On The Cover: Holy Family Director of Security and Facilities Matt Montgomery. Montgomery, a former Marine, began his career in law enforcement as an officer for the Broomfield Police Department, earned the department’s Officer of the Year distinction in 2015. He also served as the School Resource Officer (SRO) for 11 local school including Holy Family. He is a frequent presenter, trainer, and consultant on school security, with a particular focus on strengthening emergency preparedness.
Principal's Message Holy Family Community, Five Sisters of Loretto first opened an elementary school on the south side of Holy Family parish in north Denver in 1920. The basement auditorium of this fast-growing school was partitioned 100 years ago in 1922 to create a 9th-grade classroom. Thirty students enrolled in the fall of 1922, inaugurating what has become Holy Family High School. The people in the building change, the building itself has changed, but our mission remains consistent. Over 6,000 students have passed through the halls of Holy Family and contributed to the great tradition of this school community. This fall, we warmly welcome an incoming freshman class that represents the 100th class in the history of our great school. In the north Denver area, all of us experienced some degree of trauma or terror this past winter as the Marshall Fire raged through Boulder County. Still, this tragedy was more direct and personal for three families in our school community. Holy Family’s Associate Director of Admissions Kat Greany, sophomore Brodik Howe, and new girls golf coach Heikke Nielsen lost their homes. There will be a long journey for them to figure out how to move forward. During this rebuilding process, Holy Family will listen to their needs and support them however we can. I am pleased to announce the addition of two new members to the Holy Family Board of Trustees, Kim Siurek and Matt Ward. Kim, the mother of eight Catholic-educated children, has an extensive accounting background and will also serve on the Business and Finance committee. She will focus on elevating the status of the Arts at Holy Family. Matt is a 2003 graduate of Holy Family and is the current President of Ward Electric. He will focus on maintaining and improving Holy Family's school building and grounds. Finally, the annual St. Joseph Award recognizes a member of the Holy Family community who supports and protects Holy Family High School just as St. Joseph sought to protect and defend THE Holy Family. This year we are honored to present the St. Joseph Award to Steve Blair. Steve has been influencing lives in our community for 40 years as a teacher and a coach. Vision 2020 Strategic Plan In 2019 Holy Family retained Boston-based Catholic educational consulting firm Partners in Mission to assist us in creating Vision 2020 – a strategic plan that will help guide Holy Family as we enter our second century as a Catholic high school. While the pandemic paused some of our efforts, the Holy Family Board of Trustees and the Vision 2020 Steering Committee worked passionately on this strategy. They drew on the perspectives of alumni, parents, faculty, administrators, and staff to articulate goals, objectives and action steps. The Vision 2020 Strategic Plan indicates several directions of growth while giving strong emphasis on the investment in people. While this plan was developed during a pandemic that presented challenges like none other in the school’s history, what emerged speaks clearly to the face that physical changes to a building are not as vital as the quality of people who work within its walls. We have chosen to focus on seven areas that will have transformational impact on our students and the overall Holy Family experience. While we are highlighting those areas of focus and their specific objectives in this article, the full Vision 2020 Strategic Plan can be found on the school’s website, www.holyfamilyhs.com.
ACADEMICS • Attract and retain top Catholic school educators through strategic recruiting channels with competitive compensation structures. • Develop a growth-centered evaluation system including onboarding and support through professional development opportunities. • Develop and implement courses that meet the needs and interests of a broad range of students. • Support students who may struggle academically or otherwise. • Implement student onboarding strategies that will enable them to successfully navigate the Holy Family curriculum.
CATHOLIC IDENTITY/STUDENT LIFE • Develop an environment that enables students to grow in their personal faith. Holy Family Moments
Mike Gabriel is celebrating an amazing 45 years as a teacher and administrator at Holy Family. Mike served twice as interim principal, was the Dean of Students, Athletic Director, and has been a teacher. He has coached football, baseball, wrestling and even coached the cheer team for a year!
In February, acceptance letters started to arrive at the homes of the 100th class in the history of Holy Family High School, the Class of 2026. Congratulations future Tigers!
Father Tony Ariniello who spends much of the year living in the Biblical town of Emmaus visited Holy Family for the February all-school Mass. Father Tony also visited Holy Family’s Theology classes to speak about his love for the Lord and experience in the Holy Land.
Holy Family's performance of To Burn a Witch took second place in the state at the annual Colorado Thespian Conference this past December. The play was directed by senior Leah Fuller.
The artwork of Holy Family Seniors Evie Boyd and Kaley Anderson is displayed on a traffic box at the intersection of 144th Ave. & Sheridan Blvd. near the Holy Family campus. Broomfield, in partnership with the Public Art Committee, created the Art in Public Places program to enliven public space, nurture community identity and contribute to a vibrant city. In March, Holy Family students served as helpers for the Archdiocese of Denver’s annual 5th Grade Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver.

