduated from Auburn University with a degree in communication disorders. She will attend graduate school at the University of Mississippi to pursue a master’s in speech-language pathology.

Alexis Miniet attended Saint Leo University and earned a bachelor’s degree in business marketing with a minor in multimedia management. She is a marketing intern at ACES Nation.

Anna Padron graduated from Florida State University, majoring in political science and minoring in social work and child development. She is attending Stetson University College of Law.

Chloe Paman earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Florida Gulf Coast University. She moved to Gainesville after accepting a graduate registered nurse position at UF Health Shands Hospital Neuro Intensive Care Unit.

Ally Pazzi graduated from The Catholic University of America with a degree in international economics and finance. She attends The Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law on a full scholarship.

Victoria Quinones attended the University of South Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She is pursuing her master’s in biomedical engineering and is working at Vogue International.

Kate Reitz graduated from Florida State University, majoring in environmental science and policy and minoring in French. She is pursuing her master’s in global environmental policy at American University in Washington, D.C.

Haley Schumann graduated from the University of South Carolina, where she earned a nursing degree. She is working in the neonatal intensive care unit at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

Reilly Sleater attended Florida Atlantic University, earning a degree in biological sciences. This summer, she interned as a research associate at Blue Marble Space Institute of Science. She is working as a communications intern for the NASA BRAILLE (Biologic and Resource Analog Investigations in Low Light Environments) project. Sleater is also working full time as a project manager and lab technician at Modern Canna Laboratories.

Olivia Stevens graduated from the University of Connecticut, majoring in psychological studies and minoring in human development and family sciences. She is attending graduate school at Tufts University to pursue a master’s degree in child study and human development.

Rachel Tata attended Boston Conservatory at Berklee, earning a bachelor’s degree in musical theater with an emphasis on dance. She performed in “The Sound of Music” and “Clue: The Musical” at a professional New Hampshire theatre over the summer. Tata now lives in New York City, where she is pursuing an acting career.

Mary Urbanski graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in construction management and a minor in business administration. This summer, she worked at Hewlett Packard Enterprise as a global real estate intern. Urbanski is now pursuing her master’s in real estate at the University of Florida.

Valerie White graduated from Florida State University with a degree in elementary education. She is continuing her education at FSU to pursue a master’s in curriculum and instruction.

Jessi Zakhary attended the University of South Florida, earning a bachelor’s in biomedical sciences and political science. She plans to attend medical school or law school.

Births

 Jen Armas Azzarelli ’02 and her husband, Tyler, welcomed their daughter, Ella Rose, on July 28. Ella weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long. She joins her big brothers, Nathan and Travis.

 Terin Barbas Cremer ’03 and her husband, Jacob, welcomed their son, Max Levi, on May 20. Max weighed 3 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 15.75 inches long. He joins his big sister, Laurel.

 Christa Bartelt Henderson ’03 and her husband, Matthew, welcomed their son, Hayes Michael, on Aug. 24. Hayes joins his big brother, Price, and big sister, Lane.

 Christina McCue Hoek ’03 and her husband, Andrew, welcomed their son, Tucker Cross, on Aug. 19. Tucker weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 21 inches long. He joins his big sister, Palmer.

 Kelley Mulfinger McIlvaine ’03 and her husband, Andy, welcomed their son, Luke Francis, on Aug. 4. Luke weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 19.5 inches long. He joins his big sister, Lucy.

 Susan Glickman ’77 married Curt Anderson on Aug. 12 in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, North Carolina. Curt’s parents served as witnesses.

 Brittany Silva ’05 married Keith Musil on June 4 in Asheville, North Carolina. The wedding party included Brittany’s sister, Brianna Silva Kipp ’07, and bridesmaid Samantha Suarez ’08.

 Kelley Hug ’06 married Matthias Kennerknecht on Oct. 24, 2020, in St. Augustine, Florida, with a small group of local friends and family present. The couple resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where Kelley is a project manager for DPR Construction, and Matthias is director of sales operations for Nivel Parts & Manufacturing.

 Austin Schonbrun ’06 married Kristi Sherin on Sept. 4 in Santorini, Greece, and celebrated with loved ones at Oxford Exchange on Oct. 15. The couple resides in Tampa.

 Elizabeth Ayers ’10 married David Wales on April 17 in Tampa. Alumnae members of the wedding party included maid of honor Alecia Jurado Emidy ’10 and bridesmaids Catherine Blackburn ’10 and Alex Sarau ’10. Elizabeth and David live in Tampa with their golden retriever, Cooper. Elizabeth is a marketing strategist, and David works in business development and sales.

