Principal's Message Every senior class at Holy Family has felt the nervousness and excitement of walking into the building for the first time, the stress of final exams, and the enticing smell of fresh baked cookies wafting through the building. Unique to the Class of 2021 is the excitement of the expansion of the school, the challenges of going to school in a noisy construction zone, the thrill and novelty of new facilities and then of course the global pandemic. The obstacles posed by the pandemic have become a given of our lives, yet it needs to be stated that you have experienced loss. The loss of performing to a packed house, hearing the roar of the crowd in a stadium, sharing a smile with a friend, or experiencing the Eucharist together as a community. But amidst the loss we also see what you have gained. As Catholic educators we hope to produce graduates possessed of the virtues of chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility. We know it isn’t enough to know what these virtues are and be able to recite them you must also have the conviction and integrity to live them out. Catholic theologian C.S. Lewis said, “Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point.” We may think we possess virtues, but we don’t really know if we believe with conviction until those virtues are put to the test. There are many who feel themselves kind until their neighbor gives them cause to gossip, many who believe themselves charitable until they experience the temptation of material things and many who see themselves as humble until they first see their name in lights. In our classrooms we can test your knowledge of the virtues, but only the world can test your adherence to them. And to pass that test requires courage. Whatever you have lost over the last year you have surely gained the knowledge that you do have courage. It took courage to walk through those doors on August 17th. It took courage and it took a leap of faith. When the national narrative was that it was folly to believe that this could be done, it took strength and conviction to take a rational look at the facts and swim against the tide. But that is what Catholics have always done - we are the original counter-culture. Given the choice between what is True, Good, and Beautiful and what is the popular choice or conventional wisdom, we have always made the harder, but more rewarding choice. Your courage will serve you well in the next phase of your life when your peers and your teachers will often not share the world view of our community. When the Truth is on your side do not be afraid to voice it, do not wither in the face of adversity, but rather proclaim the world as it actually is and do not fear the consequences for as St. Augustine said “The Truth is like a lion; you don’t have to defend it. Let it loose and it will defend itself.” Our paths began together four years ago and today those roads diverge. I hope from time to time you will return to visit us and I hope you know that the school could not have surmounted the challenges of the last year without you. tremendous blessing. From a higher quality of education to socializing with our friends to Mama Burke’s cookies, we got our senior year back. That sense of unity which we took for granted as underclassmen was whisked away in a matter of moments. We lost part of our junior year, but many members of our community lost much more. Covid-19 has drastically changed all of our lives, and that change is irrevocable. But not all change is bad. We can take that change, whether it be good or bad, and use it to catalyze positive developments in our world, in our communities, and in ourselves. We’ve become stronger, more resilient, more appreciative. Thanks to the hard work and support of our school community, we came back this year, better than ever.

Each of us started our high school careers as individuals. We’ve each had very different experiences - whether that be differences in sports, extracurriculars, academics, faith, or finding ourselves. High school has meant something unique to each of us. We’ve fostered our individuality and formed our characters. We’ve all faced our own challenges and celebrated our own successes, but what’s common to us all, is that we’ve experienced all of this, as Tigers. Having tasted the isolation that came with online learning, I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that being in-person this year has been a GRADUATION 2021 | 8

At times, the challenges of the past year have felt disconnecting. But great clarity can be found in times of strife. One thing that I’ve learned at Holy Family that has particularly impacted me this year has been the model of Jesus. My favorite Bible verse comes from Matthew 25:40: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” This means loving your neighbor as yourself, as Jesus would and still does. It means upholding the God-given human dignity in each and every person and holding others accountable for doing the same. This unifying love is what connects us all. Our world needs so much more of that Christ-like love, and I’m glad that we’re all going out into the world to spread these Christian values and teachings of love in all that we do.