Holy Family Senior Jaden Reenan formally received his appointment into the United States Military Academy at West Point. Monica Mika and Maria Secrest from the office of United States Congressman Ken Buck made the presentation after an all-school Mass in February.
Trees around the campus were decorated with lights for the first time this past Christmas season.
A new monument sign that displays the Holy Family brand and creates a quality first impression was installed at the main entrance to the Holy Family campus in the fall of 2021.
During Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month in November, the Unity in Diversity Leadership Group brought Mr. Francis Sherwood and his family to Holy Family for an assembly that featured Native American dancing and reflection.

Dance is back at Holy Family! Students created a Poms Dance Club which will become an official competitive sport this fall. In March, Holy Family named Luanne Bartoletta to oversee the cheerleading and poms teams that comprise the Holy Family spirit squad.
Holy Family’s Associate Director of Admissions Kat Greany and her family lost their home in the Marshall Fire. Among the items lost were the Holy Family keepsakes of her two sons and 2020 graduates, Cole and Lance Greany. Kat was presented with new diplomas, varsity letters and yearbooks for Cole and Lance in February.

Holy Family Juniors and Seniors spent time volunteering at the Marshall Fire Donation and Resource Center through Catholic Charities. Located at the former Nordstrom location at Flatirons Mall, the center was open to families who were directly affected by December 2021 fires.

Holy Family Theater's Production of Frankenstein Holy Family Theater’s cast of Frankenstein wowed audiences with five performances to sold-out audiences. The production was one to be remembered. The tragic tale was beautifully delivered by 46 students who comprised the cast and crew. The production was directed by Rebecca Barger. She was assisted by Talise Chandler and Danielle Flores ’20.

School Security: Keeping Our Students Safe When Matt Montgomery was hired by Holy Family High School in 2017, school administrators were confident his law enforcement background would greatly benefit the Holy Family community. They were spot on. “When it comes to school security, you can never be too safe,” said Holy Family Principal Matt Hauptly. “Investing in a highly-skilled, experienced individual to oversee our security was essential in making sure we are prepared to prevent and respond to violent and emergency situations.”
“Matt is well suited to deal with the realities and rigors of security work and he is accustomed to acting under conditions of great stress,” said Hauptly. “Being prepared for any type of crisis is essential to the safety of our teachers and students.”

While many schools assign an administrator or teacher to be in charge of the overall school security, having a person with the proper qualifications, skills, experience, and temperament in this role is vital.
Montgomery is a frequent presenter, trainer, and consultant on school security, with a particular focus on strengthening emergency preparedness. “There is a lot we can do to mitigate the chance of someone being hurt at school,” he said. “Good policies and procedures, along with good training, are key.” Driven by a desire to have students feel that a school is a safe place, Montgomery has served as the Interim Director of Security for the Archdiocese of Denver and also consults with area schools to develop safety plans that meet a school’s particular needs.
For a high school security program to be successful, it must be all-encompassing. Not only must it address traditional issues associated with law enforcement and security, but it must also address emergency management, training, technology, community partnerships, funding, and more. “When people think about school security, they naturally think about school shootings, but school security is much more than that,” Montgomery said. “It involves everything from events prior to an incident all the way through recovery post-incident.” Under Montgomery’s leadership, Holy Family has been praised for developingtraining requirements for staff, working with local agencies on preparedness, and upgrading the security technology the school uses. “Responsibility for school safety and security is not limited to me,” Montgomery notes. “Everyone in our community plays a role.” SPRING 2022 | 11
School Security: Keeping Our Students Safe Using his knowledge and law enforcement experience, Montgomery has provided situational awareness and emergency event training for both Holy Family students and staff. Each year during student orientation, they attend a presentation by Montgomery on school safety procedures. “I don’t want them to feel like they should be scared,” he says. “But our teachers, staff, and students need to be aware of what they need to do in emergency situations.” In addition to writing and reviewing policy and protocols, Montgomery leads exercises and drills that have been conducted regularly since his arrival. “Training and drills are the best way to deal with emergency situations at

