LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Holy Child Community, Every December, Merriam-Webster announces its “Word of the Year.” The selection is based on an uptick of online searches for a particular word as well as relevance to the events of the past twelve months. There is no doubt that Holy Child’s word of the year for 2019 is "resiliency." The massive rain and flooding that occurred in July was historic. The DC metro area experienced a month’s worth of rain in a single hour. That day, The Washington Post reported, “the sheets of rain, with nowhere to run off, turned major roads into rivers while streams and creeks shot up 10 feet in less than an hour. The rushing water stranded scores of people in their vehicles, poured into businesses and the Metro system, submerged cars in parking lots, swamped basements, and caused some roads to cave in, forming massive sinkholes.” That one hour turned Holy Child’s campus and plans for the school year upside down. It didn’t take long to determine that our turf field would be unusable for the fall sports season. The bottom level of the main building, especially the new Remington Fitness Center, sustained significant damage, and a powerful lightning strike destroyed an HVAC unit on the roof of Connelly Hall. Summer had barely begun when we had to stop in our tracks and reassess. The American Psychological Association says that many factors contribute to the ability to be resilient. “Studies show that the primary factor in resilience is having caring and supportive relationships within and outside the family.” According to the APA, other factors include “the capacity to make realistic plans and take steps to carry them out, a positive view of yourself, confidence in your strengths and abilities, and skills in communication and problem solving.” All of these traits define our community – our faculty and staff, students, parents, and friends. I cannot even begin to express the pride that I feel for the display of teamwork over the past few months. From the facilities team rushing in immediately to mitigate water damage, to the work of my administration team, taking appropriate steps in regards to clean up, insurance, and communication with the community. Athletic Director Jamie Ready worked tirelessly to set up alternate locations for practices and games, and other schools were generous and helpful in our time of need. Parents rallied with our Development Office in pulling together a plan to get a new field up and running in time for spring sports. When I reflect on the short amount of time between the flood and the announcement of the turf field campaign on Blue/Gold Day, it is stunning to consider how quickly it all came together. Parents and students were flexible and accommodating with all of the logistics involved in off-campus practices and a schedule with all away games. Lastly, our amazing faculty was so understanding and kind, knowing that having all sports off campus would impact their classroom time. Our Holy Child community is a true blessing. We’re made up of problem solvers, positive thinkers, communicators, and doers. Most of all, we have the caring and supportive relationships that make resiliency possible. This spring, we will open our spring sports season on a beautiful, state of the art turf field, and it will be because of each of you. Thank you for your continued support of Holy Child! This past summer, we started offering summer learning programs for incoming 9th graders. Courses were offered in math and English, and we also had strength and conditioning classes for athletes.
Mrs. Moylan, Mrs. Wells, and Mrs. Mayo hosted a College Essay Bootcamp to help seniors prepare for the college application process.
The 6th and 7th grades enjoyed their day-long retreat together reflecting on their beauty as daughters of God.

Our Class of 2020 kicked off the school year by decorating the school in GREEN and welcoming the community on campus for the first day of school! Watch the Instagram story to see all the action.
The 8th grade enjoyed their overnight retreat at Summit Lake Camp in Emmitsburg, MD. This retreat focused on the Bible verse their class selected, "for nothing shall be impossible with God." - Luke 1:17 6

Angela Torrejon ’20 completed the Johns Hopkins University Research and Engineering and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) at the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute. Angela completed 200 hours of research during REAP, culminating in a final presentation to faculty and fellow students.

Montgomery County Councilmember Gabe Albornoz (husband to Campus Minister Catherine Albornoz ’98) spoke to our community about his heritage during Hispanic Heritage Month in September. See our September Instagram story for more.
Fall athletic teams took part in various service activities, including making and delivering lunches for those in need, fundraising for a Dig Pink volleyball game in support of Breast Cancer research, and writing Thanksgiving cards for a women’s shelter.

The Colorectal Cancer Alliance Club hosted a speaker to talk to students about colorectal cancer, research, awareness, and prevention.
The Class of 2023 enjoyed their lock-in retreat on campus while learning more about each other as classmates and as the newest members of the Holy Child community.
Sophomores had a great retreat at Calleva Farm. Students bonded while learning about beauty within themselves and each other.
Holy Child students visit our sister school, Washington School for Girls, every Saturday for math tutoring, which started in September and will go throughout the school year. 9
In October, our Best Buddies Club hosted their annual Halloween Party with Potomac Community Resources.
Varsity Cross Country, Soccer, Tennis, Equestrian, Volleyball, and Field Hockey all celebrated their senior games.
Middle school students learned about team building and leadership during a special ropes course field trip in October.
Students and faculty celebrated National French Week by learning new facts in French history, testing their French cultural knowledge in class, and learning the traditional can-can dance during homeroom.
Our community celebrated World Kindness Day on November 13th by encouraging each other to spread kindness in small or big ways.