We’ve all developed leadership skills, whether that be in the classroom, on the stage, in the court, or on the field. Those skills will translate into all areas of our lives. On top of that, our love for God and His love for us affect all that we do. It’s our job to not only share God’s message of love with others but to extend that same love that He extends to us to every person we encounter. As we step into the next chapter of our lives, as leaders in our communities and servants of God, our energy, passion, and dedication will shine in all that we do. We’ve been given the tools to be forces of positive change in this world. Whether that be through advocating for the disenfranchised, fighting for the inherent dignity of every person, or simply imbuing kindness in all that we do, we have the duty to stand up for what is right. We have the power to not only inspire others with our character but with our witness to God’s love. And that is what unites us. Through its curriculum, teachers, and environment, Holy Family has left an indelible mark on us all, and now it’s our turn to leave our mark on the world. How we take the lessons we learned here and apply them to our lives is up to us. Through our daily activities, we represent not only our own values and beliefs but also each other. We stand here today as one class, united by the love of God and the strength of our convictions. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such a vibrant, strong, and compassionate family. ahead seems shrouded in uncertainty and fear, we must recognize that each of us were created for a unique purpose that’s beyond what we can see or comprehend. As young grade schoolers, we had ideas of who we wanted to become - ideas that shed light on how we perceived the reality of the world around us. We wanted to study dinosaurs as paleontologists, journey to outer space as astronauts, and explore a world we knew little of.

Though the virus took a lot away from us, it helped us realize that we have a lot to be grateful for. As other high school students around the country spent their days learning math and physics from behind a screen, we spent our days learning hands-on in the classroom. We constructed robots in engineering class, made pottery in ceramics, and played sports in P.E. All these things and more were only possible in the classroom, and for that we remain grateful for our teachers, administrators, and alumni. The goal of any graduating class is to set the bar higher: in academics, athletics, in the arts, and in our service work. And as a class we certainly accomplished this goal. Nonetheless, while our successes inside and outside of the classroom speak to who we are, a lot of uncertainty remains about who we will become. Though the future

Through grade school we allowed our identity to be shaped by the world around us. We conformed to standards set by our peers. We tried to be the most popular, to be the best at sports, or to be the smartest at a given subject. But more importantly we just wanted to fit in. Even though our original curiosity began to wear away as we conformed to the standards set for us, our resolve to find purpose stood unchanged. Today as high schoolers we are faced with a similar struggle. We are stepping into a world that's unknown with ideas and convictions developed from the beginning. Our fascination with the world we once knew has evolved, and as we prepare to move forward, we find ourselves both changed and unchanged. We hold on to what we know, but we remain open to the discovery of what we don’t.

Q&A someone new. That summer allowed me to start making the foundations of relationships with people who are now some of my closest friends. What is your fondest memory of your time at Holy Family? My fondest memory would be the first playoff game this past season against Evergreen. Despite not being able to have the normal capacity for fans, it was definitely a special moment for the program and for the school because it marked a big playoff win and sent us to the semifinals for the first time in a long time. I also loved spending time with my peers and my teammates which would definitely be up there for my fondest memories.

the community. First, I was able to connect with my faith especially in my senior year thanks to the Faith and Witness class in which we studied how saints lived their lives. This course allowed me to push my faith from knowledge of facts to seeing how my faith was exemplified through the witnesses of the lives of the saints. Along with this, having class and all school Mass allowed me to see my fellow classmates practicing and living out their faith which allowed me to further develop my faith.

Would you go back and do anything differently in your time at Holy Family? Do you remember the first time that you walked into Holy Family? The first time I can remember coming into Holy Family was for a visit when I was in third grade because my older sister and brother were looking at high schools. However, more recently, I remember walking in after transferring during my Sophomore year and walking down the hallways and being greeted by teachers and my peers and it was then that I remembered that this was my home. What is your first major memory of your time at Holy Family? My first major memory at Holy Family was the football summer conditioning workouts leading up to my Sophomore year. The running and lifting was exhausting, but what encouraged me was how welcoming the other guys were to GRADUATION 2021 | 10

There would definitely be small mistakes that I have made which I wish I could go back and fix but the learning and growth which has resulted from those mistakes is more beneficial to me. I was blessed with a great family and support system both at home and in school which always guided me down the right path. If there was anything I would do differently, it would be to realize that it is more important to be yourself than try to fit in earlier in my high school experience because once I began to live by that, I started to find true friends. How did Holy Family strengthen your faith? Coming from Singapore American School which was not a Catholic school, my faith definitely strengthened over my time at Holy Family thanks not only to the curriculum but also because of

How will your experiences on the football team help you at John Carroll University? Being a part of the Holy Family football tradition has helped to shape me into the man I am today. The coaching staff, specifically Coach Gabriel always taught us how to be better men rather than just better football players. The characteristics of grit and determination will be vital to my success at John Carroll because everyone will be good athletes and in the end the no quit attitude which the HF football program has instilled in me will help guide me. The importance of teamwork and the concept of WE, will allow me to