schools,” he says. “I have a debrief with law enforcement and school administration after each one, communication is the foundation for everything.”

Holy Family periodically holds lockdown drills to simulate a situation where an unauthorized person has entered the school or there is a weapon on campus. When students hear one of these drills announced they spring into action.
As active-shooter incidents are becoming more frequent on school campuses, this past summer Broomfield Police
It is critical for school security departments to develop healthy partnerships with external stakeholders, such as local police, EMS, and fire departments. Montgomery understood this and leveraged the relationships he developed when he was an officer with the
officers, SWAT, EMS, and fire departments went through a full day of active-shooter training at Holy Family. “It is good to have these first responders get a feel for our building,” said Montgomery. “We know that if an event is reported, first responders will be at our building within 90 seconds.” Taking advantage of new technologies is another way to maintain a strong security posture. In recent years, Holy Family has increased the number of surveillance cameras from 8 to 64, upgraded the emergency alert system and enhanced door security. Digital panic buttons were also installed in key locations to notify police of dangerous situations. In addition, increased perimeter lighting throughout the campus has improved security without compromising the campuses’ aesthetics.
Montgomery, who also teaches forensics at Holy Family, has responded to a wide variety of incidents in his law enforcement career and is proud of the many cases in which he de-escalated situations so that violence was averted. He is trained to handle a variety of issues including abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, drug and alcohol use, school attacks, depression, and threats. He also oversees faculty and staff training for signs of abuse and mandatory reporting. This past fall Montgomery even held a situational awareness class for Holy Family’s Survivors Club which is comprised of students who have gone through traumatic situations. “Matt’s dedication to keeping our students and staff prepared for emergency events shows his genuine care and concern for the students and staff
of Holy Family,” said Hauptly. “His first instinct is to protect.” While Montgomery’s focus on keeping students and staff safe is effective, no school is immune to emergency events. Unfortunately, the possibility of a school shooting or violence is a reality that everyone needs to deal with. However, Montgomery’s effort shave undoubtedly prepared Holy Family to better respond to threats and adjust to the ever-changing school safety environment. “Our parents have trust in us and send their children to us each and every day,” Montgomery added. “I will do everything in my power to make sure everyone is safe in this building, especially the kids, they shouldn’t have to worry about being hurt at school.”

Congratulations State 4A Softball Champions High school sports are cyclical. Players come and go, and most teams’ fortunes tend to ride with the quality of the next class to come through. The Holy Family softball team had their doubters coming into the 2021 season after major losses to graduation. Thoughts of a deep playoff run that we’ve been accustomed to would have to be placed on the back burner for a season or two. But if we learned anything this year about the Tigers, they don’t rebuild, they reload. After some early season struggles that saw them start 2-2 – including back-toback run-rule defeats to Broomfield and Mead – coach Moriah Nguyen and her staff tinkered with things and ultimately found the right combination. Behind the strong senior leadership of Abby Edwards, Ava Kuszak and Annika Manzanares as well as the pitching of freshman Izzy Arroyo, the Tigers went on a run that left little doubts who the favorites were going to be heading into the postseason.
Holy Family swept through the NCAC, going a perfect 9-0 and entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The Tigers took full advantage, making quick work of Denver North and Berthoud in the regional tournament by a combined 25-0 score, giving up just three hits along the way. On Day 1 at Aurora Sports Park, the Tigers rolled past Palmer Ridge in the opening round to set up a 2021 rubber match with league foe Mead in the quarterfinals. That game was 5-5 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, when Manzanares broke it open and was the catalyst to a four-run inning that sent Holy Family to the semifinals. They got a stern test from newcomers Riverdale Ridge in the penultimate game, winning 7-3 to earn a trip to the finals against D’Evelyn, a team that not only pushed them in last year’s semifinals but also beat them during the 2021 regular season. It was Holy Family’s game from the get-go. Kuszak hit home runs in her first two plates appearances and finished with four hits. The three seniors