The middle school put on two “practically perfect in every way” performances of Mary Poppins JR! Watch the WJLA-TV segment about this year's play.
A number of students and faculty attended the Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference, and ran a workshop called “Speak Up! Your Vote Matters” for other students in attendance.

The juniors enjoyed their Kairos retreat, and strengthened their relationships with God and each other.
Students celebrated Giving Tuesday by participating in a schoolwide scavenger hunt to discover how every student, teacher, and program benefits from the Fund for Holy Child. See firsthand what the Development Office did on this fun day via the QR code. 11
Students Kakie Colclough ’23, Kate DiStefano ’21, Sarah Hortin ’21, Corinne Kulik ’20, Rosie McCarthy ’20, and Liberty Topka ’22 were named All-ISL in Tennis, Field Hockey, Volleyball, and Soccer, respectively.
A group of students attended the Model Organization of American States (MOAS) in November. MOAS provides an opportunity for students to collaborate in working groups and create resolutions to real-world issues in the Americas, which are later debated. The Holy Child Moms’ Club lived out #ActionsnotWords by volunteering at DC Central Kitchen.
Our community began the Advent season with the tradition of Lessons and Carols.
Middle school students enjoyed their Winter Formal with their special guests.
The chorus, vocal ensemble, instrumental ensemble, theatre ensemble, and dance ensemble celebrated "A Connelly Christmas" with our community before Christmas break.
Grandparents and guests joined us for a special afternoon before Christmas break.

In December, a group of students and Holy Child's Christian Service Coordinator Ogechi Akalegbere attended the Diversity Leadership Conference where they participated in student-led workshops and sessions in Seattle, WA.
Middle school Charity in Action students wrote Thanksgiving cards for residents of St. Josephine Bakhita 12 Shelter to receive during Christmas.
Kate DiStefano ’21 received All-Met Honorable Mention for field hockey.

Mayfield Society
Named after Cornelia Connelly’s oldest school location, the Mayfield Society serves as the cornerstone of financial support for Holy Child. Mayfield Society members lead the community with annual gifts to the Fund for Holy Child of $5,000 and above. These leaders help inspire a culture of philanthropy, representing over 50% of unrestricted funding, and their contributions make a significant impact on student experience. Members of the Mayfield Society are recognized personally in various ways throughout the year. Young alumnae within 20 years of graduation may join the Society with gifts of $1,500 and above. Seniors in World Religions have taken advantage of the smaller class size to enjoy a seminar-style experience this semester, engaging in Harkness discussions with primary sources from Hinduism and Buddhism.
Art III students did a self portrait lesson (see back cover), and also began using a new learning technique called visible thinking to observe and slow down thinking processes to dig deeper into artworks.
Students in US History have been focusing on the Civil War era, and delved into the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. The investigation allowed students to develop skills in online research and best practices in finding reliable information. Coverage of Andrew Johnson’s impeachment did allow for conversations on the current articles of impeachment, how the process works, and where we look for information when we want to make sense of complex issues. Integrated Science: The Living Earth classes investigated the salinity tolerance range for brine shrimp by counting the number of eggs hatched over a two-day period.
Students in the 9th grade Finding Christ in Scripture class kicked off the year learning about our founder, Cornelia Connelly, through a technology project where they were given options to work with PowerPoint, Sway, or Google Maps. They documented the life, travels, and legacy of Cornelia Connelly in a way that helped them become familiar with our founder and her vision of education while also honing their technology skills. Students in Spanish I class practice the language together by introducing themselves and others to get to know their fellow classmates.
Students in Geometry class analyze geometric diagrams and categorize what properties can and cannot be assumed.
7th grade science students created their own instant cold packs in a chemical processes unit. Students completed a lab to test and evaluate the best chemicals to use in the prototype, created a blue print, and built their prototypes in class. Students in 6th grade social studies are continuing to learn about ancient civilizations and the development of human societies in social studies. Their most recent civilization was ancient Egypt. Students created and performed interactive dramatizations to understand and explain the social structure of ancient Egypt and its effect on daily life for members of each social class. 14

A handful of faculty and staff attended The Washington International School Summer Institute for Teachers (WISSIT) in July to connect with "Project Zero," a research group at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, that studies innovative teaching practices that support the culture of teaching and learning at Holy Child.