What did you learn from your role in the Diversity Club? For me, it’s the tangible way of putting Christ’s love into action. One of the founding principles of this club was that we sought to recognize the dignity of each individual at Holy Family and try to love as Christ would have. I am thankful that we were able to have a group of people who are willing to stand up to social injustice and make a real difference in the school community with the help and full support of the administration and archdiocese. Which teacher really made a difference in your education? I have been able to make real connections with almost all of my teachers and they have all provided me with leadership or life advice. If I were to speak about one, Mrs. Candler has made a large impact on my life as a whole. She was my Honors Spanish III teacher in my Junior year and she has always been there for me in times of trouble or even just when I needed to come chat about something. She has been a role model of how to live out my faith and how to deal with challenging situations. One distinct memory would be her letting me come into her classroom during my study hall so I could finish other work or even just our conversations after school about life and what God’s plan might entail. I am extremely grateful to have had a teacher and a friend like Mrs. Candler.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Well, I'm still discerning what I am meant to do but I hope that in ten years I will have been able to earn a quality education and be employed with the beginnings of a family. Regardless of how the next ten years go, I am confident that if I keep Christ and my faith as the center of my life I will end up in the right place.

Q&A the third week of school and I spent the entire week leading up gathering student signatures, hanging posters and praying. When the time came to give a speech in front of the entire freshmen class, my biggest fear was looking sweaty during the delivery as I had team sports last block on that day. Terrified at first to speak in front of so many unfamiliar faces, I settled in after receiving positive feedback from the Ferris Bueller quote in my speech. What is your fondest memory of your time at Holy Family?

What was coming to Holy Family like for you? Walking through the doors of Holy Family feels like sleeping in your own bed again after a long vacation. It’s warm, inviting and cozy. Holy Family has felt like home since the very first day. While I had the privilege of knowing the ropes from my older sister and coming in from a large middle school, freshmen orientation was the day to make Holy Family my own and begin crafting my own high school experience. The main reason why Holy Family is such a special place is because of the administration, faculty and students who know of and desire things greater than themselves. What is your first major memory of your time at Holy Family? Running for Student Council my freshmen year. Elections took place during GRADUATION 2021 | 12

The 2019 boys basketball playoff game against Mead. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t there, I’m sorry. I have never seen so many people crowded into a high school gym and given that Mead is our archrival, the stakes were even higher. The game’s theme was a Western Out so everyone showed out in jorts, flannels and cowboy boots. As a sophomore at the time, we were at the top of the bleachers barely able to see the game but it didn’t matter as fans could feel the energy of the gym in their bodies. After the triumphant win sending Holy Family to the final four, students flooded the gym floor in celebration. Would you go back and do anything differently in your time at Holy Family? Besides the occasional missed opportunities, I would not do anything differently. The obstacles I faced and ultimately overcame led me to become a more mature person and aided in my growth as an individual. I am so thankful for the people I met, sports teams I played on and the classes I took. I am so grateful to have four years to look back on and cherish.

How did Holy Family strengthen your faith? Having attended Catholic school since first grade I never expected my faith to drastically strengthen during my time at Holy Family but I surprised myself yet again. The biggest factor that led to growth in my faith was watching my classmates and the teachers live it out themselves. While Mr. Good does a great job of teaching the roots and ideals of our faith, it can only be taught through witness. The Kairos Retreat during my junior year was a pivotal moment for me on my faith journey in which I learned to let go of the past, enjoy the beauty around me and thank God for all of it every step of the way.

Your sister told you to get involved and have no regrets. Do you feel like you listened to her advice? Absolutely. My sister is my rock, the person I can always count on for advice, and although I rarely take it, I am so glad I listened to her on this one. From running for Student Council my freshmen year to putting on a One Act Play in Drama 2 class and being a team captain on the Speech and Debate team my senior year there were few stones I left unturned at Holy Family. When Holy Family acquired a girls swim team my junior year I gave it a shot and ended up loving it. High school is entirely a give and take experience and wherever you choose to spend your time and energy you will be rewarded. No matter the activity, just get involved and never look back.

What does it mean to you to be voted Ms. Holy Family? Being named Miss Holy Family is a tremendous honor and I am very grateful for this recognition. It wasn’t until late in my senior year that I began thinking about the title of Miss Holy Family, questioning who might receive the award and later hoping it would be me. For many years I have admired the photos on the wall but it never crossed my mind that I too could be receiving this award. I hope to have set an example of what creative, honest leadership looks like for the underclassman. Knowing that my picture will forever be on the wall of honorees, I hope future students may learn from my successes and find their voice as leaders. I am extremely blessed to have this opportunity.