combined for nine of the Tigers’ 18 hits in the 10-4 rout of the Jaguars and secured the state championship for the Tigers who finished the season 25-4. Holy Family’s back-to-back titles also gave head coach Moriah Nguyen state titles in her first two years as head coach. Holy Family has won three of the last four state 4A championships. Arroyo, who was selected the BoCoPreps Player of the Year as well as the NCAC Pitcher of the Year, went a ridiculous 17-0 during her freshman year with a 1.81 earned run average. It didn’t hurt to have Edwards, the NCAC Player of the Year, as her battery-mate.
Student Spotlight Ava Kuszak

Holy Family Senior Ava Kuszak will graduate as one of the most decorated female athletes in Holy Family history. She has earned 11 varsity letters and has been a part of four state title teams (3 softball, 1 soccer). She will continue her softball career at the University of Wisconsin this fall.
Q: What does being the most decorated female athlete to ever come through Holy Family mean to you? A: I am blessed. I hope it shows future female athletes at Holy Family that anyone can do it. I hope they dream as big as I do. When I came here, I wanted to challenge myself and play as many sports as possible. I also wanted to win. My teammates and coaches also wanted to win, and we're not afraid of the hard work it took. This made us unstoppable.
Q: What has a Catholic education meant to you? A: I went to Nativity before coming to Holy Family. Going to Catholic schools has allowed me to grow in my faith and education. Although I will not be taking religion classes in college, growth in my religion is still important to me. In choosing Wisconsin, faith played a significant role. My future coaches and my teammates not only have a love for softball but love for faith. Holy Family showed me how to manage my academics with my athletics. I feel better prepared for juggling my faith, academics, and athletics next year at Wisconsin.
Q: What is your favorite championship memory? A: The 2021 state championships for soccer and softball. We were underdogs in both. One of the best feelings in sports is proving people who didn't believe in you wrong. No one expected girls soccer to win our first-ever state championship, and no one expected it for my senior softball season. I will never forget the feeling when we won. The joy on all our faces made it the most memorable year ever. Q: Being a three-sport athlete is no easy feat; what has been your secret to success? A: I'm blessed to have parents that allowed me to play whatever sport my
heart desired and coaches that were patient with my schedule. My parents taught me to manage my time and never quit. Learning that has allowed me to have a cumulative GPA of 4.0, play three sports, and work at Broomfield Community Center and Paul Derda Rec Center. I love being busy, and I'm grateful my parents pushed me, practiced with me, and helped me get to where I am today. Q: The Colorado Sportswomen's Hall of Fame recently honored you as the All-Around Athlete for 2021; what does that mean to you? A: When I found out I won, I was speechless. Receiving this award is an amazing feeling. It is proof to all younger female athletes that you can play any sport and excel no matter what. The award is more significant than just me – female athletes in Colorado should be recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. SPRING 2022 | 15
Fall Athletics Recap Football
It was a rollercoaster ride for coach Mike D. Gabriel and the 2021 Tigers football team. Holy Family couldn’t string back-to-back wins together until Weeks 6/7, and the Tigers finished the season 6-4 and earned the No. 8 seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They hosted Pueblo South in the 1st round and gave them a steady dose of running backs Jacob Lawver (218 yards, three touchdowns) and Chase McNaughton (81 yards, one touchdown) in a 34-18 victory. The win set up a quarterfinals game against top-seeded Roosevelt in Johnstown. The Tigers fought valiantly, but it wasn’t enough as Roosevelt prevailed 51-33.