 Kailyn Perez ’10 married John Irving Williams III on Oct. 16 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a reception at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club. Alumnae members of the wedding party included matrons of honor and sisters Katherine Perez Rose ’07 and Kristen Perez Inkelaar ’08 and bridesmaids Gianna Gonzalez ’17 and Angelina Gonzalez ’20. Kailyn’s mother, Norma Hernandez Torretta, is a 1980 alumna.

 Taylor Trayner ’11 married Kyle Richardson on Aug. 21, 2020, in Christ the King Catholic Church. They celebrated with friends and family exactly one year later at Armature Works. Alumni members of the wedding party included groomsman and brother Spencer Trayner ’09, maid of honor Mackenzie Murphy ’11, and bridesmaids Kelsey Langston Campbell ’11 and Annie Swanson ’11. The couple resides in Tampa with their golden retriever, Chief. Taylor earnerd an MBA from the University of Tampa in December 2019 and is an IS business analyst at Amgen, and Kyle is a portfolio manager at Centene Corporation and is pursuing his MBA at the University of Florida.

 Sophia Baldor ’12 married John Kauffman on April 24 in the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Jesuit High School. The reception followed at “Casa Abuelos,” the beloved home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos A. Baldor Sr. Wedding party alumnae members included maid of honor Jacqueline Moreda ’12 and bridesmaids Sarah Henni ’12 and Emily Joseph ’12. The couple recently moved back to Tampa, where Sophia is a cardiothoracic intensive care unit nurse at Tampa General Hospital and John is a business development representative at ReliaQuest.

Sister Lillian Schneider, SNJM S’50, also known as Sr. Alfred of Mary, entered into eternal life on Jan. 30. At Sacred Heart High School, she was a member of the 1947 state basketball team and voted Most Outstanding Athlete. She taught at four SNJM schools, with math her primary subject. At the Academy, Sr. Lillian also served in the bookstore, as bookkeeper, and school archivist, where she lent her knowledge and meticulous organizational skills during the creation of the Holy Names Heritage Center.

OUTRIGHT GIFTS

Outright gifts include cash, appreciated property (stock, real estate), or tangible personal property. All cash gifts are fully deductible, up to the maximum of 50% of your adjusted gross income, and excess can be carried forward and deducted over five subsequent years.

GIFTS OF SECURITIES

Gifts of stock or other appreciated property offer twofold tax savings. Donors pay no capital gains on the increased value of the appreciated property and receive an income tax deduction for the full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring securities is easy, and the Business Office can provide stock transfer instructions. Please call 813-835-3522.

MATCHING GIFTS

Your gift may qualify for a corporate match from your employer. This is a tremendous benefit that can double or triple your support of the Academy. You’ll receive recognition for matching gifts received in your name. Please check with your human resources department to determine if they’ll match your charitable contribution.

HONORARY AND MEMORIAL GIFTS

An honorary gift to the Academy may honor a person during their lifetime or commemorate a significant event. A memorial gift may honor a person who has passed away. AHN will notify the families of those honored or memorialized by the donor’s thoughtful gift.

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE

Real property, either in its entirety or in part, could be deeded to the Academy. It may even be possible to arrange a sizable tax deduction by deeding a home to the school now while continuing to occupy the property. Please contact the Advancement Office at 813-835-3522 to discuss options.

GIFTS OF TRUST WITH LIFELONG INCOME

You may transfer money, securities or other property in trust to the Academy and receive income for yourself (and another) for life. You may receive immediate tax benefits, and ultimately, the Academy will receive the trust property.

GIFTS OF INSURANCE

A donor unable to make a s gift from currently available funds may wish to make a pledge by purchasing a new life insurance policy naming the Academy as the recipient or by transferring ownership of an existing policy to the Academy.

LEGACY SOCIETY

Please leave a lasting impact by joining the Holy Names Legacy Society. Our legacy society includes individuals who make a commitment to AHN through a planned gift. Bequests, trusts, IRA designations, charitable gift annuities, gifts of life insurance, or property are among the many vehicles that qualify as planned gifts. Simply name the Academy of the Holy Names in your estate planning documents, indicating future support without a current outlay of cash. To establish a planned gift or obtain more information on the Holy Names Legacy Society, please contact the Advancement Office at 813835-3522. If you’ve already designated a planned gift to AHN, please notify us so we may properly recognize your thoughtful commitment.

BEQUESTS

When establishing a bequest gift in your estate planning documents, here are some vehicles to consider:

• Your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or a percentage of your IRA.

• The remainder or residue of your estate (what is left over after your other bequests).

• Your entire estate or a portion of your estate.

• A specific dollar amount or specific assets.

• A life insurance beneficiary.

• A contingent bequest that passes to the Academy of the Holy Names in the event your primary beneficiary predeceases you.