What words of encouragement do you have for future Holy family students? Be present where your feet are. High school goes by way too fast so soak up every single moment. Spend time with your family, go out with your friends, eat two of Mama Burke’s cookies at lunch, attend the games and dances because before you know it, it will be over. Always be kind because kindness gets you a lot further in life and as people of faith we are called to lead by example. Work smart. You should work hard too but have perspective. Have the time of your life because life gets so much better when you realize the only rules that exist are the ones you set for yourself.

Athletics Recap Boys Basketball

Wrestling

Holy Family lost three of its first four games but as they always tend to do, coach Pete Villecco’s team regrouped and reeled off four consecutive wins, including at then No. 1 Longmont and against another ranked foe in Erie. After two heartbreaking losses the boys once again responded with four wins to close the season including a 67-58 victory at Mead - the eventual Class 4A champs.

Holy Family coach Jason Pedigo’s group had some experience in junior state qualifier Matt McCarthy and a core of freshman – notably Brayden Bach – that were thrown into the mix.

Girls Basketball One year after the pandemic shut the high school season down on the eve of the state title game against Mullen, the Tigers entered the shortened schedule with high expectations. After dropping the season opener, coach Ron Rossi’s team went on a 13-game winning streak that propelled them to the NCAC crown and the No. 1 overall seed in the Class 4A state tournament.

Holy Family would earn the No. 12 seed in the 32-team Class 4A state bracket. After a first round win at home against Grand Junction, the Tigers were eliminated after a 71-45 loss in a rematch with Mead. Jackson Ward earned All-Conference honors from the NCAC as a first team player. Blake Hammond and Eric Quintana were honorable mention selections. GRADUATION 2021 | 18

The Tigers rolled through their first three playoff games to advance to their third straight Final Four. In a rematch of the title game that never was, Mullen proved to be too much in a 75-50 defeat. There was no shortage of post season awards for the Tigers either. Alyssa Wells was named the BoCoPreps Player of the Year and was joined by Tyler Whitlock on the first team. Cecelia Aanerud, Daniella Hren and Dylan Sanders were all honorable mention. Wells also received first team All-State honors from CHSAA and Whitlock was an honorable mention.

The Tigers won six of their 18 duals during the regular season and then were sent to Bennett High School for the regional tournament. Seniors Logan Erickson and Benito Hernandez along with Bach were able to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Erickson and Bach did so after losing their first matches of the day and then fought their way back through the consolation round. Bach was the lone Holy Family wrestler to land on the podium at state, finishing sixth at 106 pounds. Both Erickson and Hernandez went 0-2.

Swimming & Diving One year after a top 15 state finish in their inaugural season, the Tigers made the leap to the top five in 2021. The Tigers swam just five dual meets and went 3-1-1 before heading to their league meet. The Tigers finished fourth at the league meet and Freshman diver Mary Kate Cavanaugh was the lone league champ.

At state, each of the three Tigers relay teams made the finals and the 200 medley team of Abigail Philipsen, Olivia Zuhoski, Cate Chapman and Ivy Wood finished sixth. Philipsen, Zuhoski, Chapman and Summer Norwell finished seventh in the 400 free relay.

It was a tough end to a season that saw the Tigers outscore their opponents 28-14 and suffer all four of their losses by just one goal. The Tigers were led by BoCoPreps and NCAC first teamer Jackson Ward and All NCAC first teamers Garrett Havens and Dylan McIntosh. Kiernan Opp was an honorable mention.

Volleyball

The premier individual event for the Tigers was the 100 backstroke, where they had two of the top four qualifying times – Philipsen and Chapman. Philipsen, who also finished fifth in the 200 individual medley, finished third overall and Chapman tied for fourth. Cavanaugh, who had the best diving score entering the state meet, finished in second.

Cheer Unlike previous years, the cheer season was greatly abbreviated. There were no league meets and the cheer team was limited in their participation at sporting events. They were able to cheer at football games and just two basketball games all season. There was a state cheer tournament in Colorado Springs where Holy Family competed in the 5A/4A Gameday division against some of the largest schools in the state and needed to finish in the

top eight of the preliminaries of 33 schools to make it back to the finals. They scored 78.50 with zero deductions and finished 14th.

Boys Soccer

Holy Family got out of the gates quickly, rolling to a 6-1 start. With a playoff bid firmly in their grasp, the Tigers had things slip away from them in the final games of the regular season. Against Greeley West, the Tigers outshot the Spartans 18-1 on frame, but lost 1-0.