The team has a lot to build on moving forward, including sophomore quarterback Rylan Cooney who was dynamic once he took over the full-time starting duties, throwing for 1,800 yards and rushing for another 300+ in his first varsity season. The Tigers had seven first-team AllConference selections, led by seniors Dominic Mazzulla (TE/DE), Lawver (RB/ DB), Alex Austin (DL), Brady Samaras (LB), John Hulquest (OL/DL), Pierce Kunz (DB) and junior McNaughton (RB).
Boys Soccer
It was there the Tigers run came to an end. Despite cutting the score in half in the 51st minute on Ward’s penalty kick, Holy Family was defeated 4-1 by the eventual Class 4A state champion Nighthawks.
Cross Country
Heading into the season, coach David Martinez knew he had senior leadership in place but was the young talent enough to make the Tigers a contender? As it turned out, the Tigers jelled quicker than many expected and opened some eyes around the state. Holy Family finished runners-up in the NCAC behind Class 5A Silver Creek and hit the road in the first round of the playoffs to take on George Washington. Seniors Jackson Ward, Garrett Havens, and C.J. O’Neill scored goals to propel the Tigers to a 3-1 victory and a second-round match at top-seeded Northfield. SPRING 2022 | 16
The Holy Family girls and boys looked like teams that had a chance to move up and legitimately contend for a Class 3A title in 2021. Both Tigers went into the Class 3A state championships in Colorado Springs on a high after their performances at the regional meet in Lyons.
The NCAC league slate was challenging, with Erie, Windsor, and Mead presenting big challenges along the way. The Tigers scored their biggest win against No. 5 Erie in four games to close out the regular season before heading to the regional tournament.
Needing a top-two finish at Collindale G.C. to qualify as a team for the state tournament, the Tigers foursome played well and, led by Achziger’s fourth-place finish, took second to move on.
The boys, led by top ten runs from seniors Luke Busot and Micah Munoz and junior Anthony Haberkorn, won their regional title. The girls followed it by winning their regional with four girls in the top 10, including Evie Boyd, Alyssa Jany, Anabella Descalzo, and Maya Davis. The state course was not as kind. The top finisher on the boys side, where the Tigers did finish fourth overall, was Munoz in 32nd. He and Haberkorn were the only Tigers to crack the 18 minutes mark on the brutal course. The girls would drop down to seventh in a loaded 3A team chase. Boyd (37th) was the top placer again for the Tigers. Boyd was the only Holy Family runner to earn first-team All-Conference honors. Busot, Jany, and Summer Norwell all were second-team All-NCAC.
Volleyball
For much of the season, the Tigers were without their best outside hitter, senior Anna Hodell, and they found ways to adapt. They stumbled out of the gate early but put it together at the Eaton tournament, where they took down not only the defending champions Reds but 5A Fossil Ridge and 3A powerhouse Bayfield.
The No. 13 seed Tigers made quick work of both Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson at the Region 12 tournament to punch their ticket to state in Colorado Springs. The Tigers defeated Erie early on Day 1 but dropped down to the consolation bracket later that night, losing Cheyenne Mountain. On Day 2, the Tigers would win one more game against Palisade before Mead would end their season on a late night at the World Arena.
Boys Golf
The Class 3A state tournament was played at Spring Valley G.C. in Elizabeth, and after a tough Day 1, the Tigers were out of the mix for a top-three finish. In his second state appearance in as many years, Heitz would lead the Tigers as he finished tied for 12th.
Cheer
This past fall, there was a limited competition schedule for the Holy Family cheer team. Competing in the game day discipline, the Tigers finished second at the league tournament in November. They went to the state tournament in Colorado Springs, needing to finish in the top nine of the 34 Class 5A/4A teams to make it back to the finals. Holy Family’s performance with zero deductions landed them in 14th place.
Coach Will Wilson has always reloaded his program during his tenure at Holy Family, and this season was no different. Seniors Ben Achziger and Dustin Fouts, junior Drake Krommenhoek, and sophomore Rudi Heitz would fill up the Holy Family regional team Wilson would take to Fort Collins. SPRING 2022 | 17

