Jordon: My pro tip this month: If you have small children, I would consider staining your lower cabinets over painting.

hold up better to the abuse of living tornadoes. Stain grade wood is typically a harder density wood and is more forgiving to dents and scratches. Paint can chip off because it is on top of the wood, while stain soaks into the wood. As the wood dents, the stain dents with it, making it less noticeable.

DIY DETOX BATH SALTS BY DOWN TO EARTH
Down to Earth is a local "apothecary for the modern hippie", specializing in "Baths * Brews * Baubles". One of their most popular items are their detox bath bombs! They are a staple in my house year round. DTE was kind enough to provide a DIY recipe you can make at home with easy to find ingredients. *Pictured are two varieties of bath bombs they offer.
Ingredients 1 cup epsom salt 1/3 cup baking soda 2 tbsp activated charcoal or bentonite clay 8 drops lemon essential oil 6 drops grapefruit essential oil 8 drops cypress essential oil
Directions 1. Mix salt and baking soda in bowl, break up any clumps. 2. Add essential oils, mix. 3. Add activated charcoal or clay and mix gently and thoroughly. 4. Add 1/2 cup of mix into bath and ENJOY! Store in a glass jar.

DESIGNER SPACE WITH TAYLOR DAVIS (SURFACES DESIGN STUDIO) Taylor is a busy lady, running her super fun design studio, Surfaces, in Beaumont and running after her two adorable boys! Luckily, we were able to track her down and get her take on 2023 design. HCS: So, you just got back from a market in Dallas. What are some styles you saw and like? Taylor: There was so much! We saw some VERY realistic wood look porcelains with great texture, variation, and length. There were also new plaster style tiles with a matte finish. I am particularly excited about some amazing marbles coming in 12"x 24" (and larger) plus the mosaics to match! There are new wood flooring planks, and 3 colors coming in herringbone options, as well.
I AM EXPECTING A TRANSITION BACK TO
Engineered wood is real wood, just put together differently than a solid wood plank. Solid wood for our area is not ideal, unfortunately. The engineered wood (real wood) has come so far. The manufacturers have done an outstanding job providing an enormous color range and the durability of these products are next level. We’ve been installing wood in kitchens and bathrooms, which tends to scare a lot of people. Any natural material will require a different type of care, however, the look and feel of real wood is definitely worth it – I think more people will lean into that this year.
Taylor: Let's talk about showers, though! I am calling a MAJOR TRANSITION. Subway tile has been all the rage, but I see a full slab shower tile taking over for 2023. Whether it be natural stone slabs or porcelain slabs, it is something we’ll be doing a lot of, no doubt. It’s such a gorgeous finish and I love the lack of grout! Beauty + durability will always be a win for me!
Taylor: I love having a designated space for drama! Spaces that are perfect for this are powder bathrooms, offices, wet bars & pantries. Moody and darker colors will continue through this year in these spaces and extend throughout the larger living areas as well. I think we will be seeing a lot of artistic use of stone, perfectly imperfect products, and significantly more focus on the details.
NATURAL MATERIALS. HCS: We can't wait to see you incorporate these elements into your designs! What are some forward trends you see for 2023?
HCS: What exciting things do you have on the horizon? Taylor: Besides our current projects, we will also be in Vegas for KBIS (Kitchen and Bath Industry Show) and TISE (The International Surface Event) at the end of the month, and will have much more then! I will share that when we get back!
Taylor: For our area, I'm expecting a transition back to natural materials. I forsee less manmade quartz countertops and a lot more natural stones – marbles, quartzites, granites + leathered and honed finishes. I personally prefer to use a combination of finishes in the same space! As far as flooring goes, the wood look tile and LVP will still be around but I definitely see more real wood flooring.