The Tigers and new head coach Jenna Gallas rolled through the regular season with an 8-3 record, with notable wins over 5A Legacy, Erie and Thompson Valley. They earned the No. 17 overall seed into the regional tournament and took care of business in their opening match against Weld Central to set up a winner take all match against Cheyenne Mountain for a state berth. The Tigers dropped their final match of the season in three sets to finish 9-4.

The newly formatted playoffs allowed just the top two from each league and one wild card into the 16 team field – the Tigers saw their hopes fade away in the final game of the season to Silver Creek, losing 2-1 in overtime. In a season that lasted just five weeks, the Tigers managed to show off their talent and were represented on the NCAC All-Conference team by junior outside hitter Anna Hodell and junior libero Madison Forss. Freshman Allie Ward and junior Makenna Bertsch were honorable mention selections. GRADUATION 2021 | 19

30th Annual Holy Family Tiger Gala The 30th Annual Holy Family Tiger Gala was a first for Holy Family. As Broomfield remained in COVID-19 gathering restrictions, our largest annual fundraiser became a hybrid event – broadcast virtually with a limited amount of in-person attendance at the Omni Interlocken. Whether attendees were in-person or virtually - we experienced first-hand the strength of the Holy Family community. We are people of hope. Having the ability to simply gather again – as a community – was a blessing. Funds raised at the Tiger Gala supported new HVAC units that were in imminent need of replacement. The pandemic shed light on our operational priorities and providing a safe learning environment with a top air quality became paramount. With a new air purification system already installed, cycling air and charged particles efficiently though the school building is crucial. The St. Joseph Award recognizes a member of the Holy Family High School community who supports and protects Holy Family – just as St. Joseph sought to protect and defend THE Holy Family. Sister Mary Rose Lieb was honored with the 2nd Annual St. Joseph Award at the Tiger Gala. In her years as Holy Family’s Principal she doubled enrollment, established the endowment fund and led the move to our Broomfield campus. Alumni Weekend Holy Family’s inaugural Alumni Weekend was held June 11-13. Hundreds of alumni, friends and families joined us for a weekend filled with memories, camaraderie and fun. The weekend kicked off with the Hall of Honor induction ceremony. The recently created Hall of Honor recognizes extraordinary individuals from Holy Family’s long and rich history. Inducted for their level of excellence in support of Holy Family were the Sisters of Loretto, Bob & Jean Gryzmala, Sister Aline Dalton, John & Marge Conway, Father Marty Lally, and Patty & Mike Gabriel. The following day, the Holy Family Golf & Tennis Classic was held simultaneously at the Broadlands Golf Course and the new Holy Family tennis complex. Funds raised benefited the Sister Aline Dalton Scholarship Fund which awards half-scholarships to deserving Holy Family students. The weekend concluded with the Classes of 1970 and 1971 celebrating their 50th year reunions and membership into the Golden Diploma. Following Mass, the street leading into the Holy Family campus was officially named Patty Gabriel Way. The day ended with an on campus family BBQ.

Would that we could use mere words to describe Patty Gabriel, we might use the words kind, or funny, or helpful, but as her family knows, those words wouldn't really scratch the surface of who she really was. I knew Patty Gabriel when I was a student and then as a teacher and again when I became part of the alumni association. We each knew Patty in our own way. Classmates, friends, spouse, mother, aunt, grandmother, the list goes on. But truly it is clear that Patty has had an immense impact on those around her. And aren’t we lucky she chose to surround Holy Family High School. In every role she held at the school, she left an impression on me, but I got

to know her best through the alumni association. She was an advocate for students and her focus was on growing alumni relationships, not merely as a system of fundraising but as a way to unify through a shared history. She brought with her traditions from the 44th and Utica campus like the Chili Homecoming Dinner and the May Crowning, traditions that continue and flourish on the Broomfield campus. Patty was dedicated enough to see the traditions and spirit of the Denver school and bring them to the northern suburbs. Perhaps cliched, but Holy Family High School would not be the place it is today without Patty’s dedication and love.

Holy Family Theater's Production of Freaky Friday Holy Family Theater’s spring musical production of Disney’s Freaky Friday was one of the only high school theatrical productions performed in Colorado for an in-person audience this past school year. The talented cast performed seven sold out shows and was Directed by Rebecca Barger. Talise Chandler was the Musical Director and the show was choreographed by Dani Flores ’20.