Cara Lewis-Roy, Athletic Trainer, and husband, Malaki, welcomed baby girl Keelyn Grace Roy on November 12, 2019. Alex Barr, Social Studies teacher, and Elsbeth Fager, Director of Visual and Performing Arts, received the Archdiocese of Washington’s Teacher of the Year Awards. Alex received the Novice Teacher Award and Elsbeth received the Veteran Teacher Award.
Sixth-grade teacher Alex Corbutt ’07, married Andrew Peacemaker on Kent Island, MD on November 23rd, 2019.
English teacher Marissa Bulger presented at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) conference which was held in Baltimore, MD, from November 21-24. The presentation was called "Perspectives & Pedagogies for Trauma, Resilience, and Healing," and Marissa chaired a round table on addressing student stress and anxiety with shared and independent reading experiences.
Social Studies teacher Mr. Barr presented at the the National Council for History Education annual conference this year on 20th-Century Native American activism and better incorporating Native American voices into US History courses. 16

- CORNEL IA CONNEL L Y When creating the Holy Child model, Cornelia Connelly focused on educating young girls to become women of faith and action. Not only did she pave the way for young women to have access to an education that "met the wants of the age," but Cornelia also knew that education meant building the confidence and resiliency of every student so that they could face life's many obstacles. The Coakley Center for Innovative Learning provides exactly that for Holy Child students today. Under the leadership of Nicki Hess Iadarola ’05, Director of Academic Support, our students are guided and supported to excel in the classroom and beyond. Nicki believes the program is beneficial because it provides a space where students feel unconditionally supported, and therefore comfortable to voice their
concerns and challenges as well as celebrate their triumphs and accomplishments. This setting provides a safe environment where students learn to identify stressors and obstacles, admit mistakes, and ultimately plan a path forward. Originally a psychology major, Nicki discovered her passion for education and helping students with learning disabilities after working as a learning specialist at a local school. In 2009, Nicki was excited to return to her alma mater, Holy Child, as the academic support program began. Since then, Nicki has been instrumental in ensuring the program remains an important and necessary resource on campus. One major benefit to the program is that it is an accessible tool for all members 18
of our community. Each learning specialist on campus is equipped to provide students with the tools to be resilient and confident in the classroom, while also learning to apply those skills in everyday life. The learning specialists meet with parents, teachers, and students to ensure students are receiving the support they need in order to be successful; it is a collaborative effort in all aspects. As Cornelia stressed, resiliency is not easy, but is an essential tool to help students get through any situation. Nicki believes that students must understand that there are many pathways to success.

At Holy Child, teachers instill resilience in their students by empowering them to navigate their own learning styles. Holy Child students are active participants in their learning. Students learn about their strengths and individual challenges, and are provided a seat at the table among parents, educators, and administrators. With this approach, students are invested and responsible for taking ownership of their learning. Our learning specialists have
seen students articulately and professionally lead meetings because they have been taught to self-reflect and have become self-aware. Students become adept at overcoming challenges they encounter because they feel they are in control of their learning, and thus are living examples of the merit of Cornelia's educational model.

A LABOR OF LOVE If you are on Holy Child's campus early before school or well after the last bell rings, at a Best Buddies party on a Saturday evening, at Open House, graduation, or in the gym before and after an all-school Mass, the person you are sure to see is Javier Guzman. Mr. Guzman is always present, always working, always humble, and ready to offer a helping hand and a kind smile. He is currently the member of Holy Child’s faculty and staff with the longest number of years served, having worked for nearly 30 years in his role as Facilities Supervisor. The Holy Child charism of simplicity, humility, charity, and joy are present in him and in the generous way he serves this community. Mr. Guzman and his team work to keep the campus running smoothly – to make sure that the sidewalks and parking lots are shoveled after snow, that the cafeteria is clean again after lunch, that lightbulbs are replaced, that chairs are put up before Mass and taken down again, that we don’t run out of essential supplies, and that everything looks fresh all the time. Even during breaks, he is here working. The best time to paint and attend to repairs is easier when the building is empty. In nearly 30 years, he’s seen his share of change on campus, ranging from construction and new buildings to disasters like floods and a fire. In these periods of change,
Mr. Guzman works extra hard to ensure that the school will operate smoothly, all with a sense of calm, responsibility, and purpose. When I asked Mr. Guzman if he had the time to sit down and speak with me about his Holy Child experience and his work here over so many years, he was so willing, as always, to say “yes!” His usual reply to me when I’m asking him about a Mass setup, to move a piano in the chapel, to help carry loads of toys during our Christmas toy drive, or to fix something that isn’t working is "yes," and always when I thank him, he replies not with a “you’re welcome” but a “it’s my pleasure” or “I’m here to serve.” He seems to never run low on patience with taking care of all of us and Holy Child. “It’s my home,” he says. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Guzman to ask him some questions about his Holy Child experiences. I share here some segments of our conversation:

DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE SEASONS IN THE HOLY CHILD YEAR? I like the Christmas season. We see the enthusiasm as doors and lockers are decorated for Advent Angels, everyone puts on a Christmas hat, there is great energy. It’s an exciting time of year and one in which I’m especially happy to work at a Catholic school. I also like the time when we approach graduation. Everyone is excited and emotional about graduation coming, we wait for it each year. So many families are here to celebrate the graduates and we take care of the school and grounds to look really great. WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN HOLY CHILD OVER THE YEARS? When I first started, the Holy Child sisters lived here in the ranch house on campus and Sr. Margaret was the Head of School. Their presence was something that I really enjoyed and gave the school a special holy feeling. You still feel the religious importance of Holy Child, but in a different way. We have our Masses frequently, our events like toy drives, community service, and many events through the year to keep the spirit. It is something that I like very much as I’m Catholic and believe in the importance of this. In our buildings, I see many changes over time. There has been a transformation of our buildings – from the ranch house where the sisters lived to the new Connelly Hall building. The chapel has moved from place to place to our beautiful chapel today, our field has been renovated, the gym, the cafeteria, even the classrooms and furniture. I see it as really beautiful now as it’s modernized. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAINTAIN YOUR JOYFUL SPIRIT OF SERVICE IN YOUR HARD WORK EVERY DAY FOR ALL THESE YEARS? In this job, no one obliges me to be here at 7 at night or on Sunday. But the school gives me so much – the satisfaction of working. I feel good,

useful, so I dedicate my time to this community. If they say that the firefighters have to come, I rush to be here. Whatever is needed I put in the effort. This is a place full of great people. My team and I are treated with great respect. We are treated so well. We are very content with our work and the community. We try to serve the best that we are able. We serve here with pleasure.

A REFLECTION ON THE RESILIENCY OF THE FIELD AND WHAT IT MEANS TO THE COMMUNITY. I remember the first time I saw the field at Holy Child. I was in 4th grade, arriving late to my first game of a lacrosse tournament. As my mom pulled into the parking lot of the field, I scrambled to gather my gear in the back seat, oblivious to the beautiful landscape around me that my mom pointed out before she came to a stop. She opened the trunk, and I dashed out of the car and towards the field. Before I stepped foot onto the field, however, I stopped in awe. I was taken back by the beautiful green color of the turf that sat before me. An abundance of blue and gold appeared in the center of the field in a tiger paw print. It was an incredible sight I couldn’t get over. The first whistle had blown. I was late to the game.
Ever since I experienced that feeling of walking onto the field for the first time, I knew that Holy Child would someday be my home. Nine years later, the feeling remains just as strong every time I step onto the field – a feeling I’ve been lucky enough to experience countless times over the last four years as a Holy Child Tiger. Throughout the seven seasons of lacrosse and field hockey, and the three Blue/ Gold games, every time I step on to the turf, that feeling is amplified, as a true member of the Holy Child community, a true Tiger. Not only do I get the same excitement when looking at the beauty of the field, but I’ve also come to realize its power to unify the community. The Holy Child field is not just for athletes. It’s where our friends, parents, brothers 24
and sisters, teachers, and coaches are brought together to celebrate the spirit of competition. On the field, we watch students become outstanding athletes as they fight to outrun an opponent to the ball. On the sidelines, classmates cheer at the top of their lungs for their best friends. In the stands, teachers and families proudly watch as students play the sport they love. The field gives a sense of belonging to everyone in the Holy Child community, because it’s where hard work and dedication, and love and passion for the school are poured out. On July 8th, my mom told me that the field had been flooded by storms, and that it was ruined and would not be able to be used for a while. The next time I was at school, I stood in front of the field, and struggled to feel those feelings I had experienced 25
for so long. The vibrant blues and yellows of the tiger print faded under puddles of murky water. The beautiful green turf was ripped and folding. All I could think about were the memories that the field created for so many of us, and how I might never get to relive them ever again. The field is a major part of who we are as Tigers, and I worried that our identity would fade. However, the same way that the Holy Child community united on the field, everyone came together and raised enough money to build a brand new turf field for the spring sports season. Because of the generosity of the donors, we can once again experience everything we felt that very first time we laid eyes on the field. The installation of a new turf comes the remembrance of memories made on our old field and
the opportunity to become part of a new chapter in the Holy Child community with the Hanley Field. Someday, I hope another little 4th grade girl will see the new field and be just as amazed as I was nine years ago.