Kathryn Maciolek says her journey in ballet began after seeing the Colorado Ballet perform The Nutcracker with her mom when she was seven. “I just turned to her and said, ‘I want to be a ballerina.’”
She typically trains five days a week for roughly 20 hours. As she prepares for a show the training and rehearsals get more intense and she can be in the studio for more than 25 hours a week. That time commitment outside of school actually helps her handle the rigors of a Holy Family education. “I know I can't procrastinate with studying because I don't have much time each night,” she said. “I have to plan all my homework around my rehearsal schedules. I stay organized and don’t waste time.” She is also quick to credit dance for helping her flourish in high school. “Dance has helped me become a better student because it puts me in uncomfortable situations and forces me to challenge myself,” she said. “It helps me be more outgoing at school and also gives me the courage to try new things and different types of classes.”
That’s when it all started for the Holy Family sophomore, who began her career with the Colorado Conservatory of Dance before moving on to Danse Etoile Ballet studio. She currently trains alongside former principal ballerina, Marie-Jose Payannet, and has attended summer intensives with the Atlanta Ballet. She’s had lead roles in The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid, and supporting roles in Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Arabian Nights, Alice in Wonderland, The Nutcracker, and many other ballets. “There is so much you can do with dance,” she said. “It is both art and athletic at the same time, which is what I find so cool about it. Ballet is especially fun because you can't rely on words to tell the story, it is your dancing and acting.” SPRING 2022 | 18
Maciolek, who came to Holy Family from Nativity Faith & Reason, enjoys being a part of the Holy Family community. “I love the learning environment and how the teachers are so available and willing to help you if you don't understand something,” she said. “They genuinely care about their students and that goes a long way.” With dreams of becoming a professional ballerina, she plans to dance in some capacity in college. “I’m interested in medical school but would also love to minor in dance so I could become a professional dancer with companies like Colorado Ballet or Canada National Ballet.” Not every dancer turns their love of the art into a career, but through hard work and dedication to her academics and craft, the future is bright for this Tiger.

Holy Family Freshman Abby Moore is a real powerhouse! At the age of 14, her strength, athleticism and dedication have already led her to a spot on USA Weightlifting’s Youth Team USA for competitive weightlifting. The team competes internationally and is composed of the top 13-17 year old lifters from across the country. “Having the opportunity to compete internationally is amazing,” Moore said. “Being on Team USA means that I am one of the few youth athletes given the opportunity to represent the USA in international competitions. They take eight athletes total, so it is very cool to say that I am one of the eight youth lifters with the opportunity to represent the USA.” Moore’s interest in weightlifting and fitness was originally sparked by her parents. “I first started weightlifting when I was 11,” she said. “My parents did CrossFit, and I asked to do a workout with them for my birthday. I loved it, so I started a youth program, and it took off.”
As she is currently training for the 2022 Junior World Championships, when she’s not in class she can be found in the gym. “I usually lift for a couple hours five days a week,” she said. “I also still do CrossFit and some extra skill work on the side.”
sport. “My proudest moments have to be when I was second in the nation in 2019 at my very first nationals in California, and then most recently when I hit a total at North American Open Finals that qualified me to compete on Team USA,” shares Moore.
She competes mainly in the clean and jerk and the snatch at large competitions where she hovers around 194 lbs. in the clean and jerk and 147.71 lbs. in the snatch. Unfortunately, an injury prevented her from participating in the 2021 Nationals. Moore explains that weightlifting requires mental strength. “I’ve had to overcome several mental hurdles along the way,” she said. “I need confidence in myself to fully commit to bigger lifts, once I learned to fully commit, I was able to thrive.”
She is not only a talented athlete on land, but in the water as well. In addition to weightlifting Abby is also on the Holy Family swim team where her powerful strength can be seen in the butterfly.

Holy Family High School Alumni Association The Holy Family High School Alumni Association was created to build a community of the school’s alumni. Since its formation, the Alumni Association annually funds two partial scholarships for legacy students, organized networking events, created the Holy Family online uniform store, and works diligently to promote school spirit. In 2021, the Alumni Association worked closely with the City and County of Broomfield to honor and recognize Holy Family’s former Director of Alumni Relations, Patty Gabriel. The street leading up to Holy Family is now “Patty Gabriel Way.” Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.