Our campus incurred significant damage as a result of the torrential rain storm on Monday, July 8th - specifically the lower level of the main building (where our renovations were completed just last summer) and the turf field, which was rendered unusable. Once we were able to assess the damage, the Holy Child Development Office quickly pulled together a campaign to raise funds to ensure that our students would be able to play on a field during the 2019 – 2020 school year. Over an eight week period, the campaign raised $472,000. On November 20, 2019, we broke ground on a new turf field. Over a six week period, our team was able to: Cut up and remove the old turf field Remove stadium padding Paint the scoreboard area Trim trees surrounding the turf field Install a 20’ tall fence to prevent balls from entering the conservation area Install new stadium padding

ABOUT HOLY CHILD’S NEW TURF FIELD Holy Child is proud to be one of the only local high schools in the DC metro area to have a BrockFILL turf – an engineered wood particle infill specifically designed for artificial surfaces. Made in the USA, BrockFILL is constructed from a species of southern pine that is grown, harvested, and replanted in continuous cycles, making it ideal for a sustainable, renewable organic infill product. BrockFILL will allow our turf field to be approximately 20 degrees cooler than our old artificial turf. Additionally, BrockFILL’s shock padding reduces risk of injuries.

Holy Child received a GMAX test report (the current standard measurement for the "safety" of a playing surface) confirming the impact measurements of our turf field averaged 120, which is a perfect score and better than the NFL and Synthetic Turf Council safety limit of 165. After the damange, Holy Child's old field was tested and had an average of 174. We have thus improved the safety for Holy Child students with the new field.

Dear Holy Child Alumnae Community, Happy New Year! It’s the start to a new decade, bringing with it excitement for change and growth at Holy Child. If you’ve been following along, you may have noticed the school is quite different from what you remember. However, what has not changed is Holy Child’s unique sense of community. Every time I visit the school, I still get that feeling of “coming home.” You can tell the girls are so happy to be attending such a beautiful school. There is so much support and love, and we want them to carry that with them well after Holy Child. Because you never really leave Holy Child, right? Isn’t that the whole point? Our Alumnae Council is working so hard to provide all our alums with that same sense of community they felt while at school. With that in mind, I hope you enjoy reading through some of the items our Alumnae Council has been working on. We launched our app! So many of our alumnae asked how they can network with one another by geographic area, career field, or how they could reconnect with their classmates. The app will do just that! LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR Dear Holy Child, As I have recently prepared for the next six months of Board of Trustees' activities, which will bring to an end of my time as a trustee, I have also reflected upon my eight years as a member of the Board. During that time, Holy Child has undergone tremendous growth and presented new and exciting opportunities for the young women enrolled in the school as well as the teachers and the administrative staff. As with all endeavors, there have been great successes to which we can point, but also some difficult times that we collectively came through with great resolution. The resiliency that has been at the forefront of dealing with the successes and the difficulties I attribute to the unique character of the entire Holy Child community; the students, the faculty, teachers, parents, alumnae, and the trustees. The foundation for this unique character we find at Holy Child is certainly the teachings of Cornelia Connelly and her steadfast desire for a holistic and unique approach to the education of each young person as a distinctive individual. An appreciation of this approach by the entire Holy Child community, I believe, is the basis for the wonderful character and resiliency we have witnessed during the 50 plus years of the school here in Potomac. Of course, there is a corresponding need to match this great character and resilience of the Holy Child community, and that is through financial commitments which enable the school to grow and expand into the new opportunities we have all come to rely upon. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to all who made financial commitments to Holy Child during the 2018-19 school year. A report of the incredible generosity from all corners of the Holy Child community follows for your review. We are pleased to share that in the 2018-2019 fiscal year (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019), our community raised $1.4 million dollars in support of Holy Child. Unrestricted gifts provide the highest level of financial flexibility for our school, enabling us to deliver the full Holy Child experience. In the last year, over $1.1 million was raised in unrestricted giving, including $699K in gifts to the Fund for Holy Child. Our Board of Trustees as well as the faculty and staff led by example with 100% participation, along with 75% of our parents and 16% of our alumnae.
